Windows 8.1 Tablet Detection

Hi all
I'm looking for a script or set of queries to distinguish that a device is specifically a Windows 8.1 tablet.
I'm trying to resolve an issue with BGinfo tiling on tablet devices and I thought Chassis Detection
or TouchScreen PointingType queries was the way to go but the query results have been very inconsistent.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advanced.

I will take a swag at this although I don't know that there is a perfect answer.
Get-WmiObject Win32_SystemEnclosure -Property chassistypes | select-object -expandproperty chassistypes
The chassistype for a tablet is 8. I tested this command on a tablet (which returned 8) and a touch notebook (which returned 9).
I needed a query like this for other things so I am glad you posed the question to remind me. Credit
Ivan and Bing for getting me down the right path. Ivan should really blog more.
8 = Tablet
9 = Laptop
10 = Laptop
11 = Laptop
14 = Laptop
Everything Else = Desktop or Server
Hope that helps.

  • Excel 2013 BeforeRightClick Event fails on Windows 8.1 Tablet (it's an Excel 2013 tablet touch screen interface bug)

I have developed customized table context menus in an Excel 2013 workbook on my Laptop. They work just fine on my laptop and my work desktop. But when I try to run them on my tablet PC the Worksheet_BeforeRightClick event in Excel 2013 never fires. Other
worksheet events appear to work okay. I have fully reinstalled Office 2013 Pro and that does not make any difference.
I have read other comments regarding this same problem going back to 2013, but have never seen Microsoft respond to this issue. Nor have I been able to find a resolution. Has anyone else run into this and found a solution?
Additional Discoveries: Testing on my tablet shows that adding one custom CommandBarButton to either the top or the bottom of the default "List Range Popup" context menu causes the Worksheet_BeforeRightClick event to fail.  The basic context
menu commands still show up, but the default dropdown button for additional context menu commands disappears. The event is perhaps firing, but any customized code for the context menu is not being handled properly by Excel. This does appear to be a bug and
not a question of coding error. Perhaps someone else with a tablet PC running WIndows 8.1 could test this.
    Based on comments
here this bug was introduced in Excel 2013 because others find the problem does not exist when using Excel 2010 on a tablet PC. Note that all the commenters on the linked thread that are experiencing this problem are using tablet PCs.
Update 3-13-15: I stand corrected. The Worksheet_BeforeRightClick does work on Excel 2013 Windows 8.1 tablets. I happen to own an Asus VivoTab Note 8, which comes with a Wacom stylus. If I use the Wacom sylus to right click on an Excel 2013 worksheet cell,
the Worksheet_BeforeRightClick event fires and modified context menu code runs just fine. But the code will not run if one uses their finger to right click a worksheet cell. This explains why this problem only shows up on tablet PCs. So the "bug"
introduced in Excel 2013 is a general user touch screen interface bug and not an Excel events programming bug.
Update 3-21-15: Switched to a  Toshiba Protege laptop with touch screen. Same issue with finger touch screen interface on the Toshiba touch screen as with the Asus VivoTab touch screen.
Laptop: Toshiba Protege (with touch screen), Windows 8.1 64bit and MSOffice 2013 Pro 32bit
Tablet: Asus VivoTab Note 8, Windows 8.1 32bit and MSOffice 2013 Pro 32 bit
Desktop: Generic, Windows 7 64bit and MSOffice 2013 Pro 64bit

    Hello Phil,
Command bars were deprecated and shouldn't be used any longer. Instead, you need to use the Fluent UI (aka Ribbon UI) instead. You can read more about the new UI in the following series of articles in MSDN:
Customizing Context Menus in Office 2010
Customizing the 2007 Office Fluent Ribbon for Developers (Part 1 of 3)
Customizing the 2007 Office Fluent Ribbon for Developers (Part 2 of 3)
Customizing the 2007 Office Fluent Ribbon for Developers (Part 3 of 3)
As a workaround you can add a custom control to the context
menu with the getEnabled or getVisible callback which will be invoked before the context menu is shown.

  • Windows 8 is not detecting my VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder

Windows 8 is not detecting my VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder. I wonder if anyone else have the same problem.
I did install the latest version of CameraWindow (i.e.CameraWindow DC 8.8 for Windows) software and I tried to run it manually but it complains that it is not able to detect my (connected) VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder. CameraWindow is able to see my G10 Camera though.
Does this mean that VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder cannot be used with Windows 8??? This will be terrible!
    Please help!

    Hi Arabed,
I'm sorry to hear that you're unable to transfer your still images from your VIXIA HF M40 to your computer.  (For videos, please ensure that you're using the "Pixela Transfer Utility", included with your camcorder).
Have you been able to transfer still images from your camcorder before?
Have you received any error messages with regard to the connection itself?

  • System Requirements for PS CC, is my Windows 8.1 tablet fit enough?

    Hello everyone,
I have this Windows 8.1 tablet/laptop kind of thing in my hands. I have been asked to have a copy of PS. I actually was asked to directly just pirate it, but a 3-4 month subscription didn't look much expensive to me, so I won't. I either will buy it or won't have it at all, depending on the answer to this question:
Can this device handle PS CC?
    Intel Core i5-3337U CPU
    1.80 GHz (4 CPUs)
    Windows 8.1 OS
    4096 MB of RAM
    DDR3 at 1600 MHz
    128 GB of disk space
    SSD through SATA2
    ~40 GB free
    1920 x 1080 display
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    Integrated & Shared
This is what I'm worried about the most
For full list of disclosed specs: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/pcs/XE700T1C-K01US#key-specs
Now the System Requirements page for PS CC: https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/tech-specs.html
Are the specifications of the device I have are good enough? Specifically on the aspects of Processor and the GPU, which I don't have any at all in reality...
I can always try the product before buying it, but I wanted to ask about it before even trying it.

4 GB is the absolute minmum to launch Photoshop, 8 GB the minimum to run it well.
You cannot underestimate the HUGE importance of having enough available contiguous scratch disk space, as well as enough HS space for the swap files of the OS.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

    Hi,
For this situation, if you use windows 8.1 tablet, it should have the cmd prompt. You may try to use the system cmd prompt to install the windows service.
About how to install Windows service on Windows 8.1 tablet, you could ask the windows system forum.

  • How does a Windows 8.1 tablet (not Windows RT) sleep?

I have been using Android and iOS devices. I really have not cared how they sleep, because it is transparent. That is, I as the user, do not need to care about whether it is on or sleep, because if I play a music or connect to a messenger, they keep playing
or stay connected even though I turn off the screen.
Now, traditional desktop Windows determines idle time by keyboard/mouse input. If there is no keyboard/mouse input, the computer sleeps no matter how many CPU-intensive applications are running, unless the application explicitly prevents the system from
sleeping. Unlike Android/iOS devices, Windows desktop sleep means stopping everything, as far as I know. It is as if the system is turned off, but the RAM content is being preserved.
I am curious about how Windows tablets (not RT, but real Windows 8.1) behave. If I turn off the screen, the system sleeps as in the sense of desktop Windows? Or do they work like Android/iOS devices?
In short, do Windows 8.1 tablets sleep in a special way, or in the tradition desktop way?

    Hi Jeong,
If you turn off the screen of Windows 8.1 tablet, the system won't enter into sleep mode.
It just mean the screen has been turn off.
I suggest that you refer to the following article  to understand the sleep mode.

  • Windows 8.1 tablet

I received a Creative Cloud promo email today that said "Now you can do serious creative work whether you're on your phone, tablet, or desktop. Your Creative Cloud Profile lets you access your favorite creative assets from any device."   I have a Windows 8.1 laptop for my office and a Windows 8.1 tablet that I travel with, and an Android phone.  Can I install Creative Cloud on my Windows 8.1 tablet now (a Dell Venue 8 Pro), and my Android phone (an HTC One M8)?  The last time I asked - within the past 2 months - I was told that I could not install on my tablet.

I just tried to install it with Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Acrobat XI Pro and InCopy.   Photoshop was first at bat, and the installation failed with the following message:

What's up with that?   My tablet is 32 bit, not 64 bit.  Is that the issue?

  • Windows 8.1 Tablet applicaiton (installation and license)

I have developed Windows 8.1 Tablet application. We don't want to upload this to Windows store (our client want it to be private only). We are facing 2 issues
    1. It asks windows live ID to run the application which expires after 30 days. Client don't want frequently enter live ID and it should be installed and run without live ID.
    2. We want to install the app to multiple users on the tablet. Once its installed it should be available to all users who are accessing that tab. currently it is installed per user.
what are the possible solutions to these 2 problems
    Thanks
    -Vinod

The developer license you are using (and that expires after 30 days) is designed for development and test purposes. It is not appropriate for production use. For production you will want to set the devices up for proper side-loading.
    See
Try It Out: Sideload Windows Store Apps on TechNet for how to enable side-loading on your systems.
If your Windows 8.1 Pro systems are on a domain then they don't need a separate key. You just need to enable them for side-loading. See
    Windows 8.1 Update: Sideloading Enhancements
If they aren't on a domain then they'll need a side-loading key. If you're enrolled in a volume license program (see the Sideloading Enhancements link for which ones) you should be able to get side-loading keys from that. If not then you can buy an Enterprise
    Sideloading key through the
    Open License program.
    See the
    Windows Volume Licensing Guide and
    Sideloading Licensing Changes FAQ
You should be able to provision the system to automatically enable the app for individuals as they log in, but I don't know the details.
Since your questions are about system configuration rather than about development they would be better off in the Windows 8.1 IT Pro forums on TechNet than on MSDN. You'll find more expertise on these subjects there. I'll move your post over for you.

  • Potential Windows Update database error detected 0x80070490

This is the response I get when I run the Windows update troubleshooter from the Windows 8.1 Action Center.  If I click next it reports the errors have been fixed.  However if I run it again it reports exactly the same errors.
After searching the Internet I have found that several users have reported having this issue.  As result of the aforementioned search I have tried the following:
    1) Run the Fixit tool for Windows 8.1 located at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us.
    2) Run the System Update Readiness commands: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth located at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821/en-us.
    3) Saved contents of C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 to a temp folder and then deleted contents of C:\Windows\System32\catroot2.
    4)Renamed C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old
    5) Restarted Windows 8.1.
    6) Verified that C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 and that C:Windows\SoftwareDistribution folders had been rebuilt.
    7) I then ran the Windows update troubleshooter from the Window 8.1 Action Center again and got the same response as listed above. The errors still exist and are not fixed.
    8) Finally, I downloaded Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation and I did a completely new clean install of Windows 8.1 and without installing anything else (no updates, no software, no antivirus) the above errors appeared within minutes after connecting
to the internet.  I checked using the Windows update troubleshooter several times before connecting to the Internet and each time no problems were found, but shortly after I connected the above errors are shown to exists.
Any suggestions that will help fix this issue will be of great help.

Did anyone ever find an actual fix for this problem?  I have a very similar problem.  I have gone through the same steps for fixing my issues with getting a message of problems found every time I run the Windows Update troubleshooter.  It
continually finds what it says are Potential Windows Update Database error detected 0x800700D and says they are fixed, along with another message saying Windows Update components must be repaired and it says they are fixed as well.  However, each time
I run the troubleshooter it finds the same issues.  I have no problems running Windows Update under Windows 8.1 and them all installing without issue, yet I can't download or update ANY apps within the MS store and like the problem above, when it looks
for my apps it says it's having problems finding them and to try later.  If I try to download even a free app, I get an error message that something happened and your purchase can't be completed. Error code: 0x80096004.
I have dug through everything I can find on this error message and tried changing my sign in on my laptop to a local account, created a new MS account to access the store and continue to get the same error message.  I have tried it with my Kaspersky
Internet Security 2015 turned completely off.  I've also ran SFC scannow and there are no errors and have ran DISM which found a problem but says it was fixed.  After running it again, there were no errors.  I have no other problems with anything
else (that I know of on my machine).  It is an Asus Q400A and came with Windows 8.0.  I ran all the updates and then upgraded to 8.1 through the MS store without issue.  I have installed all updates since upgrading to 8.1 and have absolutely
no problem running ANY updates, but can't seem to access the store no matter what I try.
If anyone has found a solution to this I'd appreciate your input.  Hard to believe MS would put out a product that has such a basic problem that has affected so many users and can't seem to come up with some resolution that doesn't require registry
editing, running commands from elevated command prompts, and a CS degree to resolve--there are soooo many issues online regarding this kind of error and others related to running SFC and DISM...most ending up in their ultimate default answer....renew or reinstall
Windows and all the updates....which still doesn't resolve the problem for many!  I've always been a PC guy, but I'm starting to like the MacBook Pro I picked for work related reasons with great hesitation.  I've wasted more time chasing this issue
down than I all the time I've spent actually using the Mac without even a hitch!
Thx in advance for any feedback....please no MAC blasting....at this point, it would be not well received!!

  • How do I connect a Windows 8.1 tablet to a new Macbook Pro?

I am going to be purchasing a new Macbook Pro soon.  In addition, I'll probably purchase a new Windows 8.1 tablet to replace my aging iPad 2.  How can I connect the Windows tablet to the new Macbook Pro so I can add/remove data & movies?
Thanks to everyone for this help on this; I appreciate it.

Windows 8.1 is designed as a desktop operating system, so it doesn't need to be connected to any PC and you won't be able to connect it to your MacBook Pro because it hasn't got any port to do it.
Instead, what you can do is to install iTunes on the tablet and access to all your content purchased from the iTunes Store by using your Apple ID, or transfer your songs by using Home Sharing > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3819
