Windows Azure Powershell Automate Login
Hello,
I am stumped and starting to feel beat by this one.
I'm trying to automate tasks from a website to Windows Azure. Specifically, when a new user signs up, I want to create a Remote-PSSession and run a few commands on the server to set up the new user. I have the remote parts working but I can't seem to log
in without the manual intervention of entering my username and password in the browser, thus, I have to run the commands from PowerShell and not from C#.
Most recently, I was following this tutorial:
http://michaelcollier.wordpress.com/2013/02/28/configuring-connectivity-with-windows-azure-powershell-cmdlets/
This seems like exactly what I need but maybe I'm misunderstanding some of the fundamental concepts.
Here's what I tried most recently:
To attempt to get a fresh start I deleted all of the certificates out of my Current User\Personal\Certificates directory. Which (as far as I can tell) is the same directory referenced in Michael's post above when using:
Get-Item cert:\\CurrentUser\My\$thumbprint
I then ran the following commands, and when prompted downloaded and saved the .publishsettings file to my desktop:
Get-AzurePublishSettingsFile
Import-AzurePublishSettingsFile "C:\Users\<My User>\Desktop\myPubSettings.publishsettings"
At that point I tried the following:
# I started with:
cd cert:\\CurrentUser\My
dir
# to look up the thumbprint, then proceeded to set the variables...
$thumbPrint = "the thumbprint I looked up above."
$subscriptionName = "My Azure Subscription"
# Not actually my subscription:
$subscriptionId = "e234a9-4asb-9asdf-8loremIpsum"
$mgmtCert = Get-Item cert:\\CurrentUser\My\$thumbprint
Set-AzureSubscription -SubscriptionName $subscriptionName -SubscriptionId $subscriptionId -Certificate $mgmtCert
# This line failed, saying Default Subscription was not a valid parameter
Set-AzureSubscription -DefaultSubscription $subscriptionName
Set-AzureSubscription -SubscriptionName $subscriptionName –CurrentStorageAccount ‘mystorageaccount’
After that, I felt reasonably confident that I was logged in. So I tried to run:
Get-AzureVM
Which returned the error:
"Get-AzureVM : Your credentials have expired. Please use Add-AzureAccount to log in again."
I feel like there are a lot of tips on the internet, but none that I've been able to get working. Is there a known bug, or is it clear based on what I tried above what is wrong? Is it possible to to automate the login to Azure so that I can run scripts from
C# to perform some of my tasks?
Thanks for your help,
Wes

How to get Windows Azure Powershell on a HDInsight VM?
I've already searched MSDN and Bing and didn't find an answer to my question below -> So how do I install Windows Azure Powershell on my HDInsight cluster?
Overall, I'm trying to execute the tutorial here:
http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/hdinsight-analyze-twitter-data/
1) I provisioned a single HDInsight cluster. I have a pre-existing storage account. I can use Azure Storage Explorer to browse around so I know it's ok.
2) I am able to open a remote desktop connection to my cluster.
3) To run any of the PowerShell scripts in the tutorial linked above I need "Windows Azure Powershell". Regular "Windows Powershell" doesn't seem to have some cmdlets.
4) After I remote into my cluster I go to this page
http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/install-configure-powershell/ and launch the link that says "You can download and install the Azure PowerShell modules by running the
Microsoft Web Platform Installer...".
5) I choose that installer link.
6) I choose "Run"
7) It says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."
So how do I install Windows Azure Powershell on my HDInsight cluster?
Thanks in advance.Hi CraigGu,
User won't get admin access on HDInsight cluster so that's the reason you were getting the error.
It's not recommended to install any software/do any customization(via rdp) on headnode of HDInsight cluster. The reason is that changes will not be preserved due to cluster reimage process.
To answer your question please install and configure PowerShell on your desktop/laptop and submit jobs.
Thank you for choosing Microsoft HDInsight
Thanks and Regards,
Please marked it as answered if it answer your question.

I'm trying to install Windows Azure PowerShell on my Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise laptop. As a prerequisite, it needs to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, I but keep receiving an error:
Service 'SQL Server VSS Writer' (SQLWriter) failed to start. Verify that you have
sufficient privileges to start system services.
The service that it tries to use by default is the Local Service. I verified that it has log on as a service privileges and even did a restart. Same error.
any ideas?
Cross posted in Windows
AzureHi ,
According to your description, when you install SQL Server 2012 Local DB , it encounter the error about SQLWriter. We need to verify if you invoke SQLLOcalDB.msi directly, and check
MSSQL service is running and other service’s status. In addition, you can go to event viewer and check the error logs for analysis.
There is a similar issue about Service SQL Server VSS Writer and troubleshooting SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, you can review the following article.

Windows 7 automatic login to AD and Edir
Any one have clear instructions on how to accomplish automatic login to a windows AD domain and edirectory?
Using Novell Client 2 Sp3 for windows 7 (IR6). Novell is the primary login.
Goal is to enable the automatic login to both as user "install" .. sysprep the image.. deploy the image so it automatically logs in as the user. Installs associated default zenworks bundles, with the last bundle removing the automatic login registry keys.. then reboot and be ready for the user to login to.
used to use autolog.exe from Tommy for XP, which I understand doesn't work with windows 7.Lol apparently I just need to talk myself through this process :P
Seems to be working at the moment. Here's what I did. Computer is joined to AD domain and has Novell Client installed/primary logon. I haven't tried this with a sysprep'd image yet, but hoping the sysprep process doesn't change any of these keys:
HKLM\Software\Novell\Login
REG_SZ AutoAdminLogon = 1
REG_SZ DefaultLocationProfile = Default
REG_SZ DefaultUserName = install (or whatever username you intend to use)
REG_SZ DefaultPassword = password (or whatever password associated with above username)
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
REG_SZ AutoAdminLogon = 1
REG_SZ DefaultDomainName = yourdomainname
REG_SZ DefaultUserName = install (or whatever username)
REG_SZ DefaultPassword = install (or whatever password associated with above username)
REG_DWORD DisableCAD = 1 (disable the Ctrl+Alt+Del prompt) -
Azure powershell gives the error :Your credentials have expired Please use Add-AzureAccount to login again.
Keep receiving the same error even after logging in again and again.
I want to create credentials for my storage account and want to take backup of a database on azure storage account.
Please help.I had the same error and it was caused by the newest versions of Azure PowerShell. I had to install back to version 8.14 (February 2015) in order for it to work.

Automatically Login Windows System User In TestStand 3.1
I have checked the "Automatically Login Windows System User" in TestStand 3.1. However, when I re-start TestStand I still have to enter the password each time. Why is this happening? Both the username and password do exist in the Users.ini file. I am using Windows XP SP3. I have already talked to a NI support engineer and they did not have an answer. Thanks for the help.
FelixHi ic2118,
Can you move the Users.ini file (C:\Program Files\National Instruments\TestStand 3.1\Cfg) to a new location and restart TestStand. The file may have been corrupted and moving it out of the Cfg folder will force TestStand to create the file again.

Check Windows Update and Remote by Azure PowerShell
Hi everyone,
I've been dealing with a case in which my recent security update has broken the AD authentication. As a result, I can't remotely connect to the virtual machine by RDP. I'm wondering whether it's possible to check and remove Windows Update by Azure PowerShell
from my laptop.
Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

From Windows Azure `Edit in Visual Studio Online` ; Unclear On Which Login To Use
I have created a web site in Windows Azure and linked my site to `Visual Studio Online` where I can do automated builds upon checkin and all works.
Now from Azure's dashboard on the site I am presented with the option to edit it in Visual Studio Online:
But then I am confronted with a user authentication page.
Which credentials are to be used?
How are the provisioned exactly?
If they are not a windows live id...why not?
William Wegerson (www.OmegaCoder.Com)Hi,
From the image you provided, it seems like you need credential to sign in ***.scm.azurewebsites.net, please kindly read the following article.
Here is a snippet:
simply browse using your favorite internet browser to https://{site name}.scm.azurewebsites.net (in other words, add
.scm in front of the site name). Upon entry, you will be asked for credentials and those will be the same as your deployment credentials. If you have never set up your deployment credentials, you can open your site’s dashboard
in the Azure Portal and click Set up deployment credentials. If you already have deployment credentials but do not remember them, you can use the dashboard to reset them

I am currently using Windows Update PowerShell Module to updates several machines. I notice that on identically configured windows 2003 and windows 2008 servers some nodes do not reboot on their own and wait for a user confirmation. This keeps them from finishing their update cycle and requires manual intervention. This happens even if no user is logged on.
Is there a way to get reliable reboots upon reaching conclusion of a patch cycle? I notice that on windows 8 and windows 2012 there is additional support to force reboot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2835627/en-usBut we have a lot of older platforms (thousands) and I am frustrated that I can't determine why some nodes do not complete their patch cycle by rebooting on their own while other identically built nodes do so.
Thanks.
Gautamsome nodes do not reboot on their own and wait for a user confirmation.
This happens even if no user is logged on.
This is technologically impossible, so we need to find out what else is going on in this scenario. For starters, you'll need to show us the WindowsUpdate.log entries where this update was installed and the system restarted.

Crystal report installation problem in windows azure.
Hi Everyone,
Good day!.
I have purchased standard version of web site in windows azure server,i'm converting existing normal asp.net application into widows azure project as web role project. In my existing project they have used crystal report tool to generate the reports.
The issue has been arrived when i published the project into azure server. When i did some R&D people have suggested some tool to install the tool name called "CRRuntime.MSI".We tried and install this msi file both 64 bit and 32 bit,but the
problem we couldn't even know whether the .MSI file got installed or not.
Still we are having same issues in server. Please give your good ideas to short this issue in server.
I'm using VS 2012
Thanks in advance !
Regards,
Ranjithkumar.Hi,
Please make sure that you are enabling remote connection to the web role while deploying from visual studio 2012. Then get remote connectivity RDP file for the VM and connect to it. Install your tool manually and check if the problem getting resolved. If
this manual installation works then you can schedule installation as start up task in Azure web role.
[Although I don't know if your tool can be installed automatically by .cmd or .bat or powershell script file]
You can add installations as start up task in Azure Web Role service definition file. Here is the link and sample XML tags-
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg456327.aspx
<ServiceDefinition name="MyService" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ServiceHosting/2008/10/ServiceDefinition">
<WebRole name="WebRole1">
<Startup>
<Task commandLine="Startup.cmd" executionContext="limited" taskType="simple">
</Task>
</Startup>
</WebRole>
</ServiceDefinition>

Cannot install Windows Azure Active Directory Sync tool on Server 2012 w/ SQL Server 2012
I went to change a user password on the server today and after changing the password I logged into the SQL server to run “Import-module dirsync” & “Start-onlinecoexistencesync” in powershell in order to sync the new password with Exchange Online. After
waiting ten minutes I tried setting up the email on the user’s PC but the new password was not being accepted. I logged into Office 365 and I got the following warning.
"Warning: Last synced more than 3 days ago | Troubleshoot"
So I pressed troubleshoot and the site installed a tool on the server to try and find out what the issue was. After the tool ran it told me that the version of dirsync.exe was out of date and that I should download the new one and install it. So I downloaded
the new dirsync.exe (version 7020 I believe) and tried installing it. I kept getting error after error, different ones to boot.
First it told me I wasn’t part of the FIMSyncAdmins group (so I added myself), then it told me that it could not connect to MIIS server, so I tried starting it and windows said that there was a problem with the sign on used by the service so I had
to reset the password for the local user named “AAD_bfd1d6f0cef7” which was being used by that service. The service started successfully and when I went to install it told me I could not and if the problem persisted I should uninstall the old version and reinstall.
Looking in the log file, before I even install the software I see the following Information...
Level: Information
Date: 2015-03-24 12:49:17 PM
Source: Directory Synchronization
Event ID: 0
Task Category: None
"The current configuration of the Windows Azure Active Directory Sync tool is invalid. Please reinstall the Windows Azure Active Directory Sync tool."
So I tried to reinstall (i even manually uninstalled the old version and removed the folder in C:\Program Files\ called "Windows Azure Active Directory Sync") and on reinstall I get as far as "Installing Components" and then after a little
while it errors out with the error "The install was unable to setup a required component. Check the event logs for more information. Please try the installation again and if the error persists, contact Technical Support. "
Looking at the log file there are a bunch of new entries, created by the installer. There's over 300 new entries and I can not post them all here due to character count restriction. you can find the log file here...
www.clarkfreightways.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/dirsync_log.txt
Can anyone tell me what is going on, I've been looking through the log files and I can see errors but I'm not sure what to do to fix it.Greetings!
Wanted to know if you've hosted the DirSync tool (latest version) on a VM? Also, if this is deployed in a Production or Lab environment? If it's a lab setup, you may
try installing the DirSync on a new VM / Server (suspecting that it could be some machine related issues).
Here's a Support KB helping with different errors:
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2684395
If its a production environment, would suggest to raise a
Technical Support Ticket for assisting further with break-fix.
Thank you,
Arvind
