Windows 7 Professional isn't loading on my laptop

Hello, I have an HP Elitebook 8540w laptop with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on it. Few days ago I updated few programs which my laptop showed that they need to be updated. On the next day I started my laptop but it just didn’t want to load the Windows. I am not very competent when it comes to computers and operating systems, but I am very good in following instructions. So I will describe the problem and what I do, in details and with screenshots, and I hope some of you can help me.
Here’s what’s happening:
I press the power button, a screen with the HP logo appears and then a black screen with the usual message 'Starting Windows', but without Windows logo over it. Here’s a screenshot:
It stays like this for few minutes then Windows Error Recovery appears:
Then Startup Repair starts to load and try to repair the Windows, but it fails and shows this message:
If I click on 'View problem details' this is what it shows:
If I close this window and click on “View diagnostic and repair details” this is what it shows:
What I notice here is the line: 'Windows directory = D:\Windows', but my Windows is installed on local disk C. I don’t know if this is how it’s supposed to look like.
Then I close this diagnostic window and click on 'View advanced options for system recovery and support'
I chose a language and login to my user account with my password and it leads me to 'System Recovery Options'.
Here I notice again the line: 'Operating system: Windows 7 on (D Local Disk', but like I’ve said my Windows is on Local Disk C.
The first option - Startup Repair – obviously doesn’t work since I have already tried it, so I choose the second one – 'System Restore'. First it shows me a window box telling me what System Restore does, I click 'Next' and then it brings me to a window where I chose the restore point:
There is only one restore point. If I click on the 'Scan for affected programs' button it shows me these programs:
I remember that these were the programs that I updated the day before my windows crushed. And if I remember correctly, the message that I need to update these programs came from Avast antivirus. I don’t know why though…
Anyway, so I chose the restore point and click on 'Next' and then it brings this message:
I click on 'Finish' and a message saying 'Once started, System Restore cannot be interrupted. Do you want to continue?' appears. I click on 'Yes' and System Restore starts.
It loads for a few minutes and then shows a message saying that it didn’t complete successfully:
When I run the command chkdsk /R in the Command Prompt window this is the message I get:
I also tried entering Windows in Safe Mode, but it also doesn’t load.
I don’t know what to do. I really need my laptop since I work with it. I work as a freelancer and I have very important information on my Local disk D. I am backing up my most important folder on an external hard drive but there has been some time since my last back up and a lot of files aren’t backed up.

Hi:
The only suggestion I can offer would be to get to that command prompt repair option again, and see if any of the info at the link below is of help to you:

  • ITunes 11.2.0115 does not load/work with Windows 7 Professional. What is wrong?

Hi Folks!!! Please if you can help me: after the upgrade to the last iTunes 11.2.0115 Version (Windows 7 Professional PC Operational System), I've received, all the  times I've tried load it,  the warning message: "iTunes has stopped to work"...What is happening? Please, can anyone help me? I can't access iTunes to the syncronizing of my iPod Classic 160Gb 7th generation. All the way, thank's a lot. Mª Paula.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

I'd like to have a closer look at that error message please.
Generate the error message again. While the error message box is open, hold down the Alt key and hit the PrtSc key. Paste the screenshot into an image file (using a program like Paint), and save the file.
Start a reply here and click the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window. Click "Choose file", browse to the image file, select the file and click "Open". Now click "Insert file" to insert the screenshot into the reply.

  • Lion Bootcamp won't install Windows 7 Professional

I have a fresh install of Lion on my iMac and have been trying to install Windows 7 Professional using Bootcamp 4.0.  Here's what I've done.
    1) Loaded bootcamp and followed the instructions to partition the drive.  Split the 500GB drive so the Mac would have approximately 300GB and Win7 would have 200GB.  Then bootcamp asked me to insert my Win7 disk which I did and click "Install now".  I did so and it rebooted.  Upon rebooting my iMac says "No bootable device.  Insert boot disk and press any key".  However, the Win7 install disk is already in the drive.
After reading on forums I've tried the following but still to no avail.
    2) I reboot the computer while holding down the "C" key.  Occassionally when I do this the Installation will start and I make it to the Windows activation screen where it asks where I want to install the OS.  I select "advanced" and go ahead and select "format" the Bootcamp drive and it takes about 10 seconds to format.  Then I proceed with the install.  It comes to the screen where it says "Expanding Windows Activated Files" and it shows a 0% and just hangs there.  On one occasion when I was in the beginning stages of the install program it stopped and asked me to insert a disk to install a driver for the disk drive.  From what I can tell it's like the mac isn't finding and reading the DVD files properly.  And sometimes it works for a while and but after a bit it just craps out.  Before Lion I had Snow Lepoard and using Bootcamp 3.2 i was able to install Win7 with no problems.
    3) One last thing.  So after messing with Lion I became frustrated and thought I'm just going to go back to SL.  So I pulled out my SL disk and went ahead and did a full SL install.  However, when I went into Bootcamp (v3.2 or whatever version comes with SL) it would not allow me to partition my Hard drive. Some error comes up and I can't remember exactly what the error said.  But after doing more research on the web I found the problem.  It's that Lion installs another hidden partition on my drive which I can't seem to remove.  Even when I used disk utilities and formatted the drive before installing SL the hidden Lion recovery partition is still there.  So now I can't seem to go back to a clean install of SL to get bootcamp and Win7 working again.
Any help here is much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Steven

Does fdisk work? Something like 'sudo fdisk -a hfs'? Or maybe 'fdisk -i' first. You see, I'm guessing here.
If you get the unmount error: would 'umount -Af' from USB work? You probably tried that already.
If this all fails, the next step _I_ would take, would be plugging the disk into a Linux box nearby and check the disk there.

  • Lenovo g550 windows xp drivers will not load

Help!  I purchased a Lenovo G550 yesterday and am in need of assistance.  Unfortuantely it doesn't appear that there is any way to contact Lenovo, the website doesn't show any method of even emailing them without an IBM service tag (which unless you are corporate user you can't get).
I purchased a lenovo g550 yesterday configuration is 3gb ram 160Gb HDD.  Upon booting the system I discovered that in fact users only get access to about 100Gb of the harddrive the rest is set up under multiple hidden drives.  I the system came with windows 7 home edition.  I need windows xp.  So through several hours of work I was able to create some unallocated space on the harddrive.  I loaded my copy of windows xp professional to this space and since windows automatically selects the drive name it is drive D:
I went to the lenovo website prior to loading xp and manually downloaded every driver from the site (very time consuming, I saw another way via a forum but was not able to locate it on the lenovo website).  Immendiately after loading xp and rebooting I loaded the intel chipset driver.  Then rebooted.  No other drivers will load for any of the other pieces of hardware.  All of THEM, everyone crashes with an error message that there is not enough disk space on c: to load.  I would guess that there isn't since c: is a 200mb hidden drive created by Lenovo.
Does anyone have a work around for this problem with the lenovo drivers?  This has turned into a multi-hour project for something very simple - putting an alternative operating system on the computer.  I cannot put xp as the c: drive because of the lenovo hidden partition is named c:.  I don't want to delete windows 7, as I expect to move to it in the next year but right now I several thousand dollars worth of software in xp and need to use that software.
I sure would appreciate any assistance :-)  Again the issue is the lenovo windows xp drivers, everyone of them excluding the intel chipset driver will not load under windows xp when windows xp is loaded onto the d: partition.  they all say they want to load onto the c: parition which is not an option.
thanks in advance for any help and if anyone knows how to get in contact with lenovo would love that also.

Well if you do not want win7 all together, then just delete all the partitions and install your XP. But if your not wanting to mess up this drive to be able to use the win7 later then just buy a cheap HDD to put XP on. --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148452 $10 off and free shipping. but being that you already tried installing XP then you already messed up win7 anyways(if you did not make the restore disks), your better off just deleting and redoing XP.

  • I have been unable to install hp dj1280 in windows 7 professional workgroup networked printer

Hi . I am using a hpdeskjet 1280 printer connected to a windows xp computer . I cannot get my new laptop running windows 7 professional to print via the network. I cannot find a driver. Hp says driver is included with windows 7 (it's not). I can locate the printer running windows add printer but after checking windows update i get message" No driver found. Windows can't find a driver for HP Deskjet 1280 on the network. To locate one manually, click OK. Otherwise, click Cancel and consult your network administrator or the printer manufacturer's website."
I have tried the HPHND utility from HP but this program does not list any of my networked printers.
    Please help.

The following based on 8 hours (and counting) of frustration, attempting to teach varying levels of HP technical support people about NetBIOS.
So far, I've found nearly a dozen posts from frustrated HP OfficeJet users, using the search words NETBIOS or WORKGROUP.
We just bought an OfficeJet 8600 Premium All-In-One.
The provided installation software doesn't reach a point where the driver (icon) is installed on any of our Windows 7 PCs' Control Panel / Printers and Devices.
After several installs, reboots, uninstalls, disabling PC and router-based firewalling, loading Windows 'dry' (without any startup drivers), we have isolated the issue to HP's lack of providing a means to manually configure a NetBIOS Group.
This appears to be the reason the installation software for the OfficeJet 8600 is unable to 'find' the printer on a peer-to-peer network, yet alone install the required drivers on any PC, if:
     - there isn't a DHCP server;
     - if assignment of IP addresses for network devices is performed manualy, or
     - if your peer-to-peer network's NetBIOS Group / Workgroup name is anything other than "MSHOME"
This last item appears to be a hard-wired configuration on every HP OfficeJet.
Apparently this has caused HP some consternation, given the appearance of HP's "Update IP Address" tool.
Even though an OfficeJet printer can be assigned a static IP address and successfully 'pinged' ... even though command line utilities (below) clearly show the printer existing on the network ... the printer cannot be "located" by HP's software installation routine or its provided Update IP Address tool, as HP's hard-wired NetBIOS Group / Workgroup name does not match the Workgroup name our firm uses.
Having a manufacturer decree that users must change the configuration of every device on their network to accommodate use of its product is unacceptable.
This is a relatively easy fix, HP.

  • Installing Windows XP professional and F6 (3rd party SATA drivers)

Forgive me if this is answered somewhere. I found a posting that was close but not quite the same, or maybe it is. This is  my first system I have put together so please excuse the newby status.  I am Using the K8T Neo2  motherboard (Via Tech VT8237 SATA) and the AMD 64 bit 3500+ chip. I have hooked up 2 Seagate 120 Gb  Serial ATA hard drives. Also have a Sony DVD r/w drive and a 3.5 " floppy and they all seem to show up in the setup menu.
When I try to install the operating system (Windows XP professional) and the bottom  of the screen says, press F6  for third party SATA drivers I press F6 and it does nothing but continue to load windows files up to the point when it does not recognize a hard drive and I have to exit with F3. Can anyone help???????? What is the possible reason hitting F6 does nothing, I have rebooted and tried several times. I cannot get to the point to choose the third party SATA driver. This is getting very frustrating...... Any help would be great. Thanks.

Hm...this is kind of a longshot, but you're not using the "Logitech Elite" keyboard ( http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=23-126-114&depa=0 ), are you?  This keyboard has an annoying feature called the "F-Lock" because Logitech decided to apply custom functions to the various F-buttons (an okay idea in and of itself), and then foolishly decided to set the custom functions as being the default behavior of the buttons, so that the only way pressing "F6" actually causes the F6 keystroke to be sent is if the F-lock is enabled (which is extremely stupid...the keys should send the normal F-commands with the lock off, and having the lock on should enable the custom commands).  If you have this keyboard, then just enable the F-lock and try again and it should work.
...if you have some other keyboard, then the above suggestions are good...always mash the hell out of F-buttons, and if it's a USB keyboard that isn't working right, try a PS2 keyboard.  You might also be able to affect things by enabling "USB Legacy" support in the BIOS, though take note that having this enabled may cause your system to become unbootable (until the setting is turned back off).

  • Why is 64 bit Windows 7 Professional running so slow on my new 2011 15" Macbook Pro?

I installed 64 bit Windows 7 Professional onto my new 2011 15" Macbook Pro and while the Mac partition runs fine, everything about the Windows partition seems to be slow.  There's hangups, random loading icons for processes that shouldn't require any work at all (even browsing through Windows Explorer will do this from time to time).  I don't undertand why this is happening, I thought running 64 bit would unleash the full power of my new Mac.  Should I just wipe it and do a clean install of Windows 7 32 bit instead?  I've never had issues/compatibility problems with installations of 32 bit Windows.

Well if you just installed it, then perhaps it's not validated yet and when it does there will be Windows Updates to increase the performance.
I'm sure you followed all the Bootcamp instructions about installing the Apple drivers and all that.
The only thing I can suggest is you reinstall it again after a few days and all the Windows Updates applied if it speeds up or not. Keep hitting it over and over. Make sure you have the free Microsoft Security Essentials installed or you'll get pwned really fast.
Also you have to remember that when Bootcamp carves out a Windows partition it's doing so at the bottom slowest part of your hard drive, the innermost sectors which are much smaller than the sectors OS X uses, therefore Windows will always be a bit slower than OS X, and there really isn't anything you can do about it unless you had a SSD.
I don't think you can install 32 bit Windows, even though it may run, it's only going to use half the registers of your 64bit processors.
Windows 7 64 bit runs fine in my virtual machine, I even get over 45 fps on Cube 2 Sauerbraten, but of course it's a rather light 3D game.
If you got the 2.0 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro, that could explain things, it's has a rather weak video card.

  • Can I install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on Windows 2000 Professional

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have Windows 2000 professional edition loaded on my PC and I'm not sure what it allows. Can I load Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition of the database on this operating system, or do I need to load windows 2000 server software.
    Thanks
    Ryan

Its a problem with oracle and pentium 4 processors actually. The solution involves renaming or deleting the symcjit.dll in the 8i installation package after you've copied the whole Cd onto your HDD!
I've tried this and it install OK, with a few errors along the way, now I can't get the apache server working, nor on the 9i AS that I've installed as well. Let me know if you get anything useful please?

Not a solution yet, but received the following from one of the tech people I've been e-mailing back & forth with.
"I'm sorry that you have been unable to submit your podcast. The podcast submission form is currently offline. When trying to submit the podcast you will receive this message "We are Currently Experienced Technical Difficulties". Once the issue has been resolved, I would be glad to inform you.
Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available."
Who knows, maybe the problem isn't with my feed after all.

  • I bought  an iPad 3 yesterday; this is an upgrade from the original iPad. I was told that migrating the data would be simple. My desktop is a PC with Windows 7 Professional. I can't find a way to back up my old iPad so I can restore the data to the new

I bought an update to the original iPad an iPad 3. In was told that migrating the data from my old iPad to the new will be a snap. Alas, it isn't. My desktop is a new high end PC that came preloaded with Windows 7 Professional and I have had nothing but problems. My earlier computer was XP and everything, including my Apple interface, in particular iTunes, worked without problems. When I was trying to back up my data from the old iPad to my desktop, the only thing it would do is synchronize, then got an error message to download the latest iTunes, which I did but it still did not work. I have a lot of music both purchased through iTunes and a lot of others which were CDs that were copied to the desktop. I also have a lot of books through Kindle and other books in iBooks and audio books from other sources, plus two iPods I want to sync. I need some advise on where I find the back up feature in iTunes so I can copy all the data on from my old iPad. Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

  • Problems after installing Windows 7 Professional on Thinkpad T61

I have an old T61 that had Windows Vista installed. I wanted to use Windows 7 but didn't want to wipe out what I already had (for various reasons). So I bought a new disk drive and did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. The disk drive is a Western Digital Blue Notebook 1TB drive. After installing the drive in the machine, I followed these instructions to install Windows 7: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74108. I chose to partition the drive into a C: drive (500GB) and a D: drive (431GB). After the install completed, I downloaded all the available Microsoft fixes (this took some time to complete).
For the Device Driver and Application install, I used the ThinkVantage System Update option. The site indicated that Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 with Service Pack 1 or later was required. I downloaded and installed version 4. There were additional Microsoft fixes for version 4, which I downloaded and installed also. Then I downloaded and installed ThinkVantage System Update 5.03. I then executed System Update and selected all the available updates. They all installed, except for Windows 7 Update Module KB2615763 64bit. This update, after failing, gave the option to install manually but when I click on that option I receive a pop up saying: Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247. The title of the pop up says Windows Update Standalone Installer.
I then attempted to install various applications on the machine: FileZilla FTP Client, Google Chrome, Notepad++, PrimoPDF were all installed without problems. When I installed a Cisco VPN Client for 64 bit machines, however, I was knocked off the network. Clicking on the WiFi symbol in the task bar showed that I had only limited connectivity to the network. I tried to do a IPCONFIG /ALL  and neither the WiFi adapter nor the Ethernet LAN adapter showed up in the list. I uninstalled the VPN Client, from the Control Panel, and was immediately able to connect to the network. An IPCONFIG /ALL now showed all the network adapters. I installed/uninstalled the VPN Client several times just to make sure that it was causing the problem of no network connectivity.
I fgured that there might be updated network adapter drivers available to resolve the problem so I attempted both System Update and Windows Update again. System Update showed nothing available, except Windows 7 Update Module KB2615763 64bit. Windows Update had a message saying "Check for updates for your computer" but when I clicked on "Check for updates" it popped up a message saying "Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your machine." I checked and the Windows Update service is running. I stopped and restarted it but received the same message when I tried to check for updates again. I rebooted the machine and tried Windows Update again. Same pop up message.
I tried the "Fix problems with Windows Update" option in the Control Panel but received a message saying - An error occurred while troubleshooting: A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting. The error details say:
    Package ID: WindowsUpdateDiagnostic
    Path: Unknown
    Error Code: 0x8E5E0247
    Source: Engine
I tried some of the other troubleshooting options and they all give similar errors - An error occurred while troubleshooting: A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting.
I then thought it might be a disk drive problem so I tried to do a CHKDSK /F but when the machine reboots the CHKDSK seems to start (there is a message that says it can be interrupted by pressing a key within 10 seconds) then, before the 10 seconds are up, it ends without checking the disk and the machine continues to boot up.
Has anyone seen any of these problems before? Did I miss something? Could this be related to the disk drive? Or missing device drivers? Bios?
Any help with this will be appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

A laptop drive that size is almost certainly an AF drive.  You can check by looking up the model's specs on the vendor's site. You can also use the fsutil command to check the drive's physical sector size and verify that the size isn't getting reported correctly - which is what usually causes the update problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018
Expand the "Issue 6 Fsutil.exe tool" entry in that link for more info.  The entire KB may also be helpful.
If my guess is actually the problem you won't have to reinstall Windows 7.  Just update - or roll back  - the driver.  You might first try going to Device Manager, selecting the storage controller, and rolling back to an earlier driver.
If that works, configure ThinkVantage System Update to not show the offending driver, or this will happen again.  If that doesn't do the job, go to Intel's site and find the latest Matrix Storage Manager or Rapid Storage Technology that is specified for your chipset and operating system.  Or just try the latest and if that doesn't work, try earlier ones.
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductL...
Here's a local KB addressing this (presumed) issue:  http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Windows-Update-Fails-After-Installing-New-Hard-...
To repeat, this is a bit of a guess.  It's pretty likely that your storage driver is the culprit.  Either you need one new enough to support the physical size reporting ioctl, or you've been bitten by TVSU "updating" to a buggy driver.  Either way the corrrect driver should fix things.
