If you still experience permission problems, right-click on the downloaded installer and select Run as Administrator. -
ipod touch for Christmas, but cannot get started: after installing itunes, when connecting to my laptop I get no instruactions, just the error message "This iPod cannot be used because the Aplle Mobile Device service is not started". Any suggestions???

When i0S7 was installed on iphone all purchased apps disappeared. Now when I go to app store I can open app, but cannot get app to install on phone. How can I get apps installed back onto iphone screen?
Press your home button, then scroll the home screen all the way over to the right. I found all my purchased apps were moved to a different home screen. Might be a similar issue.. let us know what you found out!!

I have downloaded 10.5.8 combo several times and cannot get it to install because the disc won't mount or the installation gets hung up after restart. My current os is 10.5.1, and I am trying to upgrade to snow leopard. This is on a dual core macbook pro.
You don't need to update to Leopard 10.5.8 unless you want to keep Leopard. Upgrading to Snow Leopard requires that your purchase the retail install disk.

It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:

If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.

Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very [i]first[/i] thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.

To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

I kept getting an error message said to uninstall and reinstall. I uninstalled....as a repair would not open Itunes back up. Now I cannot get Itunes to reinstall. HELP

Windows cannot read the application install dvd
hi i finished installing windows on my macbook pro. i m at the step where ur supposed to put the application dvd to finish the installation. but it says that the disk is damaged and something like that and windows cannot read it. but when i try to read the disk under mac os it works. i do not know what the problem is. thanks

Did you want to deploy the product key in unattend file? please try to move the product key node in the unattend file, please note backup this .xml file before editing.
If there are not bulk servers to activate, I recommend you can use "slui" to manually enter product key after install.

Cannot get Tiger to install on second drive of my G4
Hi all,
I have a G4(PCI Graphics) that has a 10GB drive (original)
as the Master (addr 0) and a 40GB at Addr 1. I have OS 9.1
on the slave (addr 1) drive and have wiped the addr 0 drive
clean. I want to put Tiger on the addr 0 drive, but the
installer does not show that drive as a valid install drive.
I can boot on that drive and use it fine as an OS 9.1 system
but I can't get the Tiger install to see it.
Is there some voodoo here that needs to be done to get
this to work? If this just isn't supported (silently) then
I've wasted my money on the install AND the extra I had to
pay to get CD-ROM install media.
Can some one help me out here?I'm pretty sure this would work. But I don't think that it would be a good way to preserve the data and programs already on my OS9.1.1 drive.

Insert the Tiger Install Disk 1 in your optical
drive, then restart the computer. Immediately after
the chime press and hold the "C" key down until the
computer starts up from the CD.
1. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from
the installer's Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select desired hard drive (this is
the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main
window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown
menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.)
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if
supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait
until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the
sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled,
if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the
Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will
take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the
drive size.
Now that the drive has been properly prepped, quit DU
to return to the installer and proceed with the Tiger
installation. I believe now when you get to the
point of selecting the destination the drive you want
will be available.
I would caution here that a 10 GB drive is awfully
small for OS X. Were I you I would switch things
around and install OS 9 on the small drive and OS X
on the large one. -
Windows cannot get in my wireless
I have a macbook pro and my router is WRT310N. My brother cannot connect his Windows computer to my internet with the password I used with my Macbook Pro. His iPhone and IpodTouch can connect fine. It seems anything from Apple can connect but anything from Windows cannot connect to it. The password for my WEP is just $ and home phone numbers. (i.e. $7145566534) is there a problem with this kind of password? Please help.

Also, in the Router Password column, I have ...........(dots) But I never had to put in any password when I get in the router's IP address to see the setting. Does that mean I don't really have any password? The default password for the router is admin, but the number of dots in the router password is more than the total digits of admins.
