Wi-fi always has to be hand connected when switching programs or useres

I have an imac running on 10.7.5 that wi-fi always has to be hand connected when switching programs or users. Can anyone help? Is something wrong with my settings? It will also look for all surrounding wi-fi connections, I cannot seem to get it to only connect to mine.

There are some apps that let you check the speed of your Wifi or let you analyze your network connections.
Search for "Wifi finder", "System Status" or similar apps.

  • Odd problem with iPhoto always seeing my iPhone as connected when not

    I have started having a problem with iPhoto8. When it starts it always goes to the import photos screen and has a couple dozen icons (with no image) and filenames to import from my iPhone. The problem is my iPhone is not connected. It shows up as mounted on the left side of iPhoto. I can right click and unmount it and it goes away, but next time I restart iPhoto it is there again. If I try and click Import all it goes through the motions and asks to delete the originals, I select yes. Then it displays an error dialog with all the filenames listed saying they are corrupt or blank (which I would expect because my phone is not connected).
    Does anyone know why it thinks my phone is connected when it is not or what to do?

    Do you have wifi sync enabled for those devices?
    Select the device, click the Summary tab.
    If it is enabled, there's no need to eject the device, even with the cable plugged in.

  • Why does itunes always show my iphone as connected when it is not

    When I plug in one of our Apple devices to sync to our home computer, etc., iTunes shows the device I want to sync, but it also always shows my iphone as plugged in too. (At the top where it says Devices). Not a big deal, but is there a way to remove this instead of always hitting the eject button?

    I have four email addresses feeding into my Thunderbird (on mac) which I have used for years. In recent months, though, whenever I receive an email, the popup notification gives the sender as a person who occasionally emails me, never any other sender name.     I have had the same problem and I think I have a solution, at least one that is working for me.
    In mail preferences - accounts - advanced, turn on "Use IDLE command if server supports it"
    In mail preference - General, set Check for new messages: Manually.
    Don't check for new messages manually, (still doesn't work) but wait for the IDLE command to push new messages to you.
    This is for a GoDaddy mail server, using Apple Mail 7.1 on OS X 10.9.1.

  • Ipod mini wont connect all of a sudden, always has before.

    all of a sudden my mini wont connect. It always has worked before, but today when I connected it wouldnt. A window pops up saying "You have inserted a disc containing no volumes MAC OSX can read. and so on. And just doesnt work. i am using the same cord I always have and my ipod is working fine on its own. whats up?

    you need to go to

    search for ipod linux and download the ipod linux installer
    warning the ipod will lose all of the songs on it by doing this fix
    use the ipod linux installer tell the installer during the installation that you want to keep the stock ipod operating system on it and the new linux os on it as well
    then after install you will notice the ipod will not boot this is no problem ipod linux isn't designed to run off of the ipod mini so when you use it with a ipod mini the mini frezzes on start up
    then reset by pressing the play and menu option together
    it will reset your ipod and then you will be able to use your ipod once again i had my ipod completly crash
    and was able to restore it using this trick but warning after your ipod is reset please use the ipod updater
    or you will experiance problems and i do mean problems
    this is the trick apple doesn't want you to know about so they can charge you to get your ipod fixed and after posting this it will most likly be deleted
    I am not responsible for anything that goes wrong worst thing that happens is you still have to send it into apple

  • OS 10.4.6. has broken dialup connectivity when using fast user switching

    I installed OS 10.4.6. It seems to have broken dialup connectivity when using fast user switching when switching from one user to the next.
    For dialup, it is extreamly annoying that I can not resume downloading a file from were it got cut off, but now, if another user wants to check their email, my download always gets broken and has to be restarted. Dialup is slow enough with out having to start from scratch even more frequently, now.
    Also, in earlier versions of 10.2 or 10.3 (I don't remember which), I was able to switch users and maintain listening to a single users' iTunes.
    I would like to be able to switch users and not lose either my dialup network connection or the primary users currently playing iTunes songs.
    Perhaps for iTunes, one should be able to chose to mute another users' instance of iTunes, if it is currently playing.

    I have not tried replicating this but might be able to provide some additional information.
    We use network login accounts on our desktop computers. Fast User switching deliberately will not work for multiple network login accounts. (Remember network login accounts normally also have an associated network home directory mounted via AFP.)
    Now a bit of background about volumes and mount points under Mac OS X. Under Mac OS X, any additional drive (or more accurately 'volume') is listed under the 'Volumes' folder, remember also that Mac OS X is a Unix operating system. So just as normal for Unix, the boot drive is '/' or the root level and Volumes is a folder in it. The underlying Mac OS X software automatically 'attaches' and additional volumes as sub-folders in the 'Volumes' folder (in Unix speak these are called 'Mount Points'), if you have an external hard-disc called 'Fred' then this would be represented by the following path
    /Volumes/Fred
    If you happen to have two volumes with the same name connected at the same time then while in the Finder they may show up with the same name, in Unix they would have different names automatically assigned to keep them separate like so
    /Volumes/Fred
    /Volumes/Fred 1
    Now getting back to the Fast User switching problem and AFP volumes, when you login to a File Server volume it also is automatically added to the Volumes folder, so if we have a File Server volume called 'Shared' it would look like
    /Volumes/Shared
    With Fast User switching potentially both user accounts could be accessing the same /Volumes/Shared which means both user accounts would be talking to the server via the same File Server login, hence the possibility for one of the Fast User accounts to be using the 'wrong' permissions.

  • WRT160n v3 has slow connection when multiple users are connected

    As of last night my router has been producing slow connectivity when multiple users are connected to it, but it's perfectly fine when only one user is connected.
    I am on a laptop myself, but we also have a second laptop and a desktop where the modem and router are set up.
    I have upgraded the firmware so that is up to date.
    We have Comcast Fiber Optics so my internet speed is normally quite fast even when all of my computers are connected.
    Some settings that I have that might help resolve the issue:
    I am using DHCP Configuration.
    My Channel Width is set to 20 MHz and I am using Channel 11.
    The Security Mode is set to WPA Personal. I had it on WPA2 Personal but I read that changing to WPA Personal might help and so far it doesn't seem to have done anything.
    I set the Beacon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, and RTS Threshold to 2304.
    Everything else is set to the default factory configuration.
    Just today I received a notice that said "Windows has detected an IP Address Conflict", but ever since I reinstalled the Firmware it hasn't come back. I've rebooted both my laptop and the desktop to confirm it hasn't come back as well.
    I consider myself to be computer savy, but I just can't figure out what the problem is as I've tried everything that I could think of including reconfiguring my router and restarting my modem as well. This problem has presented itself in the past before but unfortunately I cannot remember what I did to fix it.

    i fixed it following these steps
    1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer .
    2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type http://192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go.
    3. The log-in window will appear.
    4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.
    5. Click on the the MAC Address Clone sub tab and click on "Clone your PC's MAC" then save the settings.
    6. Go back to the "Basic Setup" tab and set the "Internet Connection Type" to PPPoE.
    7. Enter your username and password given by the Internet Service Provider.
    8. Look for the LAN IP which is 192.168.1.1.
    9. Change the IP address to 192.168.2.1 then save the settings.
    10. Shut down everything for 2 minutes.
    11. Power on. (Starting from the modem then the router and lastly your PC).

    Been trying up update to the latest IOS 5.0.1 on my iPad and iPhone, on two different machines,
    but always get a "No Network Connection" when I try to download the update.
    I have a working Internet connection as all other apps on all my machines and devices work fine.

It;s been working perfectly up until now.  I have no problem on my home WIFI, or through personal hotspot working through my iPhone 5.
    I have worked with AT&T, replaced the SIM card with a new one, and done a backup/restore to factory settings, all with the same result that when I turn Cellular
    Data on, with or without Enable LTE, it goes into "searching" mode, or reports "no service".  My iPhone 5 works perfectly on iOS 8.1.2, on Cellular.  I've browsed the blogs and have tried Apple's suggested fix, all to no result. 
    Oddly enough, every once in a while I do get connected to the network for a short ime (minutes), but it always returns to "searching".
    I've filed a report with Apple, along with a request that they contact me, but no results yet.

    Hello razmee209.  Thank you for your response.  I spent the better part of yesterday working with Apple Support.  They tried their best, to include backing up photos to my HP laptop, backing up the iPad to iCloud, then resetting the iPad in total.  Same problem.  I restored from the cloud to recover my apps, same problem.
    AT&T installed a new sim card - same problem.  I spent time with AT&T Support yesterday, too.  In both cases, (Apple and AT&T) the support techs who worked with me were extremely polite, courteous and helpful to the best of their abilities, but I think the problem lies deeper, and nobody at Apple is admitting they have a problem with iOS 8, that I'm aware of.
    I didn't have this issue before I upgraded to iOS 8.1.2.
    Everything else with the iPad works fine:  WIFI, Personal Hotspot, email, all my apps, etc.
    In browsing the web for this issue I see that many other folks have the same problem.  I filed a report with Apple this morning, requesting that they contact me, but no word yet.  I was going to go to iPhone 6, and had been considering the iPad Air 2, but I see reports of this problem with those units as well.
    At this point I don't think I'll be spending any more money with Apple, at least not till this issue is resolved.

  • My iphone 3gs is not working properly, when switched on it says 'Update Completed' as though it has just been updated. On the next screen it says to 'Connect to iTunes'. It doesn't, however, connect to iTunes and more often than not just resets itself.

It doesn't, however, connect to iTunes and just resets itself over and over until power is gone. Occasionally after switching on and off a few times it functions normally for a few hours and some times even a couple of days but eventually always turns itself off and goes back to the 'Update Completed' screen. Does anyone know what might be causing this and/or a way of fixing it?

This also happened when I tried to charge my iphone in my car with an adaptor which used to work before too. Any ideas on why my phone is suddenly not charging anymore??

    I removed the AMDS as part of the instructions for completely removing itunes. Nothing changed unfortunately. I don't understand why it is happening!
    I have already checked for lint, etc as you suggested, but don't have another USB cable on me at the moment. I'll be returning home tomorrow so will try then, but I would have thought the cable was fine as it still charges the phone through an AC adaptor fine. Thanks for the suggestions!

    Recently Time Machine somehow always has something to back up - even when the only thing being done on my Mac is some internet browsing. Those backups are normally always around 30-60mb, I can't believe I'm creating that amount of new data each hour - I would surely see a dramatic dip in my Mac hard drive space!? Can anyone shed any light on what's contained within those back ups?
    Also, very occasionally, when TM attempts a back up my wireless connection for that particular Mac will fail, and my network prefs tell me that I don't have an IP connection. Other macs/devices are able to connect to the router just fine whilst all this is going on. Sometimes, after 10 or so minutes it reconnects of it's own accord, other times I have to restart the router.
    My set up is as follows: WD 1TB Drive connected to Netgear router.
    Any help / advice much appreciated - thanks in advance!

    As Baltwo says, those are very small. Among other things, your browser history is likely changing, perhaps some cookies were added, and if you've added a bookmark, all that will be backed-up, too.
    And there are some usually small things being updated by other processes.
    See #A2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a couple of apps that will show exactly what's being backed-up.
    If those small backups seem to be taking too long, see #D2 there for some possible fixes.

    Since I updated to iCloud, (which may or may not be related) Mail on my MacBookPro 10.6.8 has been unable to connect to MobileMe more than once or twice per day. Mail on my iPhone 4 and my old iMac has no problems. When there is no service a yellow warning triangle appears adjacent to the Inbox and Connection Doctor reports,"Trying to log into this MobileMe IMAP account failed. Verify that username and password are correct."  Since it does fetch Mail from time to time they cannot be wrong.... can they? Should I update to 10.7 and if so what does that entail?

    You have been using MobileMe's email settings, which sometimes continue to work for a time after migration but then get turned off. iCloud's mail server settings are different. Strictly speaking Lion 10.7.2 is required for iCloud, and on that Mail is set up automatically.
    Snow Leopard cannot access most of iCloud's facilities, however you can set Mail up manually to access your email. The method is described here:
