WiebeTech Sata Dock V4

Anyone using the WiebeTech Sata Dock v4?
http://www.wiebetech.com/products/satadock.php
I was researching a swapable external enclosure when I came across this unit and am seeking input from more technically hardware savvy peeps.
Aside from quick swapability, what benefits/problems would be associated with connecting/using a 'bare' external harddrive?...like is it gonna be bouncing around and doing the jimmy-shake...stuff like that?
May seem like an ig'nant question...just seems too good to be true...
Knowing WiebeTech as very reputable, I guess I simply don't get that having a drive sitting open like that is a good thing...am I mistaken?
Thanks much,
Kevan

I haven't used the SATA dock, but I have used their ComboDock (800 FW & USB 2). It has worked very well. I personally would not hesistate to purchase another product from WiebeTech.
I also have a couple of these... use for archive not capture/scratch. I don't believe they are SATA.

I just upgraded my hard drive and now need to transfer the data from the old hard drive to the new.  I was told to use a SATA dock but I am not quite sure how to use one.  I thought it best to either find out how to use one or find out if there is a better way rather than going about it on my own.  How do I solve this quandry?

Now, from your old hard drive, go to your old itunes folder, and drag each artists folder into itunes. You can do it all at once if you have a few artists, but there have been reports of itunes locking up if too much is being is being imported at once

  • Kernel Panic when powering off TB SATA dock

This did not happen in 10.10.1. I'm on my 2013 Mac pro.
New issue with the installation of 10.10.2. If I power on the TB SATA dock and mount an SATA disk then later eject the discs, the shut the power off the TB SATA dock it crashes the OS with a kernel panic. The Mac restarts itself. Yesterday there was no black kernel panic screen but on restart a crash report was generated and sent to Apple. Just now it happened again and there was a kernel panic screen (then the machine self-restarted) but no Apple crash report was generated to be sent out.
I pulled this off the Crash Reporter via Console but they don’t look like crash reports I’ve seen before so tell me what to look for and where and I'll post that.

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
    SX-Virtual Link
    Soundflower
If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can identify which one is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • SATA Docking Stations such as New Technology Voyager Q: Drive Wear?

I am updating a couple G4s to SATA and want to add a external SATA dock. As a starting point I am looking at the Voyager Q:
    http://www.newertech.com/products/voyagerq.php
The manual says how to connect the unit and how to mount the drive icon on the desktop (i.e., make sure its off, insert drive, and turn on), but it does not say what to do to un-mount the drive.
Do you simply drag the drive icon from the desktop into the trash and it then it safely spins the drive to a stop (after which you manual eject it with the button on the unit)? Or is this, and similar units, sudddenly cutting power to the drive - the equivalent of losing power on your Mac?
I am intending to archive material to SATA drives which will be duplicated and replaced every so often so I am concerned about premature wear from these docks that would cause data loss.

"I have 3 of those they're great, like japamac says, just eject or drag them to the trash before powering down or swapping HDs. "
Have you had any issues with FireWire 800 "pass through". There are several feedbacks on Amazon saying these units will allow you to use either FireWire port by themselves, but when you attempt to connect another FireWire device into this unit the device will not be recognized / work. Not sure if this problem is related to hardware and/or firmware (OWC mentions a future firmware download to allow 3TB drives to be used in it).
The first feedback; for example, states:
    {quote}However am disappointed that attaching other FW800 devices doesn't seem to work using the second FW800 port when connected to a Mac.{quote}
I am adding 800 ports to my Macs via a pci card, but I guess I could always use the native 400 ports.

  • Voyager Q SATA dock isn't allowing booting up via firewire

For my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, I have just purchased the Newertech Voyager Q SATA dock with firewire 400, 800, esata and USB 3.0
The only problem is, while it's advertised that you can boot from external drives using this, on my MacBook Pro, I am completely unable to boot via firewire 400 or 800.
This is definitely one of the newest models, as it doesn't look like the quad interface models friends of mine have had for years.
I am going to contact Newertech, but I thought I'd at least reach out to the Apple community here as well.
I've tried two different SATA drives just in case there was something about the first SATA drive I was using that was preventing booting up via firewire, but no luck.
The really interesting thing is I CAN boot up via USB, but since my MacBook Pro only has USB 2.0, it's definitely a lot slower than firewire 800 and not nearly as desirable.
I can access any drives while the computer is booted up from my internal drive's OS. They mount on the desktop via firewire just fine.
But when I boot up and hold the option key so I can choose what drive to boot up from, the external drive in the SATA dock doesn't show up AT ALL via firewire.
It only shows up when I stay on that screen (where you choose the boot drive after holidng option while powering up) and plug in the USB cable instead of firewire.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Yea, I was upset because this fact is NOT advertised on their website. I'm glad I can at least boot via USB, which will be fast on new machines with true USB 3.0 but slow on older machines with just 2.0.
But now I need to find the old model, which seems difficult. I really want to boot via FW 800. That's a huge reason why I bought this.

  • Upgrading hard drive and transferring OS and files

    Hi all
My MacBookPro needs a bigger HD. I've read many opinions on copying over data. Just curious which is the easiest? I have the laptop(with the old drive and files), empty FW external drive and new SATA HD. I also have a Wiebetech Sata dock. Will any of this make for less steps and less corrupted files?

  • Why is my SATA enclosure not working?

I have just fitted the hard drive from my Macbook Pro (which recently died after logic board issues) into a SATA USB enclosure to transfer all the data over to my brand new iMac.
After connecting the enclosure to the iMac, the red LED on the front of the enclosure is blinking and I can hear the hard drive working but my iMac doesn't seem to have found it. There is no external drive icon on the the desktop and nothing showing up in Disk Utilities.
The instructions state: Red light = HD is being accessed Green light = HDD is connected and hard disk is idle.
There is no green light showing at all.
As far as I'm aware, there is no problem with the hard drive itself.
The instructions also refer to Driver Installation but only for Windows computers, although I checked the enclosure was compatible with Macs before I bought it.
I've tried connecting it to my wife's PC laptop and a message appears saying something like unrecognisable/malfunctioning USB device.
Any clues? I'm literally going mad! I really need to get that stuff off that hard drive!

A couple of thoughts come to mind.
-A bad enclosure or improper HD installation.
-Insufficient power to run the drive on USB alone.
-HD actually has some problem you don't realize.
It is difficult to troubleshoot without alternative hardware. I use a powered SATA dock to test raw drives. Some enclosures allow applying external power.

  • SATA caddy?

I'm about to do some upgrades and putting a 500Gb HDD in my G5, but then I have to get a bigger external HDD to match, of course to boot from I'll need a FW drive but don't have the money to replace the one I have (I has an older IDE HDD so can't use SATA and I think IDE topped out at 400Gb)
What I was planning to do was buy a SATA cappy (if that's what it's called) the device that you can quickly put in any SATA drive like a big USB drive. The idea is I'm taking the 500Gb from another computer but need to transfer files off it to the new one it replaces.
My question is using CCC or Time Machine can I use a USB 2.0 connection (as the caddies only have USB) to do backups even if I can't boot to it, in the even of a failure I'd take the back up and slot it into the G5.
The only other option is to spend more money than I currently have for a new bootable FW case.
I'm planning on doing this soon as I have less than 10Gb left on the main HDD (250Gb)

ETA - they are called SATA docks (not caddy) and can be half the cost of most external cases.
But I've figured out how I'll do this.
First replace the HDD in the PC with the larger one.
Put that one in the G5 to replace a smaller 250Gb.
Use the LAN to transfer the files back to the PC, might be slower but also cheaper than getting a case I don't need.
Once done format the 500Gb now in the G5 and use CCC to make a new start up HDD.
Remove and safely store the 'old' 250Gb which was the start up HDD for the G5.
Put the 2nd HDD back in the G5.
This way I get 500Gb more storage in the PC, 250Gb more on the G5 and still can use the 400Gb external as a back up until I get up to that limit on the 500 now in the G5.
    Thanks for your time...

  • Time Machine using external HDD docking stattion

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro and a few internal HDD's lying around. I have found on the web some external SATA docking station for mounting internal drives using Firewire 800. I am wondering if Time Machine will recognize these the same as normal external drives and backup accordingly. Thanks.

No reason why that shouldn't work. TM knows when a drive is not available, and it will resume a backup once the drive is connected.

  • Hardrives in general enclosure v. external

I am looking to get (as I have said in other posts, sorry for ametuer posts) FCP and use it on my powerbook via FW800. Now my debate is between such external drives as Lacie 500 GB Model: 300794U (Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AZFYMO/sr=8-5/qid=1150765242/ref=pdbbs5/103-5283330-2171824?redirect=true&%5Fencoding=UTF8) OR a normal hardrive that I would put into an enclosure that I buy (cheaper method). I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for either, I have heard of some problems with the enclosure method due to drives/enclosures conflicting whereas with just a external hardrive you are ready to go…
Secondly, I was considering if I should get a large 500 gb or perhaps 2 X 250 gb hardrives and daisy chain them. How well would daisy chain work when editing files on those drives containing ProHDV footage? Would it run through smooth enough?
Thank you for any and all speculation/comments/ideas on or relating to,
    TM

    TM,
I haven't heard of any conflicts when using an enclosure as long as it has the right chipset (Oxford 911 or 922 I think). One of the easiest to work with is the WiebeTech Drive Dock: http://www.wiebetech.com/products/firewiredrivedock.php
You can use inexpensive ATA drives, easily swapping them out as needed. They also have SATA compatible models available.
One of the best things you can do when editing on a laptop is to use a PCMCIA Firewire card. The card will create a second Firewire bus on your Mac, helping to eliminate dropped frame errors and other problems when having a DV device and a Firewire drive connected at the same time. Here's a selection: http://www.wiebetech.com/products/cardbus.php

  • Future-proof format

Hi, I have about 20 highly valuable 1 hour mini DV tapes (unedited) that I'd like to back up in digital form. I'd like to keep the frame size, but want to keep file size down as much as reasonably possible as these are unedited back-ups are will accumulate size quickly. Can anyone suggest a good format that's likely to be future-safe, ideally it would enable chapter markers (quickly chucked in in FCP) and support Apple TV. Thanks in advance, Chris

The mini DV (DV25) format would be about the smallest file size format that you could store them in, (it using about 3.13MB/second.)
The only other format that would still maintain image quality at a lower data rate would be "PhotoJEG" at a data rate of 2-3 MB/second.
Both formats would still allow you to bring them into Final Cut Pro for editing, down the road.
I would just pickup some external storage, (very cheep now, about $80.00 for a Terabyte of storage for a raw internal drive) and capture your tapes to that for archival purposes. I always backup to two external drives just for security against drive failure. I use a Wiebetech firewire bridge to connect them to my Mac, but there are SATA docks that run about $40.00 that you can just plug-in raw SATA drive into, that connect via USB 2.
If your not going to need to bring these files into FCP at all, then you can use the iPhone encoder in compressor to encode these tapes, (once captured to your drive) to the iPhone file format, which is in h.264, which has a very clean image for preview purposes, but will not work in FCP anymore.

  • Six dead hard drives in a month.

So far the number is six in the last month. I am ready to go out and buy pens instead.
Can anyone shed any light on this, please? It feels as though I've hit a sinkhole - every time I try and spend time and money sorting it out I fall deeper into trouble.
I won't bore you with too much of the sorry tale of the first five drives. One was our G4 Mac Mini's internal drive and I guess that just went out of old age - but it did choose a bad moment to expire! Another was a partition on my internal hard drive and I've managed to format that one - luckily nothing indispensible was on it.
But the other four were really bad news. They include the old internal drive from my MacBook Pro (late 2006), my Time Machine backup drive, a 1.5gb Seagate drive which was almost full of all my iTunes music - podcasts, purchased music files etc. and a brand new solid state I was preparing to use inside my MacBook Pro. Each of these four drives was attached to my MacBook Pro by Firewire 800, Firewire 400, docking station attached to an OWC SATA Expresscard and USB. Is it possible my computer is letting out spikes of electricity over its external connections? I've had the logic board replaced which improved some other problems; but this one continues. I actually haven't anything left to plug into my Mac now. My network drives are the only things keeping me sane - because at least I know I have some of my stuff backed up on those. But some of the drives WERE my backups so I'm sure I've lost some things.
I need some urgent advice about the new OCZ Solid State Vertex Plus hard drive. (SATA II, 120gb) and what is happening at the moment.
I bought this with a view to moving the current hard drive over to replace the non-working Superdrive. I'm still waiting for a caddy I've ordered but decided today to copy over everything from my hard drive except my user folder and other non-essentials using my docking station attached to an OWC SATA Expresscard. This went remarkably quickly - just under a minute per gigabyte. I then tried to start up from the new drive (still in the SATA docking station). I boot in verbose mode and I noted that it got as far as loading Bluetooth and then refused to proceed any further with the startup. So I restarted from the internal drive and ran Disk Utility. On permissions repair I got loads of messages starting with ‘Open error 5: “input/output error”'. So I tried repairing the disk. The whole disk wouldn’t repair - an error message said something was missing. But I managed to get the volume to run the repair routine; but was told at the end that it couldn’t be repaired. I decided to partition the disk again. Now Disk Utility got so far and just stopped with the message: “Waiting for disks to reappear” on the progress bar.
It's still waiting, over an hour later. What should I do? Is there some way I can get the disk to 'reappear'? It can't be that invisible if System Report can see it! If I try and quit Disk Utility it tells me doing that could render the disk unuseable. It no longer appears on the desktop but in System Report there is no sign of ill health. Has this disk died with all the others or is there a way I can rescue the situation?

    On your drive:
Yes, I did realise you were offering advice by telling me a story of your own bad experience with a drive and I was merely being sympathetic while noting that I will never clone a drive again, as I hope my words indicated:
    frannbug wrote:
Nevertheless I will never again attempt to clone a drive if there's the remotest chance it might invalidate my warranty.
As for my drive being beyond redemption:
I recognise that too, but here we are talking about SIX drives, one after the other, all attached to the ports of a computer, within one month, when my two network drives attached to my Apple BaseStation are still going strong. I agree that when a drive goes, it goes, although I was once sent a replacement mains plug to try when an Iomega drive went before they replaced it.
However when that many drives go in one month, is it so very wrong to be asking questions just to make sure it is just a horrendous coincidence? I've often searched for answers on this forum and discovered something I didn't know before (like not cloning onto a new drive). I was hoping that out of the vast hordes of Mac users who read these forums there might have been a bunch of people who had suffered the same problem and found the cause for it. I really needed some guidance before proceeding so I was dismayed when there was no response - although I realise you only get about an hour on page one on such a popular site.
After such a string of disasters you begin to feel rather afraid of trying to sort the problem out for fear of seeing further problems arise. I've spent quite a lot of money on this and have just seen the whole thing get worse. That is surely the time to stop and check it's not something I'm doing or something wrong with the computer that's causing it all, rather than just continuing to shrug my shoulders and buy more and more drives.
That said, I'm very grateful to you for informing me of the dangers of cloning a drive. I'd never have worked that one out on my own, becasue it seems so illogical. I can't fathom how the drive knows it is being fed data which is a clone rather than data that is from a DVD install disk. To me that's like a cupboard collapsing because you've put a blue tea service in it rather than a green one. Please understand I'm not doubting what you say; I'm just curious to know what it is that is so damaging about a clone.

  • Mac won't mount external HDD since 10.8.4 update

    Hi All
I'm fairly new to Mac (3mths) so still finding my feet...hopefully someone is able to help me here!
    Hardware:
MBP 2.7Ghz running (now) Os 10.8.4
    WD HD5000D032-000 (the old drive)
3TB WD Red (the new drive)
Solutions tried to the problem (described in detail below):
    - restart Mac
    - restart eHDD
    - different USB and power cables for eHH
    - different Mac(mini)
    - removed eHDD from stock housing and used SATA docking station
    - bought new HDD and used with SATA docking station
Now to the detail of my problems:
I've had a WD 500GB external HDD for about 8yrs. Formatted FAT32. Used with PC/Win laptop no issues.
Switched to Mac and no issues at all. However after a recent trip to Japan I plugged in the HDD to back up all the photos and vids I'd taken (I took my Mac with me to download off the the various SD cards, etc), the HDD plugged in and booted fine as normal and file transfer was initiated. The folder was large (don't recall how much but a few GB at least). Everything seemed to be progressing fine so left both Mac and HDD plugged in and carried on watching tv. Noticed a few mins later that an error message had popped up saying disk could not be found (or something similar).
HDD was no longer visible. Therefore I unplugged and reconnected and.... nothing. I can see the HDD in Disk Utility but it's not mounted. Options to verify/repair disk are greyed out. At this point I tried using different cables and USB ports and still no improvement. I've also tried restarting both Mac and HDD.
A few hours of reading forum posts suggested the HDD housing may be the culprit as it was quite old and prone to failing. As I'd tried all else, I went out and bought a SATA docking station and removed the HDD from its stock housing. This yielded the same results - I can see the HDD clearly in Disk utility but can't mount or verify/repair.
I then tried plugging into mate's Macmini running and older Osx and this time, the verify/repair options are available. Tried them and result was disk could not be repaired by Disk Utility. I still couldn't mount the drive and access any files though.
I had been planning on setting up a NAS anyway so ordered a new 3TB eHDD (WD Red) which arrived yesterday. I plugged it in using the docking station ni order to format it to FAT32 so that I could at least download my data from my Mac (and then subsequently look to recover all the data from the old eHDD) but the option 'MS-DOS File System' isn't available in the drop down in Disk Utility/Erase.
All the steup guides on formatting HDDs using Mac suggest that I should have this option in order to format as FAT32. All I see are 3 types of  'MS-DOS (extended)' and 'exFAT'.
    The twist:
All this time I just assumed that it was the hardware acting up but the fact that the new HDD isn't recognised properly either made me wonder. I remember updating the OS to 10.8.4 whilst I was away in Japan and connected to wifi. I presumed that any update that was pushed down to me was good to go - could I be wrong??
I've also noticed that my wifi sometimes takes a while to connect / disconnects by itself and skype repeatedly drops calls. From more reading around, I see that these are some issues people have experienced since updating to 10.8.4.
So could my HDD issues be being caused by 10.8. 4 as well?!
I'm out of ideas so now wondering whether I should try and roll back the 10.8.4 update but I've not idea whether this is safe/easy to do, etc...
Any help would be VERY much appreciated!!
    Thanks in advance!

  • My Mac Mini is getting feedback from External HDD

I am running a external WD 2T Caviar through SATA docking station. I am getting serious HDD feedback throught my speakers. I am using a sheilded Monster Analog stereo cable and it cuts the noise down a little. I have noticed that when playing audio through HDMI to TV speakers there is no feedback. Ijust got this computer and came from a PC. So I am having to get another HDD to back up the info from old drive and the reformat it to apple freindly formating. If I got FW conecting HDD  Would FW800 still have the same feedback issues?

Just an update. Tried it and no such luck. I am still getting the same amount of feed back even with the computer and the HDD on seperate outlets. One of the options I am also looking at is since there is no feedback the HDMI is possible just getting a home theater reciever and running video and audio through the reciever. Hopefully that would get rid of the feedback. Again I don't get any feedback through the tv speakers if I run sound through that. So in theroy my afformentioned HT soultion should fix the problem. If anyone sees a flaw in my logic please feel free to speak up!

  • Time Capsule Died, Data Recovery Question

Hello, I have either the 1st or 2nd generation Time Capsule which just recently died.  Since this is my backup drive, I will need to get the data out of this.  The tech specs say its a serial-ATA server grade Hard Drive.   What kind of case do I need to remove the drive from the capsule and put it into a case so that I can successfully transfer data?
Would a 3.5 SATA case work?   Is it something else?   I've read about the repairs on these things, but am not interesting in soddering.
    Much help would be appreciated.

Just go into a big computer shop or order it from ebay.. you just need the usb to sata cable and a power supply.. they sell it in a box for about $10. You only need it in a case holder if you intend to keep it that way.
There are neat desk docking units you can buy where you drop the hard drive in the slot. A bit more than the bare cable.. easy peasy though.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-2-5-3-5-SATA-IDE-Dual-HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive-Dock-Do cking-Station-HUB-Reader-/170926246068?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item27cbff88b 4&_uhb=1
Just type usb sata dock or holder or cradle into ebay.. and about 20,000 options will leap up at you.
The drive in the TC is 3.5" standard sata. Don't take the server drive too seriously.. that is the one and only 500GB seagate in the original Gen1.
To fix the TC you do not need to solder in parts yourself.. there is a list of people who can help you.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repairers
    And kits available.. https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
The units are a drop in replacement.. but change the TC from AC powered to DC powered.
