Windows 10 update deprecates Windows Media Center

I was looking forward to the Wnidows 10 upgrade until I heard that Windows Media Center was going to be deleted during the update. My PC has great hardware integration with this software; DVB-T firmware and a really usefull remote control. All of which is likely to be unusable after the upgrade. Does HP have any future alternatives under Windows 10 planned that may be adopted by current users to maintain similar functionality?

According to the Device Manager, the internal TV Tuner is from AVerMedia, an H323 MiniCard Hybrid DVB-T.I have tried a few applications to connect to this tuner, but none have been successful, nor offered functionality similar to Windows Media Center. AVerMedia do not even acknowledge this specific hardware on their site, and their software is bundled with the hardware, which HP have not provided as part of this PC. DVB-T hardware aside, the remote is designed for Windows Media Center, and may not function with other software. The original enquiry was directed towards HP's future computers which will be bundled with Windows 10. If these future computers also have a TV Tuner, will that associated software be functional with current TouchSmart PCs?

  • Lenovo Solution Center does not sense or allow Windows Update after Windows 10 upgrade

After installing Windows 10 (and having no particular issues with the installation), LSC won't leave me alone about needing to run Windows Update. But when I click the Launch button provided, nothing happens. LSC is also recommending I update drivers and things, but the link provided to the Lenovo website also doesn't work. I had to run Windows Update and find the updated drivers on the Lenovo site myself. I happen to have a G505s, but the issue is obviously not restricted to one model.

Maybe a Lenovo server is down. Check again later or tomorrow.
Of course it might be that your firewall or other protection software is blocking the application from communicating with the Lenovo server...

  • Intel Matrix Storage Manager disables Windows Update and Windows Validation on Windows 7 64-bit

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R61 8918CTO on which I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64-bit) on a new Seagate Momentus XT 750GB drive. The installation was trouble-free, as were all of the post-install Windows Updates.
Then I installed ThinkVantage System Update 4.03 and used it to install most of the available Lenovo updates. Big mistake. I'll spare you a detailed account of the hours I wasted troubleshooting, rolling back to previous restore points, and doing more troubleshooting, but it turns out that installing Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver v. 8.9.2.1002 caused Windows Update and Windows Validation to fail.
Symptoms: Windows Update control panel can't check for updates and reports that the Windows Update service isn't running when it actually is. Online Windows Validation fails and the standalone Windows Validation utility won't install. Microsoft programs that require a validated copy of Windows (e.g., Microsoft Security Essentials) won't install.
Solution: Roll back the driver for the relevant SATA controller to the previous driver.
I've reinstalled ThinkVantage System Update 4.03 and hidden the proposed Intel Matrix Storage Manager update; since then, I've used it to complete my Lenovo updates without issue.
I hope this post will help other people with this problem find the solution a lot faster than it took me!

This happened after installing a new advanced format drive with 4k-byte sectors, I'd guess.  If the storage driver doesn't report the physical sector size to Windows, update fails.
I just ran across this myself (again) putting Win 7 on a T400.
I don't know why this is still going on.  It may be that the update lists for older machines still have pre-AF-drive drivers listed.
FYI, another fix is going to the Intel site and installing the latest Matrix Storage Manager AHCI driver.  This may be more desirable than rolling back to an older driver in some cases.

  • Got Display driver via Windows Update for Windows 8.1 and try to use it for Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi Everyone,
the following driver cab is from Windows Update:
    https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=5be01620eea95d8c&id=5BE01620EEA95D8C!138&ithint=file,.cab&authkey=!APDi54-R1Ob5IWQ
    It includes this display driver:
    Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)
My problem is: I can't install this driver on Windows Server 2012 R2.
I tried the following, nothing worked:
    a) pnputil -i -a intel.cab
    b) Extract cab, update the device's driver in device manager, select "search for driver software in this location"
    c) copy the files in system32/, system32/drivers, syswow64/ from a Windows 8.1 system to a Windows Server 2012 R2 system
Isn't it true that any Windows 8.1 driver should also work for Windows Server 2012 R2 (same os version)?
    Thanks for your replies.

  • Windows 7 as a media center extender?

I have a Vista Ultimate box that I use as my media center. I have a notebook with Windows 7 installed on it that I would like to use as a media center extender. Is this possible?
For the life of me I can't seem to figure it out. My Vista machine hasn't given me the notice of a new media center PC on the network like it does when a new Vista media center shows up...
    Appreciate any guidance....

Hi there, I asked the following question over at the Windows 7 beta QnA and got silence, and from what I am reading here, I thought perhaps you could answer. This may be an odd place to post new questions (in mid-discussion) but it seems on topic, and I didn't want to waste readers' time by posting a new topic.
Will Windows 7 stream to another PC or "Play To" recorded TV files that were recorded using WMC?Will
other Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP PCs be able to play
recorded TV streams from a Windows 7 machine over a home network?
    If
so, will those PCs be able to get all the show info such as title, time
and date, episode summary, etc in order to navigate and choose the
    correct recorded TV episode?
Another, similar question is will Windows
7 be able to act as a software-based media center extender for another
machine (Windows 7, Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, or XP MCE) running
    Windows Media Center?
One more question is...is any of this possible in Windows Vista? I have one PC with Vista that I use as my media center/DVR and my other systems in the house are running Xp or Mac O/S. I can share and then access the recorded TV folder via my network and play the files on the other systems in the house (yes, even the Mac) but I don't get any of the fantastic WMC front-end UI, which turns out to be more than just a pretty wrapper slapped on it, because it also gives specific episode names, recording dates, and episode summaries, and groups the episodes per series(if desired). When combing the files via a network share, the naming convention is all convoluted and the experience is not very intuitive. I could use an extender such as the xbox 360 to watch this stuff on tv, but it is more convenient to watching on my computers.

  • Lenovo Solution Center says Windows Update needed Windows 10

Thanks for your help, I have the Lenovo B50-30 AIO and recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Everything seemed to go flawlessly with the exception of one small problem. I am constantly being nagged by the Lenovo Solution Center to Update my Operating System. When I run Windows update, it says 'No Available Updates', yet LSC still nags me with that screen. When I go into LSC and click on the Launch button to fix the problem, nothing happens. Is this a problem with LSC or is there something that I am doing wrong?

    All,
I've shared this conversation with our LSC development team and here is how I understand the siutation...
LSC 2.8 was tested with Windows 10, but this situation occurs because Windows 10 does not fill in the update date after the OS install.   After 1 day, and the date changes, the symptoms should go away.
We are working on improving this in the next version fo LSC 3.1 which is a few weeks away...
    Edit:
Speedwell, I've also noted the launch button issues with the team to re-test and make sure works properly.
Update 8/5/15 - confirmed launch button issue on 2.8.5 and lower.  This is going to be addressed in a new version.
An interrim support tip is being released on our support site to explain the work around:
    1) Navigate to taskbar
    2) Type "Windows update" in teh search the web and windows field
    3) Select "Check for Updates" at the top of the search results
    4) The Windows update will appear
    5) Select check for updates button
Apologies that this did not work as intended, and I appreciate your patience as we release an updated version.
    Best regards,
    Mark

  • Windows Update broke NVIDIA Control Center

A windows update that updated the Windows NVIDIA Driver left me with a broken NVIDIA control center complaining about a version mismatch. Why hasn't Lenovo pushed a ThinkVantage Drivers and Updates update to fix that already?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    @ivanz,
Was the Nvidia driver listed as an Optional, Recommended or Critical update in the Windows Update?
Also, try uninstalling the current video driver and download the latest one from the Lenovo Support site.

  • ITunes compatibility problems with Windows 8 Pro with Media Center

I get this message on my screen:
iTunes.exe has been set to run in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows. For best results, turn off compatibility mode for iTunes before you open it.
When I open my iTunes the only music I can see is that which I downloaded from iTunes; the other music I have which I have physically loaded via CD, although on my PC and playable through Media Center is unobtainable through my iTunes home window.
Can anybody help me fathom this out?

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing,
Usually, a computer can appear to hang (stop responding) in the situations of insufficient system resources, high CPU usage, high disk usage, deadlock in kernel mode or key system processes, or hardware problem.
You can check if this hang issue usually hangs when high load, that may points to a resource issue, enable perfmon log to located which process caused that.
Regarding to the deadloack issue, based on my experience, most of these issues caused by the outdated driver, refer to the following action plans:
    ==========
    1. upgrade all the hardware driver, firmware, BIOS.
    2. upgrade the AV software.
    3. Run disk check, if there is build-in hardware health Diagnostics Utility, also run it.

  • Windows update on windows 7 laptop will not work

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
I am receiving the above message every time I click the ' check for updates' icon. Restarting does not resolve the problem.
I have trawled the internet and found a solution that worked for several people- going to services.msc, closing windows update,
deleting files in c:\windows\software distribution, reopening windows update through services.msc- however this has not resolved the issue for me.
Under systems.msc it is listed as started, automatic (delayed)
The Background Intelligence Transfer service is the same. I have checked the profiles of both programs and there are no discrepancies.
I have used the microsoft fix it program. No effect
    Please help!

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver was THE fix for me as well.  I had spent many hours on this today trying to resolve the following errors:
Windows Update could not get updates because "the
service was not running" (even though Windows Update and the BITS services and others
    were in fact running).
Also Windows Defender Service could not start.  I opened the Windows Defender Control Panel applet, it told me it was stopped, I clicked on the Turn On button, while at the same time I monitored the services app (command prompt - services.msc).
I watched the status of Windows Defender service.  It kept changing from Stopped to Started just for a second or so, then the service would immediately stop again.  In Control Panel, Windows Defender finally timed out
with the same error listed by amerianz:  Error 0x8e5e0247: 0x8e5e0247
I tried many things from different search results for these 2 issues.  Among other things, after I disabled Antivirus, I stopped WUAUSERV and BITS, renamed Windows\SoftwareDistribution then restarted.  I tried a Windows Update
FixIt on the Microsoft FixIt center.  It said it found and fixed Windows Update issues, but no change.  I tried running SFC /SCANNOW from command prompt. The log said it found corrupted files but this made no difference.
Finally after installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, my PC immediately found new hardware and installed a driver.  Note: before installing this driver, all hardware listed in
Device Manager already had drivers installed.  I was then prompted to reboot.  After rebooting, Windows Update still had a red X and could
not check for updates.  So I opened the Windows Defender Control Panel applet, which showed that updates were available.  This meant of course that the Windows Defender service had started successfully.  I then clicked on the
Check for Updates button on Windows Defender, and after several seconds while Windows Defender was looking for updates, I noticed that the
Windows Update icon had appeared in the system tray and Windows was downloading new updates.  Both issues fixed.  Many thanks.

  • How to disable the windows update message "Windows update hasn't been able to check for updates for the last 30 days"

    Hi,
We work on a domain that uses Symantec Management console to administrate our patch enviroment. We have windows updates disabled. But our Windows 8 machines get this message once a month
"Windows update hasn't been able to check for updates for the last 30 days"
Just wondering if anyone knows which GPO to use to disable this setting as I have been unable to find it.
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can turn off the message by GUI in Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center, in the right pane, click "Change Action Center settings", then untick the "Windows Update" option.
For GPO, you can disable all balloon notifications:
User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar\Turn off all balloon notifications
Or remove Action Center icon itself
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Remove the Action Center icon
And I haven't found a GPO to turn on\off a specific message mentioned in the action center, but the setting for the message is related with registry key under
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Action Center\Checks
but the value under the key is binary, hard to control, if you have interest, you can export the key from a preference pc, then deploy the GPO via
User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry

  • Windows Update for Windows Surface RT 8.1

    Hello,
I have been through some forums, but can't find a definite answer regarding updating Surface RT 8.1
We have some Windows Surface RT 8.1 devices, as RT they are non-domain. My query is:
    1. Is there a WSUS (or System Center config manager) which can handle updates for Windows RT devices like surface?
    2. Since we have more then 60 devices, is there a way we can install the updates without having to connect each of them to the internet and downloading the updates separately.
    Many thanks,

    Dear all,
Thanks for the tips...none of them worked but I found the key to finding what works through the posts...first of all, it was not as simple as going into the permissions and turning mic and webcam on - they were both on.  I then was trying to follow the other post about reinstalling the drivers but had to first figure out how to do this - i.e. where they could be found.  During this process I went followed the following tip:
Open Windows Sound Control Panel and click on the Communications tab. Select there the appropriate option for what Windows should do when communications activity is detected.
What I found was the microphone that I was trying to deinstall was showing there are the default and when I went to test it, I noted that on this tab, it was down to 0 volume.  I moved the volume to the max, tested it and then went into skype and voila...it worked!
What is irritating about all of this - guess it is real life - we all have problems and the fixes are in many cases different.  At any rate, thanks to this forum I was able to fix my problem!
