Will changing Network name affect Time-capsule back up function

I finally managed to set up my time capsule with Mac support help. I didn't realize until this morning that I didn't want my network name to be my full name. I think I can change the network name easily enough through the airport function. But will this screw up my Time Capsule's attempts to update my files? Do I need to go into Time Capsule and change the network somewhere, or is the program intuative and will do it automatically?

Welcome to the discussions!
Changing the network name will not affect your backups.
You might want to reconfirm the setup for your backups as follows:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Time Machine
Click Select Disk
Click your Time Capsule disk to highlight it
Click Use for Backups

  • Changing account name affects Time Machine?

    Hi,
I would like to change the account name of the main user (it currently has the generic name "admin") according to Apple's instructions.
I was wondering though if and how this will affect Time Machine. The full name (editable via the user & login system prefs) will remain the same, as well as the computer name in the Sharing prefs.
Will TM create a new backup folder instead of continuing the existing backup?
    Thanks

If you change the short user name (home folder name), Time Machine will back it up in full, and prior backups of it won't appear as they used to.  But you can still see them, per the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15A.

  • Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

  • If I add time capsule to my existing network will I be using the time capsules dualband network?

I already have a wireless network, and I want to be able to use time capsule for backups and it's dualband network. Would I be able to just add to existing network to get both of those features or would I have to create a whole new wireless network. Just to clarify on the setup, would I plug the time capsule into my router that's connected to the modem?
Sorry I'm very new at this.
    Thank you,
    Ferg

The Time Capsule is a router / hard drive only. It does not have a built in modem.
If your current "router" is really a gateway (combination modem / router on the same chassis), you will need to plug the Time Capsule into one of the ethernet ports on your "router" and configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network".
It's very important that you configure the Time Capsule in "Bridge Mode", if you connect it to your current router.
If on the other hand, you have a separate modem now and your router is connected to the modem, you could simply replace the old router with the Time Capsule.
Post back if you need more info.

  • Will time capsule back up Sooloos Store Ones?

I have a Sooloos system with two Store One devices holding almost two terabytes of music. Can the Time Capsule back up Sooloos?  I assume through iTunes?  If so what about auto backup?

Time Capsule can do NOTHING..... it is a dumb hard disk inside a pretty much standard Airport Extreme Router.
It is a target for Time Machine.. all the smarts are in the computer and TM which does the backup.
BUT TM cannot backup network drives.
So neither TC or TM can do anything.. in and of themselves.
I have no idea what a Sooloos is but if it can backup itself to SMB or AFP target network disk, then it can work.. otherwise no.
Edit.. I did read up this basic review
    http://www.meridian-audio.com/sooloos/pdfs/sound-vision.pdf
But I still don't know the networking abilities of the unit.
iTunes will not be able to backup a network drive either.. only if it is locally stored on the computer, then TM can back it up locally.. or perhaps you can get itunes to cloud store the material.. but 2TB is an awful lot to do that with.

  • Will a time capsule back up Mp3s for iPad access?

A family with 1 pc and 4 ipads and iphones.
(one day soon will be an all around apple family)
iCloud has been great with backing up items bought from iTunes.
My problem is, I have old LPs that I have converted to mp3s, so I have not yet been able to "cut my cord".
I am hoping a time Capsule will solve my problem.
    Qs
1.Will the time capsule back up mp3s from my pc and allow access to my iPad wirelessly?
    2. Has iCloud made any changes to the time capsule?
(As far as new features or restrictions as far a backing up my devices.

THanks for reply. So what if my mp3s are in my itunes library.

  • Will time capsule back up an external hard drive

Will time capsule back up an external hard drive?

Time Machine will backup the drive to the Time Capsule if it is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and it is connected directly to your Mac by USB or FireWire....and it is not "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Options.

  • I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Changed IP address on Time Capsule now can't back up

I have a time capsule 2GB model. I was using the time capsule only for backup as I had a router. The router I was using has gone bad so I decided to use the time capsule as a router also.
I set up the router portion of the time capsule as 192.168.xxx.1. It was 192.168.xxx.111. It works fine as a router. Now my MacBook Pro can not backup to the time capsule.
I would guess that the change in IP address is confusing the MacBook Pro as to where the backups go.
Should I change the IP address for the time capsule back to 192.168.xxx.111?
Is there a way to tell the MccBook Pro about the new IP address?
Should I reset the time capsule back to factory and configure all over again?
    Any other suggestions.
    Thanks
    Ralph Foss

Did you try resetting Time Machine?
Open System Preferences and open Time Machine

The iPhone and iPad back up to iTunes on your Mac. Then, when your Mac backs up to the Time Capsule, the iOS backups are copied over as well.
    Or
The iPhone and iPad can backup to iCloud
The iPhone and iPad cannot backup directly to the Time Capsule. See this Apple Support document for more details on backups.

  • Mounting name of time capsule changes all the time...

I, since I pluged my TC, its mounting name (/volumes/times capsule/) is always changing with -1, -2... etc. (ex: /volumes/times capsule-3/)
So, all my apps seted to store files on /volumes/time capsule/ can't work!
    How can I fix this?
    thanks

Here is a suggestion and it should remove all the extra names, although it won't solve the issue from happening again. So I would suggest watching for when it does happen - what you were doing, error messages that came up, etc. I've read several posts about this issue, but no one seems to have found a definitive fix.
From a Finder window (or the desktop), eject the backup disk image and then eject the Time Capsule disk. Open a Finder window (if not already open) and from the "Go" menu and select "Go to folder...". Enter /Volumes. In the next window you should see and be able to delete all the excess Time Capsule names (Time Capsule-1, Time Capsule-2, etc).
I would then suggest checking the 'sparsebundle' image for corruption using Disk Utility. To get the image to show in Disk Utility, you need to navigate to the Time Capsule disk using Finder and locate the sparsebundle and then drag it into the Disk Utility left hand sidebar and then you can verify and repair the disk (if necessary).
    Hope this helps.

I use OS X server for maintaing Time Machine backups for several macs
Ah, that's a new wrinkle to me.  I haven't tested the Server product, but there are a number of differences.  As far as I can tell, the firmware update solved this for most, but not all, users of standard OSX.
Are you still on Snow Leopard server?  It's quite different from later versions, I understand.
Have you tried selecting the base station, then Base Station > Restart via Aiport Utility's menubar?  That still disconnects everyone, but might work by itself.
Otherwise, sorry, but I'm out of my comfort zone.
Hopefully one of the networking gurus will have an idea or two.

  • Retrieving iCal data from Time Capsule back up

My system crashed and onfortunatly i had to install a new system. Now i want my 'old' data back in iCal. What do i need to get back from my Time Capsule back up to get the data back in my iCal???
I already retrieved users -> myname -> library -> calendars but this has no effect at all.
    plsssssssssssss help me

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Try this:
Make a copy of the ~/Library/Calendars folder from your backup and put it on your Desktop.
Rename the folder 'Old.icbu' (without the quotes).
There will probably be a dialog confirming that you want to make this name change.
It should now look like an iCal backup file (which is actually a package).
Double click 'Old.icbu' on the Desktop.
(Hopefully) iCal will open and confirm that you want to revert all your calendars to this version.
Let me know how it goes.
    Best wishes
    John M
