Widow/orphan control

Does anyone know of a good way to control widows and orphans of the details section?  I've googled it but didn't find anything particularly useful.  IE: Going to the group expert and keeping the group together is not precise enough.  Anyone have a good solution?-Stephanie

Normally you encounter a widowed/orphaned group header and/or footer. Check out these KBase articles if a widowed/orphaned group header/footer is the issue.

  • Is there widow/orphan control in DW CS4?

I can see help for InDesign and others but is there similar for dreamweaver?
    Much appreciated!

There is not, as far as I know, window or orphan control in Dreamweaver.
You will need to determine your tolerance for short lines...is it one word (ick!), two words (better), three words... and add non-breaking spaces to suit. You can glue together the last two or three words. Unfortunately, that might make your next-to-last line look atrocious.
Keep in mind that your pages will be seen in whatever fonts the viewer happens to have on his/her computer, so careful control of paragraph text rag is a true waste of time. Somewhat better in headline sizes, but still...

  • How to find Widow/Orphan in pdf

    Hi Friends
Is it possible to find or identify widow/orphan page in pdf using Java script or acrobat sdk

PDF does not (in general) contain any information on text flow, paragraphs, text blocks etc. If you can define a rule to discover widows and orphans from text position, you can use it, but there are no other cues. Difficult job, and unreliable.

  • Orphan control/keep together problem

Is there a tutorial on orphan control somewhere with some examples?
I have a report with all the keep together section expert stuff selected, but I still have one group of data that is moved on to another page sometimes, and it is driving me nuts.  Thanks!

Search the NOTES (kbases) for "keep group together" and/or "keep section together" and you'll find a nice article that spells out how each works and how they can affect each other.
If you can't find it - reply and I can look it up and paste it into a reply here.

Is there any kind of autoformating that can be done using CSS

  • Widows and orphans

Does InDesign CS4 have any widow/orphan control settings?  I couldn't find anything in the help section.  It seems like I saw a GREP to control this a while back, though it looked pretty complicated.  I searched just now and couldn't find anything, so I may have confused that with something else.  My co-workers complain if a paragraph ends in a single word on the last line.  Sometimes I stick in "no breaks" when I'm reading through the articles, but that gets tedious...
    Thanks, Phyllis

In my experience, this is something that you want to fix manually and judiciously. In short paragraphs (think bulleted lists, where each item is about 1-3 lines long), forcing the last two words to stick together can be the difference between reasonable text wrap and something that's outlandishly spaced out. In fact, I usually keep "Hyphenate last word" turned off, but I make exceptions for short paragraphs that end in long words. In the end, it's more important that it looks good and reads easy than follows all those composition "rules".

  • Half of my doc's citations won't show up on the bottom of the page as footnotes, while the other half is fine.

    Hello all,
I'm using Microsoft Word for Mac 2011. I've been working on a document with lots of citations, and it's the weirdest thing, but footnotes for citations 66 - 126 won't appear at the bottom of the page. All others (1-66, 126 and above) appear as they should,
on the bottom of the page where the data is located. So in other words, there are about four pages in my word doc that show
no footnotes, even though when I add a citation to the content, the superscript numerals show up. It's like the footnotes are hidden or something, but I just can't figure out how to get them to show.
Any and all help is so appreciated! Thanks.

    Hi,
Please check the settings of your paragraphs around the footnote reference using
Format > Paragraph > Line and page breaks: Keep with next, Keep lines together, Widow/Orphan control. Disable those that seem redundant.

  • Acrobat PDFmaker is ignoring hard page breaks in Word docx

I'm working with a client's Word docx file which is formatted almost entirely with tables and uses hard page breaks throughout. When the document is exported to a PDF using Acrobat PDFMaker, some of the hard page breaks are rendered but some of them are completely ignored. In those cases, section breaks, extra spaces and anything else is ignored, too. It simply runs the table and/or text together as if there was nothing between them. I'm totally baffled. I turned off all widow/orphan control and keep options.

Glad you found a solution. I am not quite sure what you did or why what was suggested did not work. If you can ever post a document or part of such that demonstrates the problem and the inability of Acrobat to resolve it, I would be interested (a learning process!).
In terms of WORD, I have seen many forms that folks create in WORD and have similar problems. In many cases they like to use as much of the page as possible. When I try to print the form on my printer, or even view it, it is generally messed up. This WORD form aspect is similar to the book issue you have mentioned. It is characteristic of the reflow of word processors based on the printer metrics.
You might find this link (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/preserve-original-appearance-for-viewing-or-pr inting-HP005189614.aspx) helpful in maintaining the layout. In OFFICE 2007 use of printer metrics was turned off by default in the Options>Advanced>Compatibility. I believe they turned it back in with later updates and versions. The article also mentions the issues with various fonts and the need to embed fonts. Unfortunately, the newer versions of WORD do not embed the fonts of vector graphics.

  • When i press tab button into Text Field data automatically show from existing table in new Window form

    Hi Expert team
please give me solution as soon as possible

Thank you for your reply, Paul.  Unfortunately this suggestion didn't solve the issue.
After experimenting with it for a bit, it seemed that it might be related to widow/orphan control, but it occurs even with widow/orphan control turned off.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Column Problem

Hi. I'm having a problem inserting a column on my page.
Basically, I have my resume which is all in a single column, but towards the end, I want to include a section of "computer skills" that is in 2-column format (so it doesn't run very long down the page.
I insert the layout break before that 2-column section, highlight it, and make it into 2 columns. The problem is, it's putting about 4 lines of blank space before that column. If I try to delete that blank space, it removes my layout break and makes the entire resume in 2 columns.
Am I doing something wrong here? Any help would be greatly appreciate.
    -Tim

It's possible that you have "Prevent widow & orphan lines" checked in the More tab of the text inspector & this is "pushing" some text to the next line making the columns/pages uneven. This is checked by default & will not allow less than two lines of a paragraph to be on different pages or columns. There are a couple of things I do to "manage" this & still leave the widow & orphan control on. I will either decrease the point spacing after a paragraph by one point for one or more paragraphs or decrease the line spacing to 0.9. Both of these are done in the Text tab of the text inspector.

  • Incompatible versions

    Hello,
I need some help with opening newer versions of InDesign in older versions.
At my work I have InDesign CS3 and my home I have InDesign CS4. I can´t open the files I have in my house in my work.
    Please somebody help me!
    Luiza

Sorry.Your English seems quite good to me.
First, .inx is listed as "InDesign CS3 Interchange" format in the file type list.
Second, any features you use in CS4 that are new and unsupported in CS3 will be lost, and due to differnces in how the text composers work in the two versions it is very common to see a block of text wrap differently in the two verisons. This will happen right away in CS3, but only occurs in CS4 when you edit, so it can be very surprising. For a one-page document this may not be an issue, but it can affect things like chapter ends or widow/orphan control in longer documents that are text heavy. If you are going to try to work on the same document at work and at home over a period of time, switching back and forth repeatedly, you should be working in the same version of InDesign for best results.

  • Table rows are breaking on seperate pages...

I have table which has 20 rows:
First 3 rows are on one page, then half of the page is blank hen remaining 17 rows are on second page.
How can I keep table from breaking rows. I want all rows in table to follow one another.
    Please help. Thanks.

The Keep With settings are found in Table > Format > Row Format...
Note: the first row on the second page may also have a Start setting that tells it to be at the top of a page or column.
The Widow/Orphan control just specifies how many rows to keep together (widow is the first page; orphan is the second page) when a table needs to split across a page. The higher the number, the more rows are forced to stay together.

  • Deleting Thru a Page Break

I have text on the first line of a page and want to move it to the bottom of the previous page. I put the cursor before the first character of the second page and Delete. The line appears on the previous page but has (1) moved its tabs, and (2) the first character of the line plus a "." plus a space appears before the correct text. What gives?

Ok, so I cut and paste the text. Then I went into text inspector and turned off all widow/orphan controls. that seems to have fixed the problems.

  • Para tag: White text against a shaded box

    Hi,
Any ideas how to achieve this?
I tried the one cell one column table route, but that flushes out the table to page 2 if anchor is at page 1.
Any possibilities to use a thick line that is baseline shifted upwards in some way?
    Best wishes,
    Mats

Well, you may want to check your table property settings, because that push isn't default behaviour -- something in your setup is pushing it, or its position could be at the bottom of a page. Could be table position, widow/orphan control, or row property settings, or something else.
Second, yes, you can use a sequence of two tags to place a frame from the Reference page first and then text over it. I'd use Frame Below in the first tag, then a negative value in the space above of the second tag to place the text properly. It'll take some twiddling, but it'll work reliably once you have the tag team set up.

  • Large spaces between topics

    Hello,
I am using RoboHelp 6. When I generate Print Documentation, I
find that there are several lines of whitespace between each topic.
I have tried to solve this issue by changing the Paragraph settings
in the Word 2003 template I am using. Since each topic title has a
"Heading 2" style, I have made changes to the Paragraph setting for
the "Heading 2" style within the Word template.
The Paragraph settings I currently have for the "Heading 2"
    style are as follows:
    Indents and Spacing Tab
    General -- Alignment: Left
    Indentation -- Left: 0 pt; Right: 0
    pt; Special: (none)
    Spacing -- Before: 0 pt; After: 0 pt;
    Line Spacing: Single
    Line and Page Breaks Tab
    Pagination boxes checked --
Widow/Orphan Control, Keep With Next (The rest are
    unchecked.)
Does RH put that large amount of whitespace between topics,
or is it my template? Is there anything I can do to reduce this
    amount of whitespace?
    Thanks!
