Wifi connection intermittent with ipad... but fine with my other devices

wifi is working with my laptops, pc and smartphones. however, for some reason the two ipads would get intermittent connections and drop off very frequently. any ideas?

Others have posted similar reports on the forums. What kind of router do you have? What version of iOS is on your iPad? Did you always have these issues? When did they start?
I also have the connectivity problem between my Cisco WRVS4400N router and my iPad. My issues began immediately upon upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.
I've tried many (if not all) of the suggestions posted on the various threads in the forum. In the end I found exactly two router settings that made any difference.
1. Changing my router channel bandwidth from 20 mHz/40 mHz to 20 mHz caused a significant improvement in my iPad's network throughput. It nearly doubled as tested using the speedtest.net app available for download. +This did not, however have any effect on the connection drops.+
2. Changing my WPA2 key renewal interval from the default of 3600 seconds to 99999 seconds reduced the number of drop outs from "frequently" to 1 or 2 times a day. So it's not fixed, but reduced to the point of being tollerable instead of infuriating.
My opinion on the matter is that some part of the handshake that the WPA specification says must occur during a key renewal is failing. Since every other device I own works correcty--and even the iPad did prior to the upgrade, I assume this means that the problem lies on the iPad side, and not with my router. However short of putting my iPad and router into a faraday cage and analyzing the wireless traffic between them, I cannot confirm this.
The only suggestion I have had from apple support (and one you will see made frequently here) is to take my iPad to some unsecure wireless network and test it there. Which, of course, doesn't exercise the key renewal problem suggested above.
You should first contatct apple support and let them know you are having trouble. Have as much information as possible, and mention that others online are having similar issues.
Then, if they cannot help you, you can start with the suggestions here and in other threads.
Good luck.

This crap just happened to me this morning where I was sent 90% data plan threshold warningfrom AT&T (while sleeping at 7:09am) then 5 minutes later getting the Overage data plan warning from AT&T.  This is all while I'm asleep right next to my phone plugged into a (non-Apple) dock on my clock radio.
Android has a limiting feature, why can't the "smart" guys at Apple learn from this??

Content of folders in hotmail have disappeared on ipad but there on other devices, why?

    Pesto girl
Maybe you can tell us more to help us understand what is happening.
    What devices are working correctly?
What does the Hotmail website show?
    What changed on your iPad?
    etc

  • Internet terrible on rMBP but fine on all other devices.

This may be long but only because I want you guys to understand exactly what my situation is.
I have 7 devices at home that use WiFi:
    2x iPod Touch 5th Gens
    1x iPod Touch 4th Gen
    1x iPad 2
    1x HP laptop from 2007
    1x 15in rMBP
    1x 13in rMBP
EVERY device works perfectly fine other than those two rMBP's, they load web pages instantly, flash player works like a charm (on the HP laptop, since iOS doesn't do flash) and I have no complaints.
These two Macbook Pros however decide to be pissy little laptops, they don't load web pages fully, refuse to play any flash other than on YouTube which means websites like Hulu are dead to me and they sometimes refuse to load websites at all.
All this and they always seem to be at 4 bars on the WiFi icon at the top. Before you guys call out the hardware, keep in mind that the 15in rMBP went through a motherboard and airport card exchange at the apple store but to no avail. The 13in rMBP was bought only two days ago and has the exact same problems with the EXACT same websites.
I am taking them to the store again but I'm not expecting any miracles as this will be my fourth visit to the apple store for the same problem.
Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Webkit Nightly etc. I've tried them all and they behave the exact same way.
Before you blame the router, I will say again, all the devices on that list other than the rMBP's are flawless over WiFi.

Since you're going back to the Apple Store, test several web sites that you've used at home and see if there is any difference in speed. Then find out what their solutions would be.
As far as videos, I have the Adobe Flash Player (version 11.7.700.169) plug-in installed on my 15" rMBP. Hulu, YouTube and other video sites work great. No lag or decrease in speed. I'm also going through an Airport Extreme Base Station and my rMBP negotiates the connection on the 5GHz band. I don't know if that matters. You can check what band you're on by holding the Option key down and right clicking the WiFi icon in the Menu bar.
Another thought, when was the last time you recycled your DSL/Cable modem and router? It might be worth a shot to shutdown all your devices, unplug the power to the router then the modem. Wait a minute or two, power the modem up; then the router and turn on one of your rMBPs and test.

  • Why is the wifi working on my mac but not on my other devices?

The mac i have is connected to the wifi and is working just fine, but my other 5 devices are not working with the wifi network that i have with the AirPort and my TimeCapsule. they were working fine the other day and just stared to act up... i already reset the time machine but that didnt fix anything.

Describe the whole network.. how are the airport and tc linked. What mode are they running in?
I would reset the wireless to conform to SMB rules.. which are much more compatible with modern Apple equipment for some reason.. to say nothing of the rest of the world.
Make all names short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.. absolutely no apostrophe.. that apple corruption.
Fix and lock the wireless channels. I would set different name for 5ghz to keep everything honest. Stop voodoo auto settings.
    Use WPA2 Personal security only.
(SMB name should extend to TC itself ie its network name and the hard disk.. apple used a mixture of names but it should have no spaces.. short.. TC Disk is wrong.. TCDisk is fine. Apple often use spaces where they shouldn't).

I have a MacBook and it will not connect to the Internet. It connects to wifi, but then when I open Safari, the page does not load. I have tried forgetting the wifi network, deleting keychain passwords, and restarting the computer, but nothing has worked. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

What happens when you try to connect?
    Error messages?
Does the iPod see the network?
    Have you tried other networks?

What App are you using to log in, Safari?
You cannot access icloud.com from an ios device in a browser. They have individual apps (find my phone, mail, calendar) to access those services from an ios device.

You need OSX 10.7.2 or higher in order to access icloud.  The mobile me account is now defunct (it closed down more than a year ago).

I own a 13-inch MacBook Pro and for the past day, my wifi on my laptop says I only have two bars of connection and is running very slow, but all of my other devices such as my iPhone and iPad are connecting perfectly to the wifi. How can I fix this? I have tried to shut my laptop off and let it rest and I have also re-started my wifi router three different times. Someone please help me with this problem so I can begin to use my laptop again as I take it to school and use it for class.
    Thanks so much!

FCP, and all software on OSX, has a few different "preference" files (the extension is .plist), which store all your user settings. Each time you resize a window, change a setting, anything, this file is re-written. Kinda easy to see how they would become corrupt every now and then.
    -Close FCP
-Navigate to User>Library>Preferences and delete com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
-Navigate to User>Library>Preferences>Final Cut Pro User Data and delete Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
    -Empty your trash
Relaunch FCP and see if that worked.
Download FCP Rescue to make this process easier in the future. When you have FCP running really smooth, open FCP Rescue and create a backup of your preference files. If it starts acting wanky, just run FCP Rescue and Restore your backup preferences. Works really slick, and it's free.
EDIT: Or use the really simple explaination that X posted as I was typing.

  • Any wifi connection problems with new Macbook Pro 13" models?

I currently use a 15" Macbook Pro (about 3.5 years old) that has intermittent WiFi connection issues (intermittently loses signal). This seems to have been a very common problem with this laptop model. My kids, who use Macbooks, have no connection problems. In any case, I'd love to buy one of the new model 13-inch Macbook Pro's but hesitate because of my many issues with WiFi connectivity on my older Macbook Pro. Just wondering if anyone is experiencing connectivity problems with the new model?

I've never had Wifi connection problems with a Macbook and now with the 13" MacBook Pro I was flabergasted when I took my MacBook down the street to a coffee house with free WiFi. I went to connect to their WiFi and found my own WiFi connection listed. I thought this odd even though I was on the same block as my apartment, my apartment is six stories up. I connected to the Coffee Shop WiFi but it was really slow so I wondered if I could connect to my own home connection. I switched it over and lo-and behold I did connect! It was a good 300 feet away! I NEVER saw this with previously owned MacBooks including the black MacBook and the MacBook offered just before they moved the MacBook up to the Pro series.
So I'd say they have improved the WiFi nicely.

  • Can't connect to the internet in my home yet other devices can. I tried it in other Wifi places and it connects without a problem. My home Wifi is with Att uverse

Can't connect to the internet in my home yet other devices can. I tried it in other wifi places and it connects without a problem. My home wifi is with ATT Uverse. I cheched the IP address on my laptop and its different than on my Ipod although it on the same network.

Move off WEP to WPA or, preferably, to WPA2 (as recommended by Apple). WEP has been deprecated by the WiFi Alliance since 2004 as insecure (it can be cracked in seconds by any hacker).
Note that each device on a network has a unique IP address but if your address starts with 169 then you did not get a valid IP address assigned to you by your router. If restarting the router did not cure the problem then you should check for a firmware update for your router.

This subject has been talked/written about a lot, after Lion was introduced. A solution from Apple has not yet been published, everybody is waiting.
Try for instance https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3734081?start=15&tstart=0, but there are more discussion groups with the same subject: frequently lost WiFi-connections in newer Macs running Lion or up.

  • Since update of my MAC my Notes no longer appear on my Mac but are still available through iCloud on my iPhone and iPad. How do I get my MAC to sync with the other devices as e'thing else has synced on my MAC through iCloud.

Since update of my Mac Book Pro my previously drafted Notes no longer appear on my Mac but are still available through iCloud on my iPhone and iPad. How do I get my Mac to sync with the other devices as e'thing else has synced on my MAC through iCloud. Also since the update Notes no longer appear as a folder in "Mail" but are now a distinct programme-is there any way of returning Notes to the Mail programme?

Thanks, but I've been on the phone with AppleCare US (where I am and live) and AppleCare UK. They continue bouncing me back and forth without helping resolve the problem.
Perhaps someones knows how to further escalate the issue at Apple?

  • I bought an external hard drive for backups to use with Time Machine, but however when I try to connect it with the other windows laptop it doesn't work ? intact it doesn't work on any other device except my MAC ?

I bought an external hard drive for backups to use with Time Machine, but however when I try to connect it with the other windows laptop it doesn't work ? intact it doesn't work on any other device except my MAC ?

    Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs
