Why won't my iphone 3gs charge even though it is plugged in?

Hi guys, so I've had my 3gs for nearly 2 years. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that charging it wasn't going easy. When my iphone shuts down from no battery life and I plug it in to charge, it charges enough to turn itself back on, but when it eventually turns back on it won't charge anymore? Even though it is still plugged in and switched on by the plug. So I have to take out the USB, turn off the switch to the plug, turn the switch back on, plug the USB back in and it charges again.
BUT, recently not even that does it. I've tried different plug sockets, i've rebooted it. I've tried leaving the USB cable in and just turning on and off the plug switch.
So at the moment it's just going through a circle of running out of battery, charging and turning itself back on, having 4% battery and dying again and repeating.
So I googled my problem and didn't really find a solution. I mean the plug and USB cable are fine. Clearly it charges fine because it charges enough to turn itself back on when it's shut down.
I found out that when the iphone is plugged in but turned off it still charges so I tried this when it started itself up again, and it charges!!
But why won't it charge when the phone is on and plugged in??

Hi waplington123,
If your iPhone will not start up unless connected to power, you may want to troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Specifically -
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Best,
Brett L

  • Why won't my iPhone 6 charge with any other charger but the one it came with? please help!

My iPhone 6 won't charge with any other charger, can anyone explain why?

Make sure both the charger and connector are certified and that they are in good working order. Test them with another iPhone if possible. If the charger is working, then the problem might be the lighting connector port. Check and see if it is dirty. If not then there might be a hardware problem. Take the phone in to an Apple Store or authorized service provider for evaluation and possible replacement. Take the cable and charger as well.

  • Why won't my iPhone 5 charge?

My iPhone is a 5S that I bought right before iOS7 came out. Once I updated the phone, it experienced a lot of crashes. iMessage doesnn't always work, my apps shut down, etc. My biggest problem, though, has been that my phone no longer charges. It will charge for a short period of time, sometimes up to an hour, or sometimes as little as a second before saying either "This accessory is not supported", "This accessory may not be supported", or identifying my Apple charger as one not made by Apple. If the charger remains connected after this message appears, crashes occur. The other day, my phone alarm didn't go off in the morning, and my phone was saying it was 11:57 am when it was actually 2:13 pm... I have the same Apple brand charger I've always had with the lightning cable attached. It's not an issue with the cord or charger cube because this happens with every charging device I plug it into, including other iPhone lightning chargers made by Apple and not run through an adapted, my MacBook Pro, and my iHome. This is driving me crazy, and no one I talk to at the Apple store says they've seen this charging problem before, even though I know they have. Please help!

Since your phone is still under warranty, take it to an apple store and have them replace it, since you have a faulty iphone, and its not usable.
For your charging problems, please read this in order to resolve those issues:

    Hope I helped.

  • Why won't my iPhone 3GS connect to my carrier?

I currently have 3 iPhones. Two work great but one will not connect to the carrier. The phone is locked to Rogers (in Canada) but no sim card I have tried has worked so far even though all are from Rogers. The phone just continues to search for the carrier and displays "no service". I've contacted Rogers with no success and the people at the Apple store says it does connect but they never showed me it working.
What can I do to get this iPhone working? It's a 32 Gb iPhone 3GS.

There are a myriad of possibilities. To try the easiest first, turn off your Netgear router for 15 seconds, then turn it back on. Sometimes the DHCP daemon (the software that assigns IP addreeses in the router) dies and needs to be rebooted.
Next is to verify that your router has the latest firmware version from the manufacturer's web site.
Other steps are to go into Settings/WiFi and attempt to connect, then tap thr right arrow next to the network name and tap "forget this network". Then reboot the phone and try again.
Next go into Settings/General/Reset and Reset Network settings.

  • Why won't my iPhone 3gs detect or connect to wifi?

I have had my iPhone 3gs for almost a year now. Rarely do I use the wifi, I find that using my 3g is faster. However, recently I have tried connecting to wifi and my phone cannot detect any sort of wifi, while my laptop and friend's do. I've researched and found that it may be a hardware issue? I'm looking for suggestions on what to do. I have tried reseting my network settings and nothing changed. Thanks!

Did you get it sorted.  Does your 3GS work with WIFI now.  Its been awhile you posted above so wondering how you got along.  I find myself in same situation. Its been like this for the past year.  I have tried everything I read on various forums including this.  I have now booked appointment with apple to get my 3GS checked.  Does anyone with similar experience tell us how long it takes and what happens.  I am going there first time. My 3GS is out-of-warranty. I hope they dont charge a lot.

  • Why won't my iPhone 3gs create a backup when sync with my new Mac?

When I attempt to backup my iphone 3gs with my new iMac, it syncs fine but won't create a backup. The apps aren't saving on iTunes so I can't upgrade the phone without losing some apps. I never had a problem with my old PC. Is there something I need to do to authorize a backup on the new computer? I already authorized the computer with iTunes so I could play my music, but I must be missing something with the phone. Please help.

  • Why won't Firefox block pop-ups even though configured to do so?

I have the browser set up to block pop-ups. It blocks the pop-ups from my bank even though I have repeatedly made that page "allowed" but allows subscription pop-ups on dozens of pages. Nearly all of these sub pop-ups force me to close them to see the page it hides. How can I actually block those annoying actions?

  • 98-99% charge even though it was plugged in for 24 hours

Any idea why I sometimes don't get to 100%. Sometimes yes and sometimes no....It's not time since I left it plugged in for 24 hours.

Pretty normal with Apple products. My MacBook now reads 95% even though it's been plugged in for the last 24 hrs (most always is). If you really care about this I believe there is a battery meter calibration process you can apply.

  • Why won't my iPhone 5s charge on my laptop

I plug my iPhone 5s into the wall and it charges but when I plug it into my laptop it doesn't charge. It's like my phone doesn't even recognize it's being connected to the computer. I've tried different USB cables and it doesn't work but my husbands 5s charges and connects to the laptop perfectly fine!

    Did you resolve your problem?
I have the same issue, and nothing works.
I am computer savy so I did all the steps, twice.
I also tried it on other PCs, and with other cables, as well as other iphones and ipads on my laptop.
I even installed another partition of other windows on same laptop - all work well, except my main windows installation on my main laptop with my new 5s iphone. IT isnt recognized for charging or to be connected to itunes.
When I turn on my laptop, it gets power like the other iphone which is working well.
on windows startup in middle it stops. then when windows are loaded, other iphone is connected and powered and recognizable, but this one neither.
I managed to copy old iphone to new 5s 64GB throgh another laptop, but my music and other stuff are on laptop installation I cant reach.
    please help!!!

  • Why does my iPad say it's not charging even though it's plugged in?

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

If you are trying to charge from a USB port on your computer, the port may not supply enough power to charge the iPad. It may even be charging but very very slowly and it will say not charging. You should use the power adapter that came with the iPad and plug the adapter into  a wall socket for the most efficient way to charge.
