Windows XP trade in Fiasco

On Sunday 4/6/14, I went to my local best buy to trade in a working laptop, Toshiba Satellite A20 series with the original factory install of windows XP to take advantage of the recent promo of getting $25 BB gift card and $75 towards purchase of new laptop. When I tried to get the promotion, I was denied, saying the laptop was not in the  trade-in system and so they would not be able to give me any of the promotion credits and would just recycle my laptop. When I got back home, I checked online about this situation and saw that a lot of consumers were able to send in their laptops that were not on the trade-in system because the employees just had to go through the "recycle for trade-in" system which would then prompt the windows XP promo there. I called Best Buy customer service that night and verified that information with one of the representatives who said that as long as the laptop was working with windows XP, going through the "recycle  for trade in" system would allow for laptops not on the "trade-in" list to be taken and given the XP promo credits.
I called to my local Best Buy the next to relay this information and confirm this. I ended up with a Geek squad employee who went through the system for me and saw that it worked after getting an associate manager log in(?) and told me I could bring in my receipt and he would let the appropriate people know so that they would be able to process me for the gift card and credit towards a new computer when I came in. I went to the Best Buy that afternoon, and I was again denied! I was told that it would not work and that they could not do anything for me now that my laptop was already given to them the day prior.
This has been really frustrating on multiple levels. It seems that the awareness and knowledge of this win XP promo was not consistent among all the employees in Best Buy and that this confusion or lack of clarity has made it very difficult to take advantage of this promotion despite it being displayed prominently on the weekly advertisements and in store ads. Looking at other consumers' experiences online, many people had faced the same situation as me with the laptop not being in the "trade-in" system, but ultimately being able to have their laptops be accepted and go through to obtain the gift card and future credit promotion. And finally, the lack of communication between employees within the same Best Buy was astounding as the person who I spoke with at the store who I was told to speak to when I was with them over the phone, denied ever being told about the conversation had and how to process the promo.
The fact is the local Best Buy team I dealt with stated that the reason my laptop was not eligible (otherwise, they had booted it up and showed that it had a working windows XP with a working screen, checked the windows xp sticker that was on my laptop, and saw that the laptop was able to work on battery power as well as charge) was because it COULD NOT be found in the trade in application. The instruction job aid's that were given to the local Best Buy's to help the customer reps process this deal however explicitly say in Step 1 of the Processing Instructions - "Search for the computer make and model. If the model is NOT in the Trade-in application click on Recycling and select Laptop." SO in this case, my laptop would have been eligible under the Recycling tab of the application as they DID process it as a recycle, but did not proceed to do any of the further steps to give me the gift card and promotion credit.
After even explaining that that was the way to go about the process so that I would be eligible for the credit, the store manager at the time, Louis, said that was not how it was done and that going through the recycling tab would not give me the gift card and promo credit. However, there is direct evidence that this is not the case. Searching forums on the web about this Best Buy XP laptop trade in promotion also shows that multiple customers have been able to obtain the promotion through the recycle tab option when their laptop is not listed in the trade-in tab, as backed by the Best Buy Job Aid instructions.
It's really infuriating when the customer knows more about a particular store promotion and how it is processed then staff of the store itself. I shouldn't have to justify why my laptop was eligible for the promotion when the staff, if they just followed their own store instructions, would have found it eligible themselves. The laptop was already checked to be in complete working condition, they just did not know how to process the transaction so that I could get the promotion.  As mentioned, I've already gone to the store (Best Buy store # 483) twice to explain this (and once after I had spoken to someone over the phone at the store prior to going who understood this and told me that they would be able to process the promo for me and to just speak to Louis, the manager again) to be told at the store by the manager that this was not the case, and that the promotion is not processed via the recycling tab (even though it can be!!! - based on the Job Aid instructions and multiple accounts by other users that this was in fact how they got their promotion).

Hello Disappointed233,
Our XP Trade-In promotion that we offered was a great way to have your older computers recycled in environmentally safe way while making sure you were compensated by offering a minimum $100.00 in reward offers. However, it appears there was a miscommunication with the inner workings of the promotion within our store, leaving you unable to receive this offer. I’m sure you were excited to take advantage of this only for your hopes to be dashed when you were denied the offer. I’m sorry for the frustration this caused.
When an XP laptop was brought to a Geek Squad counter, our agents should have determined its eligibility by reviewing the following terms:
-          Power on and run on its own battery power without connection to its AC Adapter
-          Not have a defaced, missing or altered serial number
-          Not have a cracked screen or water damage
Please know that these conditions are up to the discretion of store employees; however, if your computer is deemed eligible for this promotion, the agent should look up your computer with our Trade-In Estimator to see how much your computer is worth. If it has a value less than $25, this offer would supersede its trade-in value and give you a $25 gift card. If its value is deemed higher, you would receive a gift card higher than the guaranteed $25. Additionally, you should also receive a $75 trade-in coupon that may be used towards the purchase of a new computer. If your laptop isn’t recognized by our trade-in system, our employees should have had the option to choose the promotion outside of it so that you could receive both the $25 gift card and the $75 coupon.
It seems something went wrong with your latest visit that left you unable to claim this promotional offer. Additionally, your laptop is already recycled and the promotion has expired so it does complicate things. I have sent you a private message so that we may discuss this further. You may view it by logging into the forum and clicking on the envelope in the upper right-hand corner.
Thank you for posting!

    Windows XP Trade-In Offer
On page 1 of the April 6-12 ad insert, we advertised Upgrade from Windows XP Today: Get a Minimum of $100 toward the purchase of a new computer when you trade in a working Windows XP laptop.
Customers may only apply one $75 discount coupon from the trade-in of their working Windows XP Laptop per new computer purchase.
We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused.
    NOTE:
While only one coupon may be applied to a single purchase, multiple Best Buy gift cards can be applied to a single purchase.
Limit of 3 Trade-in transactions per person.
This offer provided a minimum of $100 toward the purchase of a new computer. This guaranteed a $75 coupon, plus a minimum of $25 gift card from the Trade-in. If the Trade-in value was more than $25, customers were to receive that value plus the $75 coupon. For example, if the Trade-in value was $18, customer would receive a $25 gift card + a $75 coupon. If the Trade-in value was $38, customer would receive a $38 gift card + $75 coupon.

    Hi Jensen,
XP has always been my favorite Windows operating system, and I’m quite sad to see it go. However, I’m happy that we’re offering the Windows XP Trade In promotion as it’ll help ease our customer’s into new technology, and with a discount!
The Windows XP upgrade promotion page, seen here, specifies the requirements for eligibility. From what I can see, the requirements are that a laptop would not qualify for the promotion if it has a cracked screen, does not run off battery power, or has a missing or defaced serial number. While the disclaimer specifies that not all products are eligible for trade-in, it sounds like your computers may be in an acceptable condition. We expect our store associates to be knowledgeable around these promotions, and I sincerely apologize if you were turned away when you may have been eligible.
With that said, I’m going to contact the leadership team at the Dover, DE Best Buy location, specifically the store on DuPont Highway. With their assistance, I should be able to receive clarification as to why you would have been declined the ability to take advantage of the promotion.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us on the forums, and I’ll be following up with you accordingly!

  • Windows xp trade in issues

I brought in a laptop with a working battery, no screen crack, and a valid serial number. According to multiple replies on these forums, this laptop should qualify for the trade in program. However, I was denied the trade in because the screen was partially dim. I explained that this laptop should still qualify according to the best buy customer service representative replies on this forum, to which I was still denied. This inconsistency is frustrating, as I would like to support best buy and this program. Any help to correct this issue would be appreciated.
My local best buy store is in fargo, ND. Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi Tradeinhelp,
I greatly appreciate you wanting to support the Windows XP upgrade program, as it revolves around recycling. Recycling is an extremely important part of a sustainable future, so I commend you for being on board! This program is meant to allow our customers to trade-in their older XP laptops for a discount towards newer technology, as well as shed a positive light on getting rid of your old technology. I apologize that your recent experience in the Fargo store resulted in frustration.
Generally in this scenario, we would reach out to store leadership and gain further understanding around why your trade-in would have been denied, which can take some time depending on how busy the store is. However, today is the last day of the promotion. With that said, I would highly suggest going back to the Fargo location and asking to speak with a manager. From what it sounds, your computer may be eligible for the promotion as a dim screen isn’t listed as a reason for ineligibility.
Thank you for sharing your concerns with us on the forums, and I hope the store leadership team at the Fargo location is able to take another look at this before the promotion ends!

  • Re: More XP Trade-in issues

Had very similar issue, traded in 3 working XP laptops, and was only allowed to use 1 coupon.  and after being told I could only use 1 they would not give me back the other 2 laptops as they were already processed.  I am basically out $150 on this deal.  not a good promotion for me!

    Good afternoon derekfritz,
Having traded in three laptops running Windows XP, I can imagine you were very excited to get your hands on three $75 coupons from our promotion! It’s regretful to hear that you may not have been aware of the restrictions with the coupon, including that only one coupon could be used per laptop purchased.
Unfortunately, we would be unable to accept all three coupons you have in order for you to purchase one laptop. I can understand why this could possibly be quite frustrating for you, and I am deeply grateful that you have shared your feedback in regards to our Windows XP trade-in promotion. If you should need any further assistance, please feel welcome to reach out to me!

  • XP Laptop Trade-In Coupons

    Hello,
I had a question regarding the XP Laptop trade-in $75 coupons.  I traded in a few laptops and received $75 coupons for each one traded in.  The trade in process each time was fairly quick and the CSR knew exactly how to process the trades.  They were done separately, so the system would generate one coupon per laptop.
When attempting to use the coupons in-store, I was informed that only one coupon can be used for each laptop purchase, and the coupons are not able to be combined.
In reviewing the coupons, the cashier instructions specify "Coupon must be surrendered at time of discount, one coupon must be presented for each upgrade offer.  Please verify the name on the coupon matches the customer presenting the coupon." All the coupons were received from upgrade offers, and my name is on each coupon.
Most coupons are full of fine print, and would specifically mention terms and conditions of the coupon.  Based on the "fine print" on the trade-in coupons, one would think they're combineable.  They do not specify anything to the effect of "one coupon per laptop purchase" or "not combineable with any other coupon offers."  I was planning on purchasing 2 laptops, but may end up purchasing none if the coupons are not combineable.
I'm hoping this is just a system/register issue, as I'm meeting all the terms of the coupons.  If there indeed is a restriction on "limit one per transaction/laptop purchase/etc, it should be specified, and it would have prevented me from trading in more than one laptop.

    Hello runner017,
With news of Microsoft discontinuing new updates for their XP computers, our Windows XP Trade-In promotion last week was quite popular. I’m glad you were able to take advantage of the offer, but I’m disheartened to hear you were blindsided after you discovered your trade-in coupons weren’t stackable at the time of purchase. I’m sure this put a damper on your excitement, especially when all you wanted to do was upgrade to new and shiny technology.
Typically, coupon offers are limited to one per purchase.  This is why you experienced difficulties at the register when attempting to use more than one coupon as our system doesn’t allow it. It was never our intention to disappoint you, and I’m truly sorry for frustration this caused. Please know though that I’m grateful for the advice you’ve provided us regarding the terms and conditions of the coupon as we do take our customer’s feedback into consideration for future endeavors.
If you should need any further assistance, please feel welcome to reach out to me.
    Thanks for posting!

  • Enough - Get specif

I don't understand this mob mentality crap that's arisen in the last couple days, apparently everyone's acting like there are no drivers for Vista. Well surprise:

Resolves the Digital I/O detection issue when restarting your computer.<
    Known Issues:
Before installing this driver, close the Creative MediaSource Go! application on your desktop and restart your computer. (After you have installed this driver, you may manually launch the MediaSource Go! application from the Start menu)<
When adjusting the master volume in any of the Mode Console, there is no sound output in the rear speakers. (Use the Microsoft Volume Control panel to adjust the master volume)<
What is all that then? Exactly how is this NO SUPPORT at all? What are the specific non-working features? Keep in mind that working around Vista's ass backwards idea of audio support is likely half the problem to begin with.
    Message Edited by Catherina-CL on <span class='local-date'> 04-5-2008<span class='local-time'> 03:08 PM

    I can be pretty specific:
I have just installed Vista updated to SP...totally new build.
I go to Creative to download drivers for my Audigy MP3+ and there are no drivers for this card for Vista...all the other Audigy's have a driver that I assume work...but not one for this card.
I replace the card with an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro and proceeded to download the drivers from the Creative site...low and behold "Device not found" or something along those lines. That seems to be some driver install package that is being put out for download...god forbid someone want to just run it and have it work. I ended up having to install the drivers from the /Drivers/ folder and run setup from there. My card was installed, but I have nothing but the driver to be proud of from this package. Tried to run the install again, as the driver worked to find the card, however I got the no device found error again.
In all, from my experience beginning with XP...Creative drivers have lacked seriously. This forum as well as many others across the internet back that claim up...if there weren't problems...there wouldn't be as many "help me" posts across these boards.

  • SKY GO on yoga 2

    Hello
I have successfully installed the skygo desk top but I cannot go to the sky go website - it just displays the text and none on the links work. This is using IE.
I therefore tried to open the website with firefox but it says I need to activate a plug in. When I click on active plug in nothing happens?
    Any ideas?

SkyGo needs the Silverlight plugin to stream video on Windows. That is probably what your Firefox plugin message is all about. According to their website Firefox is supported on Windows 8.1 but then so is Internet Explorer:-
    http://help.sky.com/articles/sky-go-supported-devices#!whole-nav-cfd8038e4b-computer
Their implementation on Windows has been a fiasco from the start. You could read through the support forum on the Sky website for some clues:-
    http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?allow_punctuation=true&filter=labels%2Cloc...
It really should work in Internet Explorer (IE) though. Possibly you could try running IE from the desktop (full version of IE) rather than from the Start menu (cut down metro app version of IE).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry that i cannot check your info as i run 64bit Windows. Trad. DAQ won't run on 64bit......
Do you see the same behavior if you drop the channel constant directly from the palette?
I don't get the reason for your MAX screenshot. Do you want to select your virtual channel? If so, make sure you did not drop a "physical channel"-constant!
If you have the correct channel constant: Have you saved your settings in MAX before dropping the constant?

    Hello,
Can anyone please shed some light on how I can run MS Office and Meta Trader 4 platform on mac air.  I have been using Play on Mac and Wine for the past couple of weeks, but now suddenly it has stopped working, only crashing and giving me nightmares.  Is it juts best to install the latest Windows or Parallel?
    Regards Joe

Meta Trader 4 is Windows only - Office is available for the Mac and Windows and are mostly compatible but given that you'll be doing online trading you may prefer the Windows version of Excel since there are financial spreadsheets with macros that only run on the Mac with some significant editing.
You can install Windows 7 or 8 in BootCamp or any version of Windows usting virtualization. VMWare and Parallels are commercial programs and VirtualBox is open source. VB may be all you need. Whatever solution you choose, you'll need a commercial version of Windows (or get an OEM disc from NewEgg).

    Hi,

    - the 'Installing Quartz' window is saying installing Quartz, but all it does from there is the clock the spins around, just keeps spinning and nothing happens - I have waited and waited for it, but it just kind of freezes there.  I have reloaded the software over and over, and even switched off the firewall in case it was blocking Playonmac.  It is really important I load Meta Trader 4 on my Mac.

According to wiki "the documentation from Apple states that Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista is requisite for a Boot Camp installation, and it also mentions that trying to install an unsupported operating system could prevent the computer from booting even into Mac OS X". Sure that was from wiki, but it does seem to support and somewhat validate the problem I had with installing an earlier edition of XP.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BootCamp_%28software%29#Other_operatingsystems
Thanks for the info on the Filesystem info. My problem is that installing OS X on a mac is just a little bit more technical than installing Windows on a PC as there are a few more things to consider. Plus I'm not familiar with any of the utility programs as well. It's a **** miracle I managed to somehow create a volume to install OS X on when I thought I was erasing the partition I created for WinXP.
But I'm still not sure about the missing 40GB from my 500GB HDD. Upon coming to the desktop straight after OS X was fully re-installed I noticed that the HDD only had 460GB and that 440GB of it available space. So the full installation of OS X was 20GB, but where has the other 40GB gone? I swear I saw that I had much more available space on my harddrive (BEFORE I tried to partition my HDD under Boot Camp Assistant and stuffing up the computer). Is the missing 40GB from the ORIGINAL FACTORY INSTALL of OS X INCLUDING all my iTunes music and other files I uploaded to the computer earlier? It would make sense but there's no way, as far as I know, of checking this. Any ideas?
    Cheers.

Is it possible to trade over or change the licence into iMac version for a small fee. If not , can I partition the hard drive of iMac and install windows and also photoshop elements? which is the best alternative ? why?

A Photoshop Elements license is good for both Mac and Windows so it should be just a matter of downloading the Mac version and using your current serial number to activate it.

I am looking for anybody that might be interested in this trade. I am unable to do the cross platform as I missed the CS5 per policy by 2 days after a long discussion with Adobe in only being eleligble for CS5.5 upgrade price of $400. I currently have a CS5 teacher and student edition design premium for windows. If someone has like software for mac and is interested in trading let me know. Thanks.

You cannot transfer a student/teacher edition. I'm afraid your only route to the Mac version is via upgrade directly through Adobe.

  • Windows XP Laptop Trade-In Promo

I brought a fully working windows XP laptop (Compaq Presario 2100) to my local BestBuy (store #1073) to take advantage of this program last night. Laptop was 100% fully working - simply old as expected. After spending 20-30 minutes with them taking it apart and checking Battery / RAM / Hard Drive / Bootup / Screen / etc... the final verdict was that my laptop was perfectly fine but not on their list of models they can accept so I was denied. I was livid - if there is some list of accepted laptops why isn't this put in the promotion anywhere? I cannot in any way understand why my laptop would not be accepted (pretty sure I even bought it at Best Buy 10 years ago) and would love some explanation - along with knowing what this magical list is and why you wouldn't check a computer against this list first instead of going through a 30 minute process first.  All the fine print seems normal - must be operational, non damaged, boots up, valid copy of windows XP, etc... After trying to get an explanation from the sales manager it came down to 'well what were you planning on purchasing and maybe we can figure something out'. This just seems downright fraudulent / false-advertising to me, a maybe we'll honor our recycling promotion if you decide to buy the right product. The promotion as emailed/posted/distributed seemed like a win/win: I have an old laptop that I would love to replace with a new laptop or tablet, it meets all the standards you listed, I understand the promo is for a limited time coupon to be used on a new laptop/tablet at your store, what the heck?!? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

    Greetings psharkauburn,
If your Compaq Presario 2100 is in great working condition, I can understand why you would be disappointed in receiving the news that it wasn't an eligible device for this promotion. It would make sense that the first thing to check would be that the unit was an eligible product before testing to make sure it met the working conditions of the promotion. I am sorry if this was not the experience you were hoping for from our promotion.
Per the offer details, not all products are eligible for this trade-in promotion. Models must be recognized by our Trade-in Center to receive the $75 coupon. While the offer supersedes any lower trade-in values, it would still have to be a listed model that our system accepts. With the model you provided, sadly I was unable to locate it on our list of products eligible for trade-in.
That being said, if your laptop meets all of the other requirements but is not within our Trade-In system, you may still be able to receive the $25 gift card for recycling your laptop. I would suggest returning to the store to review this promotion with an associate and see if you may receive the $25 Best Buy gift card for recycling your unit.
If you should have any questions, please let me know!
