WiFi without internet

This seems like the most relevent forum for this...
I have a wireless home network but no home internet access. I use my iPad 3g almost exclusively. I do drag my MacBook to the coffee shop or library now and the  to keep it updated.
Everything works fine with my wireless printer and syncing to iTunes etc. But a lot of time is wasted turning wifi off so the iPad switches to 3g, or when syncing iTunes sees the wifi and wastes large amounts of time waiting for an internet connection.
Is there a way to have a home wireless network over wifi and convince my devices to not look for net access? Is there something I can do to my router so the devices see the wifi but the router sends a "no net access here, move along" signal?
Thanks for any insight.

Marked as new idea and edited the title slightly to make it easier to find via search. ;)
Although I'm not sure this is technically possible.

  • Getting Data from 3G network while connected to Wifi without internet?

I have a Wifi network at home solely to play music wirelessly. There is no internet connection on this network. I want to be able to connect my iphone 4 to this network BUT get all data and surf done on the Iphone over the 3G net. This so I can use Wireless mouse and such applications on the phone and at the same time surf... It seems that when connected to my Wifi net the Iphone also trys to connect to internet through it and thus fails to fins a connection. Is there any settings to tell it to primarily search internet through 3G? And still stay connected to the "dead" Wifi network?

There is no setting on the iPhone to do what you want & since, by design, the iPhone will look for a data connection using the following priority: WiFi>3G>Edge>GPRS, I no of no way to accomplish what you want.

  • Iwork documents loading too slow local wifi without internet

Our school has a few ssid for local wifi and I am using my ipad for mirroring with apple tv and my ssid has no internet connection. When I try to open any iwork document it is loading too slow. If I turn off wifi or if I connect internet, it is faster.

It is perfectly normal on wifi networks that have smart content filtering. School network, while not slow by itself, has special filtering programs that check your downloads for specific words, sites, images and slow down your connection by doing that.

  • Is there a way to display movies purchased from itunes from my ipad to my apple TV without internet (still using wifi)

I am going on vacation and will have a wifi network, but no internet access. I have tried to display downloaded movies from my ipad purchased on itunes to my apple TV, but get "Unknown Error -3". I can use mirroring, but not show the video. I am signed into the same account on both devices and the movie is downloaded to the ipad. The only issue I can think of is some DRM check, but I am not sure.
Has anyone been able to do this? It would be nice to be able to use my purchased movies on vacation without needing internet.
    thanks for any help

Will the lightning to HDMI dongle work?

This was a big advantage of AppleTV1 - generally it did not need internet authorisation for synced material on its internal drive and was great for holiday/vacation.
I tend to use a Mac Mini these days when going away.

  • I would like to use my iPhone 6's wifi hotspot to provide Internet at home (I do not have home internet) via a Time Capsule which I currently use the TC simply as a home wifi network without Internet to enable things like printing wirelessly and back

I would like to use my iPhone 6's wifi hotspot to provide Internet at home (I do not have home internet) via a Time Capsule which I currently use the TC simply as a home wifi network without Internet to enable things like printing wirelessly and backing up data wirelessly via time machine.
I have a Mac Pro, iPhone 6, iPad, Apple TV and Time Capsule. No home Internet.
Is is possible to have my iPhone 6's wifi hotspot used to provide Internet to my wifi network on time capsule? Has anyone else had success doing this? I'm not a tech head and really know very little about things like this. Thanks. Jen

You can have a go using a wireless bridge.. eg the airport express will do this.. you can join it to the iphone wireless running as a hotspot.. and then plugged into the TC wan port.. the TC has to be setup in router mode.. so this is going to give you double NAT errors.. and of course errors for all the time the hotspot is turned off.. but it can work. However you might find it requires you to manually connect up each time.. If you are really going to try and do this you will manage it.. but how fiddly it becomes might put you off after a week.
You will chew up your 5GB very fast using any streaming media even radio. So be very careful to track the usage.
Apple should have built in the TC the ability to plug in a wireless 3G modem.. via the USB but Apple have ceased to do adventurous stuff.
If you give up the TC as main router there are plenty of better products on the market that will handle multiple wan connections.. !!

  • Create local wifi network on OS X without internet connection

    Hi,
is there anyway to create a local wifi network without internet connection to play multiplayer games like call of duty on macbook pro ?

Is it safe to assume that you are connecting your MBP to a wireless router already?
If you are then all the other LAN machines should also connect to that same router even if internet access is turned off.
LAN parties are fun and they require the computers to have certain port setups for certain games.
It is possible, though I don't play COD (I'm a Battlefield man) and I can't help with the details of COD.
When my son has his friends over we  use a wired hub setup and we  make the laptop guys use the wired connection - it's  more stable. I admit that we always use the internet. The last LAN party we had without the internet was a Battlefield 1942 setup with one computer hosting the local server (and that was years ago.)

  • Can I use wifi for internet, while ethernet only for local network?

Hello everyone.  We have two internet connections at our office.  One is wifi only -- but fastest uploads.  The other is connected to our ethernet network (and very slow).  Really, it's not much a network -- just iMacs connected to a switcher.  When transferring files between iMacs, obviously we want to remain connected to ethernet.  But when uploading and downloading files, the wifi option is quickest (long story why -- our offices next door, can't run a physical line yet, yadda yadda).
So we find ourselves constantly switching between the two in network preferences.  Not only is this a pain, but it doesn't allow us to upload or download directly to a drive on the network.
Is there a way to tell the preferences to use wifi for internet, and ethernet for the local network (without internet)?
(We have updated mountain lion on i7 imacs, and most recent airport extreme)
    Thanks!

Your downstairs router can be installed anywhere in your home, but telephone companies or ISPs are only obligated to install their equipment just barely inside its service entrance. Usually, that location is the worst possible one for a home network, since it's in a basement or some remote corner, far from all the devices that use it.
Your idea to install an Ethernet cable to extend its reach to a more suitable location is an excellent one and will be worth the effort or expense. If you don't want to do it yourself a qualified electrician can perform the work quickly and elegantly, and you may find the cost surprisingly affordable. Ask your friends and neighbors to recommend a reputable electrician and get a written estimate.

  • HT2208 Can movie on iPad play on Apple TV/tv without Internet, just AirPlay?

I want to play the 100 movies on a tv, in a boat, at sea without Internet? I would use an iPad or MacBook Pro using airplay. Is a router required for AirPlay, even if there is no wifi Internet?
    Thank you

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If the movies are purchased movies, you may find that they need to check home before you can play them, although they don't actually need an internet connection to stream from the computer to the Apple TV.

  • Can I use airplay(reflector) without internet connection ?

Can I use airplay(reflector) without internet connection ?

I don't see why you couldn't use AirPlay as a stand alone thing. Obviously you'll need wifi, but as for Internet I really don't know. Again, Internet shouldn't have any say but it might.
Test it out, unplug the cable to your modem. If it's a modem/wifi router then unplug the DSL cable or cable internet cable.

  • Arch without Internet

I am rehashing an interest in Linux,  I've been goofing off with it since 1991.  Including installing many distros Slackware 0.94 being my first ever distro off of 3.5 diskettes.  I have been working with Crux for the last two months, but I'm tired of watching my Thinkpad T30 compile and compile and compile.  So now I've become intrigued with Arch and their precompiled binaries.  This is merely an exercise and toy for me to enjoy and learn from.
Here's my problem, I don't have internet at home.  I have free use of it at work.  So I've been carring tarballs home to compile.  Then realizing I missed a dependency and having to bring them home the next day.  I can't continue doing this as the frustration is certainly going to kill my wife.
    Finally here comes the question
Is there an Arch install disk with Xorg and a basic desktop so I can at least get that far?
Is there a repository I can burn to a CD with the most common apps and their dependents?
Is there any other way to install and maintain Arch without internet? (redundent I know)
Am I going to be forced to go to the library to access a network point just to get a base (not core) system up and running?  Things I want to install are Abiword, Xine, XMMS, burn some CD's, and maybe later play some small games.
    Thanks

You could eg install faunos to disc.
Edit: A better solution would probably be to make a mirror of the arch mirrors on a external hd, and sync that on work from time to time.

  • HT1349 how wifi without sim?

Tell me, who know how wifi without sim? is can work? why only wifi with SIM ?

iPhone Wi-Fi works perfect without SIM Card. With iPhone working perfect, remove SIM Card if you like, or just go Settings>Airplane Mode>ON, this will block SIM Card.
To turn Wi-Fi on Settings>Wi-Fi>ON, very easy. No SIM Card is needed. You can even make perfect internet phone calls with just Wi-Fi.

  • Time capsule 2 wireless networks one without internet

    Hi
i have a airport extreme and time capsule setup via ethernet to extend the network in the lounge room - i have setup a wireless network which has full internet access
my question is >> , does anyone know how to setup a second wireless network (without internet access - so it can be used for watching movies from a my cloud hdd via the my cloud app - ) so basically a second wifi network with only wifi -no internet ?
    Is this possible ?
    thanks

Yes, it is possible.. but you will need another wireless router to do it.
Setup the wireless router as a Static IP device running DHCP and running a different wireless name to the apple routers. You will need to swap your device that is watching the video from the airport network to the new network to watch the movie.
This could be done better with a more sophisticated router.. Apple provide no functionality beyond the most basic but lots of routers that allow you to run secondary IP and vlan will allow this without needing multiple networks.. For now though it is easier to just get a cheap wireless router.
Even an Apple router can do what you want.. just set it up as router without a WAN connection.. something like a Gen5 AE would work well and fairly cheap.

  • Wifi without dataplan

hello, i was using wifi without data plan. But now the problem is, it connects to wife but internet is not working. WIFI icon does not change to color, any suggestion? Also in browser there is only hotspot browser, no other options available.

Without a blackberry data plan, this won't work.  Give your carrier a call to get this added to your account.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
