Windows 7 automatic computer maintenance - Registry edit for group policy?

A lot of folks at my company have broken desktop shortcuts (refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978980 for the issue) and I want to edit the group policy so we can turn off scheduled computer maintenance for everyone. Is there a specific
registry location for this change?

Not sure how to disable shorcut cleanup portion. Here is what it does
Broken shortcuts - Broken shortcuts are invalid references to programs and other resources. For example, a desktop shortcut for a USB device may be regarded as broken if the USB device is not connected when the System Maintenance troubleshooter
performs its maintenance. When there are more than 4 broken shortcuts on the desktop, then all broken shortcuts on the desktop are removed.
Troubleshooting history is taking up disk space - Frees up disk space by removing troubleshooting history logs older than 1 month.
System time is incorrectly set - Sets the correct system time and synchronize system clock with the time server. When the system time is set incorrectly, features that rely on time measurement such as Product Activation, malware scanners,
browser certificates, etc... might not work correctly.
Unused desktop icons - Icons and shortcuts on the desktop that have been unused in 3 months are removed.
Disk volume errors - Frees up disk space by repairing hard disk volume errors such as bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files and directory errors. These problems can cause the file system to report incorrect volume details and occupy
excessive disk space.
Error reports are taking up disk space - Frees up disk space by removing error reports and logs older than 1 month.

Hi,
The All Markup/Simple Markup selection is controlled by the RevModeShowSimpleMarkup value within the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options
The value is 0 (zero) for All Markup or 1 (one) for Simple Markup.
If we close all Word instances, and change the value to 1, then start Word, the All Markup option should be selected.
In addition, some track change settings can also be controlled by the GPO settings in the following location:
Administrative Templates > Microsoft Word 2013 > Word Options > Track changes and compare

Symptom
On Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2, when you use the Search for Group Policy Objects feature in GPMC, the “Value” field is not populated when you choose “User Configuration” as the Search Item. (See Figure 1.)

Cause
The happens because the Data of the (Default) value of the following Registry Key is not correct.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions\{4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6}]
By default the Data is (value not set). (see Figure 2)

Resolution
The registry keys under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions] are the Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions. The CSE name of the GUID {4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6} is
RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
1. Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions\{4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6}]
2. Take the ownership of this key: Right click on the registry key and choose Permissions option and click the Advanced button on the dialogue window. Then on the Advanced Security Settings dialogue window, click Change button to take the ownership
of the key for the current logon account and make the current logon account Full Control permission with the registry key. (See Figure 3.)

3. Change the data of (Default) value from "(value not set)" to
"RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Component". (See Figure 4)

4. Once the steps above are completed, the Value drop down list will be populated again when you perform Search in GPMC. (See Figure 5)

Click on a link in Outlook 03 message, the "locate link browser" dialogue pops up until I cancel it. The only info on the web is for xp, and the tab they tell you to use does not exist in Windows 7. Tried suggested reg edits for Vista, they don't work.

This is what does not work, its the same instructions I am referring to in my question, if you noticed. I tried all that but reinstalling, which I will try now. (Update: that did not work either). There is no "file types" tab in Windows 7, and I did the registry edits, nothing worked. This is a tired old answer from years ago, and simply does not work with the newer versions of the OS and Firefox. Thanks for trying, but I searched before I posted my question. This only started with Firefox 7 upgrade.

Remote Registry enabled through Group Policy

I am working in a Win2011 SBS environment and trying to enable services (Automatic) through Group Policy on all workstations in the domain. I need the following settings enabled but not sure how to do it in SBS. Any help is greatly appreciated.

(Note: RPC services & WMI Service should be started by default. Remote Registry is manual and not started by default.)
Policy Configuration :
I would start with Creating a New GPO with the name "Automatic Service Policy"

How to install Windows Updates on a 2012 Domain Controller w/Group Policy Settings

Hello All,
I'm having an issue installing Windows Updates on my Windows Server 2012 Standard with AD DS role, acting as a backup DC.
I have Group Policies setup for the Domain Controllers to download updates from my WSUS server but not to install them. When I go to my Windows Server 2003 R2 Domain Controller, I can install updates via the "Install Updates and Shutdown". That
option doesn't show up on the 2012 server. I can see from my WSUS server and the event viewer that the updates are being downloaded to the 2012 server........just no option for me to install the updates.
Am I just missing something or will I need to change the way my Group Policy is setup to allow installs and/or downloads? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So I've totally removed the GPO settings for configuring updates on the Default Domain Controllers OU and I can get the Windows Server 2003 Server to get updates from Windows Updates, but the 2012 Server still won't show me how to download or install any
updates. It just states on the log-in screen that there are "Windows Updates Sign in and install important updates".
Well guess what Microsoft! I've signed in and still don't see where I can install updates!!!
I guess because you've set AU=3.
There doesn't seem to be much documented in depth about AU/WUAgent (not in the history of forever), but Lawrence and others in the WSUS forum do cover a lot of related question about the agent and also GP settings.
Lawrence has blogged a lot of detail about the registry settings which are available for AU/WU, and how some of those settings are not practically of any use since WinXP.
So, even though your question isn't about WSUS, the WSUS forum is a great place to visit for help for WUAgent etc.

Redirect Document Recovery using registry setting or Group Policy

Hi all, I am deploying In Design CS5.5 (version 7.5) on several Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Citrix servers. The users login to the server and use the server desktop to run applications. For many apps we have used redirection for cache folders etc to try and keep the user's windows profile as small as possible. When an application uses the registry to store its file paths then this can easily be done with group policy, I haven't been able to find any key for In Design that holds the Document Recovery path or any other cache type paths.
Does anyone know where this path is stored?
Any recommendations for methods on redirecting adobe paths out of the user's profile?

The path to the recovery folder is stored as part of the User's application preferences in InDesign Defaults, I believe. There is Browse button under FIle Hnadling that lets the user choose the location for the folder.
I don't know if it will help you, but I maintain a group of workstations for the student paper at the local community college, all of which have DeepFreeze installed making a local recovery folder useless, so I set the folder on one machine to a network drive, then cloned the prefs to the other workstations. Seems to work great.

Registry edit for windows

Hi..anyone knows how to access the regedit such tat i get to the page in the windows registry tat shows the programs/files that runs when my internet connection is on..
is it regedit->LocalMachine->Software->Microsoft->IE somewhere???

Try using the JavaSystemToolkit. It is actually a jni library that lets you manipulate the windows registry. http://jst.sourceforge.net

Adding a Registry Key via Group Policy on Windows server 2008 R2

Hi all;
I need to add the following Registry Key and values to several PCs across the network, I tried doing so via a logon script and via Registry Preferences through GP but it didn't work!
Method 1: Logon script:
regedit.exe /S \\bbk-files\BBK Templates\slxbasic.reg
The slxbasic.reg contains the following:

When I check the GP result for the required PCs, I see that the GP is applied, but when I check the registry, I don't find the required values their!

I am trying to query the version of a deployed application within a GPO from active directory using wmi.

I don't think you can query GPO information using WMI, but you can use WMI to read Resultant Set of Policy settings. See
RSoP WMI Classes for more information.
Is there any particular reason for using WMI in your case? You can easily retrieve this information using powerShell. The code below will list name and ver of all software install entries of a particular GPO:

Difference between Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1 (Tablet Edition) and Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1

I am trying to pull a report for all Windows 7 machines. But, i could find 2 attributes in view V_r_system that are operating_system_name_and0 and operatingsystem0 where I can get the OS information. Few machines are showing as "Microsoft Windows NT
Workstation 6.1" on operating_system_name_and0 and few are "Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1 (Tablet Edition)".
I am so curious to know about "Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1 (Tablet Edition)", so I just compared those machines with V_GS_Computer_system view to know whether these machines are a normal Laptop or Tablet based laptop. But, those are ALL
NORMAL LAPTOPS ONLY. however, those machines OSes are showing as "Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1 (Tablet Edition)".
But, the build numbers and OS versions are same as "Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1" machines. So,
I could not find any difference between "Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1" machines and "Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1 (Tablet Edition)" machines in terms of models number , OS build number.
Could someone of you please why the operating_system_name_and0 attribute shows as "Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 6.1 (Tablet Edition)" for part of the machines.

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Implement Group Policy for the 1st time

This is my first server. We have 15 users and 20 devices, all clients are running Win7 Pro.
On the Dashboard, Devices tab, when I click on each device there is an option to implement Group Policy in the right-hand task pane. Does this mean I can implement it for one device at a time? Or will it happen for everyone in the domain?
I'm hesitant to start. Is this something where I should wait for the weekend, so I can restore from a backup if need be?

Time to get a basic Windows networking reference book and read up on group policy. Policies are applied by the system on a predicable refresh rate, which if memory servers is 15 minutes. This can be forced from the stations with the cli command "gpupdate
/force" but in most cases there is little need to do so.
Some, like folder redirection, only impact the stations on reboot/sign on

Can't Remove IE Maintenance settings from group policy

Dear Techies,
In group policy under IE Maintenance I configured
some settings like home page and proxy settings etc, now I removed all
settings from group policy, I cleared every thing but still I can see the IE settings under group policy.
1)automatically detect settings                   Disabled
2)automatic browser configuration             Not configured.
Now
the problem is I am giving some proxy settings in IE manually when I
restarted the system proxy settings are getting empty and again I have to
give them.
Please tell the procedure to remove IE Maintenance completely from group policy.

Hi,
If GPO settings are not removed completely or settings were not saved correctly, this issue may occur.
Let’s try to check if Registry settings was changed when changing IE proxy settings.
1.   Open IE and change proxy settings. Click OK to apply.
2.   Open "regedit", navigate to
HKCU\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
   In the right panel, are Proxy settings correct?
3.   Log off and test. If the issue persists, please help to collect gpresult log.
Run "gpresult /v >>c:\gpresult.log", send gpresult.log to [email protected]
4.   On DC, open GPO, navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy,
Double-click Internet Explorer Maintenance policy processing, Make sure it’s Note Configured or Disabled.
Navigate to IE Maintenance, right-click Internet Explorer Maintenance, choose Reset Browser settings. Delete all file in the following folder.
\\FQDN\Sysvol\FQDN\Policies\<GPOGUID>\User\Microsoft\IEAK
Note: Replace FQDN and <GPOGUID> accordingly.
5.   On client, delete files in the following folder.
%windir%\System32\GroupPolicy\User\Microsoft\IEAK
Documents and Settings\<<username>>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Custom Settings\Custom0\
Documents and Settings\<<username>>\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\pbk\Rasphone.pbk (for connection settings)

Server 2012 Win 8.1 GPO Remote Registry Service & Group Policy Trace

I'm trying to enable the Remote Registry Service via GPO (Computer > Preferences > Control Panel > Services).
I set the following (and left the other config items at default):
Startup: Automatic
Service name: RemoteRegistry
Service action: Start service
This only results in a message in the event log and a message when running "gpupdate /force" both saying
"Windows failed to apply the Group Policy Services settings. Group Policy Services settings might have its own log file. Please click on the "More information" link."
HA! When was the last time one of those links helped anyone?
So I tried to enable "Computer > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Group Policy > Logging and tracing > Configure Services preference logging and tracing" and set
Event logging Informational, Warnings and Errors
Tracing On
User trace c:\Trace\User.log
Computer trace c:\Trace\Computer.log
Planning trace c:\Trace\Planning.log
Maximum size of trace file (KB) 1024
I made the C:\Trace folder.
And NOTHING.
So the GPO doesn't log anything meaningful to the Event Viewer (and tells you to look somewhere that says it can't help you), The same thing is in the "Operational" GPO log, Group Policy Result and GPRESULT /h <filename> give you the same
meaningless poop.
Is there any way to start the flippin' service with the GPO, and is there a way to get any kind of meaningful logging?

If we want to get verbose information about group policy processing, we can try to enable logging in the Gpsvc.log file.
