Windows Server 2008 opening ports for sql

Hello we upgraded our server from 2003 to 2008 and we are trying to open up the ports for the sql server and reporting services so the users can access both database and report manager from their desk.  we only have one location so its not like we
need people from different locations accessing it.  but for some reason the users still cant access the database even after opening ports 1433 and 80.  Can anyone help please

Hi
Can you explain why does he need turn off the firewall on prod. server? Running SQL
Browser service make sense if we use named instance, the OP did not mention that. Moreover if we enable SQL Browser
service we probably need to add UDP port 1434 to the firewall.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation for learning purposes.

    Hi to all,
what is the less expensive (and fully legal) way to build a private lab with Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machines to practicing me to take exams for MCSA certification ? I have already terminated the 180-days evaluation period for Windows Server 2008
    R2.
    Many thanks

I've downloaded and installed several different versions of Windows Server many times using the same account and information, if there were a problem with it, I'm sure Microsoft would have raised a concern with me.  You can't really run a business by
tearing down and rebuilding your infrastructure every 6 months, and by installing, using, and learning from evaluation installations, I am just one more able-bodied individual with Windows skills to improve the supportability of their current and future install
base.  My use of those eval products has no real commercial value to Microsoft because I wouldn't pay for it if I had to and I am not using them within a business infrastructure.
Nothing in the evaluation terms of use that I have seen says you can only install it one time, ever, in any environment, and nothing in the delivery and use of the evaluation versions has prevented me from reinstalling.
The bottom line I guess is you have to use your best judgement.  I wouldn't recommend continuously reinstalling to support a real business infrastructure as a way to bypass licensing.  I can't tell you 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt that Microsoft
fully approves of reinstalling an eval for your own personal development needs.  I seriously doubt that Microsoft would spend the time and resources to chase you down for it, though.
And I agree with Milos - you would be better off pursuing a server 2012 certification, for which there are also evaluation versions available.
I hope this post has helped!

  • Windows Server 2008 - Group policy for domain client to start/stop services installed on it

    Hello Experts
I am a newbie to windows server administration , though did a Google  , but ended up with these question with my requirements
    I have created a new domain and 2 client/computer (A & B namely) to domain . Now A & B has tomcat server running with port 8080 , 9090 which i have installed
    domain ADMIN account .
&& now i am want to start/stop/restart services enabled for domain users  !! How do i achieve this !!
basic question : How can i access A & B tomcat services on DOMAIN CONTROLLER server to create a GPO and that are on (A & B)
what is the easiest way to achieve the same , (if not using GPO)???
similarly I am looking for many features : where I want to control the permission to user on (A & B ) like : If the binaries of tomcat is available on machine say : A , if the user can install (now
    it ask for ADMIN credentials)
    Thanks
    Mike~Ed

Controlling services with Group Policy is done under Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\System Services.
The limitation is that system services can only see the services the computer running the Group Policy management console. To access other services, you will either need to create the services on your computer (install the software the adds the service)
or install the remote server administration toolkit (RSAT) on the computer with the service already on it.

  • Adobe Acrobat 9.41 Pro+ on Snow Leopard 10.6.5 + Network users (Windows server 2008) = CRASH!

Adobe Acrobat 9.41 Pro will work “great” on the admin account, however through the active directory log on of network users, every user gets the long crash report upon opening the application.
Permissions are set so “everyone” can gain access, however the crash issue is not a decent setting on the Mac environment.
Will welcome any thoughts..comments… and suggestions.
    Thank you-

    OS: Snow Leopard 10.6.5
Active Directory Setup: Windows Server 2008 - Log in for network users
Adobe Acrobat: version crash 9.3 and 9.4.1
Admin of the Mac computer can log in and use the Adobe Acrobat Professional software, however when a network user
Tries to log on the computer and open the Adobe Acrobat 9.3 or 9.4 the software hangs....for 7-8 seconds then displays a crash report, and options are send to apple.
Permissions on every Adobe Acrobat folder on the computer are set to read/write for every user of the program.
Software Type: Using the DVD purchase with the Education program, and the serial number does accept, and download the software from the Adobe web page.

  • 1. Will CAL Licenses works if i use Windows Server 2012? 2. What GB of RAM can be used with Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition?

I have been using Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition for my business purpose and there are at-least 30 Users who logged in into the server Via Remotely from different location. I want to upgrade my server with latest one with some extra cores and RAM for
better and smooth operations for all users. So, i have a doubt whether my CAL Licenses will works with Windows Server 2012 or i need to purchase the new one for the same?
Moreover, if i don't upgrade my Windows to any 2012 edition and stay on 2008 Standard Edition how much maximum RAM can be installed at a time? is there any limitations? if Yes, please let me know how do i upgrade my Windows 2008 Standard Edition to any other
business edition to avoid such limitations of RAM?
Waiting for your favorable and quick response.

    Hi again,
th eupgrade optiuon from Standard 2008 to Enterprise 2008 was only available for customers with open value contract with activ esoftware assurance then they can purchase the step up license from Standard to Enterprise.
the only way to have the Enterprise 2008 Edition is to make th edowngrad efrom 2012 Standard to 2008 Enterprise. it means that if you purchase the 2012 R2 Standard Edition, you may downgarde to Enterprise 2008/2008 R2. th ebest way to make the downgrade
to 2008 R2 Enterprise is to purchase the current Version 2012 R2 Standard in volume licensing than you can download diretly from VLSC the Enterprise Edition.
with your downgrade you can still using the 2008 CALs.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 - Windows Update Errors...

    Hello,
I've a windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 server that I've applied Windows updates to this evening. A large number were successful, however there are 13 that will not install and keep on failing. I've run sfc/scannow which found and repaired some
errors - restarted server - no difference.
Please see windowsupdate.log output below (apologies for the length). I've tried installing individual updates from the 13 but it makes no difference and the errors are just the same. It seems to be the same error for each update although unfortunately doesn't
mean much to me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks gents.

  • SAP BusinessObjects 4.0 sp2 on windows server 2008 r2

    Hi SAP,
I'm planing to install SAP businessobjects 4.0. There is some thing not clear related to the version of the Operating system.
In the pam documentation released on July 28, 2011 there is written that :
BusinessObjects Enterprise 4.0 SP2,RTM is available for Windows Server 2008 x64 instead for Windows Server 2008 x64 R2 is available only BusinessObjects Enterprise 4.0 RTM .
If I go to the download center I can found only the following CD:
    51041015_1      SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP02 SERVER WINDOWS (64B) 1 of 4
    51041015_2      SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP02 SERVER WINDOWS (64B) 2 of 4
    51041015_3      SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP02 SERVER WINDOWS (64B) 3 of 4
    51041015_4      SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP02 SERVER WINDOWS (64B) 4 of 4
There is no information related to RTM version.
Is it possible to use Windows Server 2008 x64 r2 for SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.0 SP02 ?
    Thank you for your help

    Hi Sebastian,
Thank you for your answer. As you can see in the presentation available on
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/10ccbdf2-139f-2e10-61a0-d4af67b6257b&overridelayout=true
at page 3 only SAP BusinessObjects Server 4.0 RTM is available for windows server 2008 r2 instead for windows server 2008 r2 there is written explicitly that the versions available are   SAP BusinessObjects Server SP02 and RTM.
    Do I understand well?
Has someone already Installed SAP BusinessObjects Server 4.0 sp 02 on windows server 2008 r2?
    Thanks in advance for collaboration.

  • Activating Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 180 Eval after Upgrade from Win2K8R2 Standard

I had a licensed instance of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.  It is an OEM License.
I wanted to try Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise for 180 days without rebuilding the whole machine so I entered "DISM /online /Set-Edition:Enterprise" on the command line and now I can use the enterprise features.
The problem is that I have 30 Days to activate.  When I attempt to activate, it says "Error: 0x8007232B DNS name does not exist"
How can I activate the 180 day trial?

"Error: 0x8007232B DNS name does not exist", suggests this server is now configured as a KMSclient, and it is trying to contact a KMShost to perform activation. It is not being returned any SRV records from your DNS, when it queries for _vlmcs._tcp
If you do not have a KMShost server implemented, you need to input a suitable ServerEnterprise product key.
When you purchase your ServerEnterprise license, you will be given a product key to use for this.
For this task, you can use slmgr.vbs /ipk
For your trial, you could use the method slmgr.vbs /rearm
this will only succeed 3 times, I think.

    Hi,
Regarding the issue here, please restart the computer and press F8 until you see the
advanced boot options, select start windows normally,
if it starts with no problem, please check if you have the option boot from safe mode checked:
    run->type msconfig->tab boot->boot options, check if the
safe boot is selected, if yes please uncheck it. Then restart the computer to check if this problem still exists.

  • Using Windows Server 2008 with After Effects as Render Slave?

    Hi guys,
We have a fair number of servers that run Windows Server 2008 64bit.  We wanted to further utilize these boxes and wanted to know if it's possible to use them as render slaves with After Effects?  Anybody doing this?  We couldn't find anything for system requirements on Windows Server 2008.
    Thanks for everyone's input.
    Jason

    Hi Todd,
Another question for ya.  Does it matter if we have some machines still running 32-bit render slaves for after effects and implement a master 64-bit CS5 after effects Master?  Can you mix it up OR do all the machines have to be upgraded to the same version, eeven though they are just render slaves?  We are just doing some thinking on reconfiguration and what to do so it's right the first time.
    Thanks for the input.
    Jason
