Windows 7 Keyboard locked after selecting Virual keyboard

After selecting virutal keyboard display, keyboard no longer working on laptop or external keyboard.  Tried rebooting, removing battery, but the only the virtual keyboard works.  Can someone provide suggestion as to how I can resolve.  Fingers
are getting very tired of pecking one key at a time.  The good news is that I was able to use my keyboard to key up this question.

Hi vdemmaj,
Have you tried the solution mentioned by S.Sengupta?
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting.
1. Disable the on-screen keyboard and then check if the external keyboard could work.
2. Contact the laptop manufacturer to see if there are some options to disable the external keyboard inputs.
3. Check if the keyboard driver is the latest version.
Hope it will be helpful.

  • Windows 7 desktop locks after 10 minutes idle - Policy setting?

Is there a policy setting to lock the desktop after a certain amount of idle time?  I can't seem to find one, and searches on the web only seem to uncover lock up issues with software, rather than security policy settings.
Right now our Win 7 desktops lock after 10 minutes of inactivity (set by old IT staffer who is no longer here).  This is way too short and we need to change it.  However, I can't find where the setting is.  The screensaver is disabled and the power settings are set to maximum.  The only policy setting that looks like it could be what I'm looking for is "Microsoft network server: Amount of idle time required before suspending session", but that wasn't set to 10.  I went and set it to 0 anyway and the desktop still locks after 10 mins.
Can someone point me in the right direction for this setting?
    Thanks!

When you leave your computer, it’s best to start a screensaver that can only be turned off with a password.
On the Start menu, click Control
    Panel.
Click Personalization, and then click Screen
    Saver.
In the Wait box, choose 15 minutes
    (or less)
Click On resume, display logon screen, and then click OK.
just try reverse , it may work !!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • Windows 8 automatically locks after 1 minute of inactivity

I read on here that the solution to this issue is to reset the security options under User Accounts.  I don't seem to have that capability.  Is there another fix for this?  Or a way I can add that option under User Accounts?  I set a
bunch of other settings to a high number and that seemed to fix the issue for a day.  Then today the issue came back in full effect even though none of my settings had changed.  This is extremely frustrating.  Thanks for any help you can provide.
UPDATE: I just wanted to post that after I did the Windows 8.1 Update, this issue went away finally.  Thank god.

Thank you for the quick reply but as I stated in my original post, I don't have a reset security options under my user accounts.  And I haven't found anything that explains why some people have this option and others don't.
Your second solution also doesn't work.  There currently isn't a password required for wake up already.  The problem is the lock itself.  I have programs that are running in the background that get put to sleep every time the computer locks.
Thanks for trying.  Any other suggestions?

I cannot get this imac to save selected newtwork preference (tried apply and locking the selection to no avail).  My other imac maintains the selection without a problem using the same airport.  The connection works immediately after re-selecting the network from a list of "neighborhood" networks that I have never used.  But once I "sleep" the mac, the dialog states:  no network selected.

  • Windows 7 locking after 1 minute

OK, so starting off, i have read over all of the other posts and have found none of them work.
My computer locks after 1 minute, this started today, i have not changed any settings, nor have I recently as I have had this computer for a while.  I have looked at all of the settings and i have all of the sleep/hibernation functions turned off.
I have the "lock screen on wake up" function also turned off.  I do however have it set to dim, and then turn off the display after 1 minute, but this has nothing to do with the sleep function.  It does not dim the display before locking, only after,
as if it wasnt locked, please give me anything you can to help as this randomness is very irritating.

I don't think Arthur Xie's response should be marked as the answer.  This doesn't sound like it has any relevance to Craig's original question, and hasn't been corroborated by anyone.  It threw me off the scent when I encountered the exact same
problem - Windows 7 locking me out after 1 minute and requiring password re-entry
It turns out that Ramesh's answer was the one that worked for me.  Somehow my machine got set to wait 1 minute and "on resume, display logon screen" was ticked.  Don't know how this happened.
I initially missed this, because the selected screensaver was "(none)", so I assumed all the settings on this page were irrelevant.  It does raise the interesting usability point that a screen saver of "(none)" can still blank the screen, even
though the user hasn't purposely selected the "Blank" screensaver.

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

    Hi,
Did this issue occur on all computers which installed that update?
In generally, it's not most likely be Windows update cause.
    Let's narrow down the issue:
Have you tried to reset the Internet Explorer to check the result:
1.Close all Internet Explorer windows that are currently open.
2.Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar. Changing your settings will affect both Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer for the desktop.
3.Tap or click the Tools button, and then tap or click
    Internet options.
4.Tap or Click the Advanced tab, and then tap or click
    Reset.
5.In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, tap or click Reset.
6.When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, tap or click
Close, and then tap or click OK. You'll need to restart your PC for these changes to take effect.
If it persists, perform a clean boot to see if it caused by some third-party software:

  • Windows boot manager boots almost fully into windows 8 before letting me select windows 7, at which point it reboots my computer

    Hi,
I haven't used my slow HDD with windows 7 on it in a while, but today my SDD with windows 8 on it died. I have kept my old OS in a dual boot setup exactly for this rare possibility. I in fact successfully revived my SSD from windows 7.
During the restore procedure I had to boot into both OSes (7 and 8) several times before I managed to get 8 working. I tried a lot of things before one of them struck. (Is that how the phrase goes?
Me Hungary, no good speak English some times...) I am surprised to have found the following unexpected behavior of the new windows 8 branded boot loader:
The new windows boot manager boots almost fully into windows 8 before letting me select an OS.
If I select windows 7, it reboots my computer and loads windows 7, wasting a lot of time... on the windows 8 portion of the boot process, which is simply thrown away if I happen need windows 7 and not 8.
"This is highly inefficient!" — I almost exclaimed aloud... A boot manager should load just enough of itself so that a simple OS selection menu can be presented to the user with minimal keyboard interaction. Only when a selection is made should
it load an OS. I have no use for the new boot manager's mouse control support, and having it appear on the second screen in my dual screen setup is just plain scary. Use the main laptop monitor where the BIOS messages were displaying, and keep the secondary
off until the OS is done booting! By the time my secondary screen turns on, the boot selection menu disappears anyway.
Yes, I only noticed this problem now because I haven't booted into windows 7 for a long time. (300 MB worth of Windows updates were waiting for me indeed.) My boot selection menu timeout is set to 3 seconds instead of 30 so I don't have to pick windows 8
    every time.
I am going to wait at least a week for the forum's input before I switch on my own to a faster, minimalist boot manager. I don't know what to use, I'm familiar with:
    some minimalist bootstrap loaders
    coreboot/linuxbios (recently learned of it)
    bootcamp (not really)
acronis OS selector (discontinued before windows 8 came out, probably doesn't support it)
    syslinux/isolinux (Linux only, I think)
    old Windows bootmgr
    more recent Windows ntldr
then this new "inefficient for dual booting" Windows 8 boot manager
    and finally grub
Grub feels like the best option as it keeps the windows boot manager intact and supports mac, windows, and linux. All 3 of which will at one point — or has already — come up as a subject or prerequisite in my university.
I don't know how or why I was able to access windows 8's boot loader while my SSD was dead. Was it installed on the HDD, overwriting the windows 7 boot loader? That too is inefficient. I want to completely boot from my SSD. Don't spin up my HDD while I'm
booting my laptop on the go! The shaking of the vehicle I'm in could seriously damage the disk if I run into a pothole (common in my country) with just the right timing, data could be damaged. The entire reason windows 8 is on an SSD is so that it can boot
without accessing my HDD with all its moving parts. My goal with buying an SSD was for the HDD to remain safely offline while I'm in a shaky environment with potholes! Also, what if I want to disconnect the old HDD in the future... Or what if it dies? Will
the windows 8 boot loader die with windows 7? I want the two kept separately and completely independent from each other for exactly this reason.
    In summary:
How can I stop windows 8 from almost fully booting before offering the dual boot OS selection menu? Do I need a better Boot loader?
Why was the boot loader that came with windows 8 still working OK while the SSD with windows 8 on it wasn't accessible? Did it sneak its way onto the old HDD? I want a 100% SSD-based boot process. What is the boot loader doing on a different drive? Its
place is on the SSD, with the operating system it belongs to. Not on the HDD of a different OS. Can I move it?
    Sincerely,
    Daniel "3ICE" Berezvai
p.s.: For windows 7 I only have a repair disk and hidden RECOVERY partition which I kept (came with the laptop, would rather not use it.) The Windows 8 pro DVD (purchased last year) is fine, but I had it moved to a bootable pendrive so I could remove my
optical drive and replace it with an SSD on which windows 8 is installed now. (I also have a vista ultimate DVD, as they were giving them away for free on a Microsoft conference. Funny story.)

    Hi,
    Thank you for your post.
From your description, I see the issue you are facing is there is no menu to choose OS when booting dual boot(Windows 7 & Windows 8). Please let me know if I have misunderstood anything.
It seems that the Windows 7 entry is missing, currently, we can use a tool –
EasyBCD to get it back. After downloading it, choose the Add/Edit panel item, select the OS you're missing and let the program detect it. Then simply click the Add button to add the missing OS entry.
At the meantime, here is a related link which demonstrates how to keep Windows 7 as the default OS in dual boot, you may use it for a reference.

  • After selecting system preferences it results in error compatible modus

After selecting several optiona in system preferences i.e. Time-Machine, iCloud and MessageCenter I get an error "In order to use preferences "Messaging", you must close and then open System Preferences".
It seems that this is cuased by compatibility mode, the Help-window is showing :
Open System Preferences in compatibility mode
Some preference panels make use of older technologies, which must be closed System Preferences and then to be opened in a mode that is compatible with the older technologies.
If you have a preference pane that is not suitable for 64-bit computers, open System Preferences in 32-bit mode. When you exit System Preferences and then open it again, again the 64-bit mode.
But closing and opening does not solve this problem and I'm not able to change any of those options.
Can somebody tell me how this can be solved?

The program was marked as "Open in 32-bits mode", due to remark of mjmatty who had a similar issue and changed the mode into 64-bits it is working.
    Instructions
1 Click the “Finder” icon on the dock at the bottom of your screen.
2 Select “Applications” at the left side of the Finder window.
    3 Select System Preferences
4 Press and hold the “Control” key on your keyboard and click the “System Preferences” icon.
5 Click “Get Info” in the menu that appears.
6 Click the “Open in 32-bit Mode” check box, so it is unchecked
7 Close the System Preference Info window.
    Thanks mjmatty
