Windows installer puts files in system32

Some articles (about tomcat for example) speak about the importance of the java_home variable.
Setting it to the installation root directory enables you to choose which vm use.
Actually windows installer ver. 6 update 4 puts 4 files in system32 directory: java.exe, javaw.exe, javaws.exe, java.cpl.
This means that each installation is not 'self-contained' in his directory (C:\program files\java\jdk...) and there is a 'default' version "system-wide".
Moreover, the installer does not set any java_home variable.
The question is: is this approach based on java_home specific to the integration with tomcat or is it a java standard but it's left to the user?

Installing a JRE place the files you mentioned in the system32 directory - so, the last installed JRE's files overwrite any copies placed by earlier installs. If you delete these files, then [usually] you can't run java by typing just "java"
Installing the JDK doesn't place files in the system32 directory.
The computer's PATH environment variable [usually] lists the system32 directory before any other directory that contains these files, so they're the ones executed. If you change the PATH so that some other directory [if any] that contains these java files is listed before system32, then the other directory's files will be found first and executed.
In other words, Java doesn't control which are executed, your computer's os does.

  • Unable to install itunes 10.5 after update issue. "windows installer package error"

So when the update for itunes happened, it wiped my ipod, and then my ipod would not work with itunes. So I uninstalled itunes and tried to reinstall it and it gives me that error message. "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I have tried all the fixes from deleting everything to running command prompts. I think i tried everything.
Method 1: Right click on the setup file and, from the drop down menu, select 'run as administrator'
Method 2: Open command prompt in elevated mode and, then unregistered and re-register Windows Installer.

       • msiexec /unregister
       • msiexec /regserver

    Thanks.

I should have posted this earlier, but anyway. I restored my laptop to factory version after backing up any useful data, and the first thing I the laptop was restored was connect to the internet, download and install the latest version of iTunes. And Bingo! It worked.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro - FTP.exe not able to put file to FTP Server

    Hi
We have replaced our Windows XP environment to Windows 8.1 Pro. Now I have problem with sending files through FTP to very old devices. Devices are runninng FTP Servers. Each time I try to "PUT" file on Windows 8.1 I receive message after some time:
    "Connection closed by remote host"
If I make the same on Windows XP file is stored on FTP successfully.
From Windows 8.1 I am able to upload software only via Filezilla, but I need command line solution like FTP.exe or ncFTP.exe (non of them are able to stor file)
I have observed in Wireshark, that ftp.exe sends about 80kB of data, waits for some time and then it stops.
    Summary of my problem:
    Source Appl
    Destination
      Status
    Win XP ftp.exe
    FTP Server upload ok
    Win 8.1 ftp.exe
    FTP Server upload failed
    Win 8.1 ncFTP.exe
    FTP Server upload failed
    Win 8.1 filezilla
FTP Server upload ok (but no command line solution)
    Win 8.1 environment:
    - standard installation of Windows 8.1 with newest Microsoft patches
    - firewall ports - opened for inbound and outbound traffic
    - no antivirus
    FTP Server on problematic devices:
    - old FTP Server, transfer in passive mode
I need command line solution tu upload files. Now I am not able to upload 1500 devices as we don't have Windows XP anymore.
What I have observed, when I type "PUT file" it takes about 20-30 seconds to start transfer on Windows XP or through filezilla.
Is there any problem with timeout in Windows 8.1 when it transfer files to old FTP server (working in passive mode)?
    Thanks and regards,
    Marcin

  • Windows Installer repair issue for per-user folders/files

    Intro:
I have doubts that this is the right place to ask about this, since this issue has existed for me on many windows platforms, please suggest where this should be forwarded if this is an inappropriate place to ask.
Please do not be confused by the directory paths for XP, this issue is also true for Windows 7.
    Description:
Windows Installer does not repair files in per-user directories, such as [AppDataFolder], when initial installation is performed using system account (for example - distributing the package through SCCM or using psexec) and repairing under a user with administrative
privileges (limited user repair works fine).
    Example.
.msi installation installs a custom .xml configuration file to "[AppDataFolder]". We're installing .msi by using psexec /s. log output:
    MSI (s) (D8:F0) [15:19:01:214]: Executing op: FileCopy(SourceName=SETTIN~2.CON|customXML,SourceCabKey=customXML,DestName=customXML,Attributes=16384,FileSize=2633,PerTick=32768,,VerifyMedia=1,,,,,CheckCRC=0,,,InstallMode=58982400,HashOptions=0,HashPart1=-1992414570,HashPart2=1238809189,HashPart3=-80616146,HashPart4=146746036,,)

    MSI (s) (D8:F0) [15:19:01:230]: Note: 1: 2318 2: c:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\customXML
When a user with administrative credentials accesses the advertised shortcut repair is run on the component that has the .xml configuration file, event viewer has an entry about this.
The verbose repair log file shows the following entry:
    MSI (s) (D8:E4) [15:22:27:667]: Executing op: FileCopy(SourceName=SETTIN~2.CON|customXML,SourceCabKey=customXML,DestName=customXML,Attributes=16384,FileSize=2633,PerTick=32768,,VerifyMedia=1,,,,,CheckCRC=0,,,InstallMode=16908288,HashOptions=0,HashPart1=-1992414570,HashPart2=1238809189,HashPart3=-80616146,HashPart4=146746036,,)
    MSI (s) (D8:E4) [15:22:27:667]: File: c:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\customXML;
    Won't Overwrite; Won't patch;
Existing file is unversioned and unmodified - hash matches source file
    Limited user repair log reads:
    MSI (s) (78:8C) [15:26:27:406]: Executing op: FileCopy(SourceName=SETTIN~2.CON|customXML,SourceCabKey=customXML,DestName=customXML,Attributes=16384,FileSize=2633,PerTick=32768,,VerifyMedia=1,,,,,CheckCRC=0,,,InstallMode=16908288,HashOptions=0,HashPart1=-1992414570,HashPart2=1238809189,HashPart3=-80616146,HashPart4=146746036,,)

    To be installed; Won't patch;
    No existing file
Your suggestions will be very much appreciated.

    Hello,
Did you ever get to the root cause of this?
I have a similar problem with a custom XML that is reported as "empty or is not a xml file." in the logs.
Wondered if you had found the root cause?
    Kind regards,

You can check the home page setting:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
