Why Java cannot read a single char ?

Hi all,
Have you ever tried to read a single char in java
and output to the screen? I have tried nearly all
IO streams but it seems that System.in doesn't
returns until a CR/LF is issued. Why is it implemented this way?
Are there any alternatives (JNI ?) ?
Thanks a lot
Francesco

Did you already try the next issue?
public class test{
     public static void main(String[] args)
     throws Exception{
          System.out.print("Enter a character: ");
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
char ch = (char)br.read();
System.out.println("You've entered: " + ch);
Hope this help!

  • GP - WD Java: Cannot read callable object description from component

    Hi,
    i use Guided Procedures and therefore i will generate a WebDynproJ Callable Object inside the GP.
    When i try to intergate it into Design-Time i get follwoing error after i picked the WebDynpro Component:
    Cannot read callable object description from component: type com.sap.caf.gp.quotcreate.model.bapi_quotation_createfromdata2.types.Vbeln_Va could not be loaded: com.sap.dictionary.runtime.DdException: TypeBroker failed to access SLD: Error while obtaining JCO connection.
    Well because i could import the Model into the WD Component in NWDS with the given JCo i have no clue why this error is now popping up.
    Does someone have some experience with this phenomenon?!
    I also wanted to check the JCo's in Content Admin but even though i am an Admin (i am sure of this) i have no rights to enter this part. Also the SLD is properly configured!

  • Why Lightroom cannot read Nikon Scanner's NEF?

    I am trying to scan my old negatives with a nikon coolscan IV. There are optiions for saving the files in NEF raw file format or TIFF format. TIFF format works fine, but Nikon's NEF file format is not openable with Lightroom or Photoshop CS3 or CS2. I also have a Nikon D50 and NEF from the camera are imported and readable by Lightroom and Photoshop. Can anyone explain to me why this is the case, since both are NEF files. Is it the setting of the scan or something else? Is there a fixed for this?
    Michael

    Nikon's "scanner NEF" files contain EXACTLY the same image data is their TIFF files, just packaged differently in a way that is incompatible with normal TIFF readers such as Lightroom.
    We will probably add support for these files in some future version, however this will only be so users don't have to convert these files to normal TIFF files using Nikon software. This future support would have absolutely ZERO quality advantage over just using TIFF in the first place.
    In the meantime, just use TIFF with Nikon scanner software. Using "scanner NEF" is a waste of time, and is completely pointless.

  • Why Java not allowed Widening and auto-boxing in single expression?

    Hi All,
    I have a very small question in my mind, that I would like to put on this discussion board.
    Why Java not allowed Widening and auto-boxing in single expression?
    Like:
    short s = 10;
    Long l = s;I want to know if java allowed above expression then what problem may occur?
    I know it is not a intelligent question, However still I ask for discussion.
    Thanks advance for all viewer of this question.

    I didn't like it at first, but it turns out my initial complaints were pretty much unfounded. I find it quite useful. It takes a fair amount of clutter out of code. The only real problem with it is that if you're not careful, you can end up doing a lot of unnecessary bouncing back and forth between primitives and wrappers without knowing it, which could hurt performance.In my opinion the biggest problem is getting NPEs at code lines, that look completely harmless. That used to bother me too, but then, if I'm writing
    int i = getAnInteger();it's just a replacement for
    int i = getAnInteger().intValue();which would also have caused NPE.
    That is, if I'm using autoboxing properly, it's just shorthand for what I'd have been doing otherwise anyway. True, it's easy to not think about it, to forget to consider whether NPE is a possibility and what the proper approach is, but mostly, if I want int, I know it can't be null (or if it is, I should get NPE).
    And when it comes time to debug the NPE, it's no great mystery, once you know the rules.
    If you don't think of autoboxing at the right position, then you can spend hours after hours tracking down a trivial bug ... or so I've heard ;-)Even if you're not thinking about it when you write the code, when you see an "impossible" NPE during debugging, it should be an instant giveaway.

  • Error: cannot read: C:\Documents; and Settings\JR\Desktop\logrand.java

    Thats the problem.
    Bug started happening all the sudden.
    Double click a java file on the desktop that just two second before was built fine. Go to build it and it says that.
    "error: cannot read: C:\Documents; and Settings\JR\Desktop\logrand.java"
    Now note this is a file in the IDE.
    copy/paste/change file name/brand new file/turn off the computer. Everything on the desktop path says that same error message. Then i noted the semicolon in the middle of the path after documents. The compilier has misspelled the path name. Its open the file in the IDE but somehow the build step gets a path with a semicolon in the middle.
    What do i do?

    dont bother.
    it felt like some sort of corruption so i just reinstalled netbeans and that did the trick.
    I was still using 3.5 any way =)

  • Error: cannot read HelloworldApp.java

    Hello
    When I compile the HelloWorldApp.java program. I have this problem:
    I get: error: cannot read HelloworldApp.java. What can I do?
    In addition, How do I use the options? For example:
    javac -g HelloworldApp.java
    I get an error saying that I did not use well the flag g. Is the command bad written?.

    You post has different capitalization of the program name:
    ". . .compile the HelloWorldApp.java program. I have this problem:
    I get: error: cannot read HelloworldApp.java.
    Java is case-sensitive, make sure to capitalize correctly.
    Open a cmd/command window in the directory that contains your .java file and do a "dir helloworldapp.java" command to verify the file exists with the correct name.
    Read the documentation for the javac command to learn how to use the command options.

  • Error: cannot read: OurFirstProgram.java

    Went through all help to no avail. New to Java. Using Windows 2000. Attempting to compile OurFirstProgram.java using MSDOS prompt. Receiving error: cannot read: OurFirstProgram. File saved as .java in C:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin\. javac also in same dir.
    From MSDOS tried many variations: c:\>j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin\javac -source 1.4 OurFirstProgram.java
    Please advise, thanks.

    Resolved using simple calculation class:
    created seperate directory from j2sdk1.4.1_01 labeled "Fruit" in which Fruit.java file exists.
    In MS-DOS from command line, used:
    c:\>cd Fruit
    C:\Fruit> javac Fruit.java
    By identifying the path of where the actual .java file resided, I was able to read and complie the file creating the .class file in the same dir.

  • When LR cannot read a photo, LR should state why

    The Warning dialog has a generic message but no explanation of why LR was unable to read the photo: "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo. You will not be able to make adjustments to the photo." This is not helpful, LR needs to state why.
    E.g. last time, I noticed they were two photos in Lab Color Mode, so I figured out LR cannot read files in Lab Color Mode; the Warning message should state it.

    This is pervasive in "modern" software: software detects a problem (and almost always knows what problem it has encountered), stops the process and tells you it stopped. But programmers are lazy beasts and it seems that it has become much too much effort for them to generate an error message with some meaning and possible circumventions, etc. There is software that will facilitate this process but it is just too demeaning ... especially since programmers are supposed to write good code and reporting errors reflects poorly, eh? Having been a mainframe assembler programmer for fifteen years I know it used to be unacceptable to detect an error and not report what the error was. But since the rise of Microsoft it appears that the convenience of the programmers has way surpassed the needs of the customers and Adobe is leaning this way. They use this same "technique" when they can't export an image ... "We didn't export it ... you try to guess why not!"

  • Compiling message "cannot read" (new to java)

    Sorry about yet another question on compiling. I'm new to java. I've read alot of the threads on this, but my HelloJava.java won't compile.
    I'm working on w2k. I've set my path to
    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;c:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin
    using the environment variables in the system properties box.
    This seems to work fine.
    but I keep getting the "cannot read" when compiling.
    I've created a classpath variable in the environment variables
    CLASSPATH = .;C:\src
    and my java file is definately .java not .java.txt and it's in the src folder on my c drive.
    Do I need to set classpath? Also I've put my HelloJava.java file in the same folder as my javac and it still won't compile. What am I doing wrong?
    By the way, the HelloJava file came from the book "Learning Java".
    thanks in advance.

    OK -
    If you place your .java files in C:\src, to compile you must either
    1. Go to (change the current directory to, using cd command) c:\src and then enter "javac ...."
    or
    2 From any directory enter "javac C:\src\...."
    Classpath is used by javac and java, but not in this way.
    Read here for the full story:
    The Path is a set of pointers that Windows uses to locate programs that you execute, like javac.exe and java.exe. This setting is explained here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/install-windows.html
    Scroll down to: 5. Update the PATH variable
    The CLASSPATH is another set of pointers that is used by Java to find the files that you create and want compiled and/or run. This setting is explained here:
    Setting the Classpath:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/tooldocs/windows/classpath.html
    [NOTE: always start your classpath with ".;" which means the current directory. See my classpath, below]

    Hi,
    First of all please copy your jdk1.5 source file in the root directory of C: drive. If it is in C:\MyFiles\YourFiles\jdk1.5 then change it to C:\jdk1.5. It is more scientific ( or I think so..) to have jdk in your root file.
    If you are using WindowsXP, and having these problems, then please take the following steps:
    1. Go to Control Panel
    2. Click System
    3. Now click Advanced tab.
    4. On the bottom left, there is a button called Environment Variables. Please click it.
    5. Now there are two text fields. Select -- "Path" from the System Variables text field.
    6. Now select edit. On the right side where the windows path ends, put a comma and type C:/jdk1.5/bin ( Please type full extension of your jdk exactly as it is saved in C: drive.
    It may look like this:
    ....Root%\System32\Wbem;C:\jdk1.5.0_06\bin
    7. Now Click all OKs
    8. Now open cmd prompt and compile ur program from its directory.
    9. Now Thank God and be happy!!!!
