Wireless not re-connecting

I'm having difficulty setting up OS X to reconnect to my preferred network automatically. I initially noticed this on my friend's G5 desktop but I'm now seeing it on my MacBook Pro. I'm not surprised about it for me- the wireless network in my apartment is terrible. But, in both cases, I would expect OS X to reconnect to the network ASAP. On my previous Windows laptop, I would always seem to be connected to my network. My network is the only one in the preferred networks list. I set my MBP up the same way. Yet, last night I was showing my friends a YouTube video and the wireless icon on the menu bar was empty. To get the internet back I had to click on it and choose my network again. This happened two more times throughout the night.
My friend's G5 shouldn't do this. The G5 is about 30 feet from the router- which shouldn't be pushing the limit with one wall in between- and when it's connected to the network, the menu bar icon shows full signal strength. Yet, randomly, it loses the connection to the network. And instead of automatically reconnecting, you must choose the network from the wireless signal icon in the menu bar. His computer is also set up with Preferred Networks (not Automatic) with one a single network on the list. Weird thing about his computer, is that when it boots up it's already disconnected.
Why doesn't OS X automatically reconnect when it has a single preferred wireless network? Should we both be using the automatic setting instead? The password are saved to the keychain, for the record. Anyway, any help would be great- thanks!

I'm having similar problems with a G4 powerbook. But the intermittant loss degenerated quickly, now I lose my signal and can't get it back at all without physical handling the powerbook. I am recently installed DD-WRT on a new Buffalo Router and also a new Airport Express, and I thought that might be an issue, but a G3 powerbook and a Windows box runs fine on the same network.
I'm wondering if its possibly related to heat build-up in the laptop? Try seeing if the wireless card is running particularly hot.

  • Wireless Not Staying Connected

    Hi
I am running Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Early 2011 Model.
I recently swapped the Airport and Bluetooth module from another MacBook Pro at home.
This was so I can fully utilise Handoff etc and have Bluetooth 4.0
Everything was working fine for an hour or so, but then all of a sudden WiFi stopped working.
I am connected to my home WiFi network however no webpages can load.
When I am in Network Utility there is very minimal packet usage.
Sometimes a webpage will load, but then the next link won't.
Also when I ping a site (eg. google.com)
It can alternate between request timeout and 64-bytes from .......
Has anyone else had this issue ?
    Thankyou in advance

Officejet 6500 and 8500's are pretty well known for falling off the network upon sleeping.  Sorry...
Setting a static IP may not actually work unless you pick an IP address outside the range that the DHCP server issues.
A quick search of Trendnet told me that on most of them DHCP serves-up IP addresses from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200 so if you pick a number outside this range for your static IP that would be best.
Are you in a position to use Ethernet instead of wireless?  That may solve the problem.  Also, a nightly reboot of the router may help (put it on a lamp timer to cut power - even for a few hours in the middle of the night - then reboot).

  • Wireless not keeping connection since Infinity HH3...

    My complaint was...................
Infinity HH3 - and using Linksys Wireless N notebook adapter WPC300N (same one used for my
old BT BB) the Laptop now needs  the channel changed about twice a day to connect online.
The Network icon says it has a strong connection to the hub but when starting FF or IE they
    just don't get online.
I got a link from an answer to another similar complaint to update the driver. I initially did this with no success.
I then went to the makers Cisco and got a driver update for the above - and Lo & Behold it worked.
Well for the first hour anyway.
Just thought I'd post this in case it helps someone else. I'll update this report tomorrow.

I'd wager it would be the Hub.
I've had a similar experience and the connection problems happened on 4 individual devices, iPad, apple TV, laptop, computer etc therefore pointing to the route/hub rather than each and every other device.
However that said there is always a caveat with wireless, distance, thickness of walls, channel and encrytption type all affect performance.

  • Airport wireless not holding connection

I have a comcast highspeed cable with a linksys modem and wireless router in my home. I am able to get a very strong connection however lose it several minutes later. I have to go
disconnect the power to the modem and router wait 30 seconds and reconnect. Then everything works great again for a short period then loses connection again.
I have contacted linksys and adjusted some settings and even swapped out for a new one with a later firmware version with no improvement. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

capco, Welcome to the discussion area!
You may be experiencing RF interference due to another device operating at 2.4 GHz. Try changing the channel used by the base station until you find a channel that works better or you run out of channels. See KB 58543, AirPort: Potential sources of interference.

  • Wireless not starting

When I first bought this laptop the wireless connection automatically occurred during startup. About two years ago, it stopped. Now, if left alone, it takes 2 to 10 minutes for the wireless to fire up, or, I can manually press the F12 buttom (wireless) but I must press it 2-3 times for it to work. I had the cable tech support go through and remove any adware, malware, check for viruses (none found) and clean the laptop from top to bottom. He also checked my configurations. I've updated both the wireless adapter driver and updated the laptop's bios. These things did not solve the problem. The cable modem is not the trouble as this problem happens regardless of what modem I use. Any help? Thanks.

I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your  HP Pavilion dv7-7205DX Notebook and issues with the Wireless not staying connected. Here is a link to Notebook PC does not automatically connect to WLAN if undocked while in Standby Mode. Which I feel is the issue. Here is another document on troubleshooting the Wireless Network. Have you ever had the Notebook back cover off the Notebook. I was just wondering if the WLan Mini card had become loose or disconnected. Here is a link to a YouTube video, so you could check this. I hope this helps, please let me know. Thanks.

  • I am trying to setup wireless using my old dome Airport ExtremeBase station. I had previously used it about 5 years ago when I had dial up but have now switche to DSL with Windstream. I can not get connecte as ABS keeps trying to dial up(the phone number)

I am trying to setup wireless using my old dome Airport Extreme Base station. I had previously used it about 5 years ago when I had dial up but have now switched to DSL with Windstream. I can not get connected as the ABS keeps trying to dial up(the old phone number). When I tried to change my network settings an annoying popup window says "your network settings have been changed by another application'. I have no idea what the message is all about and when I close this window it immediately pops up again and prevents me -as far as I can tell -from changing my Airport settings?  I need advice on how to get this wireless setup done. Maybe a reset? or something else? I have the DSL phone line plugged into WIndsteam Seimens Speedstream 4200 modem and then the ethernet (yellow) wire from the WIndsteam Seimens Speedstream 4200 modem to the port on the dome that is a circle of dots.

1)Can you explain how using the AEBS as a bridge will work with the Seimens Speedstream4200?
As a bridge, the AEBS will basically become a wireless access point. This will allow the AEBS to provide a wireless network, but still allow the Speedstream to provide NAT & DHCP services for the wireless clients connected to the AEBS. If the AEBS was left as a router, you would have a double-NAT condition which isn't necessary bad in itself, but would create a second subnet. That would make it more difficult for clients connected to the AEBS to access clients connected to the Speedstream.
    2) Is there a link that will guide me through the steps to set the AEBS as a bridge?
You can easily reconfigure the AEBS as a bridge using the AirPort Utility.
ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
3)Can I just connect the DSL phone line to the AEBS and eliminate the Speedstream4200?
Unfortunately no. The AEBS does not have a built-in DSL modem. You will still need the Speedstream to provide this function.

  • HP Officejet 6500A Plus not staying connected to wireless network

Just picked up a HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One Printer - E710n the other week and set it all up and it was working wonderfully. But I noticed after it goes into sleep mode it disconnects from the wireless network and doesn't reconnect.
I will get a overview of how I have it all set up.
I have a DSL modem with a TRENDnet TEW-639GR router connected to it. I have set my router to reserve IP addresses for the computer and printer. That way I can leave the computer and printer wireless IP settings as automatic and they will always get the same IP address. I do this for the wireless network at my parents place as well and it works perfectly with their HP Photosmart C7280.
I also set up the HP ePrintCenter feature on the printer so that I can print by sending the printer an email. When I first set it all up this was working great. I tested it all and it was awesome. When I would log onto the ePrint website it would show as connected and it was all good.
So then what happened was it was all fine then the next day when we want to print something the computer says the printer is offline. I go on the HP ePrintCenter website and it says not connected. I print out a wireless network report page and it says not connected. After I printed that test page, I guess it woke up the printer enough or something as it then connected to the router and printed fine as well as showed up as connected on the ePrintCenter website. So all was good. Then the next day the printer goes to sleep and again it shows as disconnected.
Should it not be staying connected in sleep mode? How will the printer know something is being sent to it and that it should wake up if it is not staying connected?
Any suggestions of what I should change with the settings? I suppose I could try setting the IP settings as static on the printer itself but I shouldn't need to as I set it to static on the router. When it finally does reconnect it does always keep the same IP. If that is what is required I guess I could do that but then what is the point in having an automatic setting if it doesn't work? I would rather have this issue fixed that have to do a work around for it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
The printer should stay connected to your wireless network after the printer enters the sleep mode.
This is not an expected behavior.
I believe such an issue may be caused due to a signal quality or any conflict as too many broadcust on the same channel.
Please try the following steps in order to better understand the issue:
Follow the Wireless Setup Wizard if your printer currently disconnected
    Enter the Setup menu.
    Enter the Network menu.
    Click Wireless.
    Click Wireless Test Report.
What is the signal quality provided by the report and what channel used to broadcast by your router?
If you may scan and attach the report, it may help to better understand any possible cause.
    Regards,
    Shlomi

Can you enlighten me what can I do I need to use my e-mail program urgently !!!
    Thanks for your help

I'm not sure what "IPS wireless" is, but unless you have an Apple Wi-Fi base station (such as a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Express), AirPort Utility won't see anything.
You might try defining a new SMTP server to see if that will work any better.

  • PC will not automatically connect to wireless network on startup...

Hi all - I have a WRTG54 wirless router with the latest firmware.  Windows XP Home SP2.  I have a mixed network with two wired PCs and one wireless.  The wireless PC will not automatically connect to the network. To connect to the network i have to go to the wireless network properties box and check "let windows automatically configure network"  Once I do this the wirelss PC connects with no problem.  Unfortunatley, whenever i turn the PC off and turn it back on the "let windows automatically configure network" is unchecked and i have to go through the process of checking it again.  I uninstalled the wireless adapter and reinstalled the drivers only and then ran the windows wireless setup wizard but the problem persists.  Any help on this would be much appreciated.!!!! Thanks!!

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Do not let "Windows automatically configure your network".  Instead do the following:
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings).  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  It should connect automatically.  If you still have trouble, in the computer, temporarily disable your software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps.
Some users have reported improved wireless connections by switching to WPA  ( = WPA with TKIP)  encryption.

  • Does not automatically connect to wireless network anymore

Mac Book does not automatically connect to know networks any longer.

    Hi sashton,
When troubleshooting Wi-Fi connectivity issues, I find the following resource has the most relevant information:
Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Furthermore, you may want to avoid giving your network a common name. While the following article (and excerpt) refer to iOS devices, the same applies for your Mac:
Avoid giving your wireless network a common name (SSID)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4450
If you were to give your wireless network a common name (SSID), users of your network who use iOS devices [sic] and are away from your network would run the risk of joining a different network with the same name. Having joined the unexpected network, they would be exposed to potential data theft.
Because of this security issue, Apple maintains a list of common or ambiguous SSIDs, including the default SSID for many commercially available access points, as well as the SSIDs "wireless" and "default". If your network's name is on the list, any iOS device [sic] that joins the network stores the access point's BSSID and associates it with the network's SSID. Subsequently, it will only auto-join the network if the access point's BSSID matches the information the device has stored. This avoids joining a different network with the same name.
Therefore, you may want to refer to the following article when configuring your Wi-Fi router:
iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
    Thanks,

  • W500 with Intel 3500 wireless not connecting to N network

I have a W500 4058-CTO under windows 7.  Wireless N support working well at 145Mb/s on average.  It was being somewhat flaky when I docked/undocked about turning off the wireless radio.  I updated to the latest drivers from Lenovo, big mistake.  It installed the following on an update:
    Access Connections:  v5.61
    Intel wireless driver: v13.01.1000
Rebooted and now the wireless refuses to connect to the N network (using a Netgear WNR3500L).  If I change the netgear down to WPA-PSK with TKIP, then it connects in G mode.  Setting the netgear to WPA-PSK[TKIP} + WPA2-PSK [AES} and setting the W500 wireless to WPA2-PSK [AES] fails to connect and provides me this fine error:
Dynamic key exchange did not succeed within configured time
My original configuration on the W500 before the update was WPA2-PSK [AES].  I removed/re-installed the Intel & Access Connections drivers/software.  Same situation.  Note that if I set my router to G and the W500 to WPA-PSK with TKIP it connects at 54mb fine.  'Course, that isn't making full use of my network.
Anyone have an idea on how to resolve this?

    Try this:
    In Windows:
Go into your power options (Control Panel - Power Options)
There are 3 options: Balanced, Power Saver and (may be hidden) High Performance.
Either choose High Performance (there's no Save or Ok; it changes immediately) and try connecting again
    or
choose either of the other plans and click "Change plan settings" and the "Change advance power settings". Scroll down, if necessary, to "Wireless Adapter Settings" and click on the + to view the "Power Saving Mode". Click the + again to reveal the options for "On battery" and "Plugged in". For both, choose 'Maximum Performance'. Any of the other three options ('Low', 'Medium' and 'Maximum Power Savings') may cause this issue.
Let me know if that helps.

My iMac is not staying connected to the wireless internet.  My provider tells me it's a computer issue and not their problems.  Any suggestions?

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 7
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 8
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • My Iphone 5 will not automatically connect to my wireless network

Each time I want to connect my home wireless, I need to go into settings and manually connect,  rather than automatic connection, which is what happened with my i4s.  How can I change this?

I downloaded and installed the latest software for the iPhone 5 (Version 6.1.3) - the version originally installed was 6.1.2.  Same problem exists - iPhone will not automatically connect to my home WiFi.  Even after I select my network and it connects.  If I turn WiFi off and then back on again, it will not automatically connect.  The iPhone screen states "Known networks will be joined automatically.  If no known networks are available, you will have to manually select a network."  How do I get the iPhone to work as specified above?  Thanks.
