Win8 sysprep and OEM drivers in a local folder

Quite simply, in Windows 7 Pro I would drop driver folders into c:\windows\inf\<added-subfolder> that would cover all the systems we support.  At first boot after imaging, Windows 7 would recursively search for drivers in the default path c:\windows\inf
which includes that <added-subfolder> with many subfolders containing many other drivers.
By the time the user logon was available, everything was installed and happy.  Everything worked great.
Yes it can extend the initial post-image boot time but it was worth it for an easy universal image.
Now with Windows 8.1u1 Pro I have tried the same mechanic (with 8.1u1 drivers of course) and it refuses to look in c:\windows\inf\<added-subfolder>.  Sysprep and my answerfile do their job but the system doesn't begin loading any drivers until
reaching the desktop.  It appears that Windows is only initially loading critical drivers and even those are only the Win8 native ones.
Has something changed or been broken that I've missed?
Injecting these drivers with pnputil is not an option.  The registry bloats and breaks the image.  Neither is using SCCM an option.
It's a very simple solution but so far it's refusing to work with Win8.1u1 .
Installing via Update Driver on the device in Device Manager, then pointing to the subfolder, I get:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
The system cannot find the file specified.
I guess that's something to work with.  Digging ...
Update:  pnpunattend run as a script from an administrative group user pops user intervention errors for unsigned drivers.  Do I dare hope that if I alter my answerfile it won't?
I've added:

Within the confines of how we create and deploy Windows systems, is there a _simple_ solution for Windows 8 that results in the same as what we did for Windows 7?
1. FAT Images are created in Hyper-V 2012.
2. All drivers for all possible systems are copied into c:\windows\inf\xinf .
3. Sysprep 1 of the VM creates the default user profile which is then copied to a local, mandatory profile path.
4. Sysprep 2 of the VM then closes the image and shuts down.
5. The VM image is captured by FOG.
6. The image is deployed by FOG to any number of platforms.
7. At first boot the OS installs all drivers, recognizing the subfolder c:\windows\inf\xinf.
8. Eventually sysprep calls a designated .vbs that is run before setupcomplete.cmd, then again by autologon as administrator for however many number of reboots/autologons that a particular system requires before releasing to a normal logon screen.
All possible drivers a system requires MUST be installed prior to any logon so that scripts launched by sysprep can work properly.
Windows 7 happily does all of this without issue BEFORE reaching any logon or scripts.
How can I mimic this behaviour in Windows 8.1u with no server or share resource?
The only way I've got Windows 8.1u to do it so far is to perform this prior to final shutdown by:
REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\UnattendSettings\PnPUnattend\DriverPaths\1" /v Path /t REG_SZ /d "C:\windows\inf\xinf"
C:\Windows\System32\pnpUnattend.exe AuditSystem
=-=-=-=-=-
This bloats the image by several GiB and incurs many unverified publisher prompts to continue while pnpunattend executes, but sysprep loads all device drivers prior to any logon to a destination system, which is great!
I'm looking for specific answers that work within our framework please.

  • Help Fetching files from an FTP server into a DBase or local folder

    Hello Gurus!
I need help to automate or design/write an app capable of (replace a manual process) reading log files in an ftp server folder, this log files are called CDR (Call Detail Record) and named as follow cdr.txt.20020221010000 meaning that this log file was created on 2002/02/21 at 01:00:00.
This CDR log files are generated every hour by a Lucent telephone switch using a software/program called EXS ExchangePlus in ASCII format (fixed length delaminated, Char data type). EXS ExchangePlus writes a record in this CDR/log files after the call is completed, i.e. Calling_Number, Called_Number, Date_connect (yyyymmdd), Time_connect (hhmmss), Charged_time (hhmmss, duration of the call), and so on.
The manual process I am using now is:
    1. Log in the ftp server into the folder where the CDRs log files are, located the latest generated CDRs log files and downloaded them into a local folder/directory. Normally I download the CDR for full day or 24 CDRs log files.
1a. Optionally sometimes I used a program called VEdit compiled/gather all 24 CDRs into a single file.
    2. Once I have downloaded the CDRs I want to process (normally I process a full day 24 CDRs) I imported then into a Data Base temp table, where then I do the conversion of data types (i.e. Dates and times fields from char type -> to ->Date type) and calculations for billing purposes.
So if somebody can help with this, I would really appreciated ideas or any kind of information on how to automated this process.
Im familiar with Java2 platform (using JDeveloper ) so if somebody has done something like this before using java, this would very helpful. Or Maybe using Visual Basic 6.0 would help too.
Thanks Gurus, and I look forward to hear from you soon!
    Alf Pathros!

Thanks for the idea, even though an example would help me more.
I already found the FTPClient class.
I also would like to knwo if there is a away Ican append/merged various files CDRs into a single/one to then dump/import it into the database

  • Rd client via rdweb cannot access local folder

    hi,
i recently installed remote-desktop web-service on Windows 2008 R2 for remote user to access a non-proprietary Microsoft application.
the installation was made in one box include the application
    a. Remote Dekstop Session Host
    b. Remote Desktop Licensing
    c. Remote Desktop Gateway
    d. Remote Desktop Web Access
i have managed to configure it to allow internal and external users to access the application by using RDWeb.
there are 2 outstanding issues here:
    1. i tested the RDWeb to access MS Office (Word/Excel) remoteapp and save a doc to local folder.
tried to save it into my local folder, but it always ended-up with an error :
"Network error: Windows cannot access \\tsclient\d\(any local folder given).   You do not have permission to access \\tsclient\d\.. "
    2. for non Microsoft remoteapp, is there a way (by Group Policy perhaps?) for rdweb-users to locate their local drive/folder within the application?
anyone has ideas to resolve it?
    thank you in advance.
    rgds.

  • Windows Could Not parse or process unattend answer file for pass [specialize] after WDT Litetouch 'sysprep and capture'

I setup an ACER VM6620G (Win7x86) how I wanted, including disabling the administrator account and creating an administrator user "PVA"
Navigated to \\wds\DeploymentShare$\Scripts and ran the litetouch script. Chose my "Sysprep and Capture" task.
Everything went off without a hitch until I restarted the technician pc.
    I got the dreaded
"Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\windows\Panther\unattend.xml] for pass [specialize]. A component or setting specified in the answer file does not exist"
I tried to deploy the captured image to the same computer and got the same error
I've scoured the internet for solutions (Shift+10 opens command prompt. Good to know!) with no luck.
I've saved the unattend.xml and looked for errors- going as far as to install an x86 Win7 virtual machine to validate the unattend.xml file in WISM
Other information that might be useful:
I never used WISM to create an unattend.xml nor did I attach one to the image.
I didn't try to copy user profiles/settings/migrate etc
I imported the captured image to WDT. Created a standard task and added 2 nodes
         -Inject Drivers
         -Install Application
As a side, I've got another image that I've already injected the drivers/installed the application as a test. Everything went smoothly.

14 Metro Apps at the "all apps" screen -- things like Weather, Maps, Calendar, Mail, etc are missing -- and actually look like they aren't installed
as searching for something like "People" -- gives no results.
From what I've been able to gather, the behavior of the start screen should controlled by an appsFolderLayout.bin file, but when I first set up the initial
account (not "administrator", but the initial local admin account), that file does not exist anywhere.
I've tried creating the file manually by running:
    Export-StartLayout -As Bin -Path C:\Temp\appsFolderLayout.bin
and either putting it in \Users\<myadminaccount>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
    or \Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
and sysprepping again (after restoring a snapshot to the pre-sysprep/post-clean install state), but this isn’t making any difference.
When I run sysprep /generalize — the .bin file is deleted and replaced by some other default one — that I’m not sure where it is generated from.
Does anybody have any suggestions here?    Windows 8.0 just worked with my unattend.xml file without having to mess with appsFolderLayout.bin, so I’m not sure what I’m missing.
    Thanks!

If you are still having trouble, this is an outline of the full process I use that seems to be consistently producing good results:
    - Install Windows 8.1 Enterprise with autounattend.xml, in particular, blank administrator password, add user account test, auto-logon as Administrator, run "net user test /delete" immediately after logon to get back to just having the administrator account.
There should be no reason why all that has to be done in autounattend.xml, but it is the way I do it. There are a few other mandatory settings if you want a fully-automated setup.
    - At this point in time the Administrator account only shows a few tiles on the start screen, all actions are performed using the Administrator account.
    - Run Schtasks.exe /change /disable /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\AppxDeploymentClient\Pre-staged app cleanup" before the task has had a chance to run.
    - Install all applications, updates and settings as you want.
    - Run Sysprep, in particular blank administrator password, add user account test, auto-logon as Administrator, run "net user test /delete" immediately after logon to get back to just having the administrator account. Also importantly we set CopyProfile to
false under Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup specialize pass. I don't know because I haven't tried it, but I imagine that if you run this and copy the Administrator profile to the default user profile then the default user profile may be missing some apps. We
do all customization of the default user profile explicitly by loading the registry hive and editing it directly.
After the image is deployed the Admistrator account has all the standard tiles present, but two of them report errors (I think it is Music and Videos). Any other profiles have all tiles present and all apps work.
The full sysprep XML is included below in case it is useful to anybody. The company-specific settings and passwords have been blanked out, but otherwise it is the full one we use and fairly generic apart from the Australian settings. Note that this one is
    for a 64-bit image.

  • Administrator Account Disabled after sysprep and capture task sequence in MDT 2010

    Hi
We are currently migrating from Windows XP to windows 7.  As part of our migration we have 5 base Images (for different areas of the business)
Here is what we are doing:
Create a reference machine with the source files for windows 7 Pro x86
Install applications as part of the Task sequence to build a reference machine.
Make the updates to the machine - required for the build.
Run  the Sysprep and capture template to take the capture of the Reference machine.
Import the Capture into the Operating system folder within MDT2010
Create a task sequecne to deploy the image.
    Deploy the Image for Testing.
Deploy the image to a machine
Update the machine with the defects
Re Capture the deployed machine and call it ver2.wim
    re deploy ver2.wim
    Testers test
Defects logged + additional user settings to be captured in the build
Re capture and sysprep runs says the capture has been succesful however after a reboot the administrator account is disabled.
We cant seem to capture anything from here on in.  Nothing has been changed in the unattend.
Autologon is set to enable the administrator account and the password is set to blank as this is then handled by policy when the machine is joined to the domain - we have not enabled the unattended join to the domain at this point in time but it will be
    for deploying the image.
Have we got our image strategy wrong? does the same rule apply about sysprep running more than 3 times on a single machine if it is captured and redeployed after a sucessfully sysprep to the same hardware or even different hardware.

    Hi,
One of the things Sysprep/WAIK do is disable the adminsitrator account.
You mentioned that you are setting the autologing to the administrator account and that you are setting it with a blank password, you can add a simple command in to sysprep's xml to reenable the account:
    <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Deployment" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">

    <Order>1</Order>
    <Path>net user administrator /active:yes</Path>
    </RunSynchronousCommand>
    </RunSynchronous>
    </component>
Give it a try and let us know .

  • Language choice for library to be linked in both KMDF and UMDF drivers

    Hello,
I'm writing a library that needs to be linked into both KMDF and UMDF drivers and was wondering if i can use C++ to write the library. C++ in UMDF should work fine, but going over lot of discussions about using C++ in KMDF drivers,
it looks like very basic C++ should work fine but using virtual functions, new/delete etc will probably come back and bite you in many ways. Most of these discussions are from way back in 2009 or earlier.
Do those still hold true ? What is the extent of C++ i can use in a library that will be linked into both UMDF and KMDF drivers ?
    Thanks
    -R___K

If you are using the Win8 WDK or later, you should be able to use a very limited C++ and the tools will flag constructs that are not supported.  The discussions you found are mostly still valid, there is no new and delete (unless you roll your
own), but you can use simple classes and C++ syntax.  Basically take a look at the old forum post
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/452f4f41-6a81-4cfc-a5b6-46e0b76dfbe5/support-of-vs2011-in-c-for-device-drivers?forum=wdk

  • Adding Office causes MDT to stop at sysprep and display "Can not find c:\LTIBootStrap.vbs"

I'm new to MDT.  I can use the standard TS template to install, sysprep and capture a vanilla Windows 8.1 to an image and deploy that image to a new computer. No problem.
I added MS Office 2013 as an application.  If try to add Office 2013 to the reference image, by selecting it in the setup wizard, MDT stops at the sysprep stage, the reference machine reboots, goes through the "we are setting thing up for you...",
then displays "Can not find LTIBootStrap.vbs".
I'm using a Generation 2 VM for the reference image, with the x64 boot iso media.  The only way to start it is to change the boot order from file "bootmgfw.efi" back to the .iso.  The capture stage then continues.  The captured image
then seems to be corrupt as the local list is blank so the deployment cannot continue.
Why does installing Office 2013 to the reference image cause this problem?  Vanilla OS images don't have this problem.  What am I doing wrong?  I'm quite new to MDT but can't find an answer to this.
    Thanks.

I am running into the same error. Win 8.1 build 9600 ISO install to a gen 2 VM. Office 2013 32 bit.  I can get the TS to run all the way through and capture if I leave windows updates off in the TS.  As soon as I turn on the updates I get
the error (Can not find LTIBootStrap.vbs) at sysprep and capture stage.  Good to know it worked for you on gen 1 VM.  I am trying that now and will report.

  • MDT 2010 - USB 3.0 issue after OS Install and Inject Drivers steps

    Hello,
I'm using MDT 2010 and I'm booting and image PCs from a USB drive. On some newer systems (eg: Latitude El530) I have issues when I use the USB 3 ports (if media is connected to USB 2 port, everuthing is fine). The systes recognizes the USB stick and I can
start the Task Sequence just fine. I pass the Install OS step and Inject Drivers step, but after the first reboot, I get the prompt to insert the media to continue the deployment. This happens only if the stick is connected to the USB 3.0 ports. If I
check Device Manager, I see the USB device withouth driver. The drivers are already on the USB stick...I puled them from FileRepository from an updated system with all the drivers. Is anyone else having similar issues? I see other people have USB 3 issues,
but mostlly to start the deployment from it, or at partitioning...I don't have that issue. My issue starts after the OS is installed.
    Any sugestion is appreciated...Thank you...

You should be able to do this.  nVidia Optimus video drivers have the same issue.  How we solved this
We create selection profiles for each make and model
We inject every single driver in profile for each make and model
The Optimus driver then gets installed because it is local to the machine already.
Why it didn't work before is the child device never gets detected during the PNP enum that happens when you have 'Install only matching drivers from the selection profile' so never ends up in the local driver store.
P.S. We ONLY have the drivers that install imported into each make model folder.

    Hi
i got the new GT60 with the win8 preinstalled and i installed Win7 on it and i downloaded the drivers from the MSI web site and the utilities from MSI web site,
but the SCM don't show the bluetooth for disable /enable ,i tried the SCM from Win8 on Win7 and it has not Wireless nor bluetooth, and i tried to update the last nvidia driver from the website "Beta" after i uninstalled mine ,but it says that it's not compatible HW so get back to the old one i have from MSI web site but it says the same now
    the Model :GT60 2OC-024
    CPU:Intel 4900
    GPU:Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M
    Chipset:Intel HM87 Chipset
    LAN:Killer DoubleShot
    Wireless LAN:Killer DoubleShot
i tried to use the Driver Genius Pro to update the driver  but it didn't download the drivers
    any help

i contacted the MSI support and they said that i need to update the EC,i did update the EC by the link they give my using WinFlasher not the DOS flasher and nothing changed, so i talked to them again and then they told me to flash the Bios ,and they give me a shortcut to disable the bluetooth "Fn+F9" so i asked them to the complete list of shortcuts so i don't need to flash the bios and my problem is solved, but they give me instructions in win8 to disable the wireless :( even if i told them it's win7  .
so if any one has a complete list of shortcuts that do the action of the SCM ,please give it to me.
i'll try to flash the bios by the forum tool with the bios they give me
Well, to be perfectly honest, the problem with the soft keys is actually in the electronic controller. We've seen it and proven this out a number of times, unfortunately MSI Engineers still believe the problem does not exist, and that it should work fine in both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
All I can say is to call in and continue doing what they ask. Eventually they will run out of things to do and just keep commenting that the shortcuts above the keyboard are controlled by the electronic controller, and perhaps the firmware isn't working properly in Windows 7.
The unfortunate aspect of this, is even if you flashed the Win 7 EC firmware (DO NOT DO THIS), other functions will not work properly.

  • Hi. I am just about to move from the UK to Kuwait. Will I have any problems using my iPhone 4 and able to join a local carrier using this device please?

Hi. I am just about to move from the UK to Kuwait. Will I have any problems using my iPhone 4 and able to join a local carrier using this device please?

If your phone is locked to a particular carrier, you must contact them to request they unlock it. Once they've taken care of that and you've followed the instructions to complete the unlock process, you will be able to use the phone elsewhere.

  • Sever issue with Xorg and Nvidia Drivers

I run a 2.6.20 kernel with Xorg and Nvidia drivers all from arch rep on a Asus NV6200. Everything works fine, except one thing. When I exit X, the monitor shuts down imediatly. It wont start up at all, not even by manual startup. I cant understand what happens. The configuration is correct, is done with the correct settings for my video-card and monitor taken directly from the documentation. I cant use my X server at all since several days ... I checked the logs and there are no EE's. Anyway ... here is the log. Help anyone can help, I cant use X at all.

No ... the problem is in the kernel that comes precompiled.
    I did this test.
The first time I installed the kernel I unloaded nvidiafb since I dont like it.
When I install nvidiafb back something strange happends. Nvidia module fails to load.
The modprobe sais it cannot find the device nvidia.ko ... but it is there!
So my best guess is, there is something with the kernel. Any ideas?
    Problem resolved, installed older driver

I am having issues with my web module on Lightroom 4 (Mac OS 10.9.5). "an unknown error occurred" while trying to upload to my FTP (no changes in my FTP). Bandaid fix was to export to local folder and upload via Filezilla. However, now that is no longer working and although upload completes, the URL takes you to a "Forbidden - do not have permission to read this file" page. Lightroom is changing the permissions of each file to 000 instead of 644 for index files and 755 for all others. How can I change the permissions settings in Lightroom?

  • Design view and browser view in DW are different than when I view from local folder

I'm brand new to Dreamweaver CS5.5 and here is my problem:
I've made an html page in dreamweaver with a banner, with an additional graphic and some text on top of the banner.  It displays just fine in every browser when I view from the local folder, but when I open DW and view, it displays incorrectly in all three design, live and browser views within DW.  If I make changes to the css file until it views correctly in design view, it no longer displays correctly from the local folder and it still doesn't view correctly in live or browser view within DW.  If what I'm doing isnt going to display accurately in any of the views provided by Dreamweaver as compared to the live server, whats the point in having this software?  I could just keep building webpages in notepad and uploading with CoreFTP.
Any suggestions?  Is it some setting that I dont know about that I need to change within DW?   Please help.

align="center" is deprecated (obsolete) code in XHTML & HTML5 doc types.  Instead of styling markup with HTML, you should be using CSS.
    CSS
    .center {text-align:center}
    HTML
    <p class="center">some centered text here</p>
With respect to break tags, in XHTML doc types the correct syntax is <br /> not <br>.  However your usage of line breaks is inconsistent with good symantic markup.  Use headings <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> for important keywords.  Use <p> for descriptive paragraphs.  Use <ul> <li> or <ol> <li> for lists.  Line breaks should be used minimally if ever.
XHTML doc types require all tags to be lowercase.  Uppercase tags will throw errors.
Your design is too rigid.  When text size is increased in browsers, your content is unreadable.  See screenshot.
    SOLUTIONS:
    1) DO NOT USE POSITION ABSOLUTE.  You don't need it.  Absolute positioning removes content from the normal document flow resulting in a jumbled mess.  Use default CSS positioning (none) with margins, padding & floats to align elements.
    2) Remove HEIGHT values from all CSS containers.  Height limits a container's capacity to hold more content when needed.  Container height should always be determined by the amount of content it holds; not explicit values.  If required to reveal a background image, for example, use CSS min-height instead of height.

  • How do I move all the messages and folders in `Local Folder' to my main account folder? The stuff in local is from importing from Outlook

I imported my mail from Outlook and they went to Local Folders. I want them in the main folder section for my account. How do I move them there?
At the moment I have to create each folder and then copy the contents from one folder to the other - crazy, and I have dozens of folders

As Chgrist1 said, that is how it works. Having looked as how Outlook stores mail, and everything else. It is a wonder anything ever comes out that is useable. PST files are a mess. First thing they do is pull the email apart and store header, body and attachments is three different places.
You will also find (most likely) that your accounts in Outlook were POP and the default in Thunderbird is IMAP. merging IMAP and POP files and folders is fraught with difficulties and dangers. It would be a brave developer that tried that in an import.
In the case of IMAP all your mail is one the server, so import is not all that important. However copying a gigabyte or two of of outlook mail into your imap server could exhaust your available message storage space there and cause the import to fail completely.
So If you want to do what your saying, first confirm that your not using IMAP mail. Otherwise your experience is most likely going to be exceedingly poor.
If you are using POP mail, then changing the setting in your pop account to cause it to use the global inbox will make a single mail account appear, "Local Folder", with your outlook mail as a sub folder of that.
Dragging a folder from the imported outlook tree to Local folders is not difficult, as long as you remember that folders hang of other folders, so your dragging them to a parent, not a position on the screen you like.
