Wifi to my shops

I have an office and two separate metal buildings, the office has DSL and I want to share the connection with computers in the two other buildings. I plan on using a broadband wifi router in my office with an omni directional antenna on the roof, and a cantenna on each of the shops. Im not sure what kind of access point I need to put in the shop that will receive the wifi signal from the office and change it over to the wired network in the shop.
I cant seem to find any documentation about how or what kind of access point I need to bridge together.

Hi… If you have a single in your shop then you can directly go for a wireless adapter to connect to this wireless signals. You would not need the access point at all. If you have more than one computer which do not have wireless adapters then you can go for any wireless-g access point such as WAP54G. This access point can also be made to work as a Wireless Repeater or a wireless adapter (AP Client).

  • Multiple SSIDs with Multiple (split) VLANs & GW ---- for shopping mall

    Hi Experts,
I suppose to sell the shared infrastructure service. Now I'm holding a couple of 8500 (HA). With almost 450 APs.
I'm designing my actual WiFi service for this "Shopping Mall" to retails.
Each of retail shop should own his AP inside their own shop. The AP should ONLY broadcast his own SSID such "Starbucks-WIFI". Each shop sholud not be able to hook into the other shops network.
    Problem are
If I have 100-500 customers/retail shops. Can I achieve my goal with a ginven WLC8500?
How many SSID can be actived at once?
How many AP group can be configured and turned on at once?
What would be the actual topology which is the best practice for? --- IMO, shop broadcast their own SSID >> access switch dedicated VLAN >> VRF (64VRF max @ CAT4500) or dedicated GW at Firewall >> dedicated internet link.
I found some relevant post but it not explitict to my env. Wireless Max SSID on WLC and AP | Getting Started with Wireless ...

How many SSID can be actived at once?
Go to WLAN > Advanced > AP Groups.
All APs fall into the default-group.  Each AP can advertise a maximum of 16 SSIDs.  If you are smart, you can create a number of AP Groups and individual APs can be assigned to a specific AP Group.  One of the main selling point with AP Groups is the ability to assign specific SSIDs.  So if you create an AP Group called Starsbuck and in the AP Group you assign only the Starsbuck SSID and then assign only one AP then this AP will ONLY advertise the specified SSID.
Good news is the 8500 can support up to 6K AP Groups (read THIS).

  • Adding a second router with WIFI

Whats the best way to add a second router with WIFI for my shop do I need a switch or can I just plug into the back of my exsiting router.

Here is article in the Cisco Knowledge base for turning a router such as the e4200 into a access point.
To do this you would connect a ethernet cable between the two routers.

  • Unable to connect to WiFi on 10.6.8

I just moved to a new apartment and have thus far been unable to connect to the WiFi here.
After browsing these forms and Google and trying a good number of solutions that worked for others I'm left at a loss. I running a MacBook Pro 15" with OSX 10.6.8 SL and attempting to connect througn WiFi to a Netgear WPN824v3 with no success.
I am able to see the SSID in my Airport dropdown and it recognizes that it is secured with WPA however, when I enter the correct password it states: "Connection Failed" If I enter the wrong password it states: "Invalid Password"
I have tried restarting multiple times. I shutdown and rebooted manually,
    Rebooted the router,
    Deleted:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    Reset my NVRAM,
Changed the routers mode from 108Mb to G&B only as well as changing the channel to both 1 then 11, (its currently back on 108Mb mode and channel 6)
Installed all software updates as of 03/21/13.
I also tried repairing disk permissions.
I'm currently at a loss and can only connect through ethernet here at my apartment while my roommates (and my phone) can access through the wifi. (I have no issue connecting to other Wifi connections, coffee shops etc.) Any help you guys could provide would be awesome.
    Thanks in advance.
    Josh

Also, please note that I attempted connecting with a USB Wifi adapter (Alfa AWUS036h) and it works completly fine. This, and please correct me if im incorrect, narrows it down to an Airport issue.
Also, I forgot to mention that I attempted the "Assist Me" function as well but to no avail.

  • [solved] A2109A-F intermittent WiFi dropouts

    Hi all,
some days ago I bought the tablet and am going nuts over it soon.
With ICS as well as JB I experience the same problem that on 3 out of 4 WiFi's I have intermittent dropouts where first the indicator turns grey then vanishes and comes back on after some seconds. The interval is some 10 to 30 seconds depending on ??? the router ???. It doesn't affect e.g. youtube but regularly stops flash videos and randomly gives "server not available" messages during surfing. Since it also occurs during video streaming, I don't think it is "powermanagement" related, although I disabled as much as I could find.
Unfortunately the WiFi in the shop where I bought the tablet is one of the 25% that are working ok....
any hint / help much appreciated
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

ok, found the problem (at least at two if the location that are of my interest): although the chipset in my router and the tablet are from same manufacturer, they are incompatible if some "turbo mode" is enabled on the router. Probably the same at our office but I can't get into the adminpage

  • Parameters n95 for wifi connection?

hi ,please anyone had a kind heart to solve my problem, got a problem with the wifi connection, and i tried to many times, got always no gateway!! if anyone can help me pls!! i want a good suggestion for the parameters thanks in advance

    Hi,
    settings of WiFi are automatic. Device is searching for WLan and there are to possibilities;
1)wlan without authorisation code - this means, you don't need to know any access code, if signal is strong enough, device will connect with net and you can browsing.
2)wlan which needs authorisation code - connection is possible after giving a security code. If you don't know such a code, you can not go in.
Sometimes even if access is public, signal can too weak or too many ppl are using it in this same time for effective connection.
You should try to find wifi in some shopping center with cafe, restaurant, where are many open wifis, if you couldn't connect there, it would mean, that there is something wrong with your wifi module.
    Good luck

  • Shopping list to reminder via mail

my wife made a shopping list with notes on her iPhone 4, and sent it to me by e-mail. Is there a way that she could send it to me (iPhone 4S) directly to the reminder (every line as a task - so I could check every product that I bought)?

    No.

  • Any ideas for security and parental control software yet???

Just received two of the touchpads from the fire sale and gave them to my kids, both under 10.  I am very interested in limiting the sites that can be accessed through the browser, as well as a few other things.  Has anyone found a practical means of doing this?  I'd hate to give up on this and switch it over to Android, especially since there is only Gingerbread available.  But, I just don't know what else I can do about these.  Any ideas?
    Thanks!
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

Please take this post with a grain of salt. I don't claim to be a security and parental control software expert, but I have researched these solutions and have some personal experience with them. That being said, here's some ideas to get you started.
As speedtouch mentioned, OpenDNS is a fantastic solution for website filtering. They have a great set of filters that can be customized and are one of the easiest systems to set up. Simply install an updater app on one of your desktop computers (or directly on your router if it's supported), configure your router to use their DNS servers, and you're good to go. I personally use this system mysefl and it works really well. The only downside in my experience is that there is not a temporary override system (at least, not in the free version that I use). An example of when this might be handy: my wife goes clothes shopping and looking at new bras. Every once in a while, a perfectly legitimate site might get blocked (in this case, probably something I don't want my kid looking at but perfectly fine for my wife). The option to "temporarily override the block" or "temporarily allow" the site would be nice, but it doesn't exist.
Another FANTASTIC solution that I've used in the past is the Astaro Security Gateway. They have a free home version of their "Software Appliance" that goes above and beyond OpenDNS. I haven't used it in a while, but when I did it was able to not only filter web sites but also monitor Instant Messaging and other online activites. It's a bit more involved as you need your own hardware (I used an old computer with 2 network cards and stuck it in between my router and my broadband modem), but the results are pretty powerful.
The downside to all these solutions, however, is that they will only work when the TouchPad is on your network. If they connect to a neighbors network of if the go to a friends house, all of these systems will be moot because they are completely bypassed. The only way to monitor that content from ANY network would be to install an application on the device itself and to my knowledge, none exist.

  • How to restore data on new iphone without using the initial setup

I bought a new iphone 5s today but the guy in the shop skipped the initial setup to activate the sim meaning I didn't get to restore the data through iCloud from my old phone as the wifi in the shop wasn't working. I have now got home to a wifi connection and have signed into my iCloud account but how do I restore my data? Or how do I get back to the initial setup?

On your phone: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You can now restore your previous phone's backup to your new phone.

  • AirPort: "Could not find PPPoE": Other threads = No Answers

I searched though several threads from this forum (and other forums) and have yet to find the answer to my problem.
The AirPort on my MacBook Pro (still have Mac OS X 10.4.11) works on college campus, free WiFi at coffee shops and in hotels, but it does not work at my parents house or my brothers house. I put in the password and it searches for the PPPoE for a while and then comes back saying "Could not find PPPoE". I am limited in my computer knowledge so basic language is appreciated.
The router at my parents (the one I use most) is a:
    Wireless - G 2.4 GHz
    Broadband Router 802.11g
    with Speed Booster
    LINKSYS
The Mac Address or Base Station ID is correct in AirPort except for the very last letter. AirPort reads a 'D', but the router's sticker has on it that is should be a 'B'. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but since AirPort does it automatically I don't see how to go in and fix that anyways.
Any suggestions or ideas about what is going on?

PPPoE stands for "point-to-point protocol over ethernet". It's an approach to virtual private networking (VPN) that works like the old method of dialing up and ISP using a telephone. In this case, however, instead of physically dialing over a phone and using a modem, you're making the "phone call" (actually no different than any other Internet connection) over the already existing network. What you are doing is using the network connection to connect to another computer somewhere, and that computer is then making all the other subsequent Internet connections on your behalf (acting as a sort of middle man).
Most people don't use PPPoE except to make certain types of VPN connections. However, some Internet service providers actually require it (you have to connect to the Internet by logging in through their proxy server).
The error means that the PPPoE connection that you usually use isn't working for any number of reasons.
"Could not find PPPoE" sounds like you've configured to connect to a device that has that name -- perhaps at school. Your parents probably have a device by a different name that requires a password of some sort (public places can often be connected to automatically without any interaction from you).
Go to the airport menu and search for available networks. One should be your parents', choose that one from the list. If there's isn't listed, you need to select "Join other network..." from the menu. You will also need to specify what sort of encryption they use, and the passkey to log in. Once done, you should be good. I can't guess whether the ESSID you are reading is that of your parents, or of another access point.
You might also want to go into the Network Preferences and make sure that you have your PPPoE network disabled. This is the virtual private network (VPN) that is confusing you and you likely don't need it.

  • Buying new appliances has been a nightmare

I'm writing to bring your attention to the unfortunate  experience I had with multiple portions of your organization. I recently moved into my new condo after getting married, and my wife and I decided to upgrade our appliances to stainless steel.  It started as a rather exciting experience, comparing models, price shopping, learning what features we want / need, but it quickly turned into a nightmare. We decided to go with some whirlpool appliances, but unfortunately Best Buy didn't carry the dishwasher we wanted ( we found it at Home Depot ).  It was no big deal really, we still wanted to get our refrigerator and range from Best Buy because we had only had positive experiences in the past and the associate in the store assured us that installation and delivery were included. So, the day finally comes, we are going to pull the trigger on the appliances, but we notice that the range we wanted comes in two different colors ( black and silver )[ Whirlpool WFE540H0ES ].  We both decided the silver was a nicer / cleaner look.  After some investigation we realize that when you change the color it actually takes you to a different (more expensive) model range [ Whirlpool WFE715H0ES ].  I will admit they are very similar and the only real difference is the color of the top panel and the more expensive one has a warming drawer.  We didn't want a warming drawer, so we called to clarify that the range wasn't available in silver ( at the original listed price ) without a warming drawer.  This phone call didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped.  I will be the first to admit that listing the two models together isn't very far fetched given their similarities, but I don't appreciate being talked down to because I need clarification about something listed on the website. After we decided that we still wanted the range and refrigerator, I added them to my cart online, opted for extended protection on the fridge, and bought a new cable for the electric range.  Go to checkout and boom, stuck at checkout.  Try multiple times with multiple browsers, both signed in and not signed in.  For someone who deals with so much technology this seemed so odd to me.  I honestly was convinced that it was somehow my fault and that my computer was messed up, but my wife decided to call and order over the phone where we were told that is was a problem on your end, "the system was down" every phone call that my wife has had thus far the system has been down or working slowly. We scheduled the delivery for Monday July 6th, and we were told we would get a call the day before with some more info about the delivery.  We received a call but it didn't really have any more information about the delivery.  We called and asked for the "time window", 9:30 - 11:30am.  Monday rolls around and they miss the window and don't arrive until 11:40 ( no big deal, we're excited to get our new appliances, 10 minutes isn't bad ).  They start moving the refrigerator into the kitchen, but at the expense of my walls, newly painted I might add ( pictures attached ).  After finally getting it into the kitchen, the delivery men refuse to hook up the refrigerator or move the old refrigerator ( asked specifically about this, moving the old appliance to the garage was included ).  The waterline behind the refrigerator does not have its own shutoff valve, so my wife turned off the master water line, but still they won't unhook the old refrigerator.  After finally giving up and deciding that they aren't going to install the refrigerator, my wife gets pressured into signing the document without reading it.  Shortly after I arrive home from work, we both notice some large noticeable scratches on one of the doors.  I woke up early before work the next morning and installed the refrigerator myself, and we moved the old one out of my kitchen but not all the way to the garage ( I don't have a dolly ). After this poor experience my wife got on the phone and tried to get the door with scratches replaced.  This phone called seemed to go perfectly.  We were offered a $250 gift card or a replacement door for the refrigerator.  All we wanted was a shiny new fridge, so we asked for the door to be replaced.  She even helped us set up an appointment to get the old fridge moved to the garage.  Unfortunately, near the end of the call, she explained that the "system" was running slow and that she couldn't get us a replacement door.  She assured us that she made notes of what were to happen and emailed all the appropriate parties.  A day passes and we don't hear anything, so my wife calls again.  The first person answers the phone and decides to hang up on her. After waiting on hold twice, she gets through and asks about what steps need to be taken to get a new fridge door.  After acknowledging that we were to get a new refrigerator we were just deflected to whirlpool.  Given a phone # to call and get a new door directly from whirlpool, but we could have done that from the start.  Best Buy offered us a new door, I was expecting a new door, not a phone number to call to find the fridge door myself. This whole experience ( which still isn't over ) has been horribly stressful and frustrating.I've always loved Best Buy, I've always recommended it, and I really don't want to run into this experience ever again.  Picture can be found here - http://1drv.ms/1KQ87bM

    Hello aaboyd-
My wife and I shopped for a new washer and dryer about a year ago, and I share with you that same excitement of looking through models and anticipating the delivery of the appliances.  I’m truly sorry to hear that what started out with such promise ended up becoming a disappointing delivery experience with us.
Our basic delivery would normally include hook up to an existing waterline, assuming that a shut off valve was present at the waterline, so the delivery team would not have completed that work.  I’m glad to hear that you were able to do so after the fact, but our delivery team should have moved your fridge to the garage as part of your recycle/haulaway service.  Did they give any reason as to why they wouldn’t do this?
I’m sorry to hear that some damage was done to your paint and walls; I understand that our phone agents gave you the number to contact for Gallagher/Bassett; however, they will most likely instruct you to contact the delivery company directly to submit a claim, as they have insurance to cover these damages.  I would recommend having an estimate for the damage already available as this should save you some time.
From what I can see, it looks like we had a team back out to your home on 7/9, later in the afternoon.  Has everything been resolved at this point with moving the old fridge and replacing your new fridge or fridge door?  Please let me know if you still need assistance, in the meantime, I have fully documented this experience for our delivery team leadership so that they have the opportunity to review this with the third party delivery company.
    Thanks for posting!

  • Remote Login attempt

I followed the instructions on the following web site:
    http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.20/20.07/VNCOverSSH/index.html
That gave me the ability to do a remote login over my local network. However, if I attempt to login over the Internet, I get the following message:
Please configure Apple Remote Desktop to allow VNC Viewers to control the screen.
    Unknown authType 30,35
There is no Apple Remote Desktop in Systems Preferences on my computer that I know of. In the Sharing Pane of Systems Preferences, there is an item named Remote Management with a “Computer Settings” button that has a checkbox item “VNC viewers may control screen with password.” Checking this item doesn’t appear to correct the problem.
Both remote and local Macs are running OS 10.5.6. Any ideas?

if I select Remote Login - SSH (which is what I think I need), the default port is shown as 22. Changing the 22 to 5900 is what made it possible to do remote control over the Internet. But, does that mean I no longer have an SSH tunnel for security? I was under the impression that Port 22 is the port used for SSH.
ssh by default connects via port 22. VNC by default connects via port 5900.
ssh will provide a secure encrypted connection. VNC will send everything INCLUDING the password in clear text across the internet where anyone can steal it!
So, yes, if you forward port 5900 to your Mac and have your VNC client connect directly to port 5900, then you can skip the ssh part. But just so you are aware that everything you do over that connection can be observed, and the password can be stolen. Which means someone could then connnect to your Mac via the stolen VNC password and do whatever they wanted.
The odds of someone stealing your VNC password, are in direct proportion to where you make your connection. If for example you make it from your own property where only you are allowed to use your ISP connection, then it is unlikely as long as you have a good WiFI encryption (WPA), or similar location where you know the network setup is secure.
If you are going to be doing this from a public WiFi location; coffee shop, hotel, etc... then anyone could sniff your network traffic and steal that unencrypted VNC password along with your connection information.
Here is what I do. I have a high numbered port on my Airport Extreme base station forwarded to my Mac's port 22. I then make an ssh connection to my home and establish a VNC tunnel
    ssh -p 23456 -L 5909:localhost:5900 [email protected]
It then make a VNC connection to
    localhost:5909
This tells my VNC client that the local end of the ssh tunnel port 5909 is what I want it to connect with. The ssh tunnel will then encrypt all traffic to my home over the established tunnel and deliver that traffic to my home Mac's port 5900 where my home Mac's VNC server is listening.
ssh has encrypted everything, including the password exchange.
As an added bonus, I can establsh ssh keys which allow me to skip the password and instead exchange very long *ssh keys* which is even more secure.
The use of the high numbered port cuts down on attempted breakins to know ports. It is mostly noise, but it is noise I do not need to subject my Airport Extreme and my Mac's TCP/IP stack to.

  • SBG900 and Touch?

Ok so I've had it with my WCG200 and I'm about to purchase a new wireless gateway. Can anyone vouch for the Motorola SBG900 working flawlessly with their Touch?
The Touch is bringing my WCG200 network down only revived by a hard reset on the WCG200.

Well,.... if you look up the WCG200 and SBG900 they both offer what you say Touch requires.
It doesn't seem to be a problem as far as specs go, just some other dark, unknown area of incompatibility that seems to be with the Linksys WCG200. I haven't met a fellow WCG200 that could get his Touch to stay connected reliably. I went to a wifi-enabled coffee shop with my Touch and I managed to take their whole network down just by doing some simple browsing. I had only to assume they were using a WCG200 as well.
It is noted though that Linksys supports Windows exclusively.
