Word 2010 - Backspace Selects & Deletes Everything

Hello.
So, the problem I am having is only happening in Word right now. I am not sure what I did, but I did something. If I am at the end of a sentence or anything and I hit the backspace key, it selects everything before the cursor and deletes it (it isn't happening
ever single time, but it's enough to say that it is extremely annoying). Yes, I do have to hit backspace two times (once to select, and another to delete), so for certain things that I am fixing using backspace, it get really annoying.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thanks.

Hi,
Have you check on another computer, see if this is still happening? Under what circumstance the issue will be happenning? Do you mind share me a copy of document which causing this issue to:

  • Using backspace in text box deletes everything except current word.

When I press the backspace button twice it deletes everything in the box except the current word I am on.

This happens only in Firefox on both my Samsung Galaxy Nexus running 4.1.1 and my Nexus 7 which I think is also running 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. I am using the stock keyboard on both devices.

How do I easily select a group of emails in Apple Mail if I want to delete them? In other words, what do I select if I mark the first and last email to delete everything in between? Thanks.

I have this same issue. I have over 100 email addresses that I need to add to a group. The issue is not making the group, it's getting the email addresses from Mail to Contacts.
Dragging the email addresses does nothing. You can copy the addresses, but there's nowhere to put them. You can make a VCF for an email address, but then you have to find all of them to add them to the group. How do you automate this?!
I'm astounded that there's so little support for such a common issue for which people have been asking for years.

  • The "portable document format" icon is a Word 2010 icon, so selecting Adobe Reader as action does not work to display the PDF.

In the Applications tab -- Content Type -- the "portable document format" icon is a Word 2010 icon (not Adobe), so selecting Adobe Reader or preview in Firefox as action does not work to display the PDF. I can see this Applications difference because my other Firefox laptop has the Adobe icon, and I can view PDFs. Essentially, a PDF is coming in as a Word document -- and the computer tries to open it up as a Word file.
How do I get the correct PDF icon in the Applications list -- the same way it displays (and works) on my other laptop.

Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 10.1.7 ?
I think you need to add this to the list of applications and the action to take on the type of content. This can also be managed in the about:permissions page. [[Permissions Manager - Give certain websites the ability to store passwords, set cookies and more]]

  • Excel 2010 temp Files do not delete on network share automatically when closed *Word 2010 do!*

    Hi,
saw this post in similar Versions but never with a "cool solution" :)
We got NetApp 2050 as Filer in a Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain with Windows 7 Clients and Office 2010 Pro Plus, all up to date with WSUS.
If I open an Excel 2010 sheet on the Netapp Share or a Share on the Domain Controller and close it, it do not delte the temp file.
    Same to PowerPoint 2010.
But with Word 2010, this works!
Therefor I don't think, this will be the NTFS permissions or Network issues.
We also got VMware Clients with Windows 7 and Office 2010. There the issue does not occure!!!
May be something in Group Policies? Could it be some Microsoft Updates?
I'm very interested in your opinions...
    Best regards...

    Hi,
As far as I know, the issue usually caused by the anti-virus actively scanning Excel files (XLS, XLSX, or XLSM files). Please try to make the anti-virus to not actively scan Excel files.
Then, if you are using Kaspersky 2009, I recommend we try the below method:
Go to Run>Regedit>Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\KLIF\Parameters>Create the key  NonCachedIo (Type: Dword Value:1)
Next, some other customer solved the issue by turning off the index with the effected folders.
    Hope it's helpful.

  • Word 2010 freezes when opening a file from a share drive

    Issue:
In our office, one user who is opening up a document from a share folder will experience Microsoft word freezing.
It doesn't display a not responding message
It doesn't lock up and close out automatically
It doesn't show any behavior typical of an issue, however doesn't allow any user input.
Can not type, select anything on menu bar, can not minimize, or close out without using task manager.
You can move the mouse around, however it appears to be frozen.
Everything else works, and nothing shows up in event viewer.
    Issue is intermittent
I have been able to duplicate it with different documents, multiple times, and the only variable I can determine is that the files open in Compatibility mode.
    For troubleshooting currently I've:
    Repaired Office
Deleted the Word Data Registry Key
Deleted the Word Options Registry Key
    Deleted the Normal.dot file
    Restarted the Computer
    Disabled Add-ons
Not sure what I am overlooking and appreciate any help and support.
    Some additional information:
    Office 2010 32-bit
    Windows 7 32-bit

    Hi,
How long does Word 2010 “freeze”? I guess it may cost too much time when you open Word 2010 in a shared folder, so that you think it “freeze”. Please wait for a few more minutes to check if Word 2010 can respond. Maybe it just delay of
    response.
    A similar case is here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ba5114e0-98dd-4b44-a078-373df8899048/word-2007-issue-slow-opening-files?forum=word
    http://withinwindows.com/2008/08/31/taming-microsoft-word-2007s-file-associations-and-document-windows-part-one/
Then you can download this file to local disk and open it again. Able to launch Word 2010 quickly, there may exist anything wrong in communication with this shared folder. You may change path of shared folder. If it doesn’t work, we can
    try to disable SMBv2.

  • Acrobat X Pro - Word 2010 to pdf files

I just bought AcrobatX to create high quality pdf files from Word2010 files in WIndows 7.
Unfortunately when I do create them from inside Word using the Acrobat tab, the program crashes!
However, if I print the same files using  the  Adobe printer, the pdf files are generated. I do not know, however, if the output quality is the same (I select the "press quality" job option).
Could anyone please clarify this issue? I did buy this software just to obtain pdf files with the highest quality possible (press quality) but it seems it is not what I got.
    Thanks
    Edmundo

    Hi,
Thanks again! I have just done what you suggested - no way! Even with everything off, it crahes!
I will follow your advise  of printing using the Acrobat printer. Yet I face now a new problem!! Some of the figures doesnot show up at all!
    >>>you could post it here for us to take a look
Please download an example of a Word (2010) file that crashes from here:
    https://www.yousendit.com/download/cEd0ckhhV3JCSnBFQlE9PQ
In the zip it is also a pdf created by using the Adobe printer. Please take a look at Fig-4-2. It is of bad quality! Any suggestions to improve it? I got just a few (out o a few hundreds)  that bad!.
I insert figures (made by CorelDraw and exported as WMF) in Word as Insert, Pictures.

  • Graphic issues in Word 2010 and 2013

The problem is it reformats your original image to fall within this shape below. Everything within that triangle is white and your original image only shows through the remaining part of the oval. I have attached a Word document with a few examples. It cuts
off part of the logo, signatures, etc.
So far, we have found this occurring in 2 situations:
    1. .docx is generated in third party application. We open this in Word 2003 and save as .doc. Then if that .doc is then opened by someone else using Word 2010 or 2013, it has this issue.
    2. The other situation was just a .doc created (outside of the third party application) that is used as a VBA component. If they open that .doc in Word 2013 it has this issue but other .doc files are fine.
One other note, we can open these files in Word 2003 and 2007 and the images look fine. It only happens when opening in Word 2010 or 2013.
Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions? I have tested both .tif & .jpg to see if the original image format made a difference and it doesn’t appear to. Unfortunately, it’s impacting tens of thousands of Word docs stored in archive.
I don't see where I could upload a file, but I do have example documents.
    Thanks,
    Dawn

    Hi Dawn:
After testing from myside, I found if you
change the picture format, it will fix the display issue. You can
manually changing the format of the Graphic: select the graphic->select format tab on the Ribbon->change to any format you want. You can also
use VBA code to change the format of the picture, for detailed information you can refer to
    This article.
Below are some findings for your reference.
I checked the documents you sent to me, as the issue occurred when if the file saved as .docx or opened with word 2010/2013, so I zipped the file and compared the xml files, I found something
might be the cause of this issue.
The pictures in media folder were all fine no missing parts even for those ones displayed wrongly in Word.
I compared the document.xml file under ….\Graphic issue\Issue.docx\word(where I stored the zip file), I found the documents.xml of issue.docx file has section called <a:custGeom>………
</a:custGeom>, which contains data like below,  maybe it’s inherited from the design tool, somehow, change formatting can get rid of the custGeom. So we suggest you change the format of
    the picture.

  • Default file destination in Microsoft Word 2010 Mail Merge to PDF

I'm using windows 2010, and Adobe Acrobat X Standard.
I have a mail merge template that I created in Microsoft Word 2010 that I use to send out multiple price quotes to customers who are bidding jobs.  When I merge to Adobe PDF everything works properly (everyone receives their unique PDF, etc.), but every time I do this Adobe requires that I select a destination folder for it to send the PDF's it generates that get attatched to the emails.
When I save a Word Doc as a PDF it automatically saves it in the same folder at the word document it was created from.  Is there a way I can set up my 'Merge to Adobe PDF' feature to do the same thing when it generates the merged PDF files?  It's just a hastle to map the entire file path of the desination folder every time I send out a quote.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Adding a merge field to an email hyperlink in a word 2010 email mailmerge

I am using word 2010, excel 2010, and outlook 2010 to send out the following email with email mailmerge to 50 + people.
The highlighted names in the greeting are two merge fields - First_Name and Last_Name.
The hyperlink is an email hyperlink to the following email message:
Will you attend?   ___ Yes   ___  No
    The hyperlink is as follows:
I would like to place the merge First_Name Last_Name in the hyperlink to sign the RSVP email back to me. I have tried many modifications of the hyperlink code and nothing works consistently. It will place one name as the signer but will not pick up
the following names the merge fields.
I would like the final email hyperlink to look like this:
Will you attend?   ___ Yes   ___  No
    Jody Smith
Can anyone tell me how to add the First_Name Last_Name to the hyperlink email so that each ricipient's name from the original email will appear in the hyperlink email as shown
    above?
    Thanks!

    Hi All,
To help other community members who may have similar problem, I quote Peter Jamieson's answer here:
    (Edited a little...)
I can get this to work here, but there are some things you need to pay attention to when merging to HTML email (rather than to new documents etc.).
The Hyperlink field code I start with is as follows:
    { HYPERLINK }
Insert that using ctrl-F9 to insert the special field brace pair { }, insert the Word HYPERLINK, then select the field and update it using F9.
View the field code results (press Alt-F9 if necessary). In the English language version of Word you should see
    Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.
    Important point number 1:
Do not update the result of this HYPERLINK field again (i.e. don't select it and press F9). If you do, every email will always show the same link text. As
far as I can remember, this behaviour is different when you merge to a document rather than email, or perhaps merge to attachments. This can be a problem if you need to update other fields in your email, or if the email is being used by other people who might
(for whatever reason) update the HYPERLINK field
    Now modify the display text.
Use the Arrow keys to move the insertion point so it is between the "E" and the "r" in the Word "Error", and type
Then you can select and delete the "E", and the "rror! Hyperlink reference not valid."
Select the text and apply the Hyperlink style to it (Home tab of the Ribbon->Styles).
When you toggle field code display using alt-F9, you should see the original field
    { HYPERLINK }
Now click after the K of HYPERLINK and insert the following fields and text (or copy them from somewhere else):
     "{ SET x 1 }mailto:*** Email address is removed for privacy ***?subject=July%20Wine%20and%20Spine%20&body=%20Will%20you%20attend?%20%20%20___%20Yes%20%20%20___%20No%0A%20%0a%2{
    MERGEFIELD First_Name%20{MERGEFIELD Last_Name }"
so that your field now looks like
    { HYPERLINK "{ SET x 1 }mailto:*** Email address is removed for privacy ***?subject=July%20Wine%20and%20Spine%20&body=%20Will%20you%20attend?%20%20%20___%20Yes%20%20%20___%20No%0A%20%0a%2{
    MERGEFIELD First_Name%20{MERGEFIELD Last_Name }" }
As usual, all the {} need to be the special field code brace pairs that you can enter using ctrl-F9 on WIndows Word.
At this point, experienced field users will have to resist the temptation to select the fields and update them. Dont do it!
    Save the document.
Test the email merge. At this point, I would hope to see the results you want.
If not, I do not know why this works OK on my system but not yours.
Important point number 2 You may be wondering why
there is a { SET x 1 } field inside the HYPERLINK code. It's because when you are working with a .docx, if you save, close and reopen your document, you may find that Word has resolved all the merge fields nested inside your HYPERLINK field (i.e. replaced
the field codes by their results). This behaviour can appear arbitrary, and the reason that (for some reason), Word does not resolve the nested fields if there is a Word bookmark inside the HYPERLINK field. Now if the insertion point or selection ws inside
the HYPERLINK field when you save/close the document, there will be a bookmark in there, because Word inserts a bookmark called _GoBack, which enables the user to go back to the previous selection. But if you click outside the HYPERLINK field before you save,
there wil be no such bookmark and Word will resolve your field codes. So we put the { SET x 1 } in there to ensure that there is a bookmark (in this case, called X) to prevent that from happening.
Alternatively, if you save as .doc format (not recommended these days if you can avoid it) Word does not resolve these fields and you don't need the { SET } field.
And that's it. Whether that will be enough for your Merge to work as you hope, I cannot be sure, but all I can say is that without doing those 2 things, it almost certainly
    won't.
[[I originally had a third thing. I actually now think it's incorrect, but I'm going to leave it here just in case.
Important point number 3: If it does not work, there is
at least one other thing that could be wrong, although I think it is highly unlikely. There is a Windows registry setting called FieldCalcSecurityLevel, which was introduced about 12 years ago when Microsoft made some security-related changes to the behaviour
of certain types of field. I'm not going to step through how to look for that, but for example, in my registry, for Word 2010, it is at
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Options
    It may be elsewhere.
If you cannot find that Option, or it is there and is set to the default value (1), then something else is wrong and I do not know what it is. However, if it is set to 0 (which
makes Word use its original behaviour, you will have to set it to 1 to get this to work.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • When I save a Word 2010 doc as a pdf file, it opens up in Adobe Reader as a blank page, no text, no background etc.

When I save a Word 2010 doc as a pdf file, it opens up in Adobe Reader as a blank page, no text, no background etc.  I am logged on as the Administrator, running Windows 7, using Microsoft Home and Business 2010.

You were right, it was a Microsoft problem.
I got it...I am now able to save a Word 2010 document as a pdf file.  Here is what I did/found:
In Word, go to File, Options, Display and make sure that "Print drawing created in word" is CHECKED.
Mine was unchecked and when I checked it everything came back and is working as it did before.  The only thing I can think of is that a Microsoft Update may have changed this selection...I know I DID NOT make any changes in the options.
One other thing I noticed in my saved documents folders was that a lot of my files showed up as PDF's and would still not open until I selected one and told it to default to open as a word document and then they all changed back and I was able to open them in word again.
I hope this helps others out there.

  • Unable to re-enable a Word 2010 addin

I'm building an Addin via VSTO for Word 2010.  I got an error message indicating that my addin had a serious error and if I'd like to disable it. Errantly, I clicked "Yes".  Now, I cannot re-enable it no matter what I do.
Here are all the things I've done:
    File->Options->Add-Ins
From here, I can see my Add-in in the "Disabled Application Add-ins" section. I click the Add-in then below, the DDLB shows "COM Add-ins". I click "Go"
In the Popup titled "COM Add-Ins", I see my add in in the list, with the checkbox unchecked. I check the checkbox and click "OK".
Close word. Re-open word. Addin is still disabled.
If I don't close word and go right back in to the "COM Add-Ins" popup, it also shows that it's not enabled.
I've tried going through the registry and removing all references to the Add-in. I've tried doing a solution clean. I've tried deleting my normal.dotm files.
In all instances, the Word Addin disappears from the Add-Ins list. However, as soon as I rebuild my solution and run, the addin comes back (as expected), but it's still Disabled.
The addin itself isn't throwing any sort of exception to cause it to be soft-disabled. It's just not loading up. I must be missing something somewhere.
Any ideas? This is driving me crazy. I've spent hours on it.

    Hi,
Do you have Add-Ins tab enabled?
If no, open word 2010 > ‘File’ > ‘Options’ > ‘Customize Ribbon’ > check the check box for ‘Add-ins’ under
    ‘Main Tabs’ and click ‘Ok’.
    Try this:
    1. In Word 2010
    2. Click on 'Help', at the bottom of the menu click on 'About Microsoft Office Word'.
    3. Then click on the Disabled Items button.
    4. Select the Disabled Item and re-enable.
    Hope this helps

I just purchased a MacBook Pro off of someone. They left a lot of their information on it, email, photos and all that. Is there an easy way to just delete everything on it and start fresh?

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • Word 2010 to PDF hyperlink opens browser for local file...

Recently upgraded to Office 2010.  I used the Save As .pdf option in Word 2010 for a file that contains a hyperlink to a local pdf file. When I open the saved pdf file with Acrobat Reader and click on the link, my default browser starts up to display the local file. I have tried using different versions of Acrobat Reader, different operating systems, and all kinds of options, but can't figure out why this is happening. I think it's a bug in Word 2010, but can't find any information about this on the web.
    Does anyone have any clues?

OK, replying to my own post, I did just find a Workaround
that's only a few extra steps.....
After all edits and changes were completed in the Word file, I printed to PDF from Word,
creating a Rev A file. Once that was done and a new pdf was created, I opened the
Original File and selected "Combine" from the "File" pull down menu.
With both of the files in the same PDF document, I deleted all the pages from the
Original file. Page one of the Rev A file is now p. 1 of the "combined" file,
and all the PDF bookmarks (still there from the Original File) line up in the right
sequence. The bookmarks (produced by "Saving to PDF" with Headings 1 and 2,
when the original PDF was made) need to be re-linked to the pages in the Rev A
file, but that's quicker than starting from scratch.
Not really very elegant, but it worked. I'd be curious to know what's wrong with the
PDF files saved with bookmarks in WORD, because that happens EVERY time.
I have Acrobat Pro Extended, iteration 9.5.1
