Windows 7 domain joined getting Windows 10 upgrade!!

I was building a reference image the other day for Windows 7 (we still want to use Windows 7 for "legacy" P4 machines) and it had activated itself via our KMS server and for some reason it would still show the Windows 10 Upgrade notification even though the upgrade doesn't (apparently) support KMS so it does seem there are some glitches with the update.
Also, I could understand not using WSUS in that case if its only a small collection of computers and it seems they do most work inside the XenApp server which I would hope. Although, it does sound like you have a server over there so it might be worth implementing if you ever make the move to Windows 10 as they are creating some sort of new solution that I believe is called "Windows Update for Business."

Hi,
We have several computers that are not using WSUS and are Domain Joined that are trying to upgrade to Windows 10 automatically. Luckily they are failing but it has downloaded Windows 10 into the $Windows.~BT folder.
I checked the GWX event logs and says they are Domain Joined and I know they are not suppose to get Windows 10.
I think it is to do with KB2952664 as the computers that got the Windows 10 upgrade seem to have not restarted since this re-released patch was out.
Has anyone else had this happen? I've tried search with no joy.
Even though it is failing to preform the Upgrade now we are worried that Microsoft will make a change or something will happen and the upgrade will complete...

  • Do SCCM clients need to be domain joined for Windows Patch Deployments

    Hi,
We have SCCM 2012 R2 deployed in an environment with both workgroup and domain joined machines. Currently only the domained joined machines have the SCCM client installed. We were thinking of bringing patching into SCCM rather than WSUS but were wondering
if we install the SCCM client on workgroup machines do they need to be domain mebers to work or do they just need to be able to resolve the SCCM server?BAsically, I'm looking for confimation that we can patch non-domain joined machines via SCCM.
    Thanks,
    Simon

Here's a nice blog post that adds some gotcha and additional detail:

Ultimately, ConfigMgr doesn't care if systems are domain joined or not but there are some nuances and caveats that must be accounted for.

  • Windows Domain Controller on Windows Server 2012 R2: Hyper-V roaming profiles not loading due to slow connection

I have racked my brain and done everything that I know to do for about two weeks now.  I am setting up a new system at our fire department and I am having the worst luck with getting the workstations to login to the domain controller with roaming
profiles.  It keeps telling me that the roaming profile could not be loaded because of a slow connection.  These are workstations that are connected directly to the switch that the DC is connected to.  I have tried multiple connections regarding
the layout (DC into the router, router into the switch).  The router is a Cisco RV220W.  I have two VLANS, one for public and one for private domain.  The Private VLAN has DHCP turned off since I am providing it through the DC.  I currently
have a connection from the Private VLAN going to the unmanaged switch that the workstations and server are plugged into.
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R420 that has 6 NIC ports (1 dual port and 1 quad port).  I have a virtual switch setup on Hyper-V for an external port (let's say Card 2 Port 3) that is assigned to the WS 2012R2 Domain Controller.  The DC can see
the internet fine and the workstations can connect to the shared folders on the server.  I can retrieve files by just using the computer name or FQDN.  The DC is also running DNS and DHCP.  The DNS has the _msdcs setup from when I installed
the active directory role.  I have attempted to assign static IP addresses to the workstations:
    IP:                     10.0.0.80
    Subnet:             255.255.255.0
    IPV4 Gateway:  10.0.0.1
    IPV4 DNS:        10.0.0.12
I've attempted "append the specific DNS suffix", I've "registered the connection in DNS", I've used "use this connections suffix in DNS registration".
    The server is assigned:
    IP:                     10.0.0.12
    Subnet:             255.255.255.0
    IPV4 Gateway:  10.0.0.1
    IPV4 DNS:         10.0.0.12
The DNS entries have forwarders that forward to my ISP DNS servers for lookup
I've enabled and disabled DHCP, I've installed a new VM just to create another DC to make sure that I didn't goof up when I created it.
I've lost my patience with this project and am sinking fast.  Can someone please offer some advice as to what I've done wrong?  I've created this exact scenario at work many times but, I've never done it with Windows Server 2012.  Is this
possibly something to do with the Dell PowerEdge server (Generation 12) with the SR-IOV?  I am going to attempt to work on it some more tomorrow when I get over there.  I think there may be an issue with the SR-IOV not being enabled on the machine
through the Dell Bios.  Would the SR-IOV really cause the workstations to report a slow connection?  When I login at the domain controller the roaming profiles and folder redirection work fine so, I know the GPO settings are correct.  I don't
have "ignore slow connections" or any of those GPO's set.  I need to get it working the correct way so, I didn't want to fool the server when there is another underlying problem.  Any help that someone can offer, I am more than willing
to listen.  If you need more information, please ask.
    Thanks,
    Jay

So, I've managed to research this some more since Thursday and I've come to the conclusion that Hyper-V does a horrible job of supporting Qualcomm NIC cards. That's the only thing I can conclude as far as where the issue is originating. I've read many
post and walkthroughs but nothing that has helped. The issue wasn't with any settings in the domain controller. The issue was that there really is a slow connection originating at the domain controller that is a VM and has network connectivity through the
virtual switch from Hyper-V. So, next question is, how do I get the DC to have better connectivity through the NIC that Hyper-V won't give it? If hyper-v would allow passthrough, this would be so much simpler. VM-ware is looking really good at this point.
Im disappointed in MS right now.

  • Will Windows XP still get Windows Update download?

I am thinking of wiping out an XP Home netbook and re-installing it from scratch.  I understand Microsoft is not supporting Windows XPs any more.  Will the newly re-installed Windows XP get automatic Windows update download from Microsoft of
    whatever Microsoft has already developed.

Yes, it will. As per MS : "There are no current plans to remove existing Windows XP security updates from Windows Update after end of support on April 8, 2014,"

  • ModernUI app fail to install from Intune Company Portal on Windows 8.1 Enteprise domain joined

i know that using sideloading keys are required in all scenario's whenever i want to deploy modernUI apps to windows 8.1 devices. Using a domain joined enterprise Windows 8.1 device it should be required as i've heard. However, i'm looking for the exact

    device must be domain joined enterprise version OR use sideloading keys;
    the device must be joined to the domain that is dirsynced with the Intune subscription;
    AllowAllTrustedApps reg key must be set to 1 OR configure the corresponding GPO;
    a Microsoft account is required to access the Windows Store;
    a Windows Intune subscription user account is required to enroll the device into Windows Intune;
    the modernUI (demo) app must be visible in the company portal;
    app must be signed and the device must trust the corresponding cert OR use a developer sideloading key: Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration;
does someone have a good overview of all requirements in relation to deploying modernUI apps?
I find it very confusing when to determine which requirements apply. thanks in advance!

If you have a domain joined Windows 8.x Enterprise workstation, you do not need the sideloading keys. You only need sideloading keys for Windows 8 Pro, RT etc.
It will install as long as:
    Domain joined
AllowAllTrustedApps - GPO or Local Policy enabled
    Signed by a trusted certificate

Why wont itunes download on my laptop running on windows vista, keep getting Windows error127, can anyone help please this is driving me insane, tried 9 times already without
    success.

Uninstall your existing copy of iTunes. Delete any copies of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer files from your downloads areas for your web browsers and download a fresh copy of the iTunes installer from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
(The current build of the 11.1.4.62 installer was changed a few days ago, which fixed the bulk of the reports of MSVCR80.dll/R6034/APSDaemon.exe/Error-7/AMDS-could-not-start trouble ... but the build number on the installer was not changed. So we're trying to make sure you do the reinstall using a "new good" 11.1.4.62 installer instead of an "old bad".)
Does the install with the new copy of the installer go through properly? If so, does that clear up the error message?
If you still have the same error messages cropping up, then try the procedures from the following user tip:

You need to read the announcement. There will be additional releases coming

  • Sideloading not working on domain joined enterprise devices

    Hi,
I wanted to know if sideloading has any limitations that an OMA DM agent that it won't be able to install an app through sideloading if the tablet is domain joined?
We are seeing this on enterprise edition tablets which are domain joined and enrolled to the an MDM (mobile device management) server that the OMA DM agent cannot install a sideloaded app.
    We'd highly appreciate some pointers.
    Thanks,
    D

    Hi,
Sorry for my dilatory reply. According to the following description:
Windows 8.1 supports three types of user accounts on a device: Local Accounts, Microsoft Accounts and
Domain Joined Accounts. The OMA-DM agent is disabled when a device is domain joined which means
the management service cannot set password policy for a domain joined account. Windows 8.1 RT and
Windows 8.1 Home SKUs cannot be domain joined.
It seems like OMA-DM agent doesn't support domain joined of Windows 8.1 device.

  • Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."

    Hi,
Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."
    DC:windows Server 2008 R2
    Domain functional level:Windows Server 2003
When Winxp join domain, have no this error message.
    I checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2018583?wa=wsignin1.0 does't work.
There have 3 suggestion in this article:
1.The "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox has been disabled in the IPv4 properties of the computer being joined.
    Doesnt's work.
2.Connectivity over UDP port 137 is blocked between client and the helper DC servicing the join operation in the target domain.
On my DC, I run netstat -an, reslut as below:
     UDP    192.168.20.3:137       *:*
3.The TCP/IPv4 protocol has been disabled so that the client being joined or the DC in the destination domain targeted by the LDAP BIND is running TCP/IPv6 only.
    We are not using IPV6.
This server recently updated from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Before upgrade, when Win7 and Win2008 join this domain, also have the same error message.
Please help to check this issue.
    Thank you very much.

    Guo YingHui

    Hi Guo Ying,
I have faced this critical error which makes over-writes the host names in the domain when you join.
For example: Already you had a host name called as PC.domain.com in the domain.com Domain.
When you try to add the another host name called as PC in the domain.com Domain, it doesn't give you the duplicate name error on the network it does over-write the existing host name called as PC.domain.com & it will add the new host name into the domain.
Host name which got over-written will get removed from the domain. I faced this issue in my project. My DPM host name got removed from the Domain & new host name got joined into the domain which halted my backups for one day.
    Final Resolution is as follows:
You need to start the dns console on the DC & drop down the domain name.
Select the _msdcs when you click on _msdcs it will show the Name Server's list on the right hand side.
You need to add the Domain Naming Master under the _msdcs or add all the domain controllers which you had.
After you add the Name server's try joining the PC OR Laptop to the domain which is successfully joins it.

  • ¿Is it possible to upgrade from SCCM 2012 a domain controller in Windows Server 2008 R2 TO 2012 R2?

    Hi all.
I want to know if is it possible to upgrade a domain controller from Windows Server 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 installing from SCCM 2012.

    Hi all.
I want to know if is it possible to upgrade a domain controller from Windows Server 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 installing from SCCM 2012.
    Thanks.
    Regards.
Anything is possible if you can script it. You could create a task sequence to do the following (with scripts):
    1. Demote 2008R2 DC to member server
    2. Remove 2008R2 member server from domain
    3. Build new 2012R2 member server and join to domain
    4. Promote 2012R2 member server to DC
You can do this. However, why would you? Just because you can doesn't mean you should. In my opinion it's more trouble and testing than it's worth. How many times would you need to do this?

drives are mounted at log in? Thanks in advance!
Yes. The server does not have to be running Services for Macintosh.
If the server is running Active Directory, you'll have to work with the windows admin people to create the AD account.
Otherwise, you'll just hae access to the shares.
On the Mac, I think the AD options are under Directory Services.
To map drives at login, the easiest way is to write an Applescript, save it as an application, and add it as a login item.
I can't recall the exacy syntax, but for each drive, the script should look something like this:
    Tell Application "finder"
    try
    mount "smb:\\windows.server.ip.address\sharename"
    end try
You will get a user id/pw/domain prompt for each share.
For e-mail, assuming they use Exchange, you'll need exchange server 2000 SP 2 or higher with OWA, IMAP, and LDAP active on the mail server to be able to access mail through Entourage or Apple mail.
Otherwise, you'll be limited to Outlook Web Access.
Printing: Standard IP,LPR, or appletalk printer setup.

  • What benefits are there to joining a Windows domain?

My company has one mac user with a Macbook Air, we have a Windows 2008 r2 domain.
I'm wondering if it is worth joining him to the domain, what benefits are there for a mac user?
We use Exchange 2007 and change our passwords every 90 days.
One concern is when the user is out of the office the cached password can become out of sync with the domain passowrd.
This is an anoyance and can be confusing.
Any advice would be much appriciated.
    Thanks.

    Greetings.
I am a 1 of 2 Mac users in a company that otherwise is using Windoz. I do not join the domain though, because I really see no reason to. I can get to the printers, to the web, to the Exchange and to the SharePoint. Though mostly I need SVN and cloud services anyway.
Thus no real reason. Unless there is some specific stuff that is setup on the network that is only available to windows machines authenticated with a certificate and joined to the windows domain, like for instance a split tunnel VPN or something along those lines, there is really no need to be "on the domain" connected to the LAN works just fine if not better.
    HOWEVER
There is that annoying bit about the passwords.
Some sysadmins like to setup password expiration, thus forcing us mortals to rotate three (almost identical) passwords every three months. In this case you just need to setup a reminder on your calendar that prompts you a week in advance to change your password.
How to change your password? You have options:
    OPTION 1
Now. If your Mac has OS pre Lion (no higher then 10.6) then you have old samba installed by default and that comes with "smbpasswd" command. To change the password just open the mighty mac terminal and type:
    smbpasswd -r YOUR_WINDOWS_DOMAIN_CONTROLLER_IP -U username
Then the output will be something like this:
    Old SMB password: ********
    New SMB password: *********
    Retype new SMB password: *********
    Password changed for user username
Of cause replace the YOUR_WINDOWS_DOMAIN_CONTROLLER_IP with the IP of your domain controller. Do not know your domain controller IP? run Google "net lookup master" command. I think older macs have it. (not sure)
if you are running Lion, you do not have smbpasswd command. I think Apple either wrote their implimentation of samba or just use some stripped down wersion of it, not sure. It has to do with some dreary and borring licensing thing.
You can either install samba yourself form sources... Thus if you are brave and adventurous here is a walk through http://forums.sonos.com/showthread.php?t=24022 or you can use optopn two:
    OPTION 2
If your company has not gone to the cloud hosting and still use the old-school home grown Exchange hosted in the broom closet, you might have a web version of the M$ Exchange running. The URLs usually something like: https://owa.yourcompanyname.com. If you have that then the sysadmins may have the password change feature enabled there. Login to your web interface for Outlook (OWA), In the top right corner choose the "Change Password" feature and use it.
If this is not an option because either your sysadmin is not running OWA or the password change feature is not enabled you have still have options.
    OPTION 3:
If you are working for a company that loves Windows and their products you might have an M$ Office installed on your Mac. Thus you might have Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) utility. If not you can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/remote-desktop-client. Then remote desktop to a machine in your office and you will get to it's login screen where you can change the windows domain password. (This requires a machine to which you can remote desktop)
    OPTION 4:
Walk up to any Windowz box that no one is using, CTRL + ALT + DEL one time and this will give you the login screen, you can change password form there.
    OPTION 5:
Ask your sysadmin to setup your password to never expire, or add the policy for your user so that you can change it in OWA (see option 2)
