Wonky port, won't charge.  What do I do?

I have gone through 4 car charges and was relying on wall chargers to keep my phone charged while at work on the road.  Now even my wall chargers are not working.  The port seems to be loose and doesn't allow for the male end of the charger to make a good seat in the port.  I've tried everything and to no avail.  What gives Verizon?

Keeping your phone charged is very important to us Hoderbaby13. I'm sorry to hear you are having so many issues with the charging port. The port and the actual charger can be sensitive if used with force. I have also had to replace my charge before so I understand. If the port is loose, it may look as if its damaged and eventually the phone will need to be replaced. Every new phone comes with a 1yr manufactures warranty, which covers defects not caused by damage. YOu can take the phone to a corporate store to be evaluated and if your still under warranty and there is no damage, it can be replaced. If you know it is damaged or they can see damage, you will have to replace it through insurance, if you have it or by purchasing a new phone. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. • My I phone won't charge, what might be wrong??

Phone won't charge, what could be wrong, is less than a year old!

If the iPhone won't charge when connected to the power adaptor or when connected to your computer, the cable may be bad.

  • IPhone USB port - Won't Charge

Today, I visited the apple store in Boulder, CO. to troubleshot my 1st generation iPhone's charging problem. I purchased it new from an apple store in September 2007, and I haven't had any problems until this weekend. Nothing happens when it's connected to the USB charging cable. I tried to connect it to my computer and the USB wall mount adapter, nothing happens. I even tried different cables, and still, nothing happens. It won't charge and it won't connect to the computer, but everything else works fine. It's fully functional except that it's running low on battery power. Earlier today, with nothing plugged into it, a message randomly appeared that said, "this accessory isn't supported by iPhone. Would you like to enable airplane mode?"
At the genius bar, I was informed that the port on the phone wasn't functioning properly, and the only way they were able to charge it, was through a firewire cable. No USB cables were able to connect. 3rd party firewire cables are available, but they don't allow the iPhone to sync with a computer. The phone has been carefully handled it's entire life, and has no signs of damage. This port just quit working. It's definitely defective, not damaged. I was informed that my warranty expired 3 months ago, and I could pay $190 to repair the port, or pay $9 more, FULL PRICE for a new iPhone 3G.
This doesn't sound reasonable to me. If this problem occurred 3 months ago, it would have been repaired or replaced under warranty, no questions asked. But, because it happened 3 months later, it's not covered. I didn't purchase the additional AppleCare plan, because I'm careful with phones, and have never had a catastrophic problem with one before in my life... not to mention, I haven't had any other problems with this phone in the past. There was no reason to believe that it would suddenly fail, due to a hardware malfunction, 3 months after the 1 year warranty expired.
The genius bar employee was very helpful and courteous, but there wasn't anything he could possibly do to help me with a warranty claim. He was able to charge the phone up for me, and referred a 3rd party, mac repair shop, that possibly had more cost effective repair options. I went to the mac repair shop, and was told the entire motherboard would have to be replaced on the phone to charge and connect my phone to iTunes with a USB cable, again. I was told it wouldn't be worth trying to fix. They were able to order a firewire cable for me to temporarily charge my phone, but It's still impossible to ever sync with my computer again.
I called Apple's service and support line to see why Apple couldn’t cover this type of repair. I was finally connected to the support agent, *******. I explained the problem to her, and she gave me the same response as the apple store employees, "you can repair the phone for $190 or get a new one for $199. If this happened 3 months ago, it would have been covered under warranty, or if you purchased the AppleCare plan for it, it would have been covered, too."
Why is it so unreasonable to ask for an exception to be made to the warranty in this case? The rude, cold shouldered response I received from *******, wasn't inline with Apple's brand image of simplicity and service. I work in advertising, surrounded by Apple's core consumers, and have the power to influence my colleagues (your consumers) through word of mouth. We're the early adopters of your newest products and Apple Brand loyalists, but experiences like this one, can tip the scales very quickly...
Why does the quality of your service depend so much on a purchase date? This product barely survived past the halfway point of it’s two year service contract, before it just failed. It wasn’t subjected to abuse, only normal wear and tear. The screen still looks like new and is as clear as the day I bought it, but the partial failure of this simple plug, has rendered the product useless.
There has to be a more reasonable solution to this problem. Please Help.

FYI - this is a user to user help forum only, so you aren't addressing anything to Apple here, and fellow users won't be able to change this for you.
This is unfortunate, but the same applies with the warranty on any product. The warranty begins on the purchase date with every product that I've purchased. It isn't unreasonable to ask for an exception and more than likely exceptions have been made depending on the situation, but if Apple made an exception for you in this situation, where is the line drawn for someone else? If an exception is made 3 months after the warranty expires, what is wrong with making an exception 6 months or a year after the warranty expires? Apple provides a one year warranty on the iPhone with the option to purchase the AppleCare extended warranty anytime prior to the one year purchase anniversary date, which extends the standard one year warranty by an additional year.
I've been a portable computer user since 2000 or so, and I usually purchase the AppleCare extended warranty for my Mac purchase, waiting until the just before the standard warranty period expires - since a portable is subject to more compared to a desktop. I plan on purchasing the AppleCare extended warranty for my iPhone 3G within a month before the one year purchase anniversary date. Something can go wrong 3 months after the AppleCare extended warranty expires or two years after the purchase date which would be covered under the warranty, but at that time I'll be out of luck since the warranty coverage will have expired, and the same for any product I purchase which has a limited warranty period.

  • IPad battery drained overnight; now it won't charge; what do I do?

My iPad (first issue) drained overnight and now it won't charge. Totally dead.
    What shall I do?

    Hello Christie,
With it still plugged in, try a hard reset to see if that helps.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  This may or may not work the first time around, so be sure to try this at least a couple of times.

  • My MacBook Air won't charge, what can I do?

My MacBook Air won't charge up at home. Today I brought it to the Apple Store, and it worked OK there. What could be the cause? In the Apple Store, we even used my charger, and it worked. At home now, the green or orange light doesn't come on and the computer loses the little charge it has (4% right now). Very frustrating.

    Hi Lisa,
My macbook air has the same issue.
I get no light on the power adaptor (45W) and no charge appearing on the onscreen icon.
This issue seems to happen intermittently and after being fine for the last few months it started again today.
After trawling through a lot of forums I tried a piece of advice which did work and my macbook is now charging.
The advice was to simply heat up the charger a few degrees, which I did by putting a warm fan blower on it. My charger started working within a few minutes.
    Hope this may help,
    Craig

  • My iPad won't charge what is wrong?

My iPad does not charge what is wrong ?

Are you using the charger that came with the iPad? And do you have that plugged into a known good wall outlet?
If yes then there are very few things that can be wrong.
    1. Bad cable. Try a different cable.
    2. No power to the outlet.
    3. Bad charger. Try a different charger.
    4. Charging port has lint or dirt in it. Check and carefully clean if necessary.
    5. Software failure. First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
    6. Hardware failure. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

I get a green flashing light but it won't charge, what seems to be the problem? I have only had it since April so can't see it being the mac is it the charger itself? Please help!
