Wireless connection questions

Hi everyone, I'm considering going wireless soon, but I don't know a whole lot about it.
I have a few questions that maybe you could clear up for me.
First of all, it seems to me that the Airport Extreme Base Station isn't as fast as a lot of wireless routers I'm seeing sold these days. I've noticed some up to 108mbps, yet airport is only 54mbps.
So what I'm wondering is,
1) does the airport extreme card only work to connect to the airport base stations and not other wireless routers?
2) If the airport extreme cards do work with other wireless routers, is it a good idea to go with a faster wireless router than an airport extreme base?
3) What is the best wireless networking setup I should consider buying?
Thanks in advance,
-Merc

As mentioned the AEBS is 802.11G, just like many routers out there right now, so it is every bit as good as they are. The Airport card will connect to any 802.11G - or B - router out there, regardless of who makes it.
Keep in mind that those higher speeds that you see with a SuperG router are only going to be realized in your local network - that means between your computers - and not on the internet. Your typical broadband connection here in the States is about 4-6mbps, and even the slowest 802.11G connection is much faster than that at 54mbps.
Getting a faster router will only allow you to transfer files between computers faster. It will have no effect on your internet download speeds.

  • New Apple TV and wireless Connection Question?

My son lives in Russia and works for the State Dept. He want an Apple TV. The problem is that he is not tech savvy. Does the Apple TV need to connect wired or wireless to the router or just to the laptop to stream. He has a wireless connection for the laptop but if he has to go through set up and connect it to a router, I will never be able to walk him through it from 10,000 miles away. I have the old Apple tv and have it connected to the router with a wired connection. But I guess my IMAC synchs with the old Apple TV to send programs whether it is hardwired to a router or not. I hope this makes sense.

New AppleTv will connect via ethernet or wi-fi as before.
You could more than likely just connect it directly to the laptop with ethernet to stream locally stored content, but you'd need to set up some kind of internet sharing for it to access any internet or itunes store features.
AppleTV could also be set to work with an ad hoc wireless network from laptop but again internet connection would have to be shared over this, and it might be a bit fiddly too if router setup is going to be fiddly.
Simplest would be to connect both to router with ethernet. Have you considered mains powerline ethernet adapters if running cables is impractical?

  • Z10 Wireless Connection Question

One minor quirk that I have noticed with my z10 over the last few months -- when I have both Wifi and cell radio connections on at home wireless connections sometimes seem to struggle (especially apps like Facebook, Twitter, PGA Tour).  If I turn off WiFi then response is very good -- I'm on Rogers LTE: is it possible WiFi and LTE somehow conflict sporadically?  Our iPhone doesn't seem to have this problem but it's a non LTE iPhone 4s.
Just installed the latest OS patch but no change to this one
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I'd recommend:
Delete the saved WiFi profile on your Z10 (Settinggs > Network Connections > WiFi > find your connection and open it and choose the trashcan below to delete it.
Restart the Z10 (hold the top edge power button down a few seconds > restart at bottom right)
Then setup your same WiFi connection again.

  • Hp 4580 wireless connection question

Can I connect this printer by usb To one pc, and ALSO connect it wirelessly to other computers on the wireless network in The house ?

There should be any issues with that kind of setup, I've had to do that in the past myself with a non-wireless PC.    If you have any other questions, please let me know which exact model of 4580 you have, seems there are at least three different varieties.

  • Simple wireless connection question-one laptop hookup

Can one get a "wireless modem" from a cable company and buy a laptop (mac)and connect wirelessly to this modem, without having to plug the modem directly into the laptop? I've heard of "networking" where the cable modem plugs directly into a desktop, then a laptop can find connection wirelessly, but what if there's ONE computer and you don't want it wired to modem, but want to move around the house. Sorry for dumb question, but I can't seem to think thru this! Thanks ahead for help!

What you mean is a wireless router. Very different from a wireless modem of which there are several (e.g. ethernet, USB and CardBus). Yes, you set up a wireless network via that modem/router. However, you situation is totally dependent on what your ISP provides/recommends. Check with your ISP. If they provide you with just a modem, you would pick up something like the AirPort Express to create a wireless network for your notebook to access wirelessly.

  • Wireless connection question

    Hi,
I have a spare wireless-g usb network adapter which I would like to use to connect to a device in another part of the house.
Unfortunately this only has ethernet connections (at the moment I am having to run cables throughout the house whenever I wish to connect), does anyone know if this is possible and if so presumably I need some form of adapter, can anyone advise what and where I would get one, I have seen the usb to ethernet adapters but never the opposite
    thank

well. i guess u need a different wireless device for the kind of set up u have..
u need a linksys wireless ethernet bridge , model number WET54G ... connect the ethernet cable from the device to the WET54G and it will wirelessly communicate with the wireless AP / router ..

  • Ipad wireless connection question

I cant connect ipad to a particular wireless network. I have the password but the ipad won't offer the password box. It just says unable to join. This is after I entered the incorrect password once.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Wireless Connection questions on an unmanaged swtich

Hi all - here is the case: at some point in our network, we have lost connection. I have identified the switch this is occurring at.
If I plug the feed into my laptop and constant ping Google (8.8.8.8), I am able to get out to the internet no problem. If I plug that feed into a switch and plug my laptop into that switch, no more connectivity.
    Steps already taken:
    Tried other ports on switch
    Power-cycled switch
    Tried another switch
All to no avail, I am baffled. Thoughts anyone?
The switch is Linksys EF4124 and is unmanaged
Light indicator: feed to switch - no light on switch
Light indicator: switch to laptop - green light on switch, no light on laptop (no LED to be lit on laptop)
Yes, multiple computers are connected to this switch and yes none of them are working (sort of answered after noticing the light indicator is off on the feed port)
    No looped ports
    No serial console available
Remember, I have tested with another switch. So physical switch/switch settings are less likely
What really gets me is no light indicator on the port with the feed. I have tried moving the feed to other ports also, no dice.

As mentioned the AEBS is 802.11G, just like many routers out there right now, so it is every bit as good as they are. The Airport card will connect to any 802.11G - or B - router out there, regardless of who makes it.

  • Wireless Connection Set Up Question?

I almost feel bad asking such a simple question on this forum but I have been a dial up person my entire life until I purchased the MacBook last weekend. So far so good with everything associated with the computer. Love It!!
Question: I am going to get the computer set-up for wireless connection but don't quite understand the router/modem/computer connection. Through the cable company that I will be getting the wireless feed from I can receive a Cox Cable Modem (buy or rent) and the associated installation programs.
Do I need the Modem that they provide along with a router that I will purchase (I have read that the NetGear WGR614 is very good) or is there no need for a modem?
Does the setup take the cable from the wall to the modem ( by coaxial cable) to the router (by coaxial cable) and then it's all set up for the computer?
Does the air port program that is installed already on the computer make the installation CD's meaningless?
Again, sorry for the dumbness of these questions but I just want to make sure to get everything right the first time.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

That is a good idea. Does the AirPort Base station or a NetGear router accomplish the same thing?
So, I need to get the modem that will take the cable from the wall and then the signal will be sent to the AirPort Base Station and then to the Mac?
I am confused from the point of the modem that is either available through the cable provider or I can purchase. This is something that is required, correct. The wireless signal does not go from the wall outlet directly to the base station?

I have an existing new belkin modem router which works fine with quiet a few wired and wireless products in my house. My question is if i buy a time capsule can i put it in another room and wirelessly connect it to the belkin modem router, I would then just like my macbook pro and (imac future purchase) to wirelessly back up to it???????????

Your will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the TIme Capsule to clear out the current network settings and then reconfigure it to "join" your wireless network using the AirPort Utility setup application.
To perform the Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule....
Pull the power cord from the back of the device
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule and keep holding it an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    On your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Continue
Follow the guided setup and choose the "join" option when it appears duriing the setup
You will need to know the exact type of wireless security that the Belkin router is using to enter this information during the setup of the Belkin. Otherwise, the Time Capsule cannot join the network, and you will receive an error message after the configuration process.

  • Question about wireless connectivity...

Where exactly in the Verizon contract, or Terms of Service does it state that wireless connectivity is NOT guaranteed as solid connectivity, nor are provisioned speeds while wireless as well? Would be a wonderful thing to have proof of just in case, if you get my drift.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's there in the TOS;  but finding you the exact paragraphs and lines is not productive.
A brief amount of research would provide:
    >that the fastest most common in recent years wireless throughput is 54Mbps (wireless G) which is only at half the speed of a wired connection.
yes, one might be able to receive 108Mbps, but what that actually is is (2) 54 Mb streams hitting you at the same time.  Your 'receiving' equipment must
be  capable  (neither the 2 streams nor the receiving quipment is provided by your ISP)
yes wireless N is out, but one usually has to purchase own equipment for that (not provided by Verizon) (or any other ISP that I am aware of)
     >As has already been mentioned by posters before me, the various things that can possibly affect your wireless reception include everything electronic in your immediate area AND ALSO any of your neighbor's electronics if you share a common wall
    >even the computer you are trying to use, in too many ways, can affect your wireless reception
SO there is really no way anybody could guarantee wireless

  • Wireless connection not working after installed newest Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update programs

    Hi, everyone!
I've installed some newest programs through Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update and just after that my wireless connection has stopped working. Here are the installed programs:

Also in Device Manager, there are now the two "Other devices" bellow with a yellow question point and a yellow exclamation point by side:
    Bluetooth Hands-free Audio;
    Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver.
Does anyone have any idea what can be done to have these issues solved?
P.S.: when I click Fn+F5 it shows only the Bluetooth Radio.

    Hello and welcome,
I've seen something like this on XP machines after updates a couple of times now - my T61, a friend's T400, and his daughter's T61.  I guess that makes 3
_Maybe_  your situation is the same.
The fix in all 3 cases was to go to device manager and uninstall the wifi driver.  Then scan for hardware changes and let it reinstall the driver.  Something about how Access Connections or some other networking mangement thingy was hooking the drivers I guess.
On both of the friend's machines, the wired networking was also b0rked.  Same fix there.

  • Deskjet 3050 J610a - Unexpected wireless connection problem.

    Running:
    MacOSX 10.7.4
    HP Software: HP_Lion_Ink_SW_v12.13.17
Printer: Deskjet 3050 J610a had been working perfectly through wireless connection from a
MacBook5,1 Intel Core 2 Duo, while I had been using HP Software HP_Installer_DJF4100_v9.7.1, that was *not* meant for this printer, but I could 'ADD" the printer Deskjet 3050 via System Preferences, through HP Socket,
Looking [unwisely] for a more "functional"  configuration, I looked up HP support and found that a specific software had been released for computers running "Lion".
So I uninstalled the previous DJF4100 software, restarted the computer, and installed the new software and drivers for Lion as indicated above.
Now the printer Deskjet 3050 J610a shows up in the computer's network under 'Devices"  as
"HPJ610a.047DED", Network Type:Computer-to-Computer. It is also detected with "
Security:None", whereas my whole home Wi-Fi network is encrypted with WPA/WPA2 Personal.
I could of course regress to the previous software and configuration, but before doing that I would like to understand why this new software that has been released by HP for Mac computers running Lion is behaving in such a way, why the printer shows as a stand alone device (which it never did before).
As I said, before I regress to the previous configuration, using a software that originally is not the one required by the printer, neither by the computer's operating system, I welcome all information and suggestions.
    I need that wireless connection!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Not the average problem with wireless connection. Please help me..

I've been having wireless connection problems ever since I upgraded to Verizon FiOS from Verizon Wireless. Before upgrading to Verizon FiOS in the fall of 2012, my brother's laptop connected just fine with the connection. After upgrading to Verizon FiOS, my brother's laptop could not connect to the internet. It showed the wireless connection signal as Excellent, but I could not access the internet. Either it would be extremely slow or there would be no connection at all. Also, the router would sometimes restart itself randomly, and it was extremely annoying for me since I am hardwired with my desktop.
This was weird because my iPod Touch connected perfectly fine to the wifi. So I thought it must be the laptop. But I brought the laptop over to my cousin's house, who also happens to have Verizon FiOS, and the laptop connected perfectly fine. I called Verizon and none of the technicians knew what the problem was. We tried disabling and enabling the router, changing the channels, and anything that was on the list. They couldn't help me and I was extremely disappointed because not only am I not accessing the internet with my brother's laptop, but I am also paying for the service too. The last technician I called in 2012 decided to send me a new router. I hoped this would work, but it did not. This router, too, would completely reset itself numerous times before settling down and letting me use the internet.
I gave up after that. But in the spring of 2013, I got really fed up with the service I was receiving and I decided to call Verizon again. Again, Verizon tried to help me fix the laptop with their tools and solution guides. But nothing good came out of it, so I decided to ask for a technician to come to my apartment to fix it. We scheduled a day and I was pretty excited since I was almost positive that the connection for the laptop would be fine by then.
I was wrong. The technician came and only stayed for about 20 minutes. He said it must be the laptop or it must be that the walls are too thick in my apartment. But that can't be it since, in my cousin's house, the router is on the second floor and my brother was using his laptop on the first floor. So it couldn't be the laptop nor the house. So we came to no conclusion. He just attached a mini router to the laptop and hardwired it. I wasn't so content but I was glad my brother could finally use the internet now.
About three months pass by and I decide to get myself a new laptop. I get it and I am hoping the wireless connection works. It did, so I was almost positive that it was my brother's laptop that was the problem, not the wireless signal. I go on vacation for a few days and I connect perfectly fine at my friend's house. When I return home and try to connect to my wireless connection, it didn't work!
At this point, I am extremely frustrated. I decided to call Verizon again to replace my router because it was being extremely annoying. It kept resetting itself and I was tired of it. I replaced the router, and this is the router I currently have, but I STILL have the same problem. It resets itself on its own time and I hate it because I'm always in the middle of something. Wow, just wow. There is nothing they could do to help me fix this. I call up a technician, for the millionth time, and he tells me he can't access my router. This occurred with the previous technician who sent me the new router. He tells me his tools are not working and tells me he'll call me back the next day.
It was the next day and I did not receive any phone call. I am extremely disappointed in Verizon FiOS' service and it's customer service. I leave it alone and I just hardwire my laptop to the router. Of course this works, but what's the point of having a laptop when I have to keep it hardwired on my desk? After a day or two, I decide to check if the wireless connection works, and it did. I was surprised. But every now and then, it would shift on and off. Most of the time, the wireless connection is either EXREMELY SLOW or I get none at all, nonetheless, it still says the connection is Excellent.
Please, if there is anyone who could help or try to help me, I would most appreciate it. If there is more information that you need, ask me and I will try my best to provide it to you.

Admittedly, that IS a strange case. Unfortunately, it sounds like all possible troubleshooting has been done by the tech support agents. you mentioned that you were dissatisfied with your other service, did it have a similar problem? theres a possibility of dirty fiber or a bad ONT port, but the random rebooting of the router would almost exclusively be a bad router. question: is the router in the same location as before?

  • New 6500 E709n loses wireless connection when it or laptop sleeps... & other problems!

Just got this printer and am hoping we can get it to work because we really like it.  I believe we've done everything right - it is connected to PC via USB, and to laptop via wireless network.  Both computers are Dells running XP.  Our wireless router is a Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G.  We installed the disk on both.  Immediately after installing on the laptop by plugging in USB and then unplugging, we were able to get it to work.  We printed and scanned from both . . . UNTIL the printer went into power save mode.
When it sleeps it loses all the network connections (but will still print from PC).  Even the icons disappear from the laptop after it sleeps.  The only way to get it to work with the laptop again is to start all over, plug in the laptop, enter the WPA key again, and so on.  Then it's finebut for just a short while.  Now, when I registered my protection plan, I was on the phone with a techie guy and asked him if it's normal to have to keep entering the key every time you want to print, and he actually said that maybe I shouldn't let the printer sleep - wow! I want to conserve energy, so I may even want to shut it off, okay, and I don't feel I should have to go through this rigamarole every time I want the darn thing to just be available to the network.  Furthermore, what's the sense of having to turn "Wireless Radio" on and off all the time???
Anyway, there are other problems and the menus in the internal web browser is about as confusing as it can be.  Is the passphrase the same as a WPA key?  There's a passphrase in there which I did not enter, and I don't know what it is because it's been disguised with dots.  When I enter the WPA key on the front panel of the printer, it doesn't stick.  One thing I noticed in the instructions is to keep telephones away from it, so I moved ours (was right next to it) but it's still being ornery.
In addition, the scan function only works from the software, not as a standalone if I use the front panel.  When using the button on the front panel, sometimes it sees the laptop, sometimes it doesn't, and then it starts to scan, but a menu pops up on the computer asking to update the buttons, and then nothing happens.
Have we a clunker on our hands that should be returned, or is there a remedy?  All suggestions welcome!

Let me answer the easy stuff first:
Yes, the passphrase is the same as the WPA-PSK key.
No, it's not normal to have to re-enter the wireless security key over and over again.  Politely tell our service agent that he is mistaken on this point.
There's no sense in having to turn the radio on and off all the time to get the printer to remain on the network.
When the printer goes into power-save mode, can you still access the printer's internal web page by browsing to it's IP address?  When the printer loses wireless connectivity, can you wake the printer by pressing any of the buttons on the front panel?
I have a couple more questions:
What WRT54G HW version do you have (it'll be on the bottom label of the router)?
What version of FW does your router have?  You'll have to browse to the router's internal web page to find out.
Finally, change the WPA-PSK group key renewal period to the largest value possible.  Tell if this affects the frequency of printer losing Wi-Fi connectivity?
One more question.  After you have the printer connected to your wireless network and it's working, if you turn the printer off (via the power button), wait five seconds then unplug it then plug it back in and turn it on, does it connect to your network?
