Windows BlueScreen Error BCCode 124?

Back in September I bought a custom built PC, and was having absolutely no problems with it until earlier this year. Whenever I tried to download something, stream a video, my computer will restart without warning, and upon completion would say this exactly:
Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown

Upon trying to fix this solution myself I tried to run a stress test, and the BlueScreen happens once I start the test. I made sure my fans all worked properly and felt my PC and it is not hot, and a couple areas barely warm. I could be overclocking my PC
but have not even touched that so I highly doubt it, so does anyone know why? Also, I already installed a fresh version of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Stop 0x124 is a hardware error
If you are overclocking try resetting your processor to standard settings and see if that helps.
If you continue to get BSODs here are some more things you may want to consider.
This is usually heat related, defective hardware, memory or even processor though it is"possible" that it
is driver related (rare).
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try
Synopsis:
A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.
Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress.
 Generic "Stop 0x124" Troubleshooting Strategy:
1) Ensure that none of the hardware components are overclocked. Hardware that is driven beyond
its design specifications - by overclocking - can malfunction in unpredictable ways.
2) Ensure that the machine is adequately cooled.
If there is any doubt, open up the side of the PC case (be mindful of any relevant warranty conditions!) and point a mains fan squarely at the motherboard. That will rule out most (lack of) cooling issues.
3) Update all hardware-related drivers: video, sound, RAID (if any), NIC... anything that interacts with a piece
of hardware.
It is good practice to run the latest drivers anyway.
4) Update the motherboard BIOS according to the manufacturer's instructions and clear the CMOS.
Their website should provide detailed instructions as to the brand and model-specific procedure.
5) Rarely, bugs in the OS may cause "false positive" 0x124 events where the hardware wasn't complaining but Windows thought
otherwise (because of the bug).
At the time of writing, Windows 7 is not known to suffer from any such defects, but it is nevertheless important to always keep Windows itself updated.
6) Attempt to (stress) test those hardware components which can be put through their paces artificially.
The most obvious examples are the RAM and HDD(s).
For the RAM, use the 3rd-party memtest86 utility to run many hours worth of testing. (6-8 passes to stress the ram out)
For hard drives, check whether CHKDSK /R finds any problems on the drive(s), notably "bad sectors".
Unreliable RAM, in particular, is deadly as far as software is concerned, and anything other than a 100% clear memory test result is cause for concern. Unfortunately, even a 100% clear result from the diagnostics utilities does not guarantee that the RAM is
free from defects - only that none were encountered during the test passes.
7) As the last of the non-invasive troubleshooting steps, perform a "vanilla" re-installation of Windows: just the
OS itself without any additional applications, games, utilities, updates, or new drivers -
NOTHING AT ALL that is not sourced from the Windows 7 disc.
Should that fail to mitigate the 0x124 problem, jump to the next steps.
If you run the "vanilla" installation long enough to convince yourself that not a single 0x124 crash has occurred, start installing updates and applications slowly, always pausing between successive additions long enough to get a feel for whether the machine
is still free from 0x124 crashes.
Should the crashing resume, obviously the very last software addition(s) may be somehow linked to the root cause.
If stop 0x124 errors persists despite the steps above, and the hardware is under warranty, consider returning it and requesting a replacement which does not suffer periodic MCE events.
Be aware that attempting the subsequent hardware troubleshooting steps may, in some cases, void your warranty:
8) Clean and carefully remove any dust from the inside of the machine.
Reseat all connectors and memory modules.
Use a can of compressed air to clean out the RAM DIMM sockets as much as possible.
9) If all else fails, start removing items of hardware one-by-one in the hope that the culprit is something non-essential
which can be removed.
Obviously, this type of testing is a lot easier if you've got access to equivalent components in order to perform swaps.
Should
you find yourself in the situation of having performed all of the steps above without a resolution of the symptom, unfortunately the most likely reason is because the error message is literally correct - something is fundamentally wrong with the machine's
hardware.

  • Odd Bug Check Event ID 18 - BCCode 124; Can anyone help?

    Hello,
I understand that each bug check is different even if the codes are the same due to different real world problems but I'm stumped, granted I don't know too much. Hence I am here. I'm getting a BSOD every time I let my computer idle for 10 and half minutes.
Like clockwork it will blue screen. However, whenever I am using it, it won't blue screen at all. I have even used my computer nonstop for 13 hours and no BSOD, leave it for 10 minutes and you guessed it, blue screen.
    So here's the info...

Not too helpful right? Alright, so I have updated the BIOS to latest version, all drivers are up to date, everything is as up to date as I can get it as (as far as I can perceive). I am still getting bug checks when it idles for 10 minutes. So I do a bug

I should also mention that I checked hard drive for bad sectors and ram for any errors using 10 passes with Memcheck86 and nothing bad to report. If anyone can help me out with this that would be great! I can provide as many minidump files as you need, if
    need be.
Note: I have previously tried resolving this issue and rather than GenuineIntel being the probable cause, it used to show netio.sys as the culprit. However, I tried using a registry cleaner and of course it wiped all previous minidumps that showed netio.sys
as probable source of error and now it just shows GenuineIntel. Interesting? Sorry I can't provide those "previous" minidump files accusing netio.sys, because the registry cleaner wiped them, but I can provide current minidump files.
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi,
In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
-- %systemroot% is the environment variable for your Windows directory. For example, C:\Windows.
    2. Copy any and all .DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop, create a new folder on the Desktop to put these .DMP files in, and then zip the folder. You can then either use a 3rd party tool such as 7-Zip/Winrar, or you can use Windows'
    default method of zipping folders.
Compress and uncompress files (zip files).
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUpUtilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon use. With this said, if you've run such software, and your Minidump folder is empty, you will need
to allow the system to crash once again to generate a crash dump.
    3. Upload the .ZIP containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply.
Preferred sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers, download managers, etc.
4 (optional): The type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel Memory Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference
between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel Memory Dumps in the simplest definition is a Kernel Memory Dump contains
much more information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel Memory Dump is
the best choice. Do note that Kernel Memory Dumps are much larger
in size due to containing much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
After doing that, to learn how to share the link to the file if you are unaware, please visit the following link -
Share files and folders and change permissions and view 'Get a link'.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type %systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for
    all drives'.
    3. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the
    system log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than
Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.
If you cannot get into normal mode to do any of this, please do this via Safe Mode.
    Regards,
    Patrick

I have tried the Cat 8.43 which came with this card - Error occurs
I have tried the Cat 8.1 which is current on the ATI/AMD website - Error Occurs
I have tried the Cat 7.12 and the error occurs.
    Any ideas?
Card is running at stock speeds. Never O/C as I have only had it about 1 week.

Not sure but the Seagate drive I have has made a couple of noises I don't like.
I have another which is identical so going to clone this one onto that and see if it fixes the issue
You have just changed the video card, and you had the rest of your config working before?
I mean the ram is a lot of times involved in bsod (or psu).
I don't like to see the RC SP1 are you sure it is not the source of problems?
Personnaly i prefer to put the patches and wait for the final SP1.
The last Catalyst is the 8.1 + the hotfix (v 8.451.4.0).
You can try the previous one: 7.12, to see if it corrects the issue.
I am running the same video card with an X38 mobo + core2duo + vista 64 and no bsod.
You won't get a lot more from PCI-E 1.0 to 2.0, perhaps nothing more.
The PCI-E 1.0 is not fully used by actual videocards.
    i.e the the Radeon HD3870 X2 is PCI-E 1.0.
PCI-E 2.0 is pure marketing for the moment.
The X38 is the best chipset for the moment if you want a crossfire both PCI-E at x16 and the best memmory management, and also if you want a 45 nm processor.
But a lot of people prefer P35 mobo's cheaper and doing almost the same thing (with one video card).
    If you buy a core 2 duo i hope you will take a E8xxx (6Mo L2 cache... ).

  • An unknown error occurred (-124)

I cannot update my ipod whatsoever. I keep receiving "The iPod XXXX cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-124)." I have searched and searched but cannot find anything related to error (-124). I have a 4th gen iPod running software v3.1.1 and iTunes is v7.0.2.16. I seemed to start receiving the error after I updated my ipod a few weeks ago. I managed to manually bring songs across one at a time but it hangs when playing or skips through groups of songs, or plays 5-10 seconds of a song and then skips.
Any way to downgrade back to a lower version of iTunes?

As an update to this, I have just installed the latest version of iTunes (7.7), so I'm running all the latest iPod and iTunes versions...
...but I'm still having the same problem
Can anyone provide any insight into how to fix this???

  • How do I correct a Windows Vista error for HP Officejet 6500 E709n wireless?

I continue to get a Windows Vista error when trying to install the printer software ...now it does print, but only the bottom half of a page..???

Dave, I would recommend completely uninstalling the printer from Programs and Features (after unplugging the USB cord if you are using one), and removing the printer from both Device Manager and Devices and Printer.
We are going to reinstall the printer from one of the downloads that HP makes available, but first I will have to know if your printer is the 6500A or the 6500. Also is your Win Vista machine running 64bit software or 32bit software?
If you can give me a complete product name and the information on your system, I will link you to the appropriate download.
    Let me know!

  • Cannot delete file - tried everything - file in use by Windows Explorer error

Hi - I have tried now for 2-3 hours trying to delete an .mkv file from my "Downloads" folder
It says the file is in use by Windows Explorer and cannot be deleted
I have tried deleting it using Del command prompt as me and as Administrator (I am the Admnistrator, there are no other users) - no luck
I have tried Safe Boot and then deleting - no luck
I have tried rebooting many times and then deleting - no luck
Any ideas? It's driving me nuts

hi to all who have this bug- "file in use by Windows Explorer error"
this is the only way that it works:
    1.type cmd in search box
2.go to the drive and the directory the file is in ,for example:
after you type cmd you have a black screen with c:\user\
type in the drive the file is in and hit enter example - d: than hit enter
    than you should see d:\>
now click the directory the problem file is in ,for example i will call the directory "movies"  type in this-   cd movies
now you will see this d:\movies>
to delete the file type this:  del filename.mkv (dont forget the .mkv or any other file extension) don't hit enter yet, first open task manager (cntrl+shift+esc) go to process tab than right click on explorer.exe choose and click on end process
now your desktop should disappear. get back to the "cmd" window and hit enter.
now the file is deleted. now go back to the task manager and click on "file" on the upper left corner then on new task then type in "explorer.exe"
    and you are done
please note that the file name you choose to delete cant be with spaces between the letters .if so you will need to change it in the same way in the cmd window only the comand will be instead of "del filename.mkv"(for example) after you are in the
    right drive and directory:
    rename "test space.mkv" testspace.mkv
    hope i helped
this is the only way it workes
Instead of running a CMD prompt and typing everything, just start up Winrar or Winzip, kill Explorer, then delete problem MKV files to your hearts content within Winrar or Winzip.
Winrar and Winzip will navigate your folders as well.
After you are done, create a new Explorer task.
or.....   if you need to rename MKV files, just rename them within Winrar/Winzip with Explorer not running.
I change the MKV extension to AVI (in Winrar with Explorer killed) in order to avoid Explorer issues, if I ever want to move the files in the future without needing to kill Explorer all the time to do so .
Using WinRAR works for me. Using the cmd function becomes complicated when I cannot rename my file with the rename command".

Can you stop the service manually? I would suggest stopping the service, setting it Manual or Disabled, rebooting, and then run the uninstaller again. Hopefully you won't have to resort to uninstalling the service manually.

Let's try the following user tip with that one:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package ..." error messages when installing iTunes for Windows

  • I get the following error message when trying to download ITunes on my computer running Windows XP - Error writing to file: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple Application Support\CFNetwork.dll

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
