Windows (7) boots to blank screen via GRUB

I have Arch installed as my main OS however now need to get a dual boot working with Windows 7.
I have installed Windows 7 to a partition as below
sda 8:0 0 931.5G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 734G 0 part / //Arch Linux Install
├─sda2 8:2 0 100M 0 part //Partition windows created?
└─sda3 8:3 0 197.4G 0 part //main Windows partition
My Grub.conf has the below section which has been generated by OS-prober
menuentry 'Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2)' --class windows --class os $menuentry_id_option 'osprober-chain-EE8401AB840176FD' {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ntfs
set root='hd0,msdos2'
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,msdos2 --hint-efi=hd0,msdos2 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,msdos2 EE8401AB840176FD
else
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root EE8401AB840176FD
fi
chainloader +1
When I boot windows all I get is a blank screen, althought the windows splash sound does play, so im not sure if this is actually a boot issue or perhaps just an issue with windows so wanted to check here first.
Thanks

If you're hearing the splash noise, it boots. No issue with GRUB.

What lead_org is referring to is commonly known as "re-balling" which involves unsoldering the Southbridge chip from the planar, replacing all (6-700) solder balls with new ones and then re-attaching it under heat/pressure.

  • Blank screen after grub

    Nvidia GT610 through HDMI
I know this issue is one of the more popular ones (at least for me); however, after several hours of research, there is not much to go off of and nearly no information pertaining to this card.
A while back, I posted an issue about a garbled screen when booting into a live enviornment and really got no where; however, I was able to work around it by using the VGA port on my motherboard and get Arch and ssh installed.
With the closed source drivers installed, I was able to get something other than a garbled screen.  That something, unfortunately, is just a blank screen.  There isn't even an xorg log file in /var/log.
    nomodeset produces the same results.
Any sort of lead at this point is appreciated.
    Thank you

I have same problem: black screen after grub. This started happening after installing 'nvidia' package. My graphics card is gtx 570. I am logging in by typing username and password, then using startx blindfolded. After that i get to see desktop.
my problem was fixed adding nomodeset parameter

  • Windows xp pro stalls - blank screen- hardware or software problem?

    Hi Guys,
My system is about one month old and has been awesome in performance and graphics.
Suddenly it (windows xp pro) stalls after flashing the windows loading screen and it goes blank. Looks like a software problem?
I am posting on this forum because when I check cmos, no hard drives are registered.
I can't get into safe mode, can't get past the administrator/user screen because no mouse operates here and can't select icons with the keyboard.(No admin passwords were set up anyway)
Booting from CD, repair console doesn't work because it can't find any hard drive.
Reluctant to do a complete reinstall because of precious stuff on the hard drive.
Using f8, "last known good..." just gives the same blank screen.
Using floppy boot, no other drives are recognized.
If my root directory has been wiped out by a virus or something, how come it gets past post and starts to load windows? If it's merely the graphics driver or similar not loading, how come the cmos shows no hard drive?
Is this a hardware or software problem? Any help much appreciated.

    THE ANSWER !!
    Hi Guys,
I finally got to talk to the guy who set up this system and he said that it is normal for RAID drives not to show on BIOS/CMOS. 'Think of it like a vrtual drive' he said. When the black and white initialization screen shows something like: 'Nividia Stripe-healthy'...then THAT is the hard-drive.
He said that as long as Windows was getting to the loading screen, that means that the computer itself was functioning okay, so don't worry about BIOS, the problem is a file corruption in windows, or virus etc.
Also he said that when trying to use recovery console or reinstall windows, because the system can only read the RAID drives through a SCSI interface, you have to load the Nvidia SCSI drivers from floppy by pressing f6 when asked to at the bottom of the pale blue screen (from Windows cd boot), before trying to do anything with windows (or windows will just tell you it can't read the drives, as it did before with me.)
So in the end, I reinstalled windows by that method and everyting seems fine so far. YAY!
Thanks you people for being kind enough to help someone out. I really appreciate it.

  • Windows 7 Boot Issues (After Installation via Boot Camp)

    Hi All
Today I attempted to install Windows 7 x64 on my mac via boot camp.
The install went fine, and I installed the necessary drivers using my Mac OSX Install DVD.
When I restarted I could select Windows as the disc I wanted to boot into, but after selecting it, I only saw the white blinking cursor at the top left hand side of the screen for a few seconds before the computer restarted and booted into OSX.
I tried it a few more times just to make sure it wasn't a one off.
I then inserted my Windows install disc and attempted to repair startup. There were no issues detected.
I can also successfully boot into Windows 7 through VMWare Fusion in OSX, leading me to believe that there must be some thing wrong on the Mac end of booting (although I'm not familiar with the booting process in Mac, so I'm not really sure).
If anyone has any idea what's wrong, I'd really like a hand!
    Thanks

  • Doesnt boot Black/Blank screen when a cd-rom is connected - MSI x58 Platinum

    OCZ OCZ700MXSP 700W SLI/CrossFire Active PFC
    geforce 280gtx
    Windows 7 64bit
This is a build working perfectly for over a year.. well one day my mom turned off the computer when I got home it wouldn't boot I disconnected/reseated everything and was able to figure out if I didn't have my dvd drive hooked up it will boot perfectly fine. I should note that the drive shows up fine in the bios and that with a pata hard drive it will load windows fine.
I've tried 2 pata drives and 1 sata drive all working/tested in other machines .. and it stops at the same exact spot every time right after the bios and before the Windows logo would normally pop up it will just sit on a black/blank screen forever. I have never heard of a issue like this where it wasnt the ide channel going bad or the drive itself but since a harddrive on the ide channel works i assume its good.
I didnt know if i should post this in the windows 7 64bit forum or this but im leaning towards motherboard as the issue because it still freezes at same exact spot even with no hard drives connected , so I couldnt boot anything from the dvd-drive. I'm also thinking its the mobo because i had it repaired a year ago, see my old thread here
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=127312.msg958264#msg958264
Any idea's or suggestion please let me know.

A PSU acting up can cause some strange things to happen. Have you confirmed that the DVD drive is working correctly?

  • Imac G4 install boot issue: Blank screen

    Hi!
I'm trying t get archppc on an old g4 with 512 ram (the infamous iLamp). I get the cd to boot part way, but then I get a blank screen, and the computer doesn't move forward. I tried using the option that does something to the video (sorry, I forgot what it was called. I'll try getting it in a few minutes), but it did the same thing. I'm using xubuntu right now, but it's like puling a trailer with a coupe. I want just what I need: openbox, internet, terminal. So anything else is quite useless.
    Thanks a lot!

Hi! I may come  too late!
I installed Arch ppc on a Mac mini G4 a few months ago.
After udev was parsing the hooks,  had a ' black screen flash' then 'nothing' (reading my notes, I can't remember if it was a white screen, but I had that one when trying to install other systems like Debian or Crux on ppc machines when it was about communicating with  GPU).
On Arch ppc, the way through the problem was to reboot from the install cd, chrooting again, and edit yaboot.conf adding these two lines after the proper boot image :
    append="video=radeonfb"
    append="radeon.agpmode=-1"
Your GPU is most probably an ATI and should be ok with that, but check anyway.
    And don't forget to
    ybin -v
    again before rebooting!
Hope this helps someone, if not the OP.

  • Toshiba L355 Boot up Blank Screen

My laptop top boots up to a blank screen. The following lights are visible battery and power. I can hear the fan going but the screen is completely blank. I've tried taking the battery out pressing the power button etc. with it plugged in without battery all that still nothing. I have let it sit for almost a few days nothing, I'm not sure what the issue is can someone please give me a little insight. Thanks

ok, I tried to recreate the issue using my new L355 that I just picked up.  I wasn't able to get the same LEDs to light up, mine always showed AC input, Power, and Battery Charging.  When you plug in your power cable, does the AC input LED light up, and your battery light come on either amber or green?  Does the fan come on high speed?  If your AC input LED does not light, then that would indicate that either your power brick is bad, the internal jack is bad, or there is an issue with the motherboard.
I pulled the RAM out of my L355 to simulate RAM that isn't recognized.  When I did, the 3 LEDs mentioned above lit up, the screen did flicker, but did not turn on.  The CPU fan was running at high speed.
My first suggestion would be to try reseating the hard drive.  Always unplug the cord and remove the battery prior to opening any of the panels.  There is a panel on the bottom front of the laptop with 2 screws.  Unscrew those screws, and the panel will hinge open(they are capture screws, so they wont fall out).  There is a black cloth band on the hard drive caddy.  Pull back to pop the hard drive out.  Then push it back in firmly to reseat it.  Power it up and see if it comes back to life.  If not, remove the hard drive completely, and power it up.  If it comes up with the hard drive removed, then the hard drive is the issue.  If the issue remains, then put the hard drive back in, and put the cover back in place.
Next, unscrew the capture screw in the center panel.  Pull the panel off, to access the RAM.  The RAM is removed by pushing the silver tabs outward away from the RAM.  The RAM stick will hinge upward.  Remove and reseat both sticks.  Try to power it up.  If it still does not power up, then try just installing 1 RAM stick.  If that does not work, swap it out for the other stick.  This will check to see if you have an individual stick of RAM that is bad.  It's highly unlikely that they both would go bad at the same time.
If none of the above suggestions point to the issue, then the issue is internal, and would require service.

  • Satellite A300-1LT won't boot up - blank screen & no HDD activity

I had a problem, touch pad won't work.
I found on internet solution to shut down computer, take out battery, wait a little bit, and start again.
That is when my problems start.
When I placed battery back on, i turned on the laptop.
Blank screen (nothing happens), led indicators are on (except for hdd), cd drive tries to read but nothing happens, and the fan is on.
I tried everything that I could find (wait for 30 min, take battery out, start without battery, etc...) but no luck.
My lap top is Satellite A300-1lt, and I had it for 2 months.
I don't want to take it to service, unless it is really necessary, because i really need it now, I can't wait for weeks until it is returned.
Can please somebody help me out, Im desperate....
    Thanks in advantage...

Connect your notebook (with battery) to the AC power supply and leave it an hour and try to start your notebook again. If notebook starts again leave it running until the battery will be full charged again.
I hope it will work properly again. I have had similar problem with my Satellite A300-1LI and I have do this. Now notebook runs perfectly with and without AC adapter.

  • Week old laptop with Windows 8.1 giving blank screen at Startup

I have a HP Laptop. I don't know the exact model number but it has the following configuration :- Intel Core-i5 4210u
1.7Ghz Processor, Nvidia 820M GPU and 4GB RAM. It came preinstalled with Windows 8.1
Now this is my problem :-
Whenever I power-up the laptop by using the power-button, I get the Windows 8 logo and than instead of the login-screen it
gives me a black screen. Its not even a black screen, the display is exactly as it is when the laptop turned off(nothing
at all on the screen). But I know that the laptop is running because the power button and caps-lock key is illuminated.
Now I discovered that in order to get to the Login Screen, I have to manually close the lid and open it. This however does
not work everytime. How can I fix it.
Please someone help me. It is a new laptop and I can't return it because I bought t from a different country

    Hello svmpua,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you are having issues with a blank display on your new notebook. It would help to know which product you are using. For information on finding your product and model numbers click here: How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
In the meantime I would suggest going through this document for your issue: Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot.
You may also want to confirm if this is a hardware or software issue. Does the BIOS screen load properly? You can access this by repeatedly tapping F10 while the computer turns on. If this does not load properly try an external monitor to determine if it is a hardware problem. If it does load OK, you may want to try safe mode and see if the display works properly there.
Furthermore, it could be the physical connections on the display cable. Opening and closing the lid may be wiggling the cable enough to reseat the connection temporarily. You can see how to reseat that connection in the Service and Maintenance Guide. This will not void your warranty as long as you follow the directs. You can find the guide in the User Guides section of the support page for your product, which will require the exact product or model number.
You may also want to read this document about HP's Global Warranty: Global Warranty and FAQs. In short this shows you still have protection even if the unit is purchased in another country, but the coverage depends on part availability in the country you are currently located in. You can always try calling HP Phone Support, they may be able to provide service for you. You can contact HP Technical Support at 1-800-474-6836 in North America. For all other regions click here.
I look forward to your reply!

  • HT1492 windows 7 boot camp black screen after install

    Hi,
I have installed bootcamp on a 2010 white macbook with os 10.7
Windows 7 was install all the updates for apple and windows where completed. Everything was looking good and running great. This is my work computer and it has run boot camp previously on another macbook with the same specs.
When I restarted the computer to comfirm that all was good with both partitions the mac is running great, but the windows just locks on the black screen, no cursor, no windows starting.
I tried to start with the install disk in but after the black and white instruction screen the computer went back to the black screen.
I deleted the windows partition and tried to re-install but just got the black screen straight away and it will not even load.
When i did this I noticed that Parallels had been install on the computer I tried to start it and the windows 7 is asking for the install disk to be inserted and restarted to fix problems. I insert the disk and tried to restart but nothing happened again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. As i need to do school reports over the next week!
    Thanks LC

  • Windows 7 Boot Camp Black Screen?

    Hi,
I know there are a lot of topics about this around the forums, but I'm having a great deal of trouble installing Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro, and none of the solutions I have found are working for me. What's happening is I can make a new Windows 7 partition and press install, but when the computer restarts, it boots to a black/grey screen with no visible activity.  Sometimes I can get as far as "loading windows files" or something to that effect, but it always freezes on the screen with that loading bar full.  I have been trying to solve this for quite some time but no solutions have proved effective.
My specs, in case it helps:
    15-Inch, Late-2008, Macbook Pro
    Nvidia GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    10.7.2
    MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-868
I am using a retail copy of Windows 7 home premium.
Any Advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Windows 8.1 Problem - Blank Screen after Login but Cursor Works and Limited Functionality

I have a Sony Vaio All in One Touch Screen. It is running Windows 8.1 and today I can't get to the Desktop or see the normal windows Metro interface. I get a black screen and I can move the cursor around,  using various keys I can get Task Manager and
Explorer and some limited help functions up, but not the standard Windows Desktop or Metro interface.  Any thoughts?

    Hi  MrBradyBunch,
The situation you descripted should be related to a service or software conflict, as well as a hardware driver problem, to confirm this, try to boot your computer in safe mode, Safe mode Starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode
if the problem disappear, indeed, this should be caused by a service a hardware driver, you can log on in normal mode and perform a clean boot to fix this:
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
    2. Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click msconfig.
The detailed steps can be found at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the problem doesn't reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers and services as possible causes, you shoud turn to the computer vendor where you purchased the computer for harware support.

  • Satellite Pro 4030 boots with blank screen - works OK on an external monitor

My sat pro 4030, funning W98SE, boots to a blank, white screen. When I press the lid closer or use Fn/F5 it goes black. It works OK on an external monitor.

    Hi Robert,
If your display appears correctly on an external monitor then it indicates that your graohics chip is still working correctly, so you problem must lie with the LCD panel itself, the FL Inverter, or the connection cable to the main board. I would recommend that you contact an Authorised Service Partner who can carry out further tests to diagnose the fault.
