Word 2011 suddenly disappeared file

I was finishing up my 5 page word document that i was supposed to complete for tommorow, then i realised i hadn't save yet, so i pressed command+S, and you know what happened? My document that i was still working on suddenly dissapeared, and i could not track where it is, so i assume it is lost. Can anyone help?

Try a Spotlight search maybe that might find it and give you the path

  • Word 2011 Toolbar disappeared after upgrading to Mountain Lion

Having searched this this forum for help on this problem, I did not find the answer that finally solved this problem for me. So here is the answer in case anyone else is looking. Note that you have to do this for each user account set up on the Mac.
If having issues with viewing your standard toolbar this is usually caused by corruption in your preferences. To reset your preferences to resolve your issue.
Steps to remove the Normal template:
    1. Click on the Apple
    2. Click Force quit
    3. Quit all running programs except for Finder
    4. Click on Go (in the menu bar)
    5. Click Home/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates
    6. Drag Normal.dotm to the trash
Steps to remove Word 2011 preferences:
    1. Click on the Apple-Force Quit
    2. Quit everything except Finder
    3. Click on Go (in the menu bar)
    4. Click Home/Library/Preferences
    5. Drag com.Microsoft.Word.plist to the trash
    6. Drag the Microsoft folder to the trash
    7. Empty the trash
    8. Open Word to a blank document
    9. Test your toolbar

I was having the same problem after I completely tore down my Macbook Pro mid-2010 in order to replace the keyboard.  (Phew!)  After re-asssembling, everything was working again except for the screen brightness buttons (F1,F2).  I figured it was a bad keyboard, but after zapping the p-ram, the brightness buttons now work as they should.  Thanks for the tip!

  • .docx file received from a Windows user isn't displaying scientific writing in Word 2011 in OS X 10.6.8 - font or plugin problem?

I've tried searching everywhere and found similar issues, but nothing exactly this. I'm trying to format a document which was created in a Windows version of Word (unsure which year). However, the document has some scientific writing and minor equations (I assume), and they're just displaying as blank boxes, as if the font isn't installed. It says they should be in Cambria Math.
In Word 2011, Cambria and Calibri aren't displaying as installed fonts and they're listed as "heading fonts" separately in the drop-down, although they do show as all good in FontBook, and when I change to that font in the document, it does change to look like it's Cambria/Calibri. Highlighting and changing the font just changes it to code (ie: "PriBC", or "Cij", not a symbol) but it still says that it's "Cambria Math" after the change.
After some research I tried installing a trial of MathType in case that helped them display. When I highlight the symbols in Word, the MathType plugin pops up to deal with it, but I still can't get it to change to equations - either they disappear completely if I click to convert it to professional display, or they turn into codes like the one mentioned above under letter display. Admittedly, I don't have experience with this, so I'm wondering if there's something I should be requesting of the other person, some extra bundle of information to save in with the Word file?
There has also been one pop-up once that said that I didn't have Cambria installed on my system, which doesn't seem right, either.
On the plus side, my font collection is tidier than it's ever been. But on the downside, I still can't figure this out! Either, do you have suggestions how I can fix it from my end, or what details or steps I should specifically ask of the other person? (They're not particularly computer-literate, which is part of the problem.)
    Thanks in advance.

Update: I upgraded to Mavericks today (10.9.1) and since then, problem solved! Don't know why that was the magic fix, but it was.

  • Problems opening word files with Word 2011 from a Windows 2012 server volume

Here is what we are seeing. Open any Word document on our server with Word 2011 (mac) results in an excruciating delay. Even a  simple one page document will take over a minute to open up. The same document opened from the desktop of the mac opens in
    2 seconds.
In troubleshooting this I turned on invisibles for my mac and watched the folder on the server where the file resides. Here is what I noticed.
    1. If I open that file from a windows computer there is an invisible temp file created for the file that disappears when I close the document. The file opens on the Windows 7 machine with Office 2010 very quickly (2 seconds)
    2. If I open the file from my mac with the preview of Word 2016 the same temp file is created and the file opens very quickly. (2 seconds).
    3. If I open the file from my mac with Word 2011 it takes over a minute and I don't get a temp file on the server. Closing the document takes just as long.
So, what I am guessing is that Word 2011 is trying to create the temp file, tries for a minute, and finally gives up and opens the file anyway. When I close the file I am guessing it is looking for that temp file and finally gives up after a minute and closes
    the file anyway.
Any insights as to what is going on would be appreciated. Our users are very frustrated with this situations.

    Hi,
Since the issue only occurs to Word for Mac, I'm not familiar with the mechanism how it opens a file, we mainly supports Office for Windows in this forum. Please post the question in Office for Mac forum for further assistance:

  • Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files  I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and cr

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • Are there any workarounds for multiple PDF files created for a single Word 2011 document?

    I am running...
    Mac OS X Version 10.6.8
    Word for Mac 2011
    Adobe Acrobat X Version 10.1.0
I am working with 100 plus page Word documents that go back and forth between portrait and landscape layouts. When I attempt to create an Acrobat PDF document (or one using the native Mac PDF function), I end up with 10 to 15 separate PDF documents. One person suggested that I simple stitch them together, which is an inordinate amount of work as compared to how simple it is do on my PC with older versions of Acrobat and Word. However, I have noticed that the margins are way off and the pagination is off sometimes too. So even this workaround is not the answer. I last talked to Microsoft, Apple, and Acrobat tech support about five weeks ago. Each blaming the other two but saying they were working together to solve the problem. My recent searches of forums has not revealed any solutions nor have updates changed anything.
As I am anticipating the day when my old PC stops working, I am searching for a possible workaround or other solution for this problem.

    Thanks for your reply.
The tip-off may be this.  In Word 2007 on my pc when I print the document to a printer, Word generates 1 print file for the entire document. If I print to PDF, one print file is generated by Word and Acrobat creates a PDF from this file.
What I just discovered by accident was that when Word for Mac 2011 prints the same Word document to a printer it creates about 10 different print files.  So instead of a 100 page PDF document I end up with 10 PDF documents of 1 to 30 pages depending where the page orientation shifts in the Word document. If you print to a printer that is not turned on, you can see all of the files stacked up in the printer queue. I suspect that Word for Mac 2011 generates 10 different print files during the PDF creation process and therefore Acrobat logically creates 10 different PDFs.  Unfortunately, there are margin errors and other layout errors in these 10 different PDFs so stitching them together is useless.
I am beginning to think that the way Word for Mac 2011 prints documents is simply incompatabile to Acrobat or the PDF creator that is native to the Mac OS.
I just think that this is a problem that Microsoft is going to have to fix.

  • Photoshop CS6 files into Word 2011?

When I import a photo file from CS6 for MAC, 1x2" at 300 ppi, into Word 2011 for MAC on my new MacBook Pro, the file is importing to fill the page width. When I import a similar file from my old CS2 on the same new computer, the file imports at the correct 1x2" size. I think there is some setting I need to change in CS6, but have been through every place I can find to look. What can I do to fix this?

Don't have retina display. Just realized images are importing to Word 2011 sized at 72 ppi rather than the 300 of original file. That is why size is coming out so large. There must be somewhere in CS6 that is doing this. Apparently, in CS5.5, there is a place to change this under Photoshop>options>, but this choice does not show up in CS6, and I can't find anything similar under Preferences. Any ideas?

  • Word 2011 for Mac Book pro - I have found that my cursor disappears sometimes when I click on a toolbar function. I found out it is a bug, that the Mac loses 'focus'. I can correct it temporarily by clicking on Format - Font - Cancel. Any info?

I have Word 2011 on a Mac Book Pro and have had problems with a dissapearing cursor - it makes editing tricky
After googling it I found out that there is a bug where the Mac loses focus if you click away from the document - it also does this with italics according to other users.
I had a play with it and found out that when I click on the toolbar in a document where this happens, the cursor disappears, e.g. changing font colour etc. And then, when I click on Format - Font - Cancel it returns
I'd be interested if anyone else has a comment to add, please do
    thanks

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) Every time you close a document, it is updated on the Dropbox servers (encrypted), if it is in the Dropbox folder (assuming you give it a few seconds to update before turning off your computer). Do a google search of "Cloud based storage comparisons" to compare the amount of free space each of the competing services give you.

  • Can someone help?  I am unable to open MS Word 2011 .docx files after installing LION OS.

I recently had a hard drive failure on my iMac.  A new 1TB hard drive was installed along with OS X 10.6.8.  Since restoring files from Time Machine, I am unable to open .docx files using MS Word 2011.  I receive a 'convert file' dialog box.  I can open .doc files that were restored from Time Machine and any new files in .docx format.  I cannot open any .docx files restored from Time Machine.   Has anyone else ran into this problem and do you have a workaround or solution?

I am having the same problem. When I save a document in word, particularly with track changes and comments, it freezes and crashes. I fould this forum as I was reading help posted in a previous forum and the "helping" comments were saying this must be a problem on the user end - but that can't be right as so many people are posting this problem. Its clearly an incompatibility between the software from two competing companies. Figure it out Apple!

  • My files suddenly disappear

    Hi,
I have an ipad and lately my files suddenly disappear, my pictures, my music, my videos. I don'n know what is going on. Can anybody help?

It sounds like maybe the iPad is crashing? ....
Double tap the home button at the bottom of the iPad to bring up the recents tray. If you have a lot of apps running you may want to close some of them. Tap and hold down on one of the icons until they wiggle. Then tap the minus sign to close them. When you are done, tap the home button once to return to the home screen.
Then reboot your iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears, then slide to power down.
Hold on the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and then go of the button and let the iPad restart.
You can also try a hard reset by holding down on the sleep button and home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, let go of the buttons and the iPad will restart.
