Windows always "enables disk mode"

I have a 40gb 4th generation iPod connected to a Dell XPS M1210 laptop via USB. the laptop is running XP pro SP2 with all current updates. iTunes is version 7.1.1.5 and iPod is version 3.1.1.
When docking the iPod, XP always mounts the iPod assigning it a drive letter, even though in iTunes, I do not have the "enable disk use" option checked.
I can check the "enable disk use", hit "apply" then uncheck "enable disk use" and apply it again and the disk use is not enabled. However, the next time I dock the iPod, it reverts back to the default mode of having the disk use enabled, even though that option is not checked in iTunes.
I'd like Windows to not start the iPod up with disk use enabled as the default as that option is not checked in iTunes. I'm assuming I need to adjust a registry setting some place. Can anybody help?

If you have an iPod in manual mode, enable disk use is selected as well, by default. The only way to remove that would be to put the iPod into automatic mode (uncheck "manually manage music" first).
If you have an iPod in automatic mode, and you sync it to iTunes, when iTunes says that the update is complete and it is OK to disconnect, and the iPod is no longer flashing the Do Not Disconnect screen, the iPod is essentially ejected from your system which is why you would no longer see it in Windows with a drive letter on it. It will continue to show in your Device Manager simply because it is physically connected to your computer.
Windows sometimes pre-determines what some drive letters are going to be assigned to. If you're getting different behaviors on different computers, this could be a sign that one PC has the drive letter already assigned to something else (even if the same letter is used on both computers). You could try changing the drive letters on various computers (enable disk use FIRST, through iTunes).

This may unify the behavior on both computers, but again, there's no way to connect an iPod to a Windows computer without it getting a drive letter at some point.

  • Enable Disk Mode: I'm Stumped

I'm trying to transfer my iTunes files to a new PC. Two problems:
    (1) My iPod appears in "My Computer" only briefly before disappearing. iTunes sees it, and I have no trouble adding new material via my old computer. It just isn't accessible from "My Computer".
    (2) My iPod will not stay in "Enable Disk" mode. I click it, and click Apply. But the next time I connect my iPod to my computer it is no longer in Enable Disk mode. (Note: although iTunes tells me that it is "syncing" when I apply the Enable-Disk change, there is no discrenable effect on the iPod (e.g., "Do Not Disconnect," or lighting up)).
I suspect that problems (1) and (2) are related, but I haven't found any solutions in the forums. Can someone help? Thanks.

  • Enable Disk Mode

There are some times when I need the hard disk inside the iPod to store files. Sometimes I need to store a paper or assignment for school. But then, sometimes, I can go for weeks at a time without using the hard disk. But, I always keep the disk mode enabled. I was thinking about disabling the disk mode. My problem is, would I lose all of the files on the hard disk (not counting music and contacts) or would I just not be able to access it?
    Thanks.

You will erase the files if you discontinue disk use.

  • Ipod 160g does not appear on itunes but it appears on windows when in disk mode

my ipod 160 g does not appear in itune (disk mode or not) but it appears in windows as IPOD (F:) only when it's in disk mode. I tried reseting it by holding the menu and center button it stop but then it goes back to the apple logo screen and stay on untill the battery dies and nothing else happens how can I reset it to is factory settings?

When you connect it in Disk Mode, leave it charging the iPod Battery till Full Charge.
In the meantime, 30 minutes or so into the charging, ( I just want the Ipod to have sufficient power for any harddisk Operation)
go to Window Explorer (or My Computer),
Select the Ipod, right click properties, ->tools->error checking->Check Now->fix error
After the error fixing (may take a while but then you still have to wait till the battery charging is complete.)
Disconnect the iPod from the PC.
Antivirus has a tendency to freeze Itunes sync Operation with Ipod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your Ipod filesystem, so when iTunes cant read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
    My suggestion.
Connect your Ipod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete. - Done above
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When Itunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
Good Luck! and have a Nice Day!

  • Enable disk mode (difference?)

I was wondering what are the major differences when enabling the disk mode. I haven't enable my nano yet... cause of all the horor stories.
I am able to add photos and contact without diskmode... but curious to add calender and notes.
I just wanna be informed and know what to expect. So what are the differences?

I was wondering what are the major differences when
    enabling the disk mode.
If disk mode is enabled, you can:
    1) Use your Nano as a normal hard drive.
    2) You can add notes.
If disk mode is not enabled, your Nano will auto-eject after an auto-sync.
    I haven't enable my nano
    yet.
Enabled? What do you mean by enabled?
.. cause of all the horor stories.
The horror stories mainly relate to the iPod Video, and only for the 1.1 updater. Consider the 40million+ iPods sold. Those here with broken Nano's represent a percent of a percent of a percent of a percent of Nano users, compared with iPod Video users who've run the updater.

  • How to keep "float in window" always as default mode?

I am used to CS 3 on PC, and I am now using CS 4 on Mac. I find it very disturbing to my workflow when the arrange mode keeps triping back into tile mode. I'm really not even sure what activities trigger that, but it happens by itself as I am performing other tasks.
How can I lock the mode so it remains "floating" at all times unless I change it manually at the menu?
    Thanks

I may be misunderstanding you but I have so far not observed the behaviour and I’m not even sure if the Arrange Documents-options can be assigned Shortcuts.
Could you, just to make sure, post a screenshot?

  • Can't Enable Disk Mode

I have the red X, I'm tried the steps outlined on support page. I get the apple logo to appear immediately press center and play and it holds at apple screen for a few seconds then goes back to red X? Any help I live a distance away from any apple store and really don't want to pay 30 bucks to get something fixed that's quite clearly an apple problem

I have the same problem too, so still don't know the way to fix my Ipod. Nobody else know about this problem here. What shall we do now?

  • Using Disk Mode between Mac & Windows Computers

My friend called after Christmas elated that he had received a new iPod video from his wife (my kind of wife!). He conneceted it to his eMac and iTunes did its thing loading his music library onto the new iPod. Next, he enabled DISK MODE and dropped some files onto the iPod. Later, he connected the iPod to a Windows XP computer and tried to retrieve the files, but could not. Windows' iTunes wanted to reformat the iPod.
If a Mac or a Windows PC has formated the iPod's drive, can the iPod not share files in disk mode between the two platforms?
I have successfully used portable USB flash drives between platforms, but I suspect that once iTunes has added music to an iPod, its DISK MODE cannot be used between Mac and Windows because iTunes formatted the drive somehow for its specific operating system.
I wonder, though...if he were to tell iTunes to use 100% of the iPod for DISK MODE files, would the iPod then become like my USB flash drive exaple discussed above? Then no problem between platforms?
    STEVE

If an iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. Macs can read Windows drives so a Windows formatted iPod can be used on a Mac. There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, MacDrive and XPlay for instance get good reviews. XPlay is specifically for connecting an iPod, MacDrive for connecting any Mac formatted drive:
    XPlay 2
    MacDrive
You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows

  • Help! My iPod is stuck in disk mode!

So yesterday my computer didn't recognize my iPod. I followed different directions but non of them seemed to work. Then I put it into disk mode. Now the only way to put songs on my iPod and charge it is by putting it into disk mode. Now it's stuck there. Everytime I try reseting it will stay on the apple logo screen. From there all I can do is put it back in disk mode.
Help me get it out of disk mode and load songs normally! I would be very grateful!
    30GB iPod   Windows XP

Xox: Rather than reset....Restore your iPod.
To turn disk mode off, open iTunes with the iPod connected, edit/preferences/ipod/music. Enable disk mode is at the bottom. If it is greyed out, change your Music update option to manual, uncheck enable disk mode and then set your music update option back to what you want.

  • Turning off disk mode

I cant get my iPod off disk mode, i have tried resetting it, but pressing the buttons wont do anything

You have to turn it on/off in iTunes. I don't think the iPod can do it on its own.
Down on the bottom, right hand side you'll see buttons(when Ipod is connected) click Prefrences or options (I don't remember exactly), then uncheck or check the box that reads something like, "enable disk mode". (click through all the tabs until you find it).

Click the eject icon in the source list, next to your iPod. To turn it off permanently, go to iPod preferences and uncheck "Enable Disk Mode".

  • Disable Disk Mode

    Hey all,
    I have a 1GB Shuffle (1st gen) and an iBook G4 933MHz w/640 MB RAM running 10.4.7.
I originally enabled disk mode in iTunes 6. Later I decided that I didn't want this feature and I'd just use my jump drive as I was already doing. I unchecked "Enable Disk Mode", but when I plug my Shuffle in it still shows up in Finder with 1.8 MB free. I can even copy files too. (It's almost like having a 3.5 inch floppy, but better
    also:
If I'm not running iTunes, and plug in the Shuffle it mounts in Finder. Once I start iTunes, it goes away (in Finder).
If I am running iTunes and plug in the Shuffle it briefly mounts in Finder and then goes away.
I just installed iTunes 7.0 and get the same effect.
It's a little annoying since I have to eject the Shuffle before unplugging it. (or start iTunes)

    Hi myscienceteacher,
Are you still having this problem?
Do you have any data on the Shuffle besides songs?
Have you updated to the latest iTunes?

  • What is disk mode? HELP!!

Hi, I received a new Nano on Christmas, and it has work perfectly until now, what is disk mode? It is located up on the area where the time usually is? There is a large blcak check mark in the screen? Help!!

The check mark has an "Ok to disconnect" message under it, right? If so, then your iPod is connected to your computer, and is ready to be unplugged. Disk mode is a mode that lets you use your iPod as a portable hard drive, as well as a music player. By turning this feature on, you have to manually eject your iPod from your computer every time you want to unplug it. To turn the feature off, plug your iPod into your computer, go to iPod preferences (a little button in the bottom right of iTunes), and uncheck the "Enable disk mode" option.
