.wmv into FCP back to .wmv - best workflow with Flip4Mac?

Apologies if this has been asked before, can't find a specific answer to this.
My client has provided a .wmv (windows media video 9) source file that needs to be edited.
The client needs the final format to also be .wmv with the WMV9 codec.
I've downloaded and shelled out for Flip4Mac Studio, no problem playing the file in QT or FCP. Now, apart from being able to play, import and export to wmv, I assumed I would be able to also create a .wmv sequence in FCP, but not getting any wmv9 codec in my sequence settings.
Am I missing something? Or if it's not possible to create a wmv9 sequence, what's the best workflow?
Source file is 720x540 @ 25fps, bit rate 2303 kbps, audio is 44.1kHz
Thanks.
(PS Belated Happy Thanksgiving to all my pals over there in the US)

Thanks Jerry - believe me I wouldn't be working with this version if I didn't have to. It's for presentation within Windows Media Player ultimately so it will probably be OK if I can maintain most of the original quality.< </div>
Coming into Quicktime is an issue simply because they're different universes, but you know that.
You know what I'd do? I'd find some yutz with a PC and pay him/her to edit it on some Microsoft product. Instant in, instant out.
Short of that, converting the .wmv to something simple that will work in FCP is not going to give you any appreciable compression hit if it started out so small. Compressing again for .wmv v9.0 isn't going to improve anything but it shouldn't diminish either.

  • Subtitles: FCP or DVDSP? Best workflow and quality?

I have always placed subtitles in FCP. I am now looking at DVDSP instead. This will help I know if I ever need a second language option. But how is the workflow and is the quality good?
For me it seems easier in FCP, because I can make editing decisions while seeing the subtitle. Having to make a locked and final edit and still not have subtitles in place appears more difficult and prone to problems. Anyone find these problems easy to deal with using DVDSP for subtitles?

    Jon Braeley wrote:
I am talking about subtitles not captions
Maybe. the function isn't the issue, it's the delivery method that makes the determination. Are you encoding to Line 21, burning the text over the video, or creating a stream of subtitle data? Most DVD players cannot handle Line 21, that's a function of the television set. All DVD players can access up to 32 subtitle streams. If you're burning the subs into the video, it doesn't matter how you play the video.
My question is that if the delivery is to be DVD, why do some users still create subtitles in FCP instead of DVDSP?
Subtitling in FCP is still a grim chore. Just seems that DVDSP would be the better option, or does FCP offer much better text quality-format options?
There is no option to burn in "subtitles" in DVDSP. DVD subtitles are streams of text and formatting data, not text image files, although sub streams can display graphics. FCP does not have a utility to export text objects as subtitle data streams in STL, SMI, SML, SON, or SCR formats. You cannot import a QT movie into the subtitle tracks.
So, where you create the subtitles is determined by two things: a) your need for flexibility (for changes or to receive data from another source) and b) your need for quality. Subs created and drawn onto the screen by the DVD player will be fairly high quality. Text that is burned into the video will never be any better than the encoder settings you used for the MPEG2.

  • Whats the best workflow with REDCODE Footage?

    Hi,
I Go an work on a Red code project. A Music clip shot on the RED ONE. I Was wondering: what is the best way to work with this 4k footage. There are much shoots in 100 frames who i need to ramp. So a fast editing way would be nice...
    - Do i need to use the reference quick times from the camera?
    - Do i need to trans code al the footage to SD and edit it, then before the compositing relink it to the 4k footage?
What is the best option? This is the first time i work with 4k from the RED ONE.
    THANKS!
    David Douglas

Well, I'd scan this forum here, for one:
    http://www.reduser.net/forum/index.php
#2, don't work with 4K images natively...transcode to another format, like DVCPRO HD or other format and work from those, then conform to 4K when you are done...most likely on another system that can handle them, like SCRATCH.
But that forum is where to look for the answers.

  • What is the best workflow with SVN and Developer Data Modeler.

I am workin on strategy to fullfill next tasks with Data Modeler:
    * Posibility to work on paralel branches for model
    * Merging changes from different branches
    * Generating upgrade scripts for changes (from one commit till other)
    * Maintaining posiblity to fast build empty database for any version of model
    What are your ideas?
Do you use some database for thease operations or you do it only using Modeler?
Does SVN merge works fine with Modeler?
How you work with versioned Modeler and many versions of different development DBs.

    Hello,
We work with SVN and DM too, but do not use branches for DM to prevent merges.
If multiple developers work on the same design, each developer checks out the design. A lock can be used to prevent the update of the same object by multiple developers (if you want).
If you commit changes in SVN, the other developers get informed on these changes by the 'Pending changes'. They can decide whether or not they include those changes.
If you synchronize with the other developer changes, you can create alter or create scripts by importing the target database and generate scripts.
If you want to build a historical version of the model, you check out a version of the design with a specific revision (you can specifiy this during checkout). You build create scripts based for this version.

  • Paid job: convert .stl file into .xml to import into FCP. Anyone?

I need someone to convert my two .stl files (subtitles) exported from DVD SP and convert them into files (.xml?) compatible with Final Cut Pro. I need to Import these files into FCP and burn a Quicktime file with subtitles.
I can pay someone (not millions!) to do this, since I have no clue and anything I was suggested doesn't work.
    Thanks

    Can anyone help me?
I absolutely need to import the subtitles into Final Cut and re-writing all of them manually would take forever.
Please let me know if there is any program I need to use.

  • Is anyone else having issues with importing files into FCP X

Trying to import .mov files from older system into FCP X on a new iMac with Lion OSX.  Anyone else having similar issues?

What kind of files are they?
You may open them in Quicktime Player, and do a "Get Info" on them, and post that information here.
It may be that they use some codec that FCP X can't handle.
If that is the case, use the excellent and free program MPEG Streamclip to save them to Quicktime format using the ProRes codec.

  • OMF back into FCP

Sent an OMF from FCP to audio post house for mixing many moons ago and now need to make amendments.
I have original pictures but need to reimport the audio back to FCP and I only have the OMF available
How can I get the OMF audio back into FCP with all the original edit points on the audio
instead of continuous tracks containing the clips?

    Hi Dave,
thanks for your response. I've tried doing that and haven't had any luck. It's dawned on me that there a probably two good reasons why the audio is identical on left and right channels.
    1. The first is that the J3 I originally diged from had previously been set to centre all audio. The deck was on hire so it's not unlikely. Normally you can toggle between channels on the front J3 panel 'Audio' button - but I now reckon that someone had adjusted the setting within the menu system. This is something I hadn't thought of at the time.
    2. If this isn't the case, the sound recordist may have recorded everything in mono. Soon after I posted the question, the director of the film mentioned that the recordist had mentioned something to this effect but she wasn't absolutely sure.
I'm going to test a couple of the digibeta rushes at work tomorrow and find out.
If the tapes are stereo and I did mis-capture them, then I still have the problem of re-batch diging them from Avid. I'm also now thinking that the best thing to do is splash he cash and just hire a J3 for a day and batch conform through FCP.
Thanks again for your post, any other solutions would be appreciated!

  • Best workflow for image (LOGO) from Illustrator to FCP?

Greetings to all. I am struggling with this -- I want to bring my company logo into FCP 5.1.4, FROM Illustrator to FCP. Easy enough? Not for me.. as I have two issues:
    1. My imported image looks great in the viewer, but jaggies in the Canvas.
I understand that for DV NTSC 48k, my frame size is 720x480 -- but in another post, I read that it is best to export as 720x540, .tif (another person said 720x540 jpeg, because jpeg embeds sRGB proile -- but that will be part of question #2) -- the square pixel vs. 4:3 pixel issue...
My Illustrator image is all vector art, and all fonts are outlined before export. I am saving as high-res (300 dpi). I tried saving as tif, jpeg, pdf. I tried bringing the PDF into photoshop, and saving as a psd. I tried opening pdf. No matter what I tried, the image looked perfect in the viewer, but like doo in the canvas. A tif, file size 720x540, 300dpi looks correct in the viewer, but jaggie in the canvas.
YES, the green "render" bar was visible in the timeline -- of course, that must be the problem -- but then I rendered the still clip, and there was no difference. I made sure the render indicator in the timeline was "dark grey" -- but yet, the imported still image from illustrator looks jaggie and not good enough for production in the canvas.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG HERE?
    2. Color space -- regardless of the jaggies issues, my imported still image from illustrator is all washed out when imported.
Regardless of file type. Yes, file set to RGB. Yes, gamma set to 2.2 (also tried setting imported still gamma to defualt - "source" - no change)
My LCD display (mac book pro C2D 17") is calibrated, using a Spyder2. Gamma is set to 2.2. My print output from illustrator (saved as pdf x-1/a) ALWAYS prints as expected.
If I add a color correction filter, and juice up the saturation, I can try to make the still image look close, but this shouldn't be the case, YES?
My expectation is that a still image in illustrator or photoshop should look the same in FCP.
What kind of newbie error am I making? What am I missing?
Thank in advance for any guidance.
    Jeremy

    Jeremy Roberts wrote:
I have been sending jobs to print (magazine ads, web, general print) for ages, and my printed materials come in as expected -- that is, within a few % points of my display -- which is what we are expecting -- and also EXTREMELY close to proof prints, using a reasonably high-end inkjet printer, with correct paper profiles... that is to say, that although I am no expert in color management by any means, I have what I need so that what I see on screen is very close to what is printed on a local printer, or a million dollar press.
CAN I EXPECT to achieve anything close to this with video?
When you print something on paper, you get to see exactly what it will look like and that's exactly how your customers will see it too. With video, there are infinite variables affecting this such as incorrectly calibrated displays; cheap TV components; the difference between CRTs, LCDs and computer displays; the size / resolution of the display, etc. There are so many variables that it will look different on every screen. All we can do as content producers is calibrate to a common standard, achieved through a properly-calibrated broadcast monitor.
But if your film has a single use in mind, such as a trade show, it is better to ignore the above advice and use the display device it will end up on as the monitoring device, if you can.
I am not near my FCP machine right now, so I can't try the test -- but I will try to revert my display color profile to stock apple LCD, and see what this brings. I know that FCP has simply NOT looked correct to me on my machine.
What do the "big guns" who are using FCP and having to use pre-defined creative print elements, created in AI or Photoshop or whatever -- all color matched for print, what do you guys do when you need to integrate this into FCP?
ARE FCP editors using Apple's 1.8 gamma (I guess you must because FCP uses it regardless of your colorsync profile, per the above article). ???
I set it to Source and have had no problems because I create still images on the same machine with the default gamma of 1.8. I think what happened was you created the images in Photoshop with a colorsync profile of 2.2 on the monitor but perhaps a different profile embedded (if any). When you brought it into FCP, FCP automatically assumed it was created at a gamma of 1.8 and boosted to 2.2 but as the images was not created at 1.8, it was already very bright to begin with and so was boosted x2. That's my theory.

  • Color graded sequence won't export back into fcp as an xml or send to

    Hi,
I've finished a film and graded it. when everything is rendered, I export using either send to or as an xml. Both stop at around 50%. on the xml I get the following report.
I started out at a 20 min sequence then a ten minute sequence now I'm down to 5 minutes. i've got a 146 minute movie to grade and get back into fcp.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Cheers

The order of execution is confusing me.
On your first attempt, you tried sending the entire 146 minute project, graded and rendered it. Correct?
On Send To FCP, the XML failed... (hardly surprising)
This is where I get lost. Are you creating new, shorter versions, grading them and attempting to round trip the short sequences? and... if this is so, how are you differentiating these from the original monster failure? Do you have new render directories, paths, XMLs? Once an XML has been sent, it must not be re-used or re-sent or it will start appearing as ambiguous clones with conflicting path references.
And 146 minutes is too long for any single subject unless it is a remake of Warren Beatty's "Reds" or "Spending a little over two hours on a beach with Jessica Alba" so make it shorter... ;-P This is an undocumented feature of COLOR. No, really!

  • Audio help wanted exporting to QT and back into FCP.

I have a sequence with live sound on A1 and A2, music on A3 and A4 and some extra voice on A5 and A6. I have gone into audio outputs and clicked "6 outputs" and "dual mono" for each and tried checking all the options for "Discrete channels" "Stereo down mix" etc. Whatever happens when I reimport the QT movie into a fcp sequence I get the 6 tracks but the whole mix always ends up of 1 and 2 with the other tracks blank. How can I get all the tracks to carry accross individually all the way?

I've sent a test to the broadcaster using this method. When I reimported the QT file back into FCP it was possible to separate the live sound from the music etc. I'll have to hope it's OK otherwise I'll have to do the odd suggestion of the editor of converting all the audio files to AIFF and re-laying them into the project and then exporting the whole lot as a QT file.

  • Best workflow to place multiple projects into one master project?

Since FCP X seems to slow down with longer projects(this needs to be fixed soon) I am creating 4 15 minute projects for my  hour master. Should I copy and paste the shorter projects into the master or export them as self-contained QT files and re-import?
    Best.

Try copying and pasting into a new project first after rebooting and with nothing else running, not even networking.

  • Best workflow for FCP 7 HVX200 or XHA1?

I know these are older technologies but if you could get a great deal on an Canon XHA1 or HVX200 with 16gb card for roughly the same price (1500 for Canon, 1600 for Panasonic) what would you pull the trigger on?
I need a camera to take on the road to do some simple interviews for a documentary. The more complicated shoots will be done by my DP and his much better equipment.
But when I figure rental fees, convenience, and the likelihood I may need it to do some more simple projects by my lonesome in the future it could be a good investment if the price is right.
Both cameras are being sold from (seemingly) reputable industry professionals who are upgrading their own inventory and have given histories of the respective cameras uses, environments, hours, and any repairs.
My top priority is picture quality and workflow with FCP7. I know Canon has the better chips but is tape. How are the P2 cards with FCP7? What's the best bang for buck picture-wise? Of course other features will be taken into consideration. It's been a while since I shot on my own so I am a little out of touch with technology. Thanks for any insights!
    Thanks,
    BJ
    www.bjbarretta.com

Both are very good cameras. The Panasonic uses P2 cards and the work flow on that (DVCPRO) and the HDV of the Canon are both supported in FCP7. The P2 is ingressed via Log and Transfer using the builtin P2 plugin which can easily be set for ProRes 422. The Canon uses basic firewire and log and capture. They both have 4 pin firewire connection and of the two the Canon is more renowned for being fidly and hard to connect. That said There are lots of XHA1 out there (I have an XHA1S no issues). Picture quality is fantastic on both and you pays your money ... your question was workflow's .. ingest the captured product either DVDPRO or HDV to ProRes and away you go..

  • Best format for importing scanned photos into FCP in HDV?

    Hi,
I'm importing a lot of scanned photos into FCP, for an HDV project. I will be zooming into these images, panning, and so on.
What is the consensus on the best format to use? I was thinking TIFF but then reading about PNG I am thinking this is perhaps better.
I am dealing with large (up to 1200 dpi) image files, so size is an issue.
    Many thanks for your thoughts.

Right, use a PSD with photos on different layers, Import the one document into FCP, each photo is on a different layer in FCP and you can zoom in as you wish by using key frames, once you set all your photos (Layers) the way you want all the same or different etc... you copy and paste them into the time line. I do this all the time and add transitions or effects. works well even with company logos off of a web site. You can zoom in all you want. dude
    from a link you provided
    PSD
Increasingly then image editability is becoming important. The obvious way of maintaining maximum information and maximum editability is to stick with the native application-specific format. Of course it was to avoid this go-it-alone anarchy that file format standards had to be developed in the first place, but the situation with bitmap images is quite special. Currently the vast majority of designers are working on their images in Photoshop and then exporting them to TIFF to use in their DTP application. Why not just cut out the middleman and support the industry standard Photoshop’s PSD format directly?
After all the format is well known. The core format PSD 3.0 format is built on a short header specifying the image size and colour channels and then three information sections called the Colour Mode Data Block, Image Resources Block and Layer and Mask Information Block defining features such as duotone settings, channels and paths and layer opacity and blend mode respectively. After that comes the image data. Naturally the PSD format can support all the advanced features we’ve already looked at such as duotones, clipping paths and channels but it also offers one feature that no other file format does. While every other format must be flattened on export, PSD is the only format that supports layers. Any program that supports PSDs directly can then leverage this layer information as Adobe ImageReady and Deneba Canvas show. Currently the DTP support is fairly basic but the possibility of changing image blend modes or editing layer text or tweaking adjustment layers depending on the actual spread in which the image appears is creatively mouthwatering.

  • PROBLEM SOLVED "export clips from Color back into FCP & add transition"

If I have two clips that you cannot place a transition in between here is the only thing that worked for me.
I discovered this problem after I exported my movie clips from FCP 6 to Color and imported the color corrected files from Color back into FCP 6. I could no longer add transitions to any of my clips unless I made the following changes.
    1. 1st check to see if the video clip has an audio track underneath it. If they are not linked Select the audio and the video track to be linked, hit Command "L" and you will see an underline under the audio and video name to show that they are now linked. Do the same for the adjoining video and audio track.
    2. Next select all of the clips after the video clip you just selected by typing "tttt" this changes to the "Select All Tracks Forward Tool". Click on the track after the video track you just linked and it will select all of the tracks thereafter. Hit the "A" button to change back to the selection tool and move all of the selected tracks away from the previous video/audio track.
    3. Next type "RR" this will change to the "Ripple" tool. Now click on end of the video track on the previous video clip and type -15 (for negative 15 frames). Then click on the beginning of other video clip to the right that you linked and type +15 (for plus 15 frames).
    4. Type "tttt" to change back to the "Select All Tracks Forward Tool" the hit the "A" button to change back to the selection tool and drag all tracks back together again.
    5. You may then drag and drop your transition in between both video clips.
I hope this helps someone...this is the only thing that worked for me!!!
    Number1talent

I am working with mostly DVCPro ftg, with a few clips in MiniDV.  I did have roughly 10 clips with speed changes, but they exported fine two weeks ago, when I did this the first time.  (Actually, it didn't keep the speed changes, but it did export with media to FCP).
The clips do have reel numbers and seem to be of the right length per clip but there's just no picture and no assoicated media with which to relink the clip.
    I'm on Color 1.5.3
Any possible ideas?  Thank you for your help...
