Windows XP Internet Connection

I have Windows XP and MAC OS on my MacBook Pro. For some reason the internet connection only works on the MAC OS portion. I've tried using the control panel options to detect my wireless connection and connect to the other computer in the house (which is connected to the modem and router), but still no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi
Not sure if this will help, but I managed to solve this problem just now on my Mac Pro (running Windows XP SP2)
I have my network connections set to a fixed IP address (under tcp/ip settings). I have to do this because the MP is part of a Windows domain. I wasn't getting any internet either until I checked and saw that I had the wrong ip address entered. When I changed it to the proper one (that the Domain knows about) the internet worked.
The default is to have the DNS give you an ip address, but you might want to try a fixed ip and see if that solves the problem.

  • Internet signal but no Windows XP internet connection

I have a MacPro partitioned using BootCamp and can access the internet using the Mac OS side but when I open to the Windows XP partition, I have an "excellent" signal denoted in the lower right hand corner but can not get a connection to the internet using Explorer. I can use a ethernet cable attached to my Mac and access the internet while in Windows
I went to the microsoft website to apply the hot fixes offered without resolve to the problem.
My question is this: What is wrong? Is the configuration used on the OS Partition for AirPort different for Windows? Could it be the channel being used. I am very overwhelmed by all the different lettering being used to denote this or that and though I have been trying to work on this for over a week, I can not find a forum that addresses this. My router is a Linksys and the main PC and my Mac are working fine but it is the Windows thing. Can anyone suggest, being as specific as possible as to how to fix this.
Any help would be very much appreciated!

I just spent 2 hours trying to get a windows Xp to connect to a airport extreme. When I first started, I needed the hex key to connect the windows machine; I got the key and it connected fine. When I start the airport admin utility, it told me it the version installed was not compatable with the base station, but every thing worked. I decided that I better update the admin utility, so I installed what came with the base station. When I started the new version of the the utility,it found a update for the base station. So, I let it update the firmware. I don't know if the windows would have connected because I did not test it. Once the firmware was updated, the windows machine connects but does not aquire a IP address. I am using WEP and the wep key works just fine with the MacBook.
It seems like this is the same problem others are describing, but also seems to be linked to either the firmware update or the admin utililty. Has everyone witht problems updated the firmware in the base station?

  • How to share Windows 7 Internet connection AND Extreme USB hard disk?

    Hi All,
I'm trying to share the mobile broadband Internet connection on a Windows 7 PC as well as the USB hard disk connected to the Airport Extreme (2nd Gen) with other WiFi devices. The problem is that I can get either the one to work or the other, but not both.
When I configure the Airport Extreme for DHCP+NAT, all machines on the Airport network can see each other, share files, etc. When I enable Internet Connection Sharing on the Windows 7 machine, the only way I've gotten that to work is to set the Airport Extreme to bridge mode, but then file sharing of the Airport Extreme's disk no longer works.
Device info: Internet-connected Dell Latitude E5420 Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, Airport Extreme 802.11n (2nd Gen), Windows XP Home Edition + Nokia N8 + etc. WiFi devices.
I've read all the manuals I could find and searched these forums but haven't been able to figure out a solution. I'm really getting desperate and will really appreciate any and all suggestions!
    Many thanks,
    Francois

I've found a solution that works with my existing equipment. It's now possible to share the Windows 7 machine's Internet connection at the same time as the AirPort's drive. An additional challenge was to avoid having to manually reconfigure every WiFi client, but it turned out that's also possible.
For the sake of posterity, here's the guide! :-)
    Background
My setup is based on an AirPort Extreme access point WiFi network. The AirPort shares a hard drive, and a number of Windows clients connect to the network. One of these, a Windows 7 machine, has a USB mobile broadband dongle which I also wanted to share with the network.
Previously I got this to work, but whatever configuration I came up with required manual reconfiguration of each network client, one way or the other. This was not ideal. Also, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) defaults to IP address .1, the same one to which the AirPort defaults. This needed manual reconfiguration of the ICS host each time ICS was turned on.
    Solution
THIS SOLUTION REQUIRES THE AIRPORT TO BE IN EITHER DHCP + NAT OR DHCP MODE. IF FOR SOME REASON YOU DEPEND ON THE AIRPORT BEING IN BRIDGE MODE, UNFORTUNATELY THIS SOLUTION WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU.
    1. Do the AirPort's non-Internet configuration
On the AirPort Utility main screen, click the AirPort button, work through all the tab sheets and configure the items as you require. Do the same for the Printers, Disks and Advanced buttons. Once that's complete, we can do the Internet configuration.
    2. Set the AirPort to DHCP & NAT
This is needed so you can choose the AirPort network address in the next step (but you can still set a different Connection Sharing mode later on, see step 7). For now, set Connection Sharing to Share a public IP address:
    3. Set the AirPort to the same network address as ICS
Set the AirPort to the network address used by ICS, namely 192.168.137.xyz. Note that the AirPort does not allow a beginning address below 2:
    4. Obtain the AirPort's MAC addresses
These will be used in the next step. Record both the Airport ID as well as the Ethernet ID:
    5. Fix the AirPort IP addresses to prevent clashing with ICS
The AirPort will default to the same IP address as ICS, namely 192.168.137.1. To prevent this, assign different addresses to the AirPort with DHCP reservations. Underneath DHCP Reservations, click the '+' and create reservations for each of the AirPort and Ethernet interfaces. You can use other values, but to be consistent with the rest of this guide use 192.168.137.253 for the AirPort interface and 192.168.137.254 for the Ethernet inteface:
    6. Distribute ICS configuration data with AirPort DHCP
Yes, you read right! This is where the magic happens. To avoid having to manually configure each WiFi client for the additional ICS network, that configuration data is included with the AirPort DHCP configuration. Assuming you've stuck to the numbers above, configure the TCP/IP screen exactly as shown. .254 is the AirPort router (and also its Ethernet interface) address, and .1 is the IP address that Windows configures for the ICS interface:
    7. Set AirPort Connection Sharing
If your AirPort is sharing a connection on its WAN port, choose Share a public IP address, otherwise choose Distribute a range of IP address. In the latter case the NAT tab disappears:
    8. Save your AirPort's configuration
Your AirPort configuration is now complete and you can push the Update button. Once your AirPort has rebooted, its network will be fully operational.
    9. Ensure your Internet sharing port is correctly configured
ICS involves two network ports on the sharing computer - the shared Internet-connected port, and the sharing port connected to your local network. When you enable ICS on the shared port, Windows will temporarily configure the sharing port's settings to fit in with the scheme above (it will get the fixed IP address 192.168.137.1). When ICS is disabled, Windows will restore the default configuration of the sharing port. The purpose of this step is to ensure that the default sharing port configuration is correct. When ICS is inactive the sharing port needs to obtain an IP address automatically from the AirPort via DHCP. Right-click your chosen WiFi sharing connection > Properties > Networking > Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties and configure as follows:
    10. Share your Internet connection
Right-click the connection you want to share > Properties > Sharing and configure as follows (you may find the other settings also useful but they're not covered here):
And now you're ready to enjoy your local network services as well as your shared Internet connection, all on your Airport Extreme network - without having to lift a finger to configure network clients!
    Windows Network Profiles
If you use Windows network profiles to distinguish between Home, Work and Public networks, here are some additional notes you may find useful.
As Windows recognises networks, it applies their assigned profiles which add or remove sets of restrictions wrt. network discovery, file & printer sharing and so on. The amount of ICS configuration data that can be included with AirPort DHCP information is limited and in some instances this interferes with how Windows recognises networks.
It seems that Windows recognises a network once a default router has been configured for it. Following are some known scenarios with fixes for each, based on that principle.
    1. WiFi network not recognised
When ICS is enabled, on the ICS host Windows configures only an IP address for the sharing port and no default router. When ICS is disabled, on the ICS host this port receives its configuration from the AirPort via DHCP, as do all other WiFi clients. This DHCP configuration includes router information for the ICS network, but again no router information for the AirPort network itself.
Therefore the AirPort network is not recognised on any Windows machines on the WiFi network, under any circumstances.
To make Windows recognise the AirPort network, execute the following from the command line with Administrator privileges:
         route -4 add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.137.254 metric 3000
This metric is high enough to ensure that "real" default routes get preference over this one.
If you want to remove the above routing table entry, execute the following from the command line with Administrator privileges:
         route -4 delete 0.0.0.0 192.168.137.254
For convenience I created shortcuts for these two commands.
    2. WiFi network recognised, unrecognised network remains
Once you've added the route above to make Windows recognise your AirPort network, when ICS is disabled Windows will probably identify TWO networks on your WiFi adapter:
         Unidentified network, your_AirPort_network
Windows now recognises your AirPort network, but the DHCP router entry for the inactive ICS network makes it think there must be yet another network. However, the 192.168.137.1 ICS port is not present when ICS is inactive, so Windows reports the inactive router entry as an unidentified network.
If you want to remove this unidentified network/router entry, execute the following from the command line with Administrator privileges:
         route -4 delete 0.0.0.0 192.168.137.1
On your Windows ICS host, removing this entry can cause no harm.
However, on network clients where you removed this entry and subsequently want to share your Internet connection from again, you'll need to add it back.
To restore the ICS router entry, execute the following from the command line with Administrator privileges:
         route -4 add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.137.1 metric 1

  • Is it possible to share Windows XP internet connection to iPhone 4 via USB tethering?

My computer (Windows XP) connects to the internet, and I want to share that connection to my iPhone 4 (iOS 5.0.1). Is it possible to do that via USB tethering? I know that it's possible for iPhone 4 to share its internet connection to others via Personal Hotspot, so can the opposite be done?

You wouldn't be able to do that via USB, however if your computer had the ability to transmit wireless from the computer, you would be able to connect the iPhone to it via wifi. Computers have the ability to do that with the correct equipment.

  • N8 and windows 7 internet connectivity

i have had headaches with this issue. i
have ovi suite installed on my computer(s) from the phone(s), have taken of pc suite because it was making ovi suite crash, after downloading windows 7 sp1 on one computer, I can now connect to internet with either phone, but only in admin account,
on the other computer, there is only one account, i have followed previous steps, still comes up when first installed and connected that i need to get a hotfix from microsoft, but win 7 is completely up to date and does not need sp1???
is there something simple i'm missing here to make this work? it took me two weeks to get one computer to sort of work, now i have to do another one??
    suggestions please, very much appreciated

    Hello @readytochuck,
I'm sorry to hear you have had some problems, but if I understood you
correcly, you want to access to internet from your computer via your N8?
For me the most easiest way is (using it right now, and belive me, in past
three years I have used all possible ways to connect to internet via phone)
the JoikuSpot Premium, downloadable from the Ovi Store (costs some 10€).
Download the app, make sure you don't have any unnecessary access points
on your phone, define your operator's default internet access point for
JoikuSpot to share over and start the JoikuSpot. Now your computer can
find it when scanning for open wlan networks.
    Easy and simple!

  • Windows XP Internet Connection Issue Please Help.

    Hi,
I recently had my iMac serviced for repairs, and now I can no longer connect to the internet.
Under my device manager there is one PCI device listed as unknown.
I'm wondering if when I had a new logic board installed that they replaced my network adapter or something.
I don't know where to go to download drivers or what drivers I need.
Anyone experienced enough with this to help me?

From your signature I see that you are using Tiger. Therefore I am assuming that you are using Boot Camp while it was on its beta stage. If you still have the drivers disk that you made during installation then insert that in the disk drive while booted in XP. This should re-install all the drivers and detect that unknown device in device manager. Its worth a try.

  • Pbms w T400 after bios update: long time to boot, TPM&internet connect pbms

    Hello,
I have a T400 thinkpad, type 7417 that I bought in the US in Nov 2008 (it was downgraded from vista to xp). In November 2011 the computer was running slow so I decided to clean it up a bit and then do the maintenance recommended by the thinkvantage program. I proceeded to do all the smaller updates and the last one that was recommended was updating the BIOS (from what I understood). I left the computer doing these updates overnight, making sure it was plugged into a power source as specified by the update.
The next morning I found that my computer took 5-10minutes to start up and when it did, the screen resolution was altered as if it was in safe mode or something…I removed the HD and saved my data, then tried to use the Rescue and Recovery program to revert to factory settings. Although it seems that the factory settings were indeed restored I still have many problems with the computer. 1. it takes 5-10min to start (blank screen pre-windows logo) 2. it gives me 2 error messages once it has booted: 2a. "Tvttcsd application has encountered a pbm and needs to close." 2b. "There was a pbm connecting to the tpm (security devie) on this computer. It is possible that anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connection. A missing or disabled driver could also cause this problem. Please refer to the online documentation for more information." 3. it cannot connect to the internet (either wifi or ethernet) 4. Ad-aware tells me it detects a malicious program running but cannot seem to clear it. I have seen several threads about these problems but cannot figure out if they are all connected or not. Before touching anything I was hoping for some help on how to proceed - I am no expert but I can follow instructions I am currently running avast on the computer to hopefully get rid of whatever viruses there may be and see if that can solve the problem. All help is really really welcome please!!!! lore

When I try to look into the Windows firewall I get the following error message:
"Cannot start Windows firewall/internet connection sharing service."
Not sure if both of these are related or not. Any ideas? Would re-installing windows help?
Thanks so much for your help! lore
Did you "optimize" your computer with "Tuneup utilities"? This might cause problems like that.
Also check, whether the services "Windows Firewall" is set to start "Automatic" and running.
Third party desktop-firewall like Zonealarm, Kaspersky or Symantec Internet Security also can cause that problem. In that case remove it including all policies, test the connection and re-install it. Activate training-mode and disallow automatic blocking unknown outgoing connections.

  • Error Msg: "internet connect" "could not find a pppoe server"

    Hi,
I'm a mac newbie and am having problems with my new MacBook that I just bought and setup yesterday. When the setup asst is asking questions when I first started the computer, I mistakenly chose connect via pppoe. Then, when the setup asst ended, I realized my mistake (b/c I am using a dsl connection that I plug in through my ethernet port), went into system preferences--network-- and chose ethernet, using DHCP. Now I am able to connect to the internet and get my mail, but I keep getting a pop-up window called "Internet Connect" that says "Could not find a PPPOE server". Can someone tell me what I need to change? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
In Network Preferences, where you setup the DHCP, click configure again and select Create PPPoE service, and remove/undo whatever you entered in those dialog boxes. Then re-select DHCP.
Leave the default name, PPPoE but just remove everything else.
If there are any check boxes to connect via PPPoE, be sure they are unchecked.
If that does not help, then in your user library/preferences directory, drag the following file to the desktop and reboot
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist
That should take care of it.

    hello,
the popup window for "internet connect" haunts this computer.
can you help me get rid of it?
this is a imac g5 power pc. currently running 10.4.7
    about to be running 10.4.8
there is no internal modem. only an ethernet port.
there are only the following options in system preferences > network > show >
    NETWORK STATUS
    BLUETOOTH
    BUILT IN FIREWIRE
    BUILT IN ETHERNET
    AIRPORT
    NETWORK PORT CONFIGURATIONS
what is making the internet connect window pop up?
in bluetooth > bluetooth modem : an apple internal 56k is listed, with no option to turn it off.
    bluetooth is configured over ppp
(the only bluetooth in use is keyboard and mouse)
in built in ethernet >tcp/ip we are configured over dhcp. no proxies, no pppoe and apple talk IS active
built in firewire > tcp/ip is configured over dhcp
airport> tcp/ip is configured over ppp and airport> pppoe : connect using ppp is checked
thanks for any help in this ghostbusting.

    I'd start by trashing...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

  • Internet Connecting problem.

When I connect to the internet I get the usual request to enter password (no problem so far !). The connection goes through as indicated on the tool bar stating 'Authenticating....' and the clock starts ticking (showing the passing time)....THEN the annoying pop-up of a window headed "Internet Connect" with the message ' Could not find PPPoE Server'... to get rid of it I just click on the OK button. What is that all about ? and if nothing is wrong how can I stop it poping up each time ? Advice eagerly awaited and will be gratefully received, thanks....loons
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi again loons,
I'm guessing that you connect using a USB DSL modem?
I'm a little out of my depth here as we use a router to connect which that stays connected 24/7 so we never see the "Connecting...Connecting" in the menu bar. We used to use a USB modem, but a long time ago. Hence being 'out of my depth'.
However, try this. System Preferences>Network. Location-Automatic. Show-Built in ethernet. Do you see a PPPoE tab now? If you do, uncheck the box as described in my previous post. Then do the same with Show- Airport. Then go to 'Show' again and select Network port configurations. You should then see a box with, possibly, several available connections. Drag your USB connection to the top of the list and uncheck all the other boxes. Click Apply now.
If I'm right in that you have a USB modem then you might like to consider for the future getting a router/ADSL modem. They are far less problematic, don't need to have drivers installed, connect via the Ethernet port, & most importantly, have a built in hardware firewall. If you got a wi-fi router/ADSL modem it would get rid of one of the wires at the back of your desk and would give you the option of moving the computer to another room, if you wished. I got my Belkin 7632 from Currys, The Willows for about £50, they're probably cheaper online now.
All the best, and post back with how you get on.

  • Setting up a new TC.  Everything went fine.  I was able to connect a macbook air, 2 ipads, an Iphone 6, and even a windows 7 PC.  All devices showed a complete and functioning internet connection, but none of the devices could access the internet.

I am trying to set up internet connection to my home using a 3gig Airport time capsule as a router.  I unplugged the cable from the existing router, and plugged it into the ethernet port of the TC.  The TC fired up found tttttttthe internet connection, and glowed green.  I set up the password, and all, and was then able to connect a Windows 7 PC, 2 ipads, and iphone 6, and a macbbook air, all running the most current os.  All devices connect with the internet via the Airport device.  they all say that there is a fully functioning internet connection, but none of them can actually connect to the internet.  When I run a speed test via OKLA I am told that the test failed to innatiate. When I try to do a search I get an error message that the page cannot open because safari cannot make a secure connection to the server.
    Any suggestions?

Inside the house I have what looks like a phone cable that is plugged into a power supply, and into a router.
What is this router?? Is it the TC or a router supplied by the ISP?
It will depend on how the system works.. but the instructions from skybeam are fairly simple.. you just setup a router with dhcp set on the WAN port for connection.
On the airport utility open your TC by clicking it then clicking edit.
Make sure the WAN is set correctly and the ISP ethernet cable is plugged into it.
And make sure Network is set to DHCP and NAT.
Please give me the screenshots of the same things from your setup.
