Cannot delete file - tried everything - file in use by Windows Explorer error

Hi - I have tried now for 2-3 hours trying to delete an .mkv file from my "Downloads" folder
It says the file is in use by Windows Explorer and cannot be deleted
I have tried deleting it using Del command prompt as me and as Administrator (I am the Admnistrator, there are no other users) - no luck
I have tried Safe Boot and then deleting - no luck
I have tried rebooting many times and then deleting - no luck
Any ideas? It's driving me nuts

hi to all who have this bug- "file in use by Windows Explorer error"
this is the only way that it works:
1.type cmd in search box
2.go to the drive and the directory the file is in ,for example:
after you type cmd you have a black screen with c:\user\
type in the drive the file is in and hit enter example - d: than hit enter
than you should see d:\>
now click the directory the problem file is in ,for example i will call the directory "movies"  type in this-   cd movies
now you will see this d:\movies>
to delete the file type this:  del filename.mkv (dont forget the .mkv or any other file extension) don't hit enter yet, first open task manager (cntrl+shift+esc) go to process tab than right click on explorer.exe choose and click on end process
now your desktop should disappear. get back to the "cmd" window and hit enter.
now the file is deleted. now go back to the task manager and click on "file" on the upper left corner then on new task then type in "explorer.exe"
and you are done
please note that the file name you choose to delete cant be with spaces between the letters .if so you will need to change it in the same way in the cmd window only the comand will be instead of "del filename.mkv"(for example) after you are in the
right drive and directory:
rename "test space.mkv" testspace.mkv
hope i helped
this is the only way it workes
Instead of running a CMD prompt and typing everything, just start up Winrar or Winzip, kill Explorer, then delete problem MKV files to your hearts content within Winrar or Winzip.
Winrar and Winzip will navigate your folders as well.
After you are done, create a new Explorer task.
or.....   if you need to rename MKV files, just rename them within Winrar/Winzip with Explorer not running.
I change the MKV extension to AVI (in Winrar with Explorer killed) in order to avoid Explorer issues, if I ever want to move the files in the future without needing to kill Explorer all the time to do so .
Using WinRAR works for me. Using the cmd function becomes complicated when I cannot rename my file with the rename command".

    I would like to use the windows explorer open dialog box instead of the adobe open dialog box. How can I change that?

    The top screenshot is the Windows Open dialog box. All File > Open... commands in all Windows programs bring it up.   Try File > Open in Notepad for example.
    It belongs to Windows not Adobe. You cannot change this because there is no such thing as an Adobe Open dialog box.
    The bottom screenshot is Windows Explorer. It is Windows' OS File Browser, not an Open dialog.  It is not called up by Photoshop or any Windows program.
    You have to click on "My Computer" or a Folder icon to get to it. You can double-click a psd, jpeg or other image file in the Explorer window so that it opens in Photoshop.

  • How to restrict "Open Applications" window from showing C drive? Or use the Windows Explorer "Open" Window?

    Hi, Im new to JDeveloper and I work in a school which requires restriction of the C: Drive. Does any one know how I can either stop the "Open Applications" dialog from showing this drive or Use the Windows Explorer "Open" dialog window to browse files, the drive has been hidden and restricted using GPO but JDeveloper shows the C: drive?
    Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi and thanks Timo. We are using 12c. On the Windows side of things, we are using Win7 and we have hidden the drives we don't want the user to see using GPO but obviously Jdev then shows these drives in its "Open Applications" Window and allows access. As far as the environmental variable is concerned this is something that I put in place.
    Many thanks for your reply and the link to the tech doc.

    Help with Adobe.premiere.elements12. Please
    It would appear under the organizer tab that the photos are organised in the lowest folder in the folder structure within Windows Explorer.  How can I use the Windows Explorer structure to organise the photos within Elements.

    In a situation such as yours, I tend to consolidate items into folders so I have folders of nice workable numbers of images, somewhere between 20 and 200 images. Now, whatever, once you've imported, do your moving within LR, not the OS! I will select all in a folder and drag into a folder a level or two or three above, and then delete the newly empty subfolders. I hope this helps a bit!
    Once you've reached just new Imports of camera output, you'll be flying along.

  • Pages 5.1, tried everything, file won't open. Need it to open or my MA is gone

    Ok.. so I created a document using Pages like 1 month ago and saved it on iCloud...
    Then I started typing... and typing... and typing... (and saving obviously).
    Everything was OK until a couple of hours ago - and the I panicked...
    The file didn't open... Around 60 pages gone...
    Tried everything and the darn thing always says "[NAME] can't be opened"
    I have no idea if I created the file using Pages 5 or 5.1... right now I have Pages 5.1 because I'm guessing it auto-updated when it got released.
    I took the file off iCloud, I have it now on my Desktop - still won't open.
    Created several copies and started messing with the Package Contents - still won't open.
    Uploaded it again to iCloud - still won't open.
    Took it off iCloud (again), erased all my files from iCloud (using the Systems Preferences) - still won't open.
    Sent a copy to my iPad, updated my iPad's Pages, tried to open the file - still won't open.
    Uninstalled Pages, re-installed it again - still won't open.
    To be honest I really don't mind re-typing the entire thing... therefore, is there anyway that I can (somehow) open the thing or export it to PDF or JPEG or whatever?????... I just don't wanna do the entire analysis from scratch.
    Or is anybody there that can help - maybe you can somehow open the file, export it to PDF and email me the PDF...???
    // Help :'(
    Cheers

    Thanks Ricardo
    I got the file. It is unopenable in Pages 5.1.
    I opened the package and did a bit of research on the Net as to the problems/solutions (basically none) for the .iwa format.
    I tried to disassemble and reassemble the package but it still wouldn't open.
    1. I take it you are fine with the images which I had no trouble opening.
    2. The preview file is just the cover as 3 sizes of .jpg
    3. I was able to get into the Document.iwa file inside the Index.zip and recognised snippets of Spanish and numerical bits probably from your tables/charts. If you want to do the same, and might be able to recognise some of it, use TextWrangler or similar Texteditor.
    I couldn't find much in the Tables .iwa files or other files.
    You didn't by any chance password (encrypt) the document?

  • I do not have permissions to trash files – tried everything

    When I try to delete a .jpg in Adobe Bridge CS4 or in Finder, the former says I do not have permissions, the latter requires me to enter the admin password. In fact, trying to delete any file in Finder requires the admin password.
    This started happening in Snow Leopard, and continues following my upgrade to Lion. Extremely annoying!
    Tried and failed 1
    Cmd-I (Get info) on my home drive and resetting permissions.
    Tried and failed 2
    Using Terminal whilst logged in to reset permissions over Trash, namely:
    sudo chown your_user_name .Trash
    Tried and failed 3
    Turn on the Mac whilst holding down cmd + R. You can let go once you see a spinning dial. You will then see the ”Mac OS X Utilities” screen.
    On the top menu, click Utilities, then click Terminal.
    Type resetpassword and press Enter.
    Click on your main hard drive.
    In the dropdown box under “Select the user account” make sure to select your username.
    Underneath where it says “Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs”, click the Reset button.
    Tried and failed 4
    Upgrading to Lion.
    Tried and failed 5
    Going to make a cup of tea.
    Tried and failed 6
    Really hoping really hard.
    Any ideas? I've invested two hours on this support forum so far, but can find nothing else to try.

    Thanks for the suggestion Eric.
    This fault appeared when I was running Snow Leopard, and the upgrade to Lion didn't fix it. May I ask what makes you think having another go at installing Lion would do it?
    Saying that, I've found this article, Volume corruption may cause permissions problems in OS X, recommending I reformat the disk drive and then reinstall Lion. Sounds a bit drastic and onerous just to fix this little (albeit annoying) problem!
    Worth a go? Or shall I wait another couple of days to see if anyone comes up with a simpler fix here?!

  • Can't open JAR files - tried everything

    Hi guys.
    So, I have this problem that I can' open .jar files. I'm getting this: "Java JAR-file could not start"
    I have literally tried EVERYTHING.
    This is what I have tried:
    Uninstall, reinstall, restart Mac between every installation, have newest Java now (Java Standard Edition. Version 7 Update 67 (build 1.7.0_67.b01).
    Tried this command: java -jar myfile.jar. This results in Unable to access .jarfile
    Have googled and found a recent thread about this here on apple forum which lead to following this tutorial on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV3npU1NbHQ&feature=youtu.be&html5=1 which did not work either.
    Console does not give me much when I try to open, but one time I got this:
    04.10.14 00:01:48,571 java[554]: objc[554]: Class JavaLaunchHelper is implemented in both /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java and /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/lib/jli/./libjli.dylib. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
    PLEASE help guys! I'm dying, this is so annoying, I really need to open the file.
    Thanks in advance!

    same happens with Yosemite (10.10)
    double clicking on a jar file I get 'The java JAR file "forge-1.7.10-10.13.2.1231-universal.jar" could not be launched'
    if I try javaws -viewer
    I get:
    objc[12654]: Class JavaLaunchHelper is implemented in both /Library/Internet Plug-ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java and /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/lib/jli/./libjli.dylib. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
    if I remove the library /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/lib/jli/./libjli.dylib the message disappears but still is impossible to run jar files
    if I remove /Library/Internet Plug-ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java nothing happens anymore.
    embarassing situation...

  • Cannot delete or edit Illustrator files

    When I attempt to save changes to an Illustrator file, or delete the file, an error message says this cannot be done because the file is being used by another person or program. I've used AI10 for a couple of months, but this problem just started happening yesterday.
    What is causing this, and how can I fix it?
    I am running Windows XP Professional, but have read of this problem happening with other OS.

    After poking around a bit, I found that the problem seems to be connected to the thumbs.db file, which also refuses to be deleted. So I created a new folder and copied all but the thumbs file into this one, and turned on the Do Not Cache Thumbs function. The copied files can now be edited and saved. If I hadn't wanted to turn Thumbs off, I suppose I could have created a separate folder just for the files handled by Illustrator, and never used thumbnail view.
    Although I haven't uncovered the root cause yet, this is a quick fix to help me finish my project at least.
    I will look into the other possible causes when I get a chance, but after a quick look, my printer settings are the same as always, and although some of the files have a dash or underscore in them, I've got hundreds of files like that and haven't experienced a problem before (not to say that's impossible, just not likely).

  • Can New Java 7 File API Path Objs Be Used For Windows Virtual Folders

    Hello,
    I'm trying to duplicate a JFileChooser's drop-down list containing root directories of the file system. For Windows machines, its combobox lists the roots in a nice tree-like layout. For example:
    + Desktop
      + Computer
        + Local Disk (C:)
        + Data (D:)I cannot find an offical way to do this; I ended up using a class called "ShellFolder" to do it. Based on the "File" objects returned by the "ShellFolder" operation, I wanted to use the "toPath" method of the "java.io.File" object to convert the object to a "java.io.file.Path" object. Unfortunately, when I try to convert it, a java.nio.file.InvalidPathException" occurs.
    Therefore, is there a way to use the the new Path object (provided by Java7's new File NIO APIs) that can map to Windows special virtual folders (like "My Computer" which is mapped to a CLSID like "::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}")?
    Note: It looks like NetBeans suffered from the same problem. See their bug report here: [https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=214011] .
    Here's some sample code to reproduce the problem:
    static public void main(final String[] asArguments)
         javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
              @Override
              public void run()
                   java.io.File homeFile = FileSystemView.getFileSystemView().getHomeDirectory();
                   System.out.printf("File obj for home dir = %s\r\n", homeFile.getAbsolutePath());
                   java.nio.file.Path homePath = homeFile.toPath();
                   System.out.printf("Path obj for home dir = %s\r\n", homePath.toString());
                   // get the root directories
                   java.io.File[] rootDirs = (java.io.File[]) sun.awt.shell.ShellFolder.get("fileChooserComboBoxFolders");
                   for (int nIdx = 0; nIdx < rootDirs.length; nIdx++) {
                        java.io.File nextRoot = rootDirs[nIdx];
                        System.out.printf("File obj for next root dir = %s\r\n", nextRoot.getAbsolutePath());
                        // Is this a bug?
                        //          When we encounter a special Windows folder,
                        //          like "My Computer" which has a filename of "::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}",
                        //          why do we receive a "java.nio.file.InvalidPathException"?  Should it not resolve the path
                        //          to the virtual Windows folder of "My Computer", just like the java.io.File objects do?
                        //          If not, is there an alternative way to get that information using the new Java 7 File APIs?
                        java.nio.file.Path nextRootPath = nextRoot.toPath();
                        System.out.printf("Path obj for next root dir = %s\r\n", nextRootPath.toString());
                   } // for
              } // run
    } // mainEdited by: RhinoGuy on Aug 10, 2012 11:11 AM

    Hmm don't know about special folders but the File object does have a listRoots() method. Perhaps that only returns mapped drives on Windows though, I remember using it to create my own Eclipse type filechooser which I find a lot more user-friendly than the standard JFileChooser.

  • How can I convert an outlook pst file to mac mail without using a windows based computer

    I recently bought the new iMac as my older Windows based computer crashed with a bad motherboard.  I have been trying to find a way to convert Outlook 2007 pst files to Mac Mail without the need to use a Windows based computer since all I have now is a Mac.  I have the copies of the pst files on my Mac, so I am looking for the most efficient way to convert them to the format that I can then open them in the Mac Mail.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi - thanks for the instructions but where do you get the option for Quicktime. If I do File - Export I only get the options for File name, place and size but no option that allows to select quicktime:-(
    Have you got any more tips?

  • Download older version of a file from SharePoint Document Library using CSOM and 404 error

    Hi,
    I am trying to download previous versions including Major and Minor versions of documents from SharePoint Online using CSOM. I get 404 error when I try to download the file. I found several posts on various discussion forums where people are getting same
    error but none of those have any solution/answer. Below is one of the threads and sample code I have tried that results in 404 error. If I use the link in browser directly, I am able to download the file. Also I am able to download the current version of file
    using CSOM without any problem, it is only the older versions that give me 404 in CSOM.

    Hi,
    According to your description,
    I know you want to get older version of a file from SharePoint Document Library using Client Object Model.
    The following code snippet for your reference:
    public void GetVersions()
    ClientContext clientContext = new ClientContext(“http://SPSite”);
    Web site = clientContext.Web;
    clientContext.Load(site);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    File file = site.GetFileByServerRelativeUrl(“/Shared Documents/mydocument.doc”);
    clientContext.Load(file);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    ListItem currentItem = file.ListItemAllFields;
    clientContext.Load(currentItem);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    FileVersionCollection versions = file.Versions;
    clientContext.Load(versions);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    if (versions != null)
    foreach(FileVersion _version in versions)
    Console.WriteLine(“Version : {0}”,_version.VersionLabel);

  • Previous Recipients will not delete - have tried everything

    I've removed from Previous Recipients list in the address line, in the drop down menu... I have removed the email addresses from the Address Book and still they keep coming back.  On several occasions I'll delete it repeatedly from all areas and it keeps coming back as if I did nothing... Hi... As mentioned, I have tried everything - probably about 30 times... Have removed from Menu/Window/Previous Recipients, removed from Mail address, removed from contacts...

  • How can I get my files back in their proper folders in Windows Explorer?

    For over 10 years I have meticulously put my photos in folders according to month, event.  So a folder is in directory labeled 2013, with
    I've successfully used Adobe Bridge to browse, edit, final edit in Photoshop.
    Now I use Lightroom and everything is put into a Lightroom Catalog with weird numbers on the folders and all my pictures have vanished from my carefully created folders on Windows Explorer?
    How do I put the pictures back to where they were - short of going to my backup files.
    Also since using Lightroom, Photoshop is hanging saying it is waiting for Network I/O threads - so I cannot save (on my own disk - why Photoshop CC should look at the network for every task beats me - I had about 5 threads waiting on the network).
    All I'm trying to do is find my best 12 pictures from 2013 to make a Christmas letter and I've already spent a whole evening trying to get this to work.
    Is this how Lightroom works, or is it a terrible bug, or is there an option to not move the original files when making a Lightroom catalog?
    I am a single user, so don't need sharing, network, workflow.
    I only want Lightroom to Point to my files, not to move them.  Maybe I should go back to Bridge?

    I discovered a wonderful blog that explained:
    Lightroom is a database and it holds the pictures
    Bridge is a browser that browses files on the disk
    I'm getting used to Lightroom, even though I have many pictures because I organize them and only look at recent ones, it does seem that Bridge is better for me - so I am not locked into Adobe's database.
    All is clear now - except Photoshop is hanging a bit - maybe graphics driver or memory problem. Sometimes it works, sometimes it seems to time out.

    Bill,
    I know your case well. It comes with the Antec SL350, which has enough power for your system.
