Wireless VLAN and Native VLAN

OK, Im a bit confused about what to do with the native VLAN. I know that for QoS/CoS, I should not use VLAN1 as the native VLAN. I also know that I should use a separate VLAN as the management VLAN. So Im left thinking, do I need a native VLAN? If I do, can I just make a dumb VLAN that goes nowhere and use that as the native VLAN? Or am I just completely missing something. Thanks

The native VLAN must also be your management VLAN for Cisco APs.
The Native VLAN can be any number, as long as you configure it accordingly.
Also keep in mind that the local RADIUS server, and DHCP will only deliver to the native VLAN. If you intend to use either of those services on the non-native VLAN/SSID, you'll need to have a layer three device on the line to forward that traffic.

Ok in short YES this can be done.. here is the AP configuration..
Step 1>> Configure the SSID and map it with respective Vlans..
Step 2>> Create the sub interafce int dot11 0.5 / int fa 0.5 (encapsulation dot1q 5 , bridge-group 5)and int dot11 0.6 / int fa 0.6(encapsulation dot1q 6 , bridge-group 6)
Step 3>> Create the sub interface 0.100 for both Radio and Fa and under this (encapsulation dot1q 100 native , bridge-group 1)
Step 4>> Make sure all the interafces are up and running and Try to ping the VLAN 100 interafce ip addr from the AP to verify.

Wireless VLANs and Layer2/3 VLANs

Dear,
The vlans created for the mapping of SSID in embedded AP on cisco 1941 can be connected/communicated to the VLAN created on Layer2/3 switch.
Lets say i have created 3 vlans (say 200,201,202) for 3 ssid and the vlan created on switch (say 200,201,202) can be communicated?
Or these wireless vlan are purely for the mapping of ssid?. Thanks

CAPWAP Wireless VLAN in Routed Campus LAN

I am configuring CISCO Wireless LAN Controller in College campus. we have the following components
1. CISCO 4510R as core switch and a centralized WLC is connected to Core Switch
2. CISCO 3560 L3 switch at Distribution Layer Switch
3. CISCO LWAP 1142
I want to configure Wireless VLAN in a college campus. Wireless LAN. The requirement is to configure Distribution switch as L3 so that VLAN will not reach till the Core Switch. That is the Link between Distribution and Core Switch will be Layer 3 routed link and not a Trunk Link.
Since it is a routed back bone environment, VLAN is configured only in distribution layer switches. So, these configured VLAN will not reach core
switch.
With that said, is it technically possible to achieve the Wireless VLAN in this above proposed setup.?
Do I have to configure Trunk between Distribution Switch (APs are connected) and Core Switch (WLC is connected), to pass the Wireless VLAN in the trunk link?

We are in the process of moving to a mostly routed Campus, and had similar questions and a few more. We will be using only EIGRP, with each enclave set-up as a stub. I was wondering if I can modify our wireless network to be strictly routed, and remove all the trunk/access configurations from the switch ports facing theAPs, and hard code (static) all of them to IP routed ports. We only have one WLC active, with one back-up. The WLC is facing our core switches in a LAG set-up. The network was originally set-up with all the dynamic interfaces for each AP set-up in a GLBP fashion between our two cores. Each AP had a dynamic interface created in the WLC and added to one AP group. All of our APs are now connected via ethernet to the wired infrastructure, so none of our APs are in true MESH fashion anymore. We use Microsoft DHCP to issue out IPs to our APs.
I was wondering if I can remove the dynamic interfaces from the WLC, and use EIGRP to sort of the routing of our wireless network. I would create L3 SVIs (multiple in some cases) on all the switches that APs are attached too, and modify each Microsoft DHCP scope to point to whatever AP model was used and to point to the WLC. Now, what I'm unsure on, how would this behave with no Native Vlan/User Vlans configured on trunk ports pointing toward the AP. I was thinking of using what was once used at the Native Vlan (subnet info), and using that same subnet to create a IP routed port facing the AP and modify the AP IP via the WLC to select static assign. I can place IP helper addresses under the routed port to face our DHCP server (not sure if this really matters, if I already place them under the user L3 SVIs). Before, I had a DHCP scope for the native and user subnet. Would the AP still be able to connect to the WLC correctly, if I delete the scope (used before for the native vlan), since it usually resolved the WLC IP via option 43 (it can use DNS instead). I would imagine so, since I will be placing these networks under EIGRP to advertise within our Campus, which has L3 reachability to the WLC. And under the user subnets, I would still configure the Microsoft DHCP scope to face the AP model and controller IP. There just woundn't be a scope for the subnet that use to be for the Native Vlan. For any new set-up, I would pre-provision the AP under a user subnet access port, and then hard code it within the controller a static IP, to deploy later at the new site. For routed networks, are dynamic interfaces really necessary on the WLC? As long as L3 is working as intended, and the user switch has reachability to the Microsoft DHCP server, then users should be able to pull IPs fine through, correct? I've tested already with a PTP bridge we have, and hardcoded the ports to IP routed ports, and advertised it via EIGRP, and haven't noticed any issues with the customers pulling new IPs. I wanted to gather more information before deploying this for across the board to our other types of wireless set-ups. I'm not using FlexConnect. I've moved most of our 1552e APs over to local mode recently, which have wired connections to the LAN.

Wireless VLAN question

I have two SSIDs on my Cisco 1242 APs.
On one of the SSIDs i have clients that will constantly broadcast data (required).
Will the brodcast traffic reach my other SSID? If so, is there a way to avoid it?
Will creating a separate wireless VLAN on my AP and assigning it to that SSID contain broadcast traffic so it does not flood my other SSID?

Broadcast is allowed on the same subnet, so yes, broadcast will affect everyone in that subnet. Creating multiple subnets is what allows you to control the broadcast. Here is a link for autonomous for creating multiple vlan's.

Wireless vlan on Dell powerswitch 5448 to ASA5510

I am trying to create a wireless vlan on a Dell 5448 which uplinks to a subinterface on an ASA5510. My issue is I can't seem to get the switchport to trunk correctly between the vendor devices. Essentially I am trying to "fix" our wireless network that is bouncing since a new neighbor moved in with powerful RF signals in an already polluted space. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have built an interface of the 2106 for VLAN5 and the interfaces for the 2106 and the bridges are built as trunks and all vlans are allowed. If I plug in a laptop on the 3560 in the new building, and the port is assigned to VLAN5, I get an address and can surf out just fine. I will scrub the 2106 & 3750 configs and try and upload them. To further test I moved the DHCP scope onto the 2106 and my wireless client is able to get an address from the 2106, I can ping the interface on the 2106 (192.168.5.2) I just cant connect to the 3750 switch.

Question about Wireless Design and Controller

Hi Everyone,
Although I am not new to Cisco, I have somewhat limited experience with Wireless in general. I was hoping to get your help with the following:
We currently have a total of 8 1130AG, 4 on each floor. They were configured a few years ago, and now we are looking to update the design a bit. Each AP has its own SSID, and just provide internet access. Looking at the configuration, I noticed that they are not configured to use proper channels, just random channels (9, 10, 11, instead of 1, 6, 11, etc.). I noticed that when I roam between one AP to another, I lose about 4-8 pings before I re-establish connectivity again.
Here are my questions:
1. Do I need a controller in order to use just one SSID for the whole setup instead of the 8 seprate ones we currently have?
2. Will the controller helps in providing seamless transition when a client roams between AP's?
3. Is it normal to loose connectivity roaming around?
4. Can I reconfigure the current setup to use just one SSID and provide better transition between AP without the use of a controller?
5. Which controller would you recommend?
We don't have a need to anything fancy ,I am aware that I can enable multiple SSID, VLAN's, etc. Just trying to keep it as simple as possible, yet reliable.

1. With 8 AP's only, a WLC would be nice-to-have but not necessary. You can configure WLSE and it will do some limited functions.
2. This depends on the signal strengths, wireless coverage and configuration. If you enable WLSE, for instance, and you have no wireless black spots, then roaming should be no issues.
3. See #2.
4. You can configure multiple SSID (up to 16 are broadcasted) but if one AP doesn't have the SSID you use for roaming, the association will drop when the client tries to join that particular AP. It's like mobile phone towers. If your carrier is not in the area, you sure won't be able to use your mobile phone in that area.
5. For 8 1130 APs, I'd recommend the smallest of the lot: 2106 with either 6, 12 or 25 AP licenses. I'd recommend you the 25 AP licenses. If your finances allow you something bigger, then consider either the 4402 (25 AP licenses) or the 5508.

the Native Port on the tunnel interface = 1 and native vlan tagging is enabled on the switch.
what happens to untagged frames that hit the tunnel port from the customer? Imagine that they dont have their port as a trunk and are instead emitting untagged frames?
are these dropped or simply have a single Q-tag pushed and are then tunnelled through the carrier network?
I have followed the recommendation of making the trunk port have a native vlan that is not the native vlan of any of the tunnel ports.

Normally double-tag traffic is seen as NON-IP traffic by metro devices, since they cannot see beyond first tag.
Untagged customer traffic will behave like IP traffic in metro network, since it will have only one tag.
You can use a trick - create an IP access list on trunk port with "deny ip any any" - basically denying all IP traffic. That should stop all traffic that was not tagged by the customer. Ofcourse that will disable your management - so you need to plan this.
If more than one customer is using same S-VLAN, and one customer has e.g. VLAN 3 untagged, and other one has VLAN 5 untagged, their VLANs will be interconnected.

Wireless Controller and security

Hi,
One of our companies is implementing a wireless network . We would like to do the following :
- For conference rooms we would like to have a separate wireless network which has access to internet . All pc's that are not from the company should be able to connect.
PC's that are from the company should not be able to use the wireless connection.This wireless network should be setup without authentication.
- Secure wireless connection : Company pc's should only use the secure wireless network .
I was thinking about using mobility groups but that doesn't block a company pc going to the unsecured wireless network and connect himself .
I'm not an expert in wireless so hopefully I'm not asking a stupid question :-)

You can use vlan override to allow certain ssid's on certain ap's. To block company pc's from accessing the guest network, you can either use a webauth and create a username and password that is only given out to guest and not internal users. Antoher way is to lock down the wireless through group policy.

Sierra Wireless driver for native support for 10.5 displays wrong network

Anyone getting the wrong wireless network with the Sierra Wireless driver for native support in Leopard? Sometimes when my AT&T 881u cannot connect, the mini card starts displaying Verizon information. This only happens once every couple of weeks. AT&T says its Sierra Wireless' problem and Sierra says the issue is Apple's.
I took a picture of the issue with my iPhone. I'll post a link as soon as I get a chance to sync.
This card normally works great, but this issue is really strange since AT&T G3 network shouldn't be compatible with Verizon's EVDO.

When you get that installed, come back with print server model for setup help. Since there isn't auto setup software for OS X, we need to setup all the details.

Wireless modem and Airport Express.. one at a time

Recently my internet provider upgraded my old plug in modem to a newer wireless model. Now it seems that the current setting allow communication with only one or the other at the same time. If I want to be online with the wireless modem and send my iTunes music via Airport Express to my sound system, no dice. I have to either click on the modem up in the Airport choices to be online and listen to iTunes through the computer speakers, or go offline to listen to music through the sound system and Airport Express.
I'm sure I'm just missing something in preferences or settings somewhere.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Reporting Services in both SharePoint 2013 connected and native mode?

Is it possible to configure Reporting Services (SQL Server 2014) to support both SharePoint 2013 connected mode and local Report Server in native mode on the same server using multiple instances of RS? The reason for this setup is to avoid having to purchase
SharePoint Enterprise CALs for other users than analysts and still be able to publish standard reports to all employees.
Management and analysts -> Custom reports published through SharePoint 2013 Enterprise (SP2013 ECALs and SQL Server 2014 core license). Data alerts and Power View enabled if possible.
All employees -> Standard reports published through Native Mode Report Server (SQL Server 2014 core license). Possible subscriptions.
I find the official documentation a bit lacking in this area but can't find anything stating against the above. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could confirm before planning the installs.
What I'm aiming for is somewhat similar to the "2 Tier Topology" described at: Example

As per my understanding, you want to install two SQL Server instances on the same server, and configure one of the Reporting Services to SharePoint integrated mode, another to native mode.
According to my knowledge, multiple instances of Reporting Services on the same computer, where one instance runs in SharePoint integrated mode and the other instance runs in native mode is supported. But we must run all report server instances at the same
level. For example, if we are using SQL Server 2014, all report server instances must be SQL Server 2014.
Besides, Analysis Services and Reporting Services can be installed as standalone servers, in scale-out configurations, or as shared service applications in a SharePoint farm. Installing the services in a farm enables BI features that are only available in
SharePoint, including PowerPivot for SharePoint and Power View.

The Difference between Extending a Wireless network and WDS?

I have an Extreme (n) and an Express (n).
I want to make sure the signal is strong upstairs and share a printer (connected to the express) and use AirTunes. I also may add an external drive to the Extreme.
What's the difference between Extending a Wireless Network and using WDS? Will there be a speed difference?

I think you don't get it
If I have another draft N router that operates at 2.4G and I have only n devices I can still use WDS and it will connect using draft n in the 2.4G band.
If one g device connects to the network will go in mixed mode.
The AEBS will still report 130 Mbps for your n clients and 54 for your g clients.
If the other router is g only obviously you can't connect between the two router at n mode but still the AEBS will be in mixed mode and not in g. The Extreme will still report 130 Mbps for the connected n clients.
I can tell you that because I have actually implemented it am not taking off the documentation.
The same device if I try to use the "extend n network" does not even see the AEBS but will happily keep the n in the WDS mode and though the bandwidth is halved it is still more than g.
In any case enough for this!

Suddenly My iphone 4s does not find my wireless printer and sometimes can't find the server.

Wireless network and bluetooth not working on touchsmart 600

This has not worked since day 1 and I have been using wired internet.
I really need to setup a home network and need to use wireless.
Research on the net has led me to belive I should have HP WIRELESS ASSISTANT on my machine... is that correct?
Everytime I try to download it is seem to be for a notepad... mine is a touchsmart desktop...

Issues with Home Hub 3 Wireless. And lousy teleph...

I don't know if this forum is moderated or followed by BT support staff, but I sure hope so.
After coming from Virgn Media for my BB to BT infinity (Awesome speeds btw!) I'm pleased with the connection and, up until today, the support. I now have issues with my Wireless devices on the HH3.
This is the outline of my setup:
I have the Open reach modem connected to the home hub. I then have the 1Gbps ethernet port from the home hub that is connected to a 1Gbps 5 Port switch that connects my wired network together (Consisting of my Xbox, Networked Printer and my Desktop PC). Wireless serves 2 Laptops, an Xperia U phone, and a G5 Ipod touch (not all mine, I have a flat mate).
My issue is that when more than one device connects via WiFi, the WiFi network has serious issues: The connections don't drop per se, but websites are not delivered, data transfer is intermittant at best - i.e. the WiFi network simply does not work. When there is only one device, there is no issue.
Now, being a techie (I don't mean to title drop, but I think it's important that technical support know that I know my stuff) I'm an electrical engineer (The graduate type) and I know my IT - so I have my own idea of what's wrong with this.
Now, as my order was not completed until yesterday, techincal support couldn't/wouldn't help until today. Yesterday, however, I spent hours trying to solve my issues and got as far semi-solving the problem. I managed to get everything working nicely together when Wireless N is disabled and only a/b/g is enabled. Great, but a main selling point is the Wireless N and I want to use this.
So, today I phoned technical support. I should also note here, and I made this perfectly clear with support, that when the WiFi starts to missbehave, the wired network still works perfectly and I have no issues with internet connectivity with any wired devices. So, clearly this is not a line fault - it's on this side, aka, the router WiFi side where the problem resides. Support decided to do a line test anyway - and of course it got the all clear. He then asked me to reset the router (Yey, again after I had done it plenty of times before, only this time I had customised the SSID and the LAN IP addresses and now they need done again). He then went on to state that I should receive an e-mail with instructions on what to do next, and if they are still issues to reply to a text message that will be sent.
Duly, an email arrived. It began with "Sorry you had to call us today about your wireless disconnecting. We’re pleased we could help you get it working again." and continued on with with this theme. No, my problem is not resolved! I phoned back, this time advising me to change channels, and check individual devices to see if they're any conflicts - I did this pretty quickly and disabled and re-enabled WiFi on my Laptop, phone, ipod and still to no avail.
I have now been told that I will get a phone call between 3 and 3:30pm to see if the WiFi will settle down. huh!
I don't mean to be such a pain and sound like such a git, but this is not an issue that I believe the technical support (via the call centre anyway) will be able to solve. This is an issue with the HH3, mine at least, not being able to handle mutiple WiFi devices conntected simualtaneously - all but one on N, the other on G. Now, I'm of the understanding that this shouldn't be a problem. I'm sick of telephone support going through their script without listening to the whole issue either or beleiving that I spent a good 2 hours yesterday getting to the bottom of this. I don't need line tests, I don't need resetting the router, I don't need changing channels - I've did all this!
So it looks as though I'm stuck on HH3 in 'G' for now until we solve this issue.
Further information: I'm using the type A HH3; again wired devices are not impacted in any way from this issue; I have tried multiple different channels; YES! I've reset the router and power cycled it; And this issue happens wether my WiFi devices are 1 meter away from the HH3 or 15 meters away.
Could this be a bad HH3 or frimware issue? Can someone suggest something or highlight something that I've perhaps overlooked or missed?
