With clause join using ISO JOIN Sysntax

Hi,
One of my query looks like:
SELECT t2.col1,
              t3.col1,
              t3.col2
FROM t2
JOIN t2 ON t2.col1 = t3.col1;
Now I need to use a WITH clause to hold some values which has to be used to filter the results from the original query. Something like:
with t1 AS (Select col1
                   FROM tab1)
SELECT t2.col1,
              t3.col1,
              t3.col2
FROM t2
JOIN t3 ON t2.col1 = t3.col1
WHERE t2.col2 = t1.col1;
But the problem is I have to use t1 in the FROM clause before I can use it in the WHERE clause. My question is how do I use t1 in Where clause without joining with t2 & t3?

Hi,
Whenever you have a problem, please post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) from all tables involved, so that the people who want to help you can re-create the problem and test their ideas.
Also post the results you want from that data, and an explanation of how you get those results from that data, with specific examples.
Always say which version of Oracle you're using (for example, 11.2.0.2.0).
See the forum FAQ: https://forums.oracle.com/message/9362002
Do you really need to use a WITH clause?  It's hard to tell what you want to do just by looking at some code that doesn't do it, but it looks like you're trying to do this:
SELECT  t2.col1,
        t3.col1,
        t3.col2
FROM    t2
JOIN    t3  ON t2.col1 = t3.col1
WHERE   t2.col2 IN (
                       SELECT  col1
                       FROM    tab1
If you really did need a WITH clause, you could reference it like this
with t1 AS
    Select col1
    FROM   tab1
SELECT  t2.col1,
        t3.col1,
        t3.col2
FROM    t2
JOIN    t3  ON t2.col1 = t3.col1
WHERE   t2.col2 IN (
                       SELECT  col1
                       FROM    t1
Joining t1, like Alberto suggested, is another possibility, but be careful: if t1.col1 is not unique, you may get duplicate rows.

    I have a movie that was split into 2 clips using HJ Split. First I tried to use Imovie to join the 2 but only the first clip is highlighted in the list of files (the second is there but the name is muted). Also, I can't open the second clip by itself. Someone suggested using Chunk Joiner to recombine the 2. I downloaded chunkjoiner22.bin, expanded it and tried to open the application but got a message saying it was not supported on my system. Does anyone know if there is a different version or another piece of freeware that will do the trick?

  • How to use DG Gryphon Toolkit to communicate with the vehicle using ISO 9141-2 protocol

    Hi All,
    I am trying to use the Dearborn Group's Gryphon Toolkit to communicate with the vehicle & read some parameters. I have downloaded the toolkit from here. I have got the DG's S3 device. This device supports different protocols. But I could not proceed with the protocol selection using the Gryphon LabVIEW Toolkit. It would be nice to get some guidance here. Is there anyone who had worked with the toolkit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Is there anybody who had had exposure to this toolkit? How do we use the toolkit, for eg. to read Engine Coolant temp? I do not see a place where I can specify the PID number. Also is it really important to know a protocol completely by which Gryphon toolkit will communicate with a vehicle - Or just the knowledge of the Gryphon Communication protocol enough? It would be great to have the answers as soon as possible.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Using full outer join of subqueries named using with clause

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a view which is having 2 subqueries vol1 & vol2 with WITH clause. I am joining those 2 subqueries in the main query with FULL OUTER JOIN.
    When i compile that view in a tool like pl/sql developer, It has been compiled successfully.
    But when i call the view creation script from SQL command prompt, It is throwing error as
    from vol1 FULL JOIN vol2 o ON (vol1.ct_reference = vol2.ct_reference and vol1.table_name = vol2.table_name
    ERROR at line 29:
    ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
    Kindly advise whats going wrong.

    that's line 29. Maybe you get a better idea if you strip your operation of all the unneccessary elements until it works.
    There are some known bugs with subquery factoring (aka with clause) and also with ANSI join syntax, but it is hard to tell what happens here based on your description. But one thing is strange - if it is not a result of formatting (not formatting): I would expect the asterisk beneath the unknown table and not beneath the key word FULL.
    P.S.: my editor makes me think it's rather a proportional font thing. Have I already said that I don't like proportional font for SQL code examples?

  • Using with clause

    I am using the sql with following construct , the explain plan doesn't show that index on col1 of tab1 (used in with clause) as used- it just shows a full table access of a view (system) - result set of query in with clause.

    Hi,
    WITH comes immediately before SELECT, not before UPDATE.
    To use WITH in an UPDATE statement, you would say something like:
    UPDATE  EMP_TRACKING_LIST  L
    SET     ACTIVE_FLAG =
            WITH  sub_q  AS
                SELECT  ...
            SELECT  ...
            FROM    sub_q  ...
    ;I don't think there's any way to use values from the sub-query in the WHERE clause of the UPDATE statement itself; MERGE is a much better bet for eliminating redundancy there.
    Sorry, I'm not at a database now, so I can test anything.

    It isn't just about referencing a subquery multiple times. There are other advantages to using 'common table expressions'/'subquery factoring' also.
    Take a look at the example below. It first defines 'dept_costs' as a query block, then defines 'avg_cost' as a new query block and it references the first query block.
    Then the actual query references both query blocks just as if they are tables. And, in fact, in some circumstances Oracle will actually materialize them AS temporary tables.
    Look at how easy it is to understand the entire statement. You can focus first on the 'dept_costs' query block WITHOUT having to look at anything else. That is because the query block is self-contained; you are defining a result set. There is no 'join' or connection to any other part of the statement.
    It is easy for a developer, and for Oracle, to understand what is needed for that one piece.
    Next you can focus entirely on the 'avg_cost' query block. Since it uses the first query block just as if it were a table you can treat it as a table. That means you do NOT even need to look at the first query block to understand what the second query block is doing.
    Same with the actual query. You can analyze it by treating the two query blocks just as if they were other tables.
    Even better you can test the first query block by itself in sql*plus or other tool to confirm that it works and you can create an execution plan for it to make sure it will use an appropriate index. You can also then test the first and second query blocks together to make sure THEY have a proper execution plan.
    Then when you test then entire statement you already know that the query blocks work correctly.
    Try to do THAT with a query that uses nested sub-queries.
    Sure - you could write a set of nested sub-queries to accomplish the same thing (Oracle will sometimes rewrite your query that way itself) but it becomes one big query and the individual pieces are not nearly as easy to see, analyze or understand.
    It can be difficult if not impossible to extract a nested query in order to test it even to just try to get the syntax working. And when you do extract it you will often be testing something that isn't quite exactly the same as when i t was nested.
    So: easier to understand, easier to write and test (especially for new developers) as well as easier to use multiple times without having to duplicate it.
    >
    subquery_factoring_clause
    The WITH query_name clause lets you assign a name to a subquery block. You can then reference the subquery block multiple places in the query by specifying the query name. Oracle Database optimizes the query by treating the query name as either an inline view or as a temporary table.

  • What is the different between Logical complex join and Physical join?

    hi,
    Do somebody know what is the function different between logical complex join in BMM layer and physical join in physical layer?
    Thanks.

    Thank you very much1
    I understand their differentiation:
    In the BMM Complex join (intelligent), means OBI picks the best way from possibly many different ways to join using physical join. FK join forces the same join always, which limits flexibility.

  • Difference between global temporary table and with clause

    what is the difference between global temporary table and with claue .(with clause is used as table in select query)

    what is the difference between global temporary table and with claue .(with clause is used as table in select query)Its big difference between the two.
    Global temporary table exists for a session or a transaction while, with clause lives only for a query.
    GTT is a named permanent storage table whose data flushes away on session exit or at end of a transaction while WITH clause just provides names to a reference data within a query (which is as good as having union subquery in FROM clause)
    eg
    SQL> with c as
      2  (
      3  select 1 id1, 2 id2 from dual union all
      4  select 2,4 from dual union all
      5  select 3,5 from dual)
      6  select * from c
      7  /
           ID1        ID2
             1          2
             2          4
             3          5
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  select *
      2  from
      3  (
      4  select 1 id1, 2 id2 from dual union all
      5  select 2,4 from dual union all
      6* select 3,5 from dual)
      7  /
           ID1        ID2
             1          2
             2          4
             3          5But GTT serves its purpose very well in case of session specific transaction and the scnearion with multiple users working on same data.

  • Oracle query with out using self join

    hi friends,
    i have one table for exeample PERSTATUS
    pk/fK STUDENT NUMBER SUBJECT MARKS STATUS
    1 ACCOUNTS 15 RED
    1 MATHS 35 YELLOW
    1 SCINECE 45 GREEN
    2 ACCOUNTS 55 BROWN
    2 MATHS 35 YELLOW
    2 SCINECE 45 GREEN
    3 ACCOUNTS 15 RED
    3 MATHS 35 YELLOW
    3 SCINECE 45 GREEN
    i want students how status is both red and yellow so i am using self join
    i want students status is both red and yellow so i am using self join
    SELECT PS.STUDENTNUMBER,PS.STATUS,PS.STATUS1 FROM PERSTATUS PS ,PERSTATUS PS1
    WHERE PS.STUDENTNUMBER-PS1.STUDENTNUMER
    PS.STATUS='RED' AND PS1.STAUTS='YELLOW'
    i want students status is both RD and YELLOW AND GREEN so i am using self join( two self joinS}
    SELECT PS.STUDENTNUMBER,PS.STATUS,PS.STATUS,PS2.STATUS FROM PERSTATUS PS ,PERSTATUS PS1,PERSTATUS PS2
    WHERE PS.STUDENTNUMBER-PS1.STUDENTNUMER AND PS.STUDENTNUMBER-PS2.STUDENTNUMBER
    PS.STATUS='RED' AND PS1.STAUTS='YELLOW' AND PS2.STAUTUS='GREEN'
    if i require MORE STATUS then more self joins required, is there any alternative to achive this
    and if results comes in multiple rows are accepted (since with the above query result will come in single row)
    i tried to use group by (studentnumber,status) with status='red' and status='yellow'
    but it is not possible could you povidet he solution

    Hi,
    Whenever you have a problem, please post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for your sample data, and the exact results you want from that data. Explain how you get those results from that data.
    See the forum FAQ {message:id=9360002}
    Here's an example of how to post the sample data:
    CREATE TABLE     perstatus
    (       studentnumber     NUMBER
    ,     subject          VARCHAR2 (10)
    ,     marks          NUMBER
    ,     status          VARCHAR2 (10)
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject,    marks, status)
           VALUES           (1,           'ACCOUNTS', 15,       'RED');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject  ,  marks, status)
           VALUES           (1,           'MATHS',        35,       'YELLOW');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject,    marks, status)
           VALUES           (1,           'SCINECE',  45,       'GREEN');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject,    marks, status)
           VALUES           (2,           'ACCOUNTS', 55,       'BROWN');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject  ,  marks, status)
           VALUES           (2,           'MATHS',        35,       'YELLOW');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject,    marks, status)
           VALUES           (2,           'SCINECE',  45,       'GREEN');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject,    marks, status)
           VALUES           (3,           'ACCOUNTS', 15,       'RED');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject  ,  marks, status)
           VALUES           (3,           'MATHS',        35,       'YELLOW');
    INSERT INTO perstatus (studentnumber, subject,    marks, status)
           VALUES           (3,           'SCINECE',  45,       'GREEN');You were on the right track, thinking about GROUP BY. You're interested in something about the whole group of rows that has the same studentnumber. Looking at any individual row won't tell you if that row is part of the group you're interested in or not.
    If you want to see information about the group as a whole, you can do the whole job with GROUP BY. In this case, studnetnumber is the only thing that an entire group has in common. If you wanted to see the studentnumbers that had both RED and YELLOW, that is:
    STUDENTNUMBER
                1
                3here's one way you could do it:
    SELECT       studentnumber
    FROM       perstatus
    WHERE       status     IN ('RED', 'YELLOW')
    GROUP BY  studentnumber
    HAVING       COUNT (DISTINCT status) = 2  -- That is, both RED and YELLOW
    ORDER BY  studentnumber
    ;But say you wanted to see details about individuals in the group; for example, say we want to see all the columns for students that have all 3 of RED, YELLOW and GREEN, like this:
    STUDENTNUMBER SUBJECT         MARKS STATUS
                1 SCINECE            45 GREEN
                1 ACCOUNTS           15 RED
                1 MATHS              35 YELLOW
                3 SCINECE            45 GREEN
                3 ACCOUNTS           15 RED
                3 MATHS              35 YELLOWWe used the aggregate COUNT function earlier, but aggregate functions require collapsing the results down to one row per group.
    However, most of the aggregate functions, like COUNT, have analytic counterparts, that can give the same results without collapsing the result set. Here's one way to get the results above, using the analytic COUNT function:
    WITH     got_cnt          AS
         SELECT  studentnumber, subject, marks, status
         ,     COUNT ( DISTINCT CASE
                                   WHEN  status  IN ('RED', 'YELLOW', 'GREEN')
                             THEN  status
                               END
                    ) OVER (PARTITION BY  studentnumber)     AS cnt
         FROM    perstatus
    SELECT    studentnumber, subject, marks, status
    FROM       got_cnt
    WHERE       cnt  = 3
    ORDER BY  studentnumber
    ,            status
    ;
