Why use a database?

I'm curious as to why one would use a database like mysql (or
any other DB) over flash extracting information from a text file.
(exceptions: password protection and search fields)
Thank you.

I just created an events application that uses a Flash
calendar and
integrates with ASP to produce XML on the fly to be used by
Flash. I did it
this way so the client could hold the vast number of city
events in a
database and I could easily create insert, update and delete
pages to
provide a simple tool for them to input the events
themselves.

  • Why and how we use Logical Database?

    Can anybody explain with example why and how we use logical database?
    Regards,
    Rajan

    Hello,
    SAP comes loaded with all the extras. Among the extras that are most helpful to IT managers are all the access routines needed to pull any business object that managers can think of out of SAP databases. However, SAP has not thought of everything where your particular applications are concerned. SAP organizes its standard database tables to service business units based on conventional business applications. Itu2019s likely your business requires something new, perhaps even something exotic. In that case, you will need to create a new database, using information from different places. Basically, you need a logical database. You need to create a virtual business data object repository consisting of a new kind of record or table that suits your purposes. In addition, the repository should be composed of information that is actually stored in a number of different locations, none of them necessarily logically associated with one another. Letu2019s take a closer look at creating logical databases.
    A case for a logical database
    Suppose my company manufactures widgets of the most obscure variety, and they are components of other widgets. I sell my widgets as raw material for the more sophisticated widgets built by others, but in some cases I actually partner with other manufacturers in creating yet another class of widget. Now, in my world, I consequently have customers who are also partners. I sell to them and I partner with them in manufacturing and distribution. Also, I need an application that uses both of these dual-use relationships.
    Essentially, I have a customer database and a partner database. Neither contains records that are structured to contain the identifying particulars of the other. Thus, I need a hybrid database that gives me tables detailing these hybrid relationships. What can I do? I can go the long way around and write a new database, pulling information from both and creating new objects with a customized program that I write by hand. However, this process is cumbersome and contains maintenance issues. On the other hand, I can use SAPu2019s logical database facility, create my logical database in a couple of minutes, and have no maintenance issues at all.
    Logical database structures
    There are three defining entities in an SAP logical database. You must be clear on all three in order to create and use one.
    u2022     Table structure: Your logical database includes data from specified tables in SAP. There is a hierarchy among these tables defined by their foreign keys (all known to SAP), and you are going to define a customized relationship between select tables. This structure is unique and must be defined and saved.
    u2022     Data selection: You may not want or need every item in the referenced tables that contributes to your customized database. There is a selection screen that permits you to pick and choose.
    u2022     Database access programming: Once youu2019ve defined your logical database, SAP will generate the access subroutines needed to pull the data in the way you want it pulled.
    Creating your own logical database
    ABAP/4 (Advanced Business Application Programming language, version 4) is the language created by SAP for implementation and customization of its R/3 system. ABAP/4 comes loaded with many predefined logical databases that can construct and table just about any conventional business objects you might need in any canned SAP application. However, you can also create your own logical databases to construct any custom objects you care to define, as your application requires in ABAP/4. Hereu2019s a step-by-step guide:
    1.     Call up transaction SLDB (or transaction SE36). The path you want is Tools | ABAP Workbench | Development | Programming Environment | Logical Databases. This screen is called Logical Database Builder.
    2.     Enter an appropriate name in the logical database name field. You have three options on this screen: Create, Display, and Change. Choose Create.
    3.     Youu2019ll be prompted for a short text description of your new logical database. Enter one. Youu2019ll then be prompted to specify a development class.
    4.     Now comes the fun part! You must specify a root node, or a parent table, as the basis of your logical database structure. You can now place subsequent tables under the root table as needed to assemble the data object you want. You can access this tree from this point forward, to add additional tables, by selecting that root node and following the path Edit | Node | Create. Once youu2019ve saved the structure you define in this step, the system will generate the programming necessary to access your logical database. The best part is you donu2019t have to write a single line of code.

  • When / why use XML to store data instead of database table ?

    Hi All,
    I still not use XML much in applications and don't know much about its utilization.
    I read here and there about storing data as XML instead of into database tables.
    - could any body please tell me when / why use XML to store data instead of database table ?
    e.g : store inventory per warehouse in XML format. ?
    - What is the other cases or reasons of extracting database records into XML or vice versa ?
    - is there any good pdf on this ?
    Thank you for your help,
    xtanto

    It depends entirely what you want to accomplish with the 'XML in the database'. There are basically 3 independent methods: As CLOB, as XMLType views or as native XMLType 'columns'
    Each method has advantages and disadvantages, especially in the performance vs purpose tradeoff.
    The Oracled Press book "Oracle Database 10g XML & SQL Design, Build, & Manage XML Applications in Java, C, C++, & PL/SQL" is highly recommended for anyone interested in Oracle and XML. http://books.mcgraw-hill.com/getbook.php?isbn=0072229527&template=oraclepress

  • Why u  use logical databases

    how u used logical database?how is data transferrd to program?corresponding statement in LDB?

    Hi,
    Logical databases are programs that does useful tasks like data fetch, Authorization check on behalf of thep program to which you attach them.
    Some of the Tasks of LDB's.
    <b>Reading the same data for several programs.</b>
    The individual programs do not then need to know the exact structure of the relevant database tables (and especially not their foreign key relationships). Instead, they can rely on the logical database to read the database entries in the right order during the GET event.
    <b>Defining the same user interface for several programs.</b>
    Logical databases have a built-in selection screen. Therefore, all of the programs that use the logical database have the same user interface.
    <b>Central authorization checks</b>
    Authorization checks for central and sensitive data can be programmed centrally in the database to prevent them from being bypassed by simple application programs.
    <b>Improving Performance</b>
    If you want to improve response times, logical databases permit you to take a number of measures to achieve this (for example, using joins instead of nested SELECT statements). These become immediately effective in all of the application programs concerned and save you from having to modify their source code.
    The data fetch happend with the PUT_XXXX subrotuines in the Logical database programs.
    Example:
    DATABASE PROGRAM OF THE LOGICAL DATABASE TEST_LDB
    PROGRAM sapdbtest_ldb DEFINING DATABASE test_ldb.
    TABLES: lfa1,

  • How to host one application using different database connection on OAS?

    Hi,
    Jdeveloper - 10.1.3.4
    Application - ADF/BC
    Oracle Application Server - 10.1.3
    Above our the specifications for our application,
    We have two database schemas different for development and production therfore we have different databse connections for the two,
    we have one application which is in production and enhacements on the same application are done by the development team.
    Since we have two different schemas for developement and prduction we use different database connections for the application on development and production.
    The problem is our Model and View Controller project are same, only the database connection file changes that's why we are able to host only on application at a time on our OAS. This is probably because the URL generated by OAS for developemnt and prodyction application is same.
    Is there a way we can host two instances of the same application with two different database connections on the a single OAS.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Raksha

    Use different deployment profiles each with a different context root for your application?

  • When using the Database Connectivity Toolset, reads and writes with long binary fields are incompatible.

    I am trying to write LabVIEW Variants to long binary fields in a .mdb file using the Database Connectivity Toolset. I get errors when trying to convert the field back to a variant after reading it back from the database.
    I next tried flattening the variant before writing it and ultimately wound up doing the following experiments:
    1) If I use DB Tools Insert Data to write an ordinary string and read it back using a DB Tools Select Data, the string is converted from ASCII to Unicode.
    2) If I use DB Tools Create Parameterized Query to do an INSERT INTO or an UPDATE operation, specifying that the data is BINARY, then read it back using a DB Tools Select Data,
    the length of the string is prepended to the string itself as a big-endian four-byte integer.
    I can't think of any way to do a parameterized read, although the mechanism exists to return data via parameters.
    Presuming that this same problem affects Variants when they are written to the database and read back, I could see why I get an error. At least with flattened strings I have the option of discarding the length bytes from the beginning of the string.
    Am I missing something here?

    David,
    You've missed the point. When a data item is flattened to a string, the first four bytes of the string are expected to be the total length of the string in big-endian binary format. What is happening here is that preceding this four-byte length code is another copy of the same four bytes. If an ordinary string, "abcdefg" is used in place of the flattened data item, it will come back as <00><00><00><07>abcdefg. Here I've used to represent a byte in hexadecimal notation. This problem has nothing to do with flattening and unflattening data items. It has only to do with the data channel consisting of writing to and reading from the database.
    I am attaching three files that you can use to demonstrate the problem. The VI file c
    ontains an explanation of the problem and instructions for installing and operating the demonstration.

  • Why Using Top Link is best in DB Adapter?

    Hi All,
    Can any one suggest , Why Using Top Link (Build-in Insert, Select etc. operation) is best in DB Adapter over using custom query?
    Thanks

    Hi Vikky,
    for insert/select it depends on what kind of user you are. TopLink lets you browse and click on a tables and have everything generated for you. If you are more a DBA or show me the SQL type then you can just type SQL directly.
    Some advantages of TopLink would be:
    -The range of SQL generated by TopLink is limited, but if you hard code complex SQL into your service you need to maintain it.
    -TopLink can generate at runtime the correct SQL for a given database, making switching from say DB2 to Oracle easy.
    -The merge operation will compare the input XML to the columns on the database and update only what has changed. It can also do a sparse merge. If only 4 columns in the XML were set, only those 4 columns in the database will be updated.
    -For inbound polling the strategy used (LogicalDelete, Sequencing Table, etc) is a configuration property and then at runtime multiple SQL statements are generated. The SQL also takes advantage of advanced syntax like the Oracle-only FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, writing it all yourself may be tedious and error prone.
    -The main benefit of TopLink is when you go beyond thinking about a single table. If you import multiple related tables at once, TopLink will generate the SQL to select from and maintain multiple tables, establish a commit order, and generate a hierarchical XSD. With custom SQL the matching XSD is always flat. I.e. if you just need to insert an emp you could get away with custom SQL. If you need to insert a dept and emps, I would use TopLink.
    -This is also when the intermediary abstraction of an object/table makes more sense, as you only need to import a complex relational schema once, then generate inserts, selects, etc.
    So I hope that helps. They are each equally viable and can do something that the other can't. Where you see an overlap I would go with personal preference.
    Thanks
    Steve

  • Form-based authentication in JBoss using a database and JAAS

    I am trying to set up simple authentication using a database. I am initially trying to secure all web resources, since my application accesses the EJBs via servlets (and is working fine without security). Later I will tighten things down so that the EJB's business methods will also have security in place.
    It seems that everything is in place but I am unable to authenticate a user when I use a valid login/password combination (I am being redirected to the login error page). No exceptions appear in the JBoss console, and the database tables are populated with proper values. I'm clueless as to why this isn't working -- hopefully someone reading this can give me a clue as to what is going wrong.
    Here is what I have done so far:
    1) I have two tables in my database, one for the username and password, and another for roles. The database tables look like this:
    table name: principals
    column: principal_id VARCHAR(64) primary key
    column: password VARCHAR(64)
    table name: roles
    column: principal_id VARCHAR(64)
    column: user_role VARCHAR(64)
    column: role_group VARCHAR(64)
    2) I have added an entry in $JBOSS/server/default/conf/login-config.xml to declare an application policy which uses a DatabaseServerLoginModule. In this entry I have specified the SQl to be used by the module for selecting the password and role, following the example in the JBoss Getting Started Guide (p. 57):
        <!-- added for HIM Server security -->
        <application-policy name="HIM-client-login">
            <authentication>
                <login-module code="org.jboss.security.auth.spi.DatabaseServerLoginModule"
                              flag="required">
                    <module-option name="dsJndiName">java:/OracleDS</module-option>
                    <module-option name="principalsQuery">select password from principals where principal_id=?</module-option>
                    <module-option name="principalsQuery">select user_role, role_group from roles where principal_id=?</module-option>
                </login-module>
            </authentication>
        </application-policy>
         ...3) I have added a security domain entry in the jboss-web.xml file:
        <!-- All secure web resources will use this security domain -->
        <security-domain>java:/jaas/HIM-client-login</security-domain>
        ... 4) I have declared a security constraint in the web.xml file:
        <!-- security configuration -->
        <security-constraint>
            <display-name>Server Configuration Security Constraint</display-name>
            <!-- the collection of resources to which the sucurity constraint applies -->
            <web-resource-collection>
                <web-resource-name>Secure Resources</web-resource-name>
                <description>Security constraint for all resources</description>
                <!-- the pattern that this constraint applies to -->
                <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
                <!-- the HTTP methods that this constraint applies to -->
                <http-method>POST</http-method>
                <http-method>GET</http-method>
            </web-resource-collection>
            <!-- the user roles that should be permitted access to this resource collection -->
            <auth-constraint>
                <description>Only allow those users that are in the following role</description>
                <role-name>user</role-name>
            </auth-constraint>
            <!-- declare a transport guarantee, if any -->
            <user-data-constraint>
                <transport-guarantee>NONE</transport-guarantee>
            </user-data-constraint>
        </security-constraint>
        ... 5) I have a simple login form (LoginForm.jsp) which encodes j_security_check:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
    <html>
        <head>
            <title>HIM Client Login</title>
        </head>
        <body>
            <form method="POST"
                  action='<%= response.encodeURL( "j_security_check" ) %>'>
                Username: <input type="text"
                                 name="j_username"><br/>
                Password: <input type="password"
                                 name="j_password"><br/>
                <br/>
                <input type="submit"
                       value="Login">
                <input type="reset"
                       value="Reset">
            </form>
        </body>
    </html>
        Can anyone see from the above that I have missed something, or that I have done something wrong ?
    Is there a way to get more information ? All I see in the access log file are logs of the requests for the servlet, j_security_check, and the login and error pages, and it might be helpful to have a little more information as to what is going on.
    Thanks in advance for any insight.
    -James

    Hi,
    I have exactly followed your configurations. However, I dont have the same database tables in my database. I used the following:
    <module-option name="principalsQuery">select password from s_users where username=?</module-option>
    <module-option name="rolesQuery">select role from s_users where username=?</module-option>However, when I try to logon I get the following error message from jboss:
    "ERROR [org.jboss.security.auth.spi.UsersRolesLoginModule] Failed to load users/passwords/role files
    java.io.IOException: No properties file: users.properties or defaults: defaultUsers.properties found" although I do not want to use property files as I want to use the oracle database.
    Any help appreciated!

    Hi Frank,
    In the example, the "{cache-name}" is supposed to be replaced by the database's table or view name that will be queried for the data to be cached. It's purpose is demonstrate how to pass parameters to the class constructor.

  • Why use XML

    I can't find any true tangible benefits to using XML
    to transfer data from legacy systems, in comparison to say, using an external file and loading into existing
    schema objects, which we do use.
    We have 4-6 internal systems, and many many external systems, that currently use text or DB links to transfer data around, and of course the manager hears the catch-phrase-of-the-day XML, all time time and wants us to use it. We do a lot of complicated reading of the files, i.e. headers and multiple layers of detail (header & detail lines can have infinite detail lines)
    Can somebody offer up why use XML? (white pages, something I can get proof with) or why not to use it.
    To me, completly different layer of technology, everybody has a "standard", nobody has the same standard.
    More storage in the database (being a DBA I don't like this), and seems to need its own full time employee to manage it (the IT director won't like that).

    SO... you STILL have to get what the file looks like... can't be read from inside the file (like a decent CSV), hasn't somebody realized that keep layout seperate from the data during outside transfers is stupid?
    I understand the tags etc, I guess because disk is free, and networks are faster, lets clog them up with useless info <the tags>. I have loaded/extracted XML from the database (what a PITA that is) before I asked this question.
    My question is, can somebody please point me in a direction of the benefits of using XML to transfer data between systems.
    Why use XML? Why is XML better than a CSV (or formatted text file)????
    What benefits does it have over those file types??
    A great list of pro/cons would be nice... everything on oracle web sites, and google say all basically say the same thing... "use it because it's new and neat"
    Why should we spend hundreds of man hours reinventing the wheel?
    What tangible benefits are there to using it?
    Might be the wrong forum, if so, please point me in the right direction.

    I need to use the form applications need to use MS ACCESS database as backend rather than ORACLE. How to reach it. Kindly help me to reslove it.
    Can you please tell me the steps involved in this process.

    I'm going to guess that you have a good reason for wanting to use MS-Access as the back-end database, but why use Forms as the front-end? Why not just use Access's UI?
    Now to your question. You can connect to MS-Access using ODBC. Here is a [link to a good discussion|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3763074] on using ODBC. Hope this helps.

  • Using a Database View and Untyped Dataset

    Post Author: kramer9802
    CA Forum: .NET
    Product:Crystal Reports XI Release 2
    Version:
    Patches Applied:
    Operating System(s):XP
    Database(s):Oracle
    Error Messages: Steps to Reproduce: Normally, the reports we create are designed based on Oracle tables. Then the data source is set to a dataset I populate in code from a SQL statement. I know this isn't necessarily how it is done in the documentation, but it has been working. What I am trying to do now is use a database view to design the report and then populate the my dataset based on a query on the view for VB code. When I do that my dataset only has one row, but my report is building based on all the rows returned by the view (Thousands). The sql  is something like this  Select * From xyz_view where record_id= ('The record the user wants to see')   The view basically pulls back the data from several tables and also pulls back a few lookup tables that have description of value fields. I would use formula fields for the description but there is a lot records. I know that you can't pass a parameter into a view, so that is why I use select statement against the view to filter it down to the specific record I want. So I guess my question is why does build the report based on all the records from the view rather than all the one record in the Dataset? If I do the same thing but design the report based on a table or serveral tables, then the report only contains records from the dataset. I think I kind of know that the report is ignoring the dataset, but I guess I just need to know if there is an easy way to make this work or do I need to reconsider how I design and populate the reports. The reports are non-embedded based on a business requirement. let me know if this doesn't make sense or you need more details. Thanks Kramer

    Honestly I do not know.
    This question is more of a design issue and would be better suited to Crystal Reports forum

    As an aside, technically speaking if you are using datasets then you should be designing the report against the schema of the dataset you are going to be passing, not the tables or storeprocs or views themselves.

  • Why use an external editor?

    I have done a search on this basic question, but everyone is at least one step ahead of me. I found lots of questions about using external editors, but none on why to use one if the first place.
    It's self-evident that the basic answer is to extend Aperture's capabilities. So let me narrow the focus of my question as follows:
    1. Just out of curiousity, there must be at least some overlap in things that Aperture does and what the external editor can do, correct?
    2. Can you share some guidelines as to when you would stay in Aperture itself and when you would  use the external editor through Aperture?
    3. An obvious question is why use Aperture when you have an external editor?  The most likely answer is that Aperture does some things better, and the external editor does other things better. So does it come down to experience in deciding which program to use for what? As someone whose post processing has, for years, been limited to cropping, that's a pretty daunting reality. Any advice anyone can offer to offset my inexperience would be appreciated. For example, someone on a share-your-image type forum just blasted me when I posted something labled as my first effort at using a RAW file. I made "local" changes here and there in the image. He told me I'm doing things "totally wrong" and I should make global changes, and avoid making local changes. I don't know if he's right or not, but if he is, how was I to know that? So again, any advice for a PP newb would be great.
    Thanks!
    Ben

    Good questions, Ben!
    And probably the answers are a matter of taste and personal preferences, and depending on the workflow we are using.
    2. Can you share some guidelines as to when you would stay in Aperture itself and when you would  use the external editor through Aperture?
    For me, the escape to an external editor is an occasionally necessary evil, if I really need to do things well, that Aperture cannot do.  The problem is, that using an external editor will break Aperture's lossless workflow; it will create an additional original image file, and Aperture cannot undo the edits done in the external editor. And the additional original files will be gigantic 16bit tiffs or PSD files. So I would never use the external editor without a pressing need.
    I use an external editor, if I need to create images with transparency or do advanced retouching that requires the composition of two or more images. That are things that Aperture cannot do.
    Or, if I have images that need lens correction or perspective correction.
    3. An obvious question is why use Aperture when you have an external editor?
    I use Aperture first of all, to keep my images organised - my Aperture library is my database of all photos I have taken during my lifetime.
    And I use Aperture to edit the images and to keep track of the edited image versions and how they relate. For 99% of my image processing needs Aperture is sufficient and great.
