Word processing within a text component

Although this is a potentially great application, I am at present prevented from using it to create a website due to the lack, as far as I can determine, of any form of processing individual text within the text components e.g. making individual words or word groups bold or italic or giving them COLORS.
I have large informatory text areas on my pages which need this sort of processing in order to avoid client eyestrain as well as my own.
Of course one can get around this to some extent by using multiple components but for long texts this quickly becomes very tedious and error prone, especially if one wants to copy from another source.
The Static Text component, which I presume is meant for this sort of text, in it's present simple form allows word wrap but no line formatting. The basic Text Area component (multiple lines) has no word wrap but does allow line formatting. However when one sets the Read Only property, it seems that any self created line formatting is duly destroyed. This is strangely not the case with the old Standard Mutliline Text Area component.
I may be missing something but if not I hope that these features may yet be incorporated.
Regards,
Dave

You can use static text to render pure HTML, just set "escape" property to false.
Note that the HTML text must be well former.

  • How to embed a URL in a text component

    Hi,
    How would you embed a url within a text component such as static text?
    thanks, paul.,

    Hello,
    I would like to embed an external url (such as http://google.com) inside a panel
    My application is using several panels.
    In a panel, I add dynamically different ImageHyperlink components.
    I succeed to display in a different panel the expected infos when I click on a link.
    Now for some kind of Hyperlink components, I would like to be able to embed an external site within a container of my application.
    I read about <iframe> (http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/CreatorFrames.asp) but since I building most of my components dynamically. But I do not think that it could fit my needs.
    Today, when I put a panel id as a target of an hyperlink component, the external website is open in a new browser window.
    Thanks,

  • How to select text and pictures together in word processing mode?

    Hello,
    I have written about 20 chapters of a book in word processing mode. Each chapter has many pictures, carefully positioned within the text.
    Each chapter is a separate pages file.
    Now i want to put them together into one single document and have a big problem.
    When i press cmd+A to select everything in one document in order to copy and paste it into another document, i can either select the text OR the pictures, not both together.
    In Layout mode it is possible, but not in word processing mode.
    Does anybody know how to select both in word processing mode or how to transform a word processing document into a layout mode document?
    Or is there a way to put together a word processing document from a number of single documents?
    Thanks in advance

    I still use word processing for just about everything. The first two versions of Pages only had word processing. I think all of the complaints/requests about the "always-present" text layer led the developers to add page layout. I think they would have been better off adding another application (like AppleWorks' draw module compared to AppleWorks' word processing module.

  • I am copying and pasting into a new, Pages document (from the word processing menu), and I paste in text that is longer than one page, it doesn't continue onto the next page.  I can't see the end. How do I get it to show everything I paste in?

    I want to copy an extensive amount of text from a web page into a Pages word processing document, but it seems to chop it up into text boxes, some of which aren't long enough to show all of the lines of text.  I can't get hold of a bottom edge of the boxes to drag them to make them longer.  I tried several times starting over with a new, blank page (and I made sure to choose from the Word Processing part of the dropdown menu, since I read about a similar problem that said not to use the layout menu.  It keeps doing the same thing.  What do I have to do to get long text pasted to multiple pages, instead of it trying to be all on one page?
      In the long run, what I want is to create this as an ePub book.  Is there a better way to go about this?

    Hi Ellen,
    Copying from web pages can include some weird formatting. Instead of Paste, use Paste and Match Style (Edit Menu).

    Ian.

  • Selecting Text + Word Processing Recommendations

    So far my iPad is awesome, including the native word processing feature, which I'm enhaincing with a wireless keyboard. But there are a couple features I'd like to add...
    First, iPad allows me to select a word or all the text in a file. Is there a way to select two sentences, a paragraph, or whatever passage you want?
    Second, I'd like to be able to use basic styles - bold, italics, font size, etc. It would be especially nice if those styles would remain when I import a document into my MacBook Pro (which I haven't upgraded to Snow Leopard yet).
    I have iWork on my MacBook Pro but seldom use it. I'm a web designer, so I do most of my word processing in Dreamweaver. When I tried Numbers, it was good but it didn't quite match Excel, so I'm using Microsoft Office for Mac for spreadsheets. However, I installed iWork a few years ago and haven't kept up with the upgrades.
    Anway, based on my situation, can anyone tell me what my options are? What are some word processing programs that are compatible with iPad and that create documents I can import into my MacBook Pro? Word processing is far more important to me than the spreadsheet, but having a good spreadsheet program would be a bonus.
    Thanks.

    To select, just touch and hold on your iPad, choose "select" and then you can drag the select box handles to wherever you want.
    There are a lot of text editors, but for styled text, for serious word processing and and sharing with your MacBookPro, I recommend Pages. It's just a dream on the iPad, especially with the Apple Wireless keyboard, which I also recommend for typing anything more than a short comment or email. Pages will export to an iDisk as a Pages, Word or PDF file or you can email it or access it via iTunes. Since you have iWork on your MacBook Pro, this might be a good option for you.
    There are also great text editors for the iPad which have better syncing capabilities with DropBox, and I use some of those as well, but they don't, generally, style text. However, check out Notebooks, as it will let you style text (using MultiMarkdown) and it will let you email or open in DropBox. It's a really nice app.
    I am, admittedly, biased toward iWork. I use Numbers exclusively in place of Excel, but my spreadsheets are pretty simple affairs. I do collaborate frequently with other users on my campus who use Word/Excel and I've never had an issue opening their documents or exporting into those formats from Pages/Numbers. I also use Keynote, and so I only launch the Mac version of Office on rare occasions, usually when I absolutely must check and make sure my formatting is reading accurately.

  • Trying to get text to wrap ALL the way around either text, images, shapes in Mac Pages. I tried in Pages Word Processing

    I have tried everything to get text to "wrap completely around" other text, images, shapes.  Mac Pages - tried  Word Processing and tried Page Layout.  Inspector, wrap, Floating and Object causes wrap.  The text will ONLY wrap at the TOP and BOTTOM of the object, etc.  No matter which choice I make in Object causes wrapping.  It just doesn't work.  I have worked for hours on this - I can't find a solution.  HELP!

    What version of Pages?
    I suspect you are using Pages 5 in OSX 10.9 not OSX 10.8.4.

  • Disable wrapping of words in static text component inside gridpanel

    Hi
    I'm using static text components inside gridpanel. Now I noticed that in several cases the text, if consisting of several words, is broken into several lines both in the designer and at runtime.
    Question: is there a way to tell a static text component to never wrap the text into several lines?
    thanks, Peter

    Hi Peter,
    Check if the width of the gridpanel has been set. In case the width property has a fixed value then the static text component would wrap the text content to fit the width of the gridpanel.
    For example, below are the steps I followed:
    1. Drag and drop a gridpanel
    2. Drag and drop a staticText onto the gridpanel
    3. In the text property of the staticText enter the following sentence "This is a static text in a gridpanel which has only one column"
    4. It can be seen that the entire sentence is in one line
    5. Now select the gridpanel and click on the ... button next to style property to open up the style dialog
    6. Click on Position
    7. Under size, set the width to 100 px
    8. Click on OK
    9. As can been the sentence is now displayed over 5 lines
    Hope this helps
    Cheers

  • Find words within a text file

    Hey all.
    I am playing around with the idea of finding a line of text within a text file, by using scanner and some next methods.
    The way I am trying to get it to work is that one enters a string and the program then finds all the lines of text containing that
    user-entered string and then prints them.
    The text file in question contains names of University papers and their room numbers, quantity of students etc.
    Example:
    IBUS212     EALT006     1am     72     AL     LI
    BMSC241     MCLT102     2     pm     8     AL     COOREY
    My problem annoyingly enough seems to be that I can't think how one could compare the string entered to the lines of text being
    scanned in the text file.
    My latest go involved what you see in the code, scanning the examdata.txt file for a user-entered course number, using course.next();
    by going with the example above it would be IBUS212. The task was to then to find all of the lines containing that number and print them out using
    println (what I have tried with id and line) as well as the rest of that line eg: EALT006     1am     72     AL     LI .
       public void printCourse()
        try
            String details, input, id, line;
            int count;
            Scanner user = new Scanner(System.in);
            System.out.println();
            System.out.println();
            System.out.println("Please enter your course ID: ");
            input = user.nextLine();
            Scanner course = new Scanner(new File("examdata.txt"));
            course.next();
            course.nextLine();
            id = course.next();
            line = course.nextLine();
            if(input.equals(id))
                System.out.println("Your course times are: "  + id + "and" + line);
            else
              System.out.println("Your course does not exist.");
            catch(IOException e)
                System.out.print("File failure");
      }Any advice/help/troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

    You'll want [to loop while|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/while.html] the course Scanner has a next line and then print the line if it contains the entered text.
    For useful methods you can check the Javadoc of String and Scanner (use your browser search on keywords like 'next' or 'contains' to find them).

  • How to Scan a Paper Doc & Convert It with OCR to a Word Processing Format

    In an effort to save others with a similar need some time, I am posting a simple method of using he iPhone to scan a document and convert it, using optical character resolution, to an editable word processing format, usable on computers or iPhones and Android smartphones - all with free apps.  I found no free one-stop-shopping apps that did the job themselves.
    To begin, use the DocScan app to scan the paper document. this results in an Acrobat file (pdf).  If the document is already in pdf form, move on to the next step.
    Next, upload the pdf file to your Google Drive workspace, which automatically puts it through an OCR conversion, Google Drive automatically recognizes the text within pdf files uploaded from iPhones.
    Then open the file within Google Drive, select Open In and choose the Able2Extract app.
    Select the pdf file in Able2Extract and convert it to an MS Word (docx) file, which can be opened by Pages, Word or other word processing programs.  It can also be converted to a spreadsheet or presentation MS Office format.
    Finally, transfer the new docx file to the Documents app, the Dropbox app or another storage app, from which a word processing program can access it for editing.
    Many apps, including Able2Extract, convert all types of files into pdf format when going the reverse direction.

    Good day Larry,
    Are you referring to CreatePDF's ability to export existing PDF files to Word?  I want to confirm as Adobe CreatePDF doesn't have any sort of interface with scanners.
    Let me know a bit more about how you're creating your PDF files and then how you're using the CreatePDF service and I may be able to answer your question (or at least try!)
    Kind regards,
    David

  • How do i change the number of columns within a text box?  I need to go from three columns to one.

    How do I change the number of columns within a text box?  I need to go from 3 columns to 1.  The insert column is highlighted and column break does not work for this.

    Pages '09 does not seem to allow layout breaks in Textboxes.
    Pages 5.2 has the same limitation.
    Use multiple linked Textboxes in Pages '09 to get the layout you want or create your layout in a Word Processing template in the document layer.

    I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, and much written word, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?....
    Basically what I want to do is publish the document into both an eDocument, and a hard copy document. What is the best way to do this?

    No Peter, this statement came right off the Apple ePub statement when outlining how to use ePub. the full context is:

    ePub is an open ebook standard produced by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Pages ’09 lets you export your documents in ePub format for reading with iBooks on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
    iBooks supports both ePub and PDF file formats, and you can export both from Pages.
    When to use ePub or PDF
    Use ePub when text is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a book, a report, a paper, a thesis, or classroom reading material.
    More details on using ePubUse PDF when layout is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a brochure, a flyer, or a manual with multiple illustrations.

    Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks
    You can export any Pages word processing document to the ePub file format for reading in an ePub reader, such as the iBooks application on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.
    Documents exported to ePub format will look different than their Pages counterparts. If you want to get the best document fidelity between the Pages and ePub formats, style your Pages document with paragraph styles and other formatting attributes allowed in an ePub file. A sample document is provided on the Apple Support site that features styles and guidelines to help you create a Pages document that’s optimized for export to the ePub file format, which you can use as a template or a guide. To learn more about using paragraph styles in Pages, see the topics under the heading “Working with Styles” in the Pages built-in help.
    To read your ePub document in iBooks on your mobile device, you must transfer the ePub file that you create onto your device.
    To use the “ePub Best Practices” sample documentTo learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.
    Download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document at the following web address:
    http://images.apple.com/support/pages/docs/ePub_Best_Practices_EN.zip
    Do either of the following:Use the sample document as a template.Import the paragraph styles from the sample document into a new or existing Pages document.
    Export the document you create to ePub format to see how it looks in iBooks.
    Preparing an existing Pages document for export to ePub format
    Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.
    Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template.

  • Formatting HTML Text in Text component

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to render some Html text in a text component, I'm
    getting the HTML from within an xml document as such:
    <xml><htext><p><b>Testing HTML
    Text</b></p><p>Here's another
    line.</p></htext></xml>
    If I put that into a Text component with the htmlText=htext
    property, the line spacing is as expected, but it seems to add in a
    blank space character for every character of the html code. (E.g.
    "<b>Testing" adds 3 extra spaces before the word "Testing").
    Renders like (using - as space character):
    Testing HTML Text
    -Here's another line.
    If I use the condeseWhite=true property on the Text
    component, it fixes the extra space characters issue, but then
    stuffs the line spacing up, so <p> becomes rendered like a
    <br>.
    Renders like:
    Testing HTML Text
    Here's another line.
    Any thoughts, or help is much appreciated, thanks in advance.
    Oz
    P.S I was trying to avoid the obvious "br" tag which will
    make it work and render correctly....
    <p><b>Testing HTML Text</b></p>
    <br/><p>Here's another line.</p>

    no. use css.

  • Word processing, alternatives?

    I have Appleworks installed on my PB. It works for everything I need to use it for. I will be purchasing iWork soon for the Keynote feature for my public programs. However, the GOV Agency I work for uses MS XP for all the work computers. What I need is a word processing program that I can use to generate text documents on my PB that I can save on a CD or flash drive in .doc format that XP will read and print so I can do work away from the office. I don't want to spend $350+ on Office:mac. I have heard about NeoOffice. Any thoughts on that program. All I need is the word processing component. Any other alternatives? El P

    Hi, El Perdido.
    All third-party alternatives to MS Word have strengths and weaknesses. If you need true Word compatibility, you should get Word. If you need true Office compatibility, get Office. All alternatives are approximations to one degree or another. The more complex your documents, the more the approximations become problems for those reading documents in Office that you created in alternatives. Sharing those documents as PDFs, rather than source .doc or .ppt files can help.
    TextEdit, bundled with Mac OS X, is very basic. While it can create Word-compatible documents, and use the typography features of Mac OS X, it lacks basic functions, such as page numbering. Tables generated in TextEdit don't translate well to Word, and vice-versa.
    More robust solutions that are neither as expensive nor as bulky as Word include, in alphabetical order:
    - AppleWorks
    - Mariner Write
    - Mellel
    - Nissius Writer Express
    - Pages, part of Apple's new iWork bundle.
    - Ulysses
    These applications are frequently mentioned in discussions of MS Word alternatives. They each have their adherents and fans. AppleWorks obviously does more than word processing, so on a pure price comparison, it has features the others do not (drawing, etc.). iWork includes Keynote for presentations.
    Some additional "office suite" alternatives that are regularly mentioned include:
    -ThinkFree Office
    -NeoOffice: a free prototype of a port of OpenOffice to Mac OS X.
    You must compare your requirements against the features of each package to determine the one that best meets your needs.
    Good luck!

    I have an iMac OS x-5 - Leopard installed. What is the best Word Processing software for this older machine?  I need to create text boxes, I need to place columns within pages and I need to be able to re-size graphics within pages. Anything on the market is for newer machines. Any books or web sites to suggest where I might get advise. Any help is appreciated. I cannot upgrade at this time. Thanks.

    Check out these freeware apps.
    NeoOffice http://download.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
    AbiWord http://www.abiword.com/
    NeoOffice is equivalent to Microsoft Office. It can open Excel files, Word files & PowerPoint files. You can also create these types of files that can be opened by PC users. AbiWord is just a wordprocessor.
