Wikis, Blogs, etc. Available to Outside Users?

So my wiki works on the server itself in Safari, but everytime I try and access the same address on another machine, it can't find the server and fails to load anything.
Obviously, this is a setting problem. How do I make wikis, blogs, etc. visible to people on the web and not just on my network? I am thinking I have to set up some nameservers on Leopard Server and populate those nameservers into my domain registrars control panel? I do have my server name bought as a domain name, of course.
Any help would be great, and pleaes note I am a beginner at server admin.

So my wiki works on the server itself in Safari, but everytime I try and access the same address on another machine, it can't find the server and fails to load anything.
Access? How? Via ip address? Via host name? From your LAN? From outside your LAN? If you're accessing from one host to another via a private static IP address (servers really want static IP) on a private LAN and the access is failing, then there's a network disconnect, firewall, subnet error or routing problem of some sort.
Obviously, this is a setting problem. How do I make wikis, blogs, etc. visible to people on the web and not just on my network?
Is your network addressing in the range 192.168.0.0, 172.16.0.0/12 or 10.0.0.0/8? In one of the private address ranges? If so, you'll need to use NAT to get from the public IP address space into your private address space.
I am thinking I have to set up some nameservers on Leopard Server and populate those nameservers into my domain registrars control panel?
The nameserver is the first thing that should be set up in Leopard Server. A number of other services are dependent on having functional DNS, either on the Leopard Server or on another box on the network serving DNS.
Recognize there is public DNS where you have your "domain registrar control panel", and there is a second DNS that may be configured on the private local LAN; what's called split horizon DNS or split view DNS such. Basically DNS mappings for the private IP addresses (I'm assuming you're using a private network), and DNS that is public and visible to the Internet.
I do have my server name bought as a domain name, of course.
Which is the first step, and how a public static IP address is available and how a public host name gets to your server. The next step is configuring the firewall - I recommend an external firewall, with NAT capabilities if you don't have enough static addresses - and the associated port-mapping and NAT. A pro-sumer grade firewall will have these capabilities, as can something akin to M0n0wall or Smoothwall.
Any help would be great, and pleaes note I am a beginner at server admin.
This is a big topic area and while Leopard Server is pretty good, it's not a "No IT" solution. It's about as close as I've encountered, but there is still a ways to go; some regular care and feeding of the servers is needed.
It really helps to know something of IP networking, including a little bit of DNS and NAT and security, and related. Start with some of the Leopard documentation or a book on Leopard Server or classes on networking and related; however you learn best.
The following is a deliberate attempt to scare you: An insecure server will get hacked. My servers get attacked frequently; the botnets find and pound on these servers, and are launching increasingly sophisticated site attacks. Recognize that *your server will get attacked.* This means staying current on your software versions, and keeping current archives of your critical data (via Time Machine or cron or launchd or some other automated means), and restoring and verifying those archives once in a while as a test. Reading or otherwise scanning the attack and web server logs, too.
Here's some [reading|http://64.223.189.234/node/275] that seeks to introduce firewalls and networking; I will probably end up creating an article or document specific to this topic on Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server. The Apple manuals are pretty good at introducing the area, though you'll often then find yourself reading more detailed documentation from other sources as you get deeper into each of the areas of Mac OS X Server and of Unix in general; Cricket Liu's DNS and BIND book, for instance. You will want to start reading the server manuals. (Or you could choose to out-source server administration and/or server setup, of course.)

  • 10.5.7 update Wiki, blog, and Calendar stopped working

I'm running 10.5.7 server and like a noob, I updated without giving others a chance to figure out what problems might arise from this monster. My server is a live machine and unfortunately I sorta need this working ASAP.
Now that I've updated, none of my web services work. The basic site works, but the wiki/blog thing says there's no available groups. In workgroup manager, when I select a group (Library in this case), I want to be able to enable wiki and blog and Web Calendar. They're grey because now the "Enable the following services for this group on: (None)" is selected. When I click on the 'None' button there's no option to choose my community site.
In Server Admin, when I select "Web", then select my site. Then click, Web Services... Wiki and blog is checked. Also, the access list is blank, as it's always been...
Here's a look at the most recent error in my /Library/Logs/wikid/error.log before today, I'd never seen anything like it...

*edit* One more thing. When I select a user in WGM and click 'Advanced', then enable calendaring, I can't select a calendar host. There's no items in the list like there was before. It hyst says 'No Calendar Host Selected'. Again, this is enabled in the web services in Server Admin. Help!

    Server Admin -> web
select the website in question, make sure it is checked as enabled
Server Admin -> web -> Web Services
make sure the users/groups that require access are displayed, otherwise click and add them
    Check Wiki and Blog
    etc...
    save
    Workgroup Manager -> Groups Icon
    Select the correct group
Select the website that you want (www.your_domain.com) from the popup menu where it says : Enable the following service...
    Check Wiki and Blog
    etc...
    save
    Server Admin -> web
    Stop
    Start
    That should do it...
If you try to access the wiki on localhost it won't work, you need to go to the actual domain
    http://www.your_domain.com
on an intranet if you are using private dns you can create a test website for example
    DNS -> your-server-name.mac.private. -> 192.168.1.150
and you select the correct private site, you can
http://your-server-name.mac.private and you should see it fine
    Best of luck...

  • Wiki blog best practice for teachers

I am running Web services on a 10.5.8 server with wiki, blog, and calendar features enabled for a particular group.
What is the best practice for allowing a teacher to post assignments, media, etc., to his/her page while also allowing students to submit assignments (in video form) up on that page - BUT not allow them to edit the part the teacher has entered? It sounds like it should be a blog “comment”, but that does not allow them to upload files. I see there is the capability to “allow some group” members to write to this page – but how do I select which users (does not take me to a user selection option) - not sure that this is indeed what I am looking for anyway. If I allow all members to edit the page (wiki), there is little control for the page owner (teacher) to reduce student error, sabotage, or intentional goofiness.
    Thanks for any advice.

  • Changing group owner disables wiki/blog

For quite some time now the procedure for creating new groups with a single owner/moderator has worked well. I 1) go in to the directory app on the server, 2)create the group, 3) change the owner to the teacher who will manage the wiki/blog, 4) add the teacher to the list of users allowed to create wikis (in web services). Then everything works like a charm. As of a few weeks ago (and I have not run any updates--still on 10.5.6, etc.), as soon as I change the group owner from Directory Administrator the wiki/blog generates a no group with that name is hosted on this server. Changing the owner back to directory admin fixes this but I need the teachers to be owner/moderators. Any suggestions on what might be causing this problem?
    Thanks,

Is there any solution to this problem? I am trying to set up the group owner but can't. I am set as the group owner in the group list and set as moderator in the list of users allowed to create wikis but when I go into the wiki site I am unable to change settings.

  • Can Wiki blogs be shared ? (Server v4)

    Hello all,
I am trying to set up a Wiki blog, so that all logged-in users can leave their comments like in a newspaper's comment section.
Of course, it should be clear who left a comment and when.
The blog should read like that:
    User 1 on Friday 2 Jan 2015 wrote :
    User 2 on Friday 2 Jan 2015 wrote :
How do I do that ? The comment function does not embed the comments into the blog.
    Thanks for helping.

You can't modify the way it works. Like everything else in OS X Server, it's designed for simplicity, not flexibility. You would need a third-party solution. I don't have a specific recommendation.

  • Wiki/Blog Permissions

I have the advanced setup of OS X Server and I was wondering if there was a way to easily change whether users are allowed to have blogs. I used to have it setup on Basic but I found out that it does not support portable home directories so I switched. I used to use the Server Preferences. I also tried to use WGM to not allow a group to have a blog and assign that user to only that group but the user could still create a blog.
I also would like to know if there is a way to delete a blog that a user has created.

I think what you're looking for is under:
    Server Admin.
Select the server itself in the left hand column (not an individual service such as Web).
You should see: Overview - Logs - Graphs - Server Updates - Certificates - Settings.
    You want the "Settings" tab.
Under the "Access" tab you find there, select the blog service and enable only those users you want to have a blog to use the service.
I find the management of the wiki/blog system a bit of a nightmare as controls are scattered all over the place.
    Hope that helps.

  • WIKI/BLOG server security

Trying to set up a WIKI/BLOG server and want to allow groups to access only certain WIKIs. (e.g. leadership group is only group that can see leadership WIKI, etc.)
I've dug around and can't find how to do it. Is there a way to do this? And if so, how?
They are connecting to just the IP address for now (later to be a DNS name) via the browser. Connections are working, but anyone can see any group.

    Hi,
In your group setup with Workgroup Manager (basic group panel) you select who can view and who can edit/create entries on the group's web site with the drop down selection menu in the middle of the page. Anyone will be able to see the list of groups hosted on your server if you use the dynamically created index page (the black background page). But if you select only group members to view the group wiki/blog, then an individual must log in and be a member of the group in order to see any of its pages. That includes any group service offered on the group web site.
By using the Directory.app you can enter more fine grained permissions for the group web site when you pull up the group entry and select who can view and edit/create by specific member within the group.

I've downloaded IWork. it's available under my user name but not the other users on the same computer. how do i make it available to them as well?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Did the iWork '09 folder get installed in HD > Applications or in HD > Users > (your account) > Applications? For the iWork applications to be available to all users they must be installed in the main Applications folder. I think if you were not logged in as an administrator for the installation they would only be installed in your Applications folder. You will need to reinstall while logged in as an administrator to have the applications installed where they will be available for all users.

  • Restrict access to buttons, regions, etc. on a per user basis?

My application restricts access to buttons, regions, etc. on a per user basis.
    Here is my application logic...
    1. A User can only edit items they own.
    2. A Super-User can edit all items
So, when a user logs in, I use a post-authentication process to set the user ID to an application level item.
Now, for example, to have an edit button display on a page, I need to check the item's owner ID against the application level user ID...and check to see if this user is on the Super User list via a query.(which could be set to another application level item upon login...I guess)
Question...What is the best way to do this? Conditional display? Authorization scheme?
Would something like the following work for a Conditional Display?
    Condition: SQL Expression
&USER_ID.=&P6_ITEM_OWNER_ID. OR USER_ID in (select USER_ID from table where USER_ID=&USER_ID.)
How would I do this with an Authorization Scheme? (I like the idea of updating the logic in single location...but I'm not sure if it is possible because I have to check PX_OWNER_ID would be different on each page.)

  • Error - Some objects are not available to your user profile...

    Hello,
It is for BI 4.1 on Windows. We have a connection called CON1 pointing to DB1. It uses UNIV1 All reports were working fine and we were able to refresh it as well.
Now the CON1 is changed to point to DB2 and we are now getting following error - "Some objects are not available to your user profile. You cannot refresh this Query. See your Business Objects administrator to request rights".
If I create a new report using CON1 and the it works fine. Only the old reports are still causing issue on refresh. I tried with Admin account as well and same issue.
The CON1 is still CON1 and universe UNIV1 is still using CON1. Just the content was edited from DB1 to DB2 in CON1. If we create a new report then no issue.
Can anybody advice if something needs to compiled. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    SS

Your old reports are still pointing to same connection. Remember the DSN has been pointed to use another Database. The records and entries will be different. In addition as the records or object mapping have changed for these reports. Hence this would be a very normal behaviour.
Create a new connection named CON2 or something like that to point DB1 as per your requirement. This way your original reports would work.
