Wordpress and Liveview

Sorry if this is a repetitive question (I searched but could not find a closed thread in the forum)...
I am using Dreamweaver CS5 / Windows 7 / XAMPP/ Wordpress 3.1 and following Brians 2nd article on 'Editing a WP Theme with DWCS5':
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/dw_wordpress_pt2.html
Now everything has worked fine from the first article:
I have now installed WP - tested and can view the default theme live (via test server)
I have installed the supplied theme into the correct wp-content/themes folder and via WP uploaded this theme so is live (test server)
Set up the DW site and all the files have populated within DW and again I can run the timetest file from the first article.
Have even set up the site–specific code hinting and thats fine.
The nest section is 'Previewing a Page' and this is where the problem occurs...
The article states:
Open the index.php file that is in the top level of the htdocs folder (at the same folder level as the dw_php_codehinting.config file you created earlier). Click the Design button to switch to Design view.
Ok - so I dont have a index.php file in the top level of the htdocs folder, the installation of wordpress and the theme didnt put on there and I havent copied it there. Surely the file which is being referenced is the index.php within the aforementioned wp-content/themes folder?
If I open this index.php file (from the themes folder) the error message I receive is:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_header() in C:\xampp\htdocs\BOMBTEST\wordpress\wp-content\themes\MyTheme\index.php on line 1
All the associated files (header etc) are still in the same directory, I havent changed any of the structure so I am confused...
If the test server (running XAMPP / MySQL) is all up and working, other PHP files/functions (such as call time) work - why doesnt DW show in Live View any of the themes index.php files.
Any help appreciated!!!

The index.php file for wordpress isn't the index.php file in your theme file.  Well, it is and it isn't.
As far as you as a theme developer is concerned, index.php is what you are interested in.  As far as the browser is concerned it will first go to that top-level index file and the build the page dynamically and eventually, if that's what it needs, Wordpress will work its way to the appropriate theme file(s).
I am afraid that I use CS4 (CS6, here I come!) and never really got on with the whole local server thing for a wordpress site.  I use Dreamweaver to edit then upload and test in the browser but then these days, I tend to do that for static sites as well.  I do have an index.php in the root of the WP site I am currently working in and it has this in it:
<?php
* Front to the WordPress application. This file doesn't do anything, but loads
* wp-blog-header.php which does and tells WordPress to load the theme.
* @package WordPress
* Tells WordPress to load the WordPress theme and output it.
* @var bool
define('WP_USE_THEMES', true);
/** Loads the WordPress Environment and Template */
require('./wp-blog-header.php');
?>

  • Finder crashes when uploading Images to Wordpress and Facebook

    Hi All,
This is a bit od a long description, but I wanted it to be specifec and detailed as I've tried a couple of searches through the discussions and none of the other solutions suggested have worked so far.
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a 2.2Ghz Core I7 MBP with 8GB of RAM.
I recently set up my own website and installed Wordpress. As it is a photography website, it involves a lot of image uploads, however every time I try to use the uploader and select my files through the web form, the browser hangs and so does the Finder. This behavior is the same across Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
The only way to get things rolling is to do a hard reset (using the power button). A friend of mine has faced the same issue in his system both with Wordpress and Facebook... And the two of us a stumped.
Here are some of the possible solutions I've tried :
    Disable Intego Firewall
    Disable Little Snitch
Repairing disk permissions through disk utility
Use Onyx to clear user and system caches
My suspicions lie with java asI believe both those sites use Java based uplod applets (sure about facebook, not sure about wordpress)
As a last resort, I've gone to the extent of installing windows on a Paralles Vm and using the browser there to perform the upload, but this has resulted in a crash once and the finder becoming unresponsive.
Any light you can share on the matter would be most appreciated.
If there are any logs I need to post here, please let me know how I'd get to them as I'm not too good with the Mac OS system utilities.
    Thanks.
    Brian

Ok took this one step further and swapped out the 8GB upgrade back to the 4GB that originally came with my laptop. This didnt solve the problem so I dont think this is related to the hardware.
Here's one more thing I noticed though. The crash doesnt happen if you upload files the moment you turn on the PC. But after about 15 minutes of usage if I try to upload the file... system down.
It also baffles me that finder gets taken down along with the browser......
Anyone with a similar issue  / solution ?

There is a new version of Firefox available today. You can get the latest update here:

This release should work with the latest flash player. Just to be sure you can check your flash player here http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
If it's not flash, try getting rid of everything that Firefox has stored for that website.

Ok so i have a 2.66ghz mac mini server running 10.6.4 and when veiwing a page created with wordpress via localhost is displays everything properly. but when veiwing it as an ip ( http://97.67.201.5 ) it loses all the formating data.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Does Wordpress and Adobe Muse play well together?

I already have a wordpress site, Can I use Adobe Muse to create more pages and published them on the wordpress site?
    Does it require plug ins?
If so, does anyone have an example on how to go about that.
    Thank you!

No that would not work. Muse is more for static brochure sites at the moment. I am sure they will add more cms type functions once it matures a little more.

  • Muse being compatible with wordpress and other cms GIANTS (THEMES)

    Greetings all
Muse is such a great software but its really not going to get that exposed and used that much because of the fact that its not compatible with Giants like Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal
just to name a few, after all most websites are using cms software right???
Muse is so fast and easy to get around if only there's a future update to export your template as a wordpress template, with out knowing advance PHP,HTML,CSS and SQL it will be a great success. (Checkout artisteer)
You probably thinking so why don't you use artisteer well people like me prefer using one software brand in this case the adobe suit does everything for me why should I move on to a third party software I really don't know about that well and pay additional money?
okay I'm trying to keep this short so PLEASE GUYS MAKE MUSE EXPORT YOUR THEMES AS A CMS

  • Using local host XAMPP with Wordpress and Dreamweaver

I hope this is within the scope of this forum. It's probably more of a WP than DW topic but I have found this forum to be very helpful on a wide scope of general web design/build topics so here goes.
I have a static html/css web site created with DW. I've got it as a local site on my computer and also have it uploaded to a remote host server (fatcow). It's using a temporary domain/address while under development and will replace an exisitng site when completed.
    http://www.prospectrealty1.fatcow.com/index.html
I have installed WP on the remote host and created a Blog thru the WP Dashboard. There is a link in the navigation of the static site to the WP Blog. When clicked a new tab opens and the user is taken to the seperate blog.
    http://prospectrealty1.fatcow.com/blog/
I want to be able to work on a copy of the blog "offline" on my local computer.
So I have xampp installed and it is working correctly  on the C drive of my computer. Next I copied my entire local site folder into a folder under the htdocs/xampp. So  Next I copied the folder I created that contains the wordpress install from the remote host at fatcow (I named it "blog"), and pasted it into my local install. So now I have localhost/xampp/prospect-blog-test/blog.

geez, I was editing  the post above but got an error and it didn't save my edits and left out the problem.  so here's the trouble.
After trying what I described above I made a new install of all of the WP files and put it here localhost/xampp/prospect-blog-test/. did this just to "start from scratch" Planning to export the WP files from the fatcow host and import into new local host install. I type localhost/xampp/prospect-blog-test into my browser and the WP splash screen appears and askis about creating the config file. First step is to specify the database. That's where I am having trouble.
Using mySQL on the fatcow host and following the seemingly simple instructions on the WP codex I export the database .sql file. Then I go to mySQL on my local host and try to import the .sql file.
I am getting the following error message.
    http://www.openrangeimaging.com/Test/local-host-MySQL.jpg
Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help or advice or point me to a resource will be much appreciated.
    thanks in advance

  • Downloading and editing an existing WordPress site in Dreamweaver CS5.

Hello! New to the forums, here.
I'll try to be brief. I've got a WordPress site in-place at metalmeter.com that is hosted through HostGator. Basically, what I'm looking to do is get the site from the remote server and edit it in Dreamweaver CS5, previewing all changes on a local testing server before putting the updated contents back on the remote server.
Now, let me be clear: I've tried plenty of the tutorials. I've watched hours of videos. I still can't get it configured properly. I've got the FTP connection to the remote server running smoothly. I've got XAMPP installed. I'm having difficulties (and I apologize for being vague), and I just don't know where the problem is located. In my htdocs folder for XAMPP, I've got two subfolders 'metalmeter' for the remote server's downloaded contents, and 'wordpress' for the wordpress installation that every page seems to be pointing me toward. What confuses me is that when I try and open the uppermost index.php file on the remote server, the dynamically discovered content is not being displayed in the live view with my local testing server. I want to be viewing my existing WordPress site in its entirety exactly as I see it online while I'm editing it, and then pushing back updated files to the /public_html/ root directory of the remote server so that I can edit the site from my local client. I'm extremely new to Dreamweaver, so any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
If you know how to do exactly what I'm trying to do and have been successfully viewing and editing your existing WordPress site in Dreamweaver for upload, please take some time to explain the set-up. I'd be forever in your debt!

I've been following this discussion for a while now and I don't understand why you hope to edit articles from DW.  That's what the WP Admin panel is specifically designed for.  Besides, you won't find your articles in any of the site files because they don't exist there.
I agree I don't see any reason to want to edit a Wordpress site in Dreamweaver. If you are using Wordpress then you may as well put Dreamweaver in the bin. Although people do actually want to edit and manipulate the design in Dreamweaver (including myself) and from what I've read its possible but I've never found a source which explains fully how to achieve this and those that I have it seems too much effort to even bother about.
I guess the Dreamweaver environment feels more like home and is more user friendly.
To put it another way, a typical WordPress installation contains around 800 files in some 80 folders.  Those files don't contain any content, just a whole lot of PHP code.   In fact, the only page most people ever see on your site is the index.php page which is dynamically created over & over by the server with content from the MySql and various include files.
For sure and that's why people who use Dreamweaver and feel the need to manipulate a Wordpress site in Dreamweaver because Wordpress is 'in vogue' get lost. Wordpress just containes a lot of pages with nothing to see apart from some php, many of who will not understand one jot.
Unless you're a coding guru, you should definitely NOT touch any of the core WP files as this could cripple your site.  If you want to customize your Theme, look at the CSS and include files in your Themes folder.   See Anatomy of a WordPress Theme:http://yoast.com/wordpress-theme-anatomy/
    lol your not wrong there!
For a quick tip on Theming, open your remote site in Firefox equipped with the 'Web Developer Toolbar'.  Edit CSS on screen.  Save changes to your local site and upload it to the remote server.  No testing server required.
Wordpress is Wordpress and Dreamweaver is Dreameaver. As far as I can make out the two don't mix.
Ideally you would just choose a Wordpress theme which most relates to the nice site you have designed in Fireworks of which you won't find any however goodthe themes are. Then manipulate the themes css that's if you can understand it. Even for a seasoned css expert its heavy going because everyone produces css differently to achieve the same results.
Leave Wordpress well anlone unles you're going to use it out of the box so to speak or as a web-developer don't mind a bit of reverse engineering.

is there an EASY way to submit podcasts to the itunes store? i've tried creating podcasts in garageband, then somewhere after wordpress  itunes  doesn't recognize the feed.
my process has been (i am open to suggestions for other free and EASY services/methods):
garageband : create & edit audio. add 1400x1400 image.
    share to itunes.
    drag file to desktop.
upload .m4a file to google drive.
create a link post in wordpress using "podcast" tag & create "podcast" category.
click on "entries rss" in wordpress, which takes me to the rss subscribe page (which is basically just my wordpress address with "/feed" at the end.
    i copy this url.
go to itunes store > then "submit a podcast"
itunes gives me the error message "we had difficulty downloading episodes from your feed."
when i try to subscribe to my podcast in itunes, it does, but gives me no episodes available.
i went back into wordpress and changed settings/ reading settings to : "full text" from "summary"
    still the same error message.
i added a feedburner step after wordpress but got the same errors. i don't think i should have to add feedburner.
wordpress seems to be encapsulating the rss, what am i doing wrong?
this so much easier when you could go directly from garage band to iweb to mobileme; i miss those apple days (also idisk).

if anyone has a super EASY process, i would LOVE to know what it is. EASY, meaning no html and also free. there are many free online storage systems available, many of which i currently use. the above process was just me trying to figure it out, if you have an easier method, please share. thank you so much!

  • CS5.5 and WordPress Multisite

So, I upgraded from my CS4 to CS5.5 last week.  I've extremely excited about the Live View / Inspector aspect of editing my php and WordPress projects.  I'm running this on a suped up win 7 box.  I deleted/uninstalled my old xampp setup and downloaded a new one.  I'm going to have a Solr search engine for a WordPress Multisite blog/directory when I'm all done.  So, I spent the time to also set up tomcat and get an instance of Solr running on my local machine.  (not that this is important, but shows I'm not a complete beginner).
I've followed the tutorials on setting up WordPress to be able to do the testing server, live view and editing.  Everything works fine on a new single blog install (I started a brand new one just to check and to do the Lynda.com tutorials, which are working just fine.)  But, when I go to the Multisite Sub-Blog and set up the discovery of the related links DW gives me a whopping 4 files that are linked.  I can follow the links on the live view pages, but the dynamic linking files are not showing up in the top toolbar?  I can't jump over to the header.php file and then back to the index.php file, because they are not finding all of the linking php files.
As, I mentioned, it's a multisite only problem, becuase it's working on a single blog install just fine.  I thought maybe it was because of the addressing, the testing folder was different from the root website.  So, I edited the vhosts.conf file and hosts file to add a specific testing domain name and there was no change except that I don't get the error anymore when I set up the testing server that the site url of "/" doesn't match the one I had that was "/mydirectory/".
This was an older site that was set up in Dreamweaver that I just kept changing all of the local testing environment stuff, but the link to the remote server was still active.  So, I thought that might be causing the trouble because it was going out to that server to try to follow some of the dynamically linked pages.  So, I completely deleted everything and started over with a fresh Site with just the Testing server set up, fresh wordpress, fresh evreything.  I am able to discover the related links in the file right up to when I turn on multisite in a sub-directory install and the whole discovery of related links wigs out.
If you look at the http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network I checked the dynamic links at each step.  It worked turning on Multisite and going to network setup, but as soon as I entered the code in the wp-config.php file for defining a multisite and added the .htaccess file then the whole thing breaks.
I'm sure it has to do with how the path is loaded somehow dynamically, but as many people that there are running this combo, of Dreamweaver 5.5 and trying to work on Wordpress, and maybe a Multisite install since it's so much easier in 3.0+ I was surprised that there was nothing on the web about this issue.
    Thanks for any help upfront.
    Jerry

The WordPress Multisite does use mod rewrite in .htaccess. The contents of that are found in the link I provided on setting up a WordPress Multisite install found at WordPress.org.  As each of the sub-blogs require the use of elements and data from the main site and structure to draw the pages I do not think that setting up each sub-blog as it’s own site definition would work.  It would still have issues finding the relating files.  I guess, if someone figured out how to use Dreamweaver on a blog hosted at wordpress.com to edit themes and such that would probably flow to solving this issue as well.
Since this is on a Development XAMPP server on my own machine, if I put the .htaccess code in my httpd.conf file instead would that make a difference?  Or is it the mod rewrite that is the issue no matter where it resides?
I basically decided to set up each sub-blog as a completely separate “site” for now since all I’m sync’ing is the theme folders anyways at that point and all I was truly after was the Live View / Inspector for making the layout changes.  When I did that though and activated all the plugins that I’m using I noticed some issues with file discovery as well.  I saw in one of the tutorials that there was a way to link a style.css file manually for “design” prior to uploading the site.  Is there anything inside of Dreamweaver that would allow us to manually add the necessary php file for the finder.  I’m pretty sure that it’s getting stuck at the line that is saying (dirname(__FILE__) . “wp-load.php” or something like that (off the top of my head).  Once that relative file would be found my guess is that it would discover all the other ones?  Or there is an issue with the ABSPATH variable being set early on in the WordPress installation.
At this point I’ve tried a dozen different ways to get this to work and it’s obviously broken.  Since it’s so prevalent (I think a lot of the posts I read had this also as a multisite drupal/joomla issue as well) that it would be something worth figuring out how to provide a work around.
