Why use customized / particular exceptions instead java.lang.Exception

Hi,
Do any of you guys know where can I find a theorical statement / explanation about why use particular / customized exceptions instead java.lang.Exception? I am aware that it consumes more resources and becomes a heavier object, as well as the clearness when coding and all that stuff; however, my boss wants to see a tech document where all this is clearly stated. Any resource over there?
Regards

It is better to throw specific--or at least module- or
package-specific--excpetions, rather than Exception,
because then the caller knows what to expect. However,
if you declare "throws Exception", the caller can
still catch IOException, SQLException, etc.,
separately. He'll just have to be a really good
guesser as to which ones he should catch.True.
Also, there's no point in declaring "throws
NullPointerException." Any method can throw it without
declaring it. If you generate your own NPE (or other
unchecked exception) inside the method, then you
should document it in the javadoc comments, but you
don't need to put it in the throws clause. It doesn't
do any harm, but it's redundant and cluttersome.It was an example and I wasn't feeling too creative....excuse me. ;-) But yeah, I've never thrown NPE ever.
I'm assuming overhead caused by extending classes.At
the worst, it would be miniscule, or so I wouldthink.
What overhead is created by extending classes?Hmm, I was under the impression that a class the extended another class, inherited all of the other classes data (variables, etc.). Hence, you get something like this:
SuperClass1 + SubClass1 + SubClassOfSubcCass1 = Memory usuage for SubClassOfSubClass1.
Since adding postivie number will always end up increasing data, SubClassOfSubClass1 will use more dtat than SuperClass1.
Am I wrong?

  • Unmarshalling return; nested exception is: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException

    I think what I'm trying to achieve is probably very simple (or at least should be) but I've been trying for at least 5 hrs now:
    I'm using RMI for a distributed app I'm building for my degree.
    Up until today I got around the need for using a SecurityManager by including all shared classes (those I pass between client and server) in a class library .jar file referenced by both client and server projects.
    This has worked fine, but now I've coded a method that returns an object of a class that I do NOT want to include in the shared library (because I don't want the client to be able to construct these objects); therefore, I've decided to try and get the dynamic class loading working.
    I'm using netbeans and testing on a single computer.
    Here's what I'm trying:
    My main() method has the standard code I've seen: if (System.getSecurityManager() == null) System.setSecurityManager(new RMISecurityManager());
    In the server project's Run properties, I'm specifying VM Options: -Djava.security.policy=c:\security.policy -Djava.rmi.server.codebase="file://C:/"
    I've copied the ellusive class's .java file into C:\ to keep the URL simple, but I've also tried directing it to the netbean project's bin\ folder using '%20' for spaces, both with the same results - about a five second pause (so it's finding something I think) and then the error message from the client's output:
    error unmarshalling return; nested exception is: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: mypackage.myClass
    My policy file's contents are:
    grant {
    permission java.security.AllPermission;
    I've tried about 20 different ways of formatting the codebase argument's URL.. can anyone help?
    David
    p.s. my OS is Windows 7

    Thanks EJP,
    Yes, after posting I guessed it might want the .class file instead, so I directed it their instead - still no joy, unfortunately!
    I'm carrying out all testing on one computer, so (+if+ I could get it to work) a local codebase address would not be a problem.
    Noted about the server-side security manager. I might want to use callbacks, but the server still won't need to download class files from the client, so I'll still try and set the codebase, but will try without loading a security manager on the server-side.
    For the time being I've put the class in the shared library but have defined it within the same package as the server code. By doing this I've been able to set the class's accessibility back to default, but the client can still access it as Object (from the shared library).
    This solution is good enough, but I still wonder why the client refuses to accept the class file from the C:\ codebase.

  • Getting java.lang.Exception: Exception in sending Request :: null  Error

    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 10.2.0.1.0. My intention is to create a new database instance.
    Here are the steps I have taken,
    1. Using DBCA, I created a new database instance, oracle sid = MYORCL0318
    2. I created the tablespaces for this instance.
    then, I went to Enterprise Manager at http://<hostname>:5501/em
    Login = sys
    password = xxxxxxx
    role = SYSDBA
    After I login, I would get an Error like this
    java.lang.Exception: Exception in sending Request :: null
    Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix this?
    thanks
    ST

    1. When I clicked on the Performance tab, I'd get a screen that looks like this
    Database Login
    * User Name: SYS
    * Password: xxxxxxxxxxxxx
    * Connect String: MYORCL0318
    * Connect As: SYSDBA
    In other words, I am kicked out by the system. (I am new to this forum, did not figure out how to attach the screen shot, so I hope you find my description of the screen acceptable.)
    2. emctl status returned the following

  • Exception occurred: java.lang.IncompatibleClassChangeError: Uninplemented i

    Hello all,
    I have a problem when I try to access AS400 with CrEme in my PDA.
    I have CrEme Evaluation Version V.4 in my Motorola MC55.
    For developing I have used Netbeans 6.7 with pJSCP V4.12 Emulator
    In addition, jars included are:
    jt400Micro.jar (for accesing AS400)
    symbolclases.jar (Symbol Mobility Developer Kit v1.4 for Java for scanning in the PDA)
    When I launch the application, It works fine, and I can scan with the PDA barcodes.
    But when I try to access to AS400, in the line -> com.ibm.as400.micro.JdbcMeDriver.getConnection(),
    Exception occurred: java.lang.IncompatibleClassChangeError: Uninplemented interface method
    It seems a problem with JDK but, that driver needs JDK 1.2 and CrEme V.4 support until JDK 1.3.
    Do you Know what problem can be?
    I hope your answers. Thanks in advance.

    an IncompatibleClassChangeError usually results when you have versioning problems in a serialized class. Usually the problem goes like this:
    You make a class, and make it serializable,
    You store the class persistently somewhere, or leave a process running with a serialized version of the class available,
    Then, you make a change to the class, and recompile the class.
    You try to de-serialize the first version of the class into the second version of the class.
    There are rules around what constitutes a compatible change to a serializable class, and what will break this. It is quite inflexible, that is why there are many caveats in the swing classes about not using Serializable for persistence (better to use xml in many cases).
    I recommend reading the serialization specification, particularly the part about versioning classes.

  • Java.lang.exception: word is too big

    Hi everybody!
    I have a problem need your help. At present I have a server-client application, server running on Linux enviroment, client running on Window enviroment. After a period of time, there is a exception thrown to console: java.lang.Exception: word is too big, try to use less letter ..... And at that time, no more client can connect to client, however clients which connected to server from before still run as normal. Please help to fix this. Thank you very much

    I can not upload the source code here because it's so big. Before I have never ever met this error. Nearly I have a new server linux machine, and I run my program on this machine, as a result I have had this problem. I say I can catch this exception means I try to trace it by in catch and throw but nothing can be catched. And "word is too big, try to use less letters..." is not mine. I saw it in console. At first, I don't know why client can not connect to server, so I try to find out it in console mode and as you know I find out this exception. If anybody have ever met this error. Please explain it to me and help me to resolve it. Thanks

  • Java.lang.Exception

    I am new to 10g DBA. Everything going well for me. But when I am trying to connect the host using the id and password I am getting the error message "*java.lang.Exception: IOException in sending Request :: Connection refused: connect*". Except this everything is OK in my OEM. Can anybody help me in this regard. I need some urgent help. Do I need install any other software or configuration?

    First, try just quitting iTunes (you may want to restart your system) and try again.
    If that doesn't fix the problem. click on your account name in the top right corner of the iTunes window. When a second window appears asking for your password, hit "logout" instead. Then click on the "login" in the top right corner again and type in your user name and password. Then try logging in again. If it still doesn't work, repeat the process two or three times and see if that will eventually clear the error (it did for other users who've had the same problem in the past).
    Hope this helps.

  • Com.sap.engine.interfaces.messaging.api.exception.MessagingException: java.lang.NullPointerException in sap pi

    Hi all,
    I am working on SAP PI 7.3.1 SP09. Currently we have interfaces which uses 50200 port. I have created a http destination from nwa pointing to https://....url. So all of a sudden all the interfaces went to error state. After debugging i found that the port 50200 is replaced with 50201which is https port. After changing the port to initial value ie., 50200 all interfaces are working fine except the one which were pointing to https url and they are showing the following error description.

    Thank you for your hint. Maybe I just forgot to mention one important fact. We have second SAP Netweaver PI 7.1 which is completely our system. The first one I mentioned in first message is the customer's one. The one we have extra is also connected to MAXIMO and GIS. Settings of this interface is completely same among one thing:
    Patch level of XIAF:
    1. customers SAP PI level is
    Adapter Common Library Version: 1.7.1007.20081105173106.0000, NW07_07_REL (2008-11-07T17:29:47+0000)
    Adapter Application Version: 1.7.1007.20081105173106.0000, NW07_07_REL (2008-11-07T17:30:00+0000)
    2. our SAP PI level is
    Adapter Common Library Version: 1.7.1008.20100215155230.0000, NW07_08_REL (2010-02-15T17:19:21+0000)
    Adapter Application Version: 1.7.1008.20100215155230.0000, NW07_08_REL (2010-02-15T17:19:31+0000)
    Both of them has Axis Version: Apache Axis version: 1.4 Built on Apr 22, 2006 (06:55:48 PDT)
    Also important to mention is fact that same problem happened in our SAP PI, but we implemented last patch of XIAF and it has suddenly started to work. I have suspicion it is somehow connected to this patch. Btw. this patch contains a lot of notes regarding  AXIS framework (i.e. 1435998, 1150375, 1048268), so obviously some bugs of the AXIS adapter has been resolved by this patch.
    What do you think ?
    Thanks

  • JBO-29000: Unexpected exception caught: java.lang.StackOverflowError

    Hi Friends,
    I have built a custom OA Page using Master-Detail approach. When I launch/run the page it goes to the error page with following message. This is not consistence as some times it does work. We are not making any change, when it works.The cause is unknown. I have deployed this page to Application server and there also the same problem. Sometime it works and sometime it doesn't. Bouncing the Apache Server helped sometimes but not always.
    We are using RUP7 on 11.5.10.2.
    Please throw your ideas!

    Any idea to fix the error? Thanks in advance.

    i figured out the issue. Actually there was a method called findMaxId in one of my DAO and in the query i was using the actual column name instead of the id name.
