Windows or Mac for programming?
I am in a dilemma that several people who are starting to gain footing in programming skills face when they begin to grow. Hoping to gain the advice from people that have been to the same choice, what is the best choice for a developer that would like to program using Xcode and other Apple environments, and also likes to game and use CAD software? Thanks in advance for your time and input. Thanks in advance for your time and input.
Each OS/Vendor has built an ecosystem of tools related to what their forte is.
Apple has Xcode which spans OS X and iOS.
Oracle has Java and their Netbeans IDE. There is Eclipse and many Java-based environments.
Linux has LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) and any number of IDEs which support them.
For CAD stuff, Autodesk has been around for quite a while.
Gaming consoles tend to be proprietary and closed, like PS3, Xbox, Nintendo.
There are cross-platform migration tools which can build a portable game, or binary code emulators, that can translate (sometimes inefficiently).
You may have to make a choice with a long-term career in mind in this field of endeavor.

My tesm develops .net applications that must support many browsers and we need access to download older versions of FireFox for windows and mac computers, so that we can test our application prior to rolling out a new version.

Firefox 3.6 also contains security vulnerabilities; it stopped being supported on April 24.

If you can't run the latest version because your system doesn't meet the requirements, it's highly recommended that you use another browser that is secure. TenFourFox is a third-party build of Firefox that is kept up-to-date and runs on Mac OS X 10.4 and PowerPC Macs (as a side note, I've never seen the site go down; whatever problems James noticed 9 months ago must've been a fluke).

Windows or Mac for photography and personal work
Hi,
I'm new to mac and have been a windows users all these years. I'm looking to buy a new Mac for the first time. I have other apple products like Ipad & Iphone too.
I'm working as a IT manager as a main profession. But im a photography hobbist with more interest in landscape photography, travel and family pictures too. I do lot of Photoshop & Lightroom works. I dont earn money for my photography. I do spend a lot of the time in front of my computer online like internet browsing, social media..etc.
I need some advice. The below are my question.
1. What is the best time to buy a new Mac? Should i wait till apple releases their new 2014 models?
2. When apple releases their new Mac products every year?
3. For my needs do i need to go for 13" MBP or 15" MBP?
4. I shoot lot of pictures every week. Not sure will mac be good option to backup all my pictures from my camera just like a windows PC.
5. Should i buy a cheaper windows PC (i5 with HD IPS display refurb for under $500) mainly for photography work and plus another 13 MBP retina for my regular light work? This will cut down the cost little bit.
6. Should i just buy just one high end version of 15" MBP with i7,16GB & 512SSD for all my personal use ?
7. If i buy a new MBP retina now, will i be able to uprade the SSD later? Does the new 2013 macs support upgrading the hardware?
I would Appreciate your valuable inputs and your time as well.
Thanks in advance,In order (for the ones I feel I can answer):
1. Buy it when you feel it meets your needs. As an IT manager, I am sure you are aware how futile it is to chase the latest and greatest.
2. No one here can predict when (or ever) Apple will make hardware or software releases. In fact, speculation on those things here is forbidden by the TOU.
3. Matter of preference. Bigger screens are nice I had a 27" iMac and loved it.
4. Backing up on a Mac is seamless (Time Machine). EVERYTHING is backed up. I am cautious so I also make bootable clones in addition to using Time Machine.
5. I would not, but my opinion of "cheap" PCs running Windows is very low.
6. Only you should make that decision. A recommendation here would be just another opinion.
7. Yes. A friend of mine did that using a certified third party manufacturer. I always buy from Apple as I am hardware challenged.
Barry
Edit: about # 7 -Clinton is correct, I am sure. My friend has a non-retina model.

Newbie asks: Windows or MAC for development?
I have a MacBook Pro that I love to use. But before I download the Cold Fusion Developer Application for MAC, I see that SQL Express is Windows..
Now, If I were to do Parallels on my MAC (Dual Core) would this work? I have a Window XP desktop that I can use for this, but I really would like to stay with my MAC. But I don't know if the SQL database will be accessible across the dual core platform by Cold Fusion.
Should I just go Windows XP? Or can I go MacBook Pro...........As iilsac says as long as CF, the database and your machine can all see each other on the same network there's absolutely no reason this won't work. There's nothing to stop you having ColdFusion, SQL, FTP and your IDE all running on completely different machines if you wanted to, but there comes a point where it's unnecessarily complicated.
Generally I prefer to do my development on a PC purely because, as you say, many of the tools are Windows-only, and I'd rather work locally than on a VM. That's purely personal preference mind, there's no right and wrong answer.
O.
PS except that MAC *is* wrong, it's a Mac -
I want to change from windows to mac for cs5
I bought the upgrade for lightroom 5 and found I needed Windows 7 which I did not have. Thought now would be the time to change to Mac. How can I swap formats on the photoshop CS5 license I currently have?
Hi Marionneedshelpplease,
There shouldn't be any problem while upgrading and switching the OS.Please go through this link : http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/order-product-platform-language-swap.htm l
If you want to upgrade from CS5 Win to CS5.5 or CS6 MAC, you can do that. Its called Cross Platform Upgrade.
But as Bob mentioned, you need to contact adobe for that. It cannot be done online from adobe website.
For the best assistance, I recommend our chat support at http://adobe.ly/yxj0t6. Our chat representatives can provide a personalized experience to resolve the issue you have described.

Has anyone got any thoughts or have you yourself purchased the MBP with Retina display and added the dual boot system with windows?
I desperately need to update my gear and want a MBP.
I'm a full time photographer at my local paper and freelance photographer - use computers A LOT, and only use windows. I've experienced mac and know I prefer it, the way it runs pleases me a whole lot more and for the amount i'm processing/working I need something that will keep up.
With 12 years of photoshop gear loaded up for all my photo processing etc, I'm wanting to add Windows and have use of both. Windows would run photoshop that I had already purchased some time ago - question is, how will it run? what will the display be like running Windows on Mac with the retina display?
I use CS4 at the moment and can't afford to upgrade to CS6 just yet, plus i'd waste a lot of what I already have by starting again on Mac. I'd use Mac for everything else, need the use of Windows for portions of what I do.
About to head to Canada and want to get set up for the road. Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks heaps! There are some drawbacks, running Windows 7 (only) on a Mac via Bootcamp yields less than stellar results, especially with the Retina display.
And of your traveling, the Mac's high power needs (especially the Retina display) and lack of removable battery are going to be a serious issue. The Retina display is glossy, not ideal for viewing on the road and in varied environments.
CS4 won't run on the OS X version that comes with a Mac, so your looking at purchasing CS6.
Support for Windows is more widespread than for Mac's, also if you ever need to redownload OS X to fix a issue, requires a fast reliable Internet connection of the broadband kind.
If your running Windows on your Mac, you can expect to be on your own and not get support as easily as if you were running it on a regular PC.
If you can't afford to keep up with CS upgrades, then you shouldn't be considering a Mac because there are more paid upgrades on that than on Windows 7, it's like a annual nightmare.
IMMO your still better off on a decent, 1920 x 1080 res, matte screen, removable battery (with extras), Win 7 Pro i7 machine (Pro+ runs XP programs) which will stay like it is and get security updates until 2020.
OS X changes every year and if you don't upgrade, + all your third party software, then about 3 years later your left behind for updates.
Also you will have to buy Win 7 to run on your Mac, the OEM disks won't work.
If your trying to budget, then a Mac is certainly not for you. -
Run Windows only program on Mac for without buying windows?
I need to run a windows compatable only program on my mac. I do not own any version of Windows or any virtualPC/Parallels type software.
I don't want to buy windows or anything for that matter.
What do I do?
Also, I'm not super smart on computers, so please reccomend something that someone only slightly smarter than the average layman can do.
Thank-youThere may be a Mac equivalent that you don't know about. What program is it that you want to run? Someone here might know of a Mac program that you can use instead.

I need to run windows program's like word and excel and PowerPoint etc on my mac for college , how can I do it?
You can install Office for Mac
You can install Windows using Boot Camp Assistant then install Office for Windows in your Windows installation
You can install Windows and Office for Windows using a virtual machine like Fusion, Parallels, or VirtualBox -
I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.
I am currently using Photoshop Elements 8 on Windows 7. After several years of use, I am self taught and adequately proficient for an amateur. What I didn't realize (until I started researching my upcoming migration on the Internet) is that I actually use PE8 for two functions: digital asset management and digital editing.
Regarding Digital Asset Management: My research leads me to understand that PE on MAC does not provide the same level of organizational capability that I am used to having on Windows, instead providing Adobe's Bridge which does not look very robust. Furthermore, iPhoto, which come on MAC will not support the hierarchical keyword tagging that I require to organize my library of photos. The two SW applications which I am thinking of switching to are either Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom. Frankly, I'm thinking that it would be smoother to stay within the Apple product line.
So the remaining question is whether Aperture will support my digital editing needs. The tweaks that I do to my photos are not very complex (no, I do not want to put people's heads on other animal bodies). But could someone who uses Aperture tell me whether It will allow me to do the following kinds of edits?:
- If I have a photo where someone's face is too shadowed, can I lighten just that person's face, and leave the rest of the photo as-is?
- if I have a photo where the background is cluttered (eg, 2 people in front of the Parthenon which is undergoing renovation), can I remove just the construction cranes?
- Can it splice together several separate photos to give a panoramic?
If, once I get Aperture, I find that it cannot enable the kinds of editing that I do, I would probably get PE11 in the future. However, if people in this forum tell me that Aperture will definitely not support the kinds of editing which I've described in the previous paragraph, I would prefer to get PE11 with my initial configuration (since someone will be helping me with my migration).
Thanks in advance for your consideration and help!I am concerned, however, about using a non-Apple Digital Asset Manager in OSX. I would really like to avoid integration problems. Is using PE11 to import and catalog my digital photos likely to cause conflicts?
Thanks for any insight on this
Amy,
Not so much conflicts as maybe a little less seamless integration with Apple software and perhaps some third-party software providers in the Mac App Store where some programs build in direct access to iPhoto and Aperture libraries for getting images into those programs easily. Typically, there is a manual command to go to Finder (think Windows Explorer) to browse folders.
One caution to mention however, is that the organization you set-up in PE Organizer is unlikely to transfer over to either iPhoto or Aperture if you decide to change at some point.
The only real stumbling block that I see in your opening comment is that you want hierarchical keywording (Kirby or Léonie can go into the details on keywording limitations as I stay at one level). If you can work with the keywording schemes of either iPhoto or Aperture, then using PE for your external editor (either program supports setting an external editor) would probably be ideal since you know PE well. This is the idea with the Mac App Store version of PE (editor with no organizer).
Note - I use Photoshop CS6 (full version) with Aperture and it works really well. The only downside is that Aperture has to make either a TIFF or PSD file to send to an external editor so that the original file is protected by not sending it to the pixel editor. While TIFF or PSD files protect the integrity of the image information without degrading it, they are typically much larger file sizes on disk than either RAW or JPEG files. Therefore, your library size (iPhoto or Aperture) will balloon quite a bit if you send a lot of files to external editors.
One other possibility for an external editor would be a program called Pixelmator. It is pretty similar to early versions of Photoshop, but built for Mac. Other than the panoramics you want, it will do most pixel editing that PE can do. It is not an organizer, so it is built to go with either iPhoto or Aperture. It does have differences in how you complete certain procedures, so there is bit of a learning curve when you are used to doing it the Adobe way. -
As soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down
Linc,
You keep showing up when I search for this problem so I hope you can help.
I'm having the same issue in Premiere and Media Encoder (but not After Effects). My Mac just restarts itself as soon as video is loaded. I can start Premiere and open a project and go through relinking media, but as soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down.
I've fixed the problem temporarily two times. The first time I was troubleshooting what was wrong and wound up putting in my old video card and after that fixed the problem, I switched back to my GTX 680. I also did a driver update. After doing that I was ok for a few days so I figured it was a driver thing or maybe the card just needed to be reseated. Then when it started acting up again I figured something was going on.
So I started searching again and came across one of your posts that recommended removing CUDA. I did that and it worked perfectly for a week until about 20 minutes ago. Crashed in the middle of an edit and now each time I restart Premiere it crashes as soon as video touches my monitors.
I found this post because I specifically searched for "com.nvidia.web.NVDAResmanWeb(8.2.7)" from my Problem Report.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Darren

How to use an external drive for windows and mac
I recently got an external hard drive (2 TB seagate expansion) and I need to be able to use it with both my mac and my windows computer. I have read numerous forums and tried downloading various third party programs but nothing seems to work! One of the things i have read was to create a partition on the drive, this is easy enough and i did try it so i do have one side i can add stuff from from windows and one side i can add stuff to from my mac but then i cant access the other side. So say i need to get a file from my mac to my windows. I add a file to the mac side of the partition from my mac but then when i plug it into windows i cant retrieve that because its on the mac side of the partition (and vis versa). Is there some sort of easy way around this? or some way in which i can format the drive where i can move files back and forth from windows to mac without any expensive third party programs?
Thanks!
Bryan
PS. I did notice when i originally got the hard drive i had a bunch of files on it that were added from windows. When i plugged it into my mac i could see and copy these files but i could not add new files. Is there anyway to get around this "read only" type formate if i were to reset my drive back to its factory settings?Three ways to go;
Repartiton the drive (1 partition) as MBR and with FAT32 file system. This is readable and writable by both Mac and Windows, but has a file size limit (which I think is 4GB).
The alternative is to leave the drive formatted as NTFS for Windows (this is not normally writeable from Mac) and employ a third-party software application which can write to NTFS. NTFS-3G, Paragons NTFS for Mac and Tuxera NTFS have all been recommended elsewhere.
Or you can repartition as GUID with HFS+ (Mac OS Extended Journalled) file system. This would not normally be accesible to the Windows machine, but once again there is 3rd-party softwsre available to enable Windows to read and write to it. MacDrive is the only one I'm aware of, but there are probably others. -
i have acquired windows office 2011 for my macbook but unable to open it. There are currently 3 files in the folder, 1 of which seems to be the actual program which is a hfs file. iv tried looking for programs to help me open it but failed.
when double clicking on the image it says unable to open and gives me the option to search the app store.
any help would be much appreciated
AdamWell, first, just make sure it's the Mac version and not the Windows version (which indeed would not run on your Mac). You say "Windows Office" which is why I mention it. I think you probably just mean "Microsoft Office" though.
Next, is this on a disk (DVD), or did you purchase and download it from the Microsoft site?

First off - yay.
In the little amount of time I have had to test, the first thing I notice is that the video out to my ext. monitor seems to lag by a few frames from the program monitor in Pr. AJA support is great in their help, but I'm wondering before I bother them, is anyone else seeing this - is there a setting to be tweaked?
Also, the video out is looking a touch soft to me - I have a Flanders Scientific Grade 1 monitor, so it is not the hardware. I may need to test this a bit more with other footage, but it was my first impression. Wonder if the settings here need to be tweaked as well.
I had visions that Transmit would output the hoverscrub, but it looks like you have to click on the clip and play back before it is displayed exernally. But, on second thought, I don't know how that would be utilized, since the video out would have to suddenly switch every time you hover your mouse over the clips in the bins.
Having said all that, I am thrilled to finally have this driver! -
Windows and Office for Mac in a MacBook Air?
I am planning to buy a new notebook, but I am having trouble deciding between the Macbook Air with 256 GB or 500GB and the MacBook Pro 13''. I am tired of carrying my heavy MacBook Pro 15'' so I want a real shift in portability and I will be running Mail, Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Office for Mac and Windows in Parallels for Explorer, Visio and Project. The issue is that with less money I can buy a MacBook Pro with 750GB but it is heavier and the HD is not solid state. And I am not sure that if I go for the Macbook Air with 256 GB (which is affordable) I will be able to run everything I need.
Someone that may help me decide?Applications do not take up that much space. Here is a partial list of apps on one of my computers:
And there is more. This Applications folder is about 20gB. There are other files that come with these programs, but they take up much less space.
In sum then, you will be fine with 250 gB, of which you will take away say 30 gB for Parallels and its contents.
