Windows partition permissions problem

i have a fat32 partition that i use to be able to see files whenever i'm on windows or linux. my fstab is as follow:
/dev/discs/disc0/part4 /mnt/windows vfat rw,user,auto 0 0
but if i do
[nbcjr@universo ~]$ touch /mnt/windows/lin
touch: cannot touch `/mnt/windows/lin': Permission denied
what's going on?? how do i set this partition to be mounted automatically and to permit any user (or at least my main user) to write any file on it???
thanks!

hi!
i also have a ntfs partition that sometimes i want to get something from. i mount it as read only, but only root has permission to acess it. i don't know how to solve this.
fstab

windows is my fat partition, ntfs is the ntfs one.

  • Windows file permissions problems

We have an Xserve G5 that was running Server 10.3. I upgraded it directly to Server 10.5. Since then, I am having problems with some of our Windows users.
When they create a new folder, it puts them as the owner, but gives them NO rights. I am using ACLs to give full rights to the group that needs access, and also setting the POSIX group rights to read/write. So once they leave that folder, they can no longer get back in. I have SMB set to inherit rights from the parent, and the ACL is set to inherit as well. Other people in the group can access the folder, just not the owner! I change the owner permissions and all is well (for that folder at least). How do I need to set SMB so it follows the inheritance I set?
Once I have the folder set correctly, any new files created there have the POSIX group set to read only. The ACL inherits properly and still has full control. The owner is set correctly, usually. It is not consistent.
Once someone creates a file in any folder, if a Windows user modifies a file someone else created, it changes the owner name and gives them no rights. It also creates a new ACL record. If the original owner was a Mac user, it creates a new explicit ACL with all rights except execute and delete. If the file has ACL records already, it duplicates them and gives whatever rights it feels like (it seems). One new record may say Allow Delete only, and the next one say Allow Read except for execute. The only thing for certain is it will never match the original ACL. It always adds the new ACLs at the top of the list, and the duplicates are grayed out as if they were actually inherited that way. The most 'popular' file I've found so far had 128 "inherited" ACL records!
It is also denying access to some folders that the user has the correct permissions for. For instance, I can create/modify/delete files logged in on the Mac side, but when I log in on Windows, I have problems accessing files/folders. It shows everything as read only. Even if I change the properties in Windows, it will revert back to read-only when I apply the change.
We have a new Xserve that we will be moving the file services to. At that time, all the Windows users will be moved completely to the Mac side - currently the Windows users are accessing the Xserve and a Novell server.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Thy,
Based on my research, the Trusted Installer is a service, for those resources which only allow Trusted Installer to modify, neither Administrator nor System can modify them.
I am wondering that how secure the network and physical environment is that you need to create a GPO to prevent users making permissions changes on system files. These system files normally only can be modified by Administrators,
System or Trusted Installer, which is secure enough when we don’t add users we don’t trust enough to Administrators group.
    >What is the best way to undo this while leaving the audit failures turned on and still retaining the correct permissions on all the files?
As long as administrators on these machines are qualified, you can remove the Group Policy. If not, please don’t make any user you don’t trust as Administrator.
    >What happens to the files that aren't owned trustedinstalled than now have the trustedinstaller default permissions under system32 and syswow64 if I were to remove the gpo?  What file  permissions would be retained?
We should keep the default permissions, if those files weren’t owned by Trusted Installer before, we should change the original owner back, vice versa.

  • MaxDB 7.6 on Windows 7 - permissions problems

    Hi.
I want to install MaxDB on windows 7 so that regular users could control the x_server and issue dbmcli commands.
Currently when I install it, only the administrator can control x_server (start/stop it) - regular users get an access denied error.
In addition, various commands fail with error:
    ERR
    -24994,ERR_RTE: Runtime environment error
1,could not create comm. shared memory [5]
When trying to run them not as administrator.
So, what are the guidelines for installing maxdb under windows 7 regarding permissions?
How can I let regular users do these actions?
    Thanks,
    Doron

    > You're saying there is no way for my application to do this without having admin privileges?
The required privileges had been available to standard users until Windows 2008/Vista.
And, by the way, MaxDB is not released for Vista!
    > Or the dbmcli commands - part of them succeed and part don't. Why is that? I can create a database with regular user privileges but I can't extend it. This does not sound as designed behavior - maybe I'm doing something wrong?
It's just that MaxDB is a server product and is not developed on Windows 7 for end users.
No design bug here, just the standard permissions for end users have changed with Windows 7.
    > (the dbmcli behavior looks suspicious to me because on linux/solaris it works without root privileges).
Ok - this is something completely different here.
Even as member of "Administrators" on Windows 7 you don't have all privileges...
Right now, you've to use these tools as administrator on Windows 7.
While we're at it: if there is a chance that this will be changed/adapted I highly doubt that it would happen for an old release as 7.6.
Go for 7.7 or 7.8 instead.
    regards,
    Lars

  • Windows Partition Problem.....

As I am sure you all have seen this many times before....I've tried looking at other discussion threads to help solve my problem but they either didnt have the exact same problem or I couldnt fully understand the answers.  Myself, Im rather inexperienced with Mac and its OS so Layman's terms usually work best with me.  Im running Leopard right now, whatever the latest version is; 10.6.8 I believe.  I'm trying to run a parallel now since something is apparently wrong with the sound on my XP disk when I installed it, twice.  This has been a long and drawn out process for me please bare with me, for I may ask some stupid questions....
    Ok.
So I've deleted the Windows partition in Boot Camp Assisstant successfully, however, a version on Windows (named: Untitled) is still showing up in my finder and when I hold down the Option key on the start up.  I tried erasing it with Disk Utility, it looked like it started to do something, but all it did was remount it.  Now, when I try to go through BCA its gives me the message: "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." No clue as to what in THEE **** its talking about.  Of course I've tried ejecting it but it doesnt get rid of it nor does it gives me my 99GB of Mac OS back.
Be honest, did I **** up or did I **** up bad somewhere down the line while installing windows? And what (if anything) can I do?
Again, thanks for your time and help in advance.

Sounds like something went wrong when you sued the BootCamp Assistant to remove the Windows partition since usually that also reassigns the used diskpace back to OSX.
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.

  • Problem removing a window partition

today i installed window xp via boot camp, the installation seems fine all the way up until the step 'to install boot camp drivers'. after i inserted the Max OS X disc, it went thru the normal installation...etc. then towards the end i got the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' window and a second saying boot camp is finished. however, at this point the mouse is dead and i am unable to move it. i rebooted it a couple of times, still the mouse is disable.
so, i boot back to Mac OS, open up Boot camp and decided to remove the window partition. i chose 'If your computer has a single internal disk, click Restore'...
then i am at the 'restore disk to a single volume' with the status: partitioning disk spinning...
when i created the window partition i used 15G and i have the unibody macbook with 250G. however, this window's been spinning for the past two hours. i really don't think this should take this long. is this normal?
i do not want to re-install 10.5.5 and do a restore. what is the best way to delete the window partition? i suspect something is wrong with boot camp. what should i do?

There are few things you need to make sure before you remove the federation, like permissions, TXT records etc.

Just installed windows 7 Ultimate using Boot Camp. Problem is when I choose to boot the windows partition, I get the windows icon on the screen showing that it is starting, but few second after, I get a blank screen. I suspect a driver (screen) issue, since I also installed Parallell using the boot camp partition and that works fine.
Do anybody out there has an ideal of what to do to solve this issue.

  • Windows Partition Problems

I have been trying for two days now to install Windows onto my MBP via Boot Camp with varying degrees of success. I wouldn't say the installation part is necessarily the problem, however. I set up a Windows partition through Boot Camp (25 GB) and installed Windows XP onto said partition. Once it's all up and running though, my partition appears to be practically full, despite the fact that by this point I haven't even installed the Windows drivers as provided on the Leopard install disc. Has anyone else run into this problem and have any solutions? Any help would be much appreciated.

Using the Option key to get into OS X? when you do, be sure to set control panel Startup Disk to your OS X volume.
Still has trouble? then zap pram/nvram with the old 4-finger command option p r thru 2 restarts (and starting from a cold boot).
I was under the impression (and some have used Disk Utility to erase their FAT partition to HFS+) that you hadn't removed it with BCA which may have left some nvram boot argument (maybe Apple should warn to "set startup disk to OS X" though in order to delete/remove you have to have booted into OS X anyway...
If it is no longer showing in Disk Utility, its gone, though sometimes you don't recover all the disk storage it used.

  • Windows Partition No Longer Shows Up After Accidental Premature Closing of Camptune

    Mac OS X 10.7.5
I was running Paragon Camptune to expand my Windows 7 partition. The progress bar reached the end and stayed there for about 30 minutes. The Camptune window was then accidentally closed and Camptune quit itself. I restarted the computer but the Windows partition no longer shows up when I try to boot it, only Mac OSX and Recovery Disk. The Bootcamp drive is no longer accessable from System Preferences, and the Bootcamp partition folder is no longer accessable in the Devices area of Finder. Camptune no loner recognizes that there was a partition. Thus, I am no longer able to access the partition's contents or delete it and make a new one.
It would be preferable if I could fix the partition and have it accessable again, however I have no problem with deleting it and making a new partition. Any advice? Thanks for your time.

    Hi Eric,
Bootcamp does show up in the disk utility but it is grey instead of black like the Macintosh HD.
    The following information is available:

What might be the best way to continue to repair it. I do not have the option to click on "verify disk permissions" or "Repair Disk Permissions".
Should I clone the hard drive in the target disk mode??
I'm not the best at this stuff so any more advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Can't create a windows partition

I'm trying to create a windows partition through bootcamp but it refuses to do so because I'm guessing that it's scanning permission that need to be repaired. The message states that I need to run disk utility.
The problem though is, I can't do anything about the permissions cause of a known "bug" (??) on leopard.
It states 3-4 permission need repairing but they can't be repaired. Others have that issue but they probably had windows installed before this happening.
here is an image of disk utility.

Alright I solved the problem. It was a repair disk and a repair permissions check.
    Everything is fine now

  • Trying to Boot Camp with Windows 8.1 Problem

I'm trying to Boot Camp my Mac with Windows 8.1 and have been getting this problem:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved."
I did a search for help with this topic and found 100s of threads with the same problem. However, from what I read it seemed that the problem is that there wasn't enough continuous space to create the partition. I'm skeptical to believe the same is the case with my problem, and if it is then I'm quite disappointed with Apple.
The reason being that I bought and opened this computer literally yesterday (Nov 24th, 2014) it is the latest model MBP 15'' 2.8 Ghz and 16GB of RAM, and 1 TB SSD. I find it hard to believe that in 980 GB of un-used space, boot camp can not find 95 GB (what I'm trying to partition) that are continuous.
I saw that the most common solution to this was doing the whole back up, delete and restore method. Are there any simpler methods that do not require an external hard drive (as I don't currently have one).
Thank you very much in advance to anyone who can help.

Oddly enough, this is what seemed to do the trick,  I've now got a fully working Windows 8.1 partition running on my rMBP:
    Solution:
Finally got this working, thanks to a person named "turbostar" over on discussions.apple.com:
Re-run Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows partition and restore the full Mac HD as a single partition.
Run a PRAM reset (restart, while screen is still black, hold down ⌘+Option+P+R and keep them pressed until you hear the startup sound a second time).
Open disk utility and repair permissions on the Macintosh HD partition. TWICE.
    Start Boot Camp Assistant again.
Seems hokey. With those instructions I thought I would also have to stand on one foot, point to my nose, rub my belly, and hope for rain. But it did end up working.

  • Cannot access Windows Partition after Disk Utility (Mavericks)

Today my Windows partition worked. So I thought, might as well fix the permissions of the drive and also repair the drive for any bootloader problems. Resulted in an error saying "Live file system repair is not supported".
Mavericks still works boots fine. Windows on the other hand, does not appear when holding down the Alt/Option key at boot.
Please, I don't need an official documentation that teaches me how to install Boot Camp correctly, I just need an experienced answer to explain what is going on, don't post just to get points please.

I have this exact same problem. In my case, I had a Boot Camp partition set up and fully working, with Windows 8.1. Then, using Parallels 8, I set up a new VM to use that Boot Camp partition (following some instructions from Parallels that I found online).
After that, Windows felt that disk repairs were needed, but it never successfully repaired them. So I went to disk utility, selected the whole hard drive (not just a partition), and did repair.
This led to the error from Disk Utility: "Error: Live file system repair is not supported." And after that, when I reboot with the Option key held down, the Windows partition no longer is even shown. I hope like h*ll it isn't gone, because I had spent some time getting things setup on it.
    Someone, please help.

  • IMac no longer boots up to windows partition?

    Hi,
I have a problem where my I installed Windows 7 on my iMac and set it to automatically boot up to the Windows partitionwhen turning on the computer. Suddenly, it's not doing that anymore. It boots up to the Apple partition and when I want to choose partitions, I have to hold down "Alt" upon booting up. I've always had to hold down "Alt" to choose partitions so that's not a problem. The problem is it doesn't automatically boot up to the Windows partition, as I originally set it.
Anyone encounter this problem and have any advice?
    Thank you.

On OSX go to System Preferences the Startup Volume and reset your Windows 7 partition to be the default.
On the next reboot it should automatically boot into Windows.
A PRAM-reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1895 can be the cause of this behavior.

  • Windows XP Installation problem on Mac Pro (Early 2009)

I am wanting to install Windows XP on 400GB of my hard drive in Bay 2
I have 2 hard drives in my Mac Pro. The 1st one came pre-installed and I got a 1TB Western Digital SATA and formatted it as Mac OS Journaled. I used The Bootcamp Utility to make a Windows partition on my 2nd hard drive.
Once I do that I insert the Windows XP SP3 install disc to install it and it says it cannot install it because some random file is missing that is a random bunch of letter and numbers and it says I should erase the partition and try formatting it again. While I'm still using the Windows XP install disc I try doing this it does not work and then when I boot back into Snow Leopard the Bootcamp partition is still there.
Is this not possible? Or is the only way to install Windows XP on the hard drive in bay 2 by formatting the entire drive for Windows?

Since the Vista recovery works fine there must be a problem with the XP installation CD created by nLite. And yes this installation CD was not good. I created it with all current Security Patches and with all available Toshiba Satellite A200 Windows XP drivers. Obvisiously i picked up a wrong driver. May a 64-bit one.
    I tried this:
First I created a new Windows XP disc only with the Toshiba Storage Manager driver. This XP Installation works.
Then I created again a Windows XP disc will all Security Patches and all Toshiba Drivers. I doubble checked that I did NOT picked up a 64-bit driver. And this disc works. Thanks all.
