Workflow - Timing between PS and Lightroom

I'm new to Lightroom and PS, and love both :-)
I'm wondering, do most people do their processing in PS or Lightroom first?
My instinct tells me to get the exposure, crop, etc. as I want it in LR and then do any PS processing after that. But wouldn't this then "lock in" any changes made in LR? Once you save back from PS, your lightroom changed are concrete - is this correct?
Thanks for any advice!

First of all, I will assume that you are talking about working on raw images.  My workflow is always to do as much as I possibly can in Lightroom and then turn to Photoshop when necessary.  About 90% of the time I don't even use Photoshop.  I rely on it mostly for panorama stitching and occasionally some more extensive cloning.
When a raw image is sent to Photoshop all changes that have been made in Lightroom will be included.  And any additional changes made in Photoshop will be included in that image.  When it is saved and you are returned to Lightroom the image that was worked on in Photoshop will be saved as a separate image.  That copy will include all of the Lightroom and Photoshop, and those changes will be "baked" into that image.  However, the original raw image will still be in its Lightroom edited stage.  Those changes can still be undone and you can do whatever you want to that image.
If you send a JPEG image to Photoshop, one of the options is to send the original image.  If you choose to do that than any of the changes made in Photoshop will become part of the master image you see in Lightroom.

  • How to break the link between photoshop and lightroom when saving a photo?

I've had an ongoing issue with saving copies of photos I import from LR to PS and back into LR. Any multiple copies I make get erased when they move back to LR. My solution has been to save a copy in an extra folder apart from Lightroom and import them in later. It's rough, but it works. But now I have a new demon.
I tweaked a photo in LR, made a copy to keep it safe, then sent the copy over to PH where I did some magic. I Saved As in that special other folder, closed the tab, got the usual box asking if I wanted to save the changes (of course I did), I went back to LR to see both the original and copy changed over to the PS version. I went back to PS, opened the .psd, unclicked the mask, clicked the checkbox, when back to LR and both the original and copy in LR had the mask removed.
    I'm missing something here.
There m u s t be a way to break the link between PS and LR so that when I save a copy of a photo I made in LR the original and copy remain two separate photos. Does anyone know how?
    Thanks,

I think I am a little confused. What you are describing seems more like a Project Server "Profile" issue, than a SharePoint to MS Project Sync.
If my guess is correct, then you just need to set the default profile to be something other than your computer.
If I am wrong, a screenshot of the error would be really helpful.

  • Timing Between Audio and Video Thrown Off

I have a large project to complete. The other day, I logged an MPEG that's approximately 50 minutes using pen and paper. When I loaded this MPEG into Adobe Premiere CS4 and started separating clips based on my notes, I noticed that the video no longer matched the time codes I'd written down; Video that was supposed to have already taken place hadn't started yet.
At first, I thought the time code for the video was different than what Windows Media Player displayed, but there's another issue: The audio isn't in sync with the video. It's been displaced so that it begins about 16 frames before it should.
I checked the framerates of both my project and the video. They're both at 29.97 fps. I'm out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Difference in RAW reading between Photoshop and Lightroom

    Hi All
I have today noticed that Photoshop and Lightroom does nor read a RAW file the same way. Both running the 4.4.1 engine.
Here is a screen dump from PS, showing quite a lot of Highlight clipping.
    http://picasaweb.google.dk/taasti/PSVsLG/photo?authkey=1J4sXZ_SvZw#5191662550019326466
And here is the same picture shown in Lightroom:
    http://picasaweb.google.dk/taasti/PSVsLG/photo?authkey=1J4sXZ_SvZw#5191662618738803218

ACR will show clipping relative to the chosen color space, while (correct me if I'm wrong) Lr will always show clipping relative to ProProtoRGB.
You might want to convert a raw to DNG so that ACR settings will be embedded, then develope in either (choosing PpRGB as a pref in ACR), and then inspect in the other. It may even be useful to first make a copy of the DNG, name one Lr, the other ACR, and do the same thing going both directions. [Edit: The final test would be to open both in Ps ... and report back.]
What's your OS platform, and with what method have you calibrated your display? Are you using dual monitors? (none of these ?s will affect the degree of clipping, but might affect the brightness)
It's a fetch, but is there any chance the clipping level can be set as a preference? (ie, '252') Or is clipping simply defined to be off the histogram. (ie, '255')

  • Importing strategies between iPhoto and Lightroom 5

During the installation process, Lightroom imported the 5,000 or so photos from my iPhoto library into Lightroom's Ircat catalog. Going forward, I'm planned to organize my photos much better with key words, metadata, etc. Also, I just bought a new camera and plan to take both RAW and JPEGs. So does it make sense to create a second catalog for those images from iPhoto, or somehow, segregate them creating two folders within only one catalog? In addition to understanding the best strategy, I need to know how to do this. Finally, although I use Time Capsule to safely back up my computers, I wanted to get some advice regarding to pros & cons for using an external hard drive to store my images when using Lightroom 5 (i.e., does it make sense using a another drive with a library of 5,000-10,000 images, etc.)?? Cheers

If disk space is the primary you could buy an awful lot of external HD space for the price of Lightroom and run your iPhoto Library from an external disk.
    Are you shooting Raw?
For my money - and I realise that it's not - you only get half the value of apps like Aperture and Lightroom (and Aperture is about $100 cheaper btw) if you're shooting jpeg. These apps are designed to make life easier for Raw shooters, and act as large scale digital asset managers. While these apps will still work on jpegs of course, it's a bit like using a Humvee for the school run. It'll do it, but there are more effective uses for a Humvee
IPhoto, Lightroom and Aperture are all designed as Digital Asset Managers - They all work to preserve your original file. While the last two work somewhat differently than iPhoto neither represents a significant space saving in practice.
If you must overwrite your files, then don't use a DAM application. Just use a photo editor like Photoshop or Graphic Coverter. The latter is great value and has some photo management built in, too.

  • Print Problem: inconsistent density between sizes and Lightroom/Photoshop

In the past I printed using only Photoshop. I recently made a batch of prints from Lightroom, using the same paper, printer profile, rendering intent, and noticed that the output does not match the output from Photoshop. The Lightroom prints have noticeably more density. I then noticed that large Lightroom prints, for example 16 x 24, have noticeably more density than smaller size Lightroom 6 inch x 9 inch prints. I find no difference in print density when printing from Photoshop regardless of the print size. I can not determine why I am experiencing these variations in print output.
All prints are made using an Epson 7900 on Museo Portfolio Rag, same ICC profiles, same exact setup in the Epson printer driver (off no color adjustment), PS: PS manage color and same icc profile specified in both  Lightroom and Photoshop. The computer is a Windows 7 machine.
Has any one else experienced these problems? My first thought is that this is some sort of bug in Lightroom's color management. But if that was true, then it seems like a lot of people would be having this problem. I have been using a color managed workflow for a number of years and have gotten very satisfactory results. My prints are a close match to the soft proof in Photoshop. Since printing from Lightroom the prints do not match prints made from Photoshop, plus the prints made by Lightroom vary in density depending on the size. Bizarre.
    Please help

Solved. Somehow the custom media setting for the Museo Portfolio Rag paper was lost when I set up the LR template. The custom media setting reduced the color density by -20 in the Epson Printer driver. With out this setting the color density was at the default zero and the density was greater.
This brings up another question that I will have to explore. I arrived at the -20 color density setting when testing various Epson Driver media settings for the 7900 prior to profiling this paper after Epson replaced the nozzle heads on my 7900 printer. I found at the default zero color density I encountered banding. Prior to the replacement of the nozzle heads the default zero color density worked fine and there was no banding. Interestingly, on the 16 x 32 print that mistakenly used the zero color density setting there was no banding. Now I want to go back and redo my media tests. Is it possible that the new print heads needed a breaking in period and that is why I encountered banding on both the Museo Portfolio Rag and the Epson mat paper?

  • Can anyone help with workflow problem between iPhoto and Photoshop CS4?

I am very new to CS4 Extended, having upgraded from Elements 6 recently. I use iPhoto '08 to do all my photo organization and really enjoy it, have a LOT of work invested in it and don't really want to switch to anything else if I can help it. One aspect I like about it is that it tucks away my original in case I ever need to revert. With Elements, I could set my iPhoto preferences to allow all my editing to be done externally using Elements 6, but it would only allow 4 photos to be sent over to Elements at a time. Then I would have to go back to iPhoto and "get" more. I thought that when I upgraded to CS4, I would at least be allowed four at a time to be sent from iPhoto to Photoshop for editing. Whenever I do this, it sends only one, maybe two, but never four. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I'm annoyed at having to constantly go back for one or two photos at a time to edit and wondered if anyone knew of a workaround for this problem. The reason I have done it this way all along is that the two programs would work together and update my iPhoto pics and thumbnails automatically. Since then, I have just opened the iPhoto files from within CS4, but the edit doesn't update the thumbnails, only the enlarged versions within iPhoto. Neither Apple nor Adobe has been able to offer any solutions. I am not looking to create multiple copies of my files. I download straight from my camera to iPhoto. I could always just download them to a folder, edit them in CS4 and then import them into iPhoto, but that would necessitate making a copy of the photos to keep the originals safe and I'm not sure I want to have to organize all my originals elsewhere on top of my iPhoto library. I am very open to suggestions!
    Thanks!

I appreciate your response. I recently did a reinstall, hoping it might help. It didn't seem to make any difference. Don't know if I need to just switch to a different program like Lightroom or just do all my editing outside of iPhoto and then import the results, but that defeats the purpose of letting iPhoto handle my originals so easily. I really like iPhoto and what it does, and have spent a lot of time getting my library compiled just the way I like with keywords, ratings and so on, and I'm afraid that switching to a new product will lose a lot of that work and either cause me to split my library into two places or to create unnecessary duplicates.

  • Workflow Circuit between FCP and After Effects with HDV

I am trying to set up a workflow circuit with FCP 5.1.1 and AE 7.0 using HDV. We are:
    1. building sequences with FCP
    2. exporting to AE
    3. adding in FX with AE
    4. putting those back into FCP
The footage we are using is compressed with HDV 1080i60 in FCP.
My problem is finding the correct way to export the HDV with FCP. I have tried using Quicktime Conversion but the only option I can find for uncompressed video didn't work when we tried to transfer it.
I think the main problem is that the AE work is being done on PCs and the video that we have tried sending can't be read by PCs. The audio plays through fine but the video shown is nonexistent.
What conversion should we use in FCP that allows us to keep the video uncompressed and in its best quality for use in AE? And what works best on the AE end of it?
Can someone give some advice on steps that they would or have taken for a project of the same ilk.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What's your system setup? What FX exactly (e.g. color correction, or just random FX thrown in every now and then)? What went wrong when you tried using an uncompressed codec?
    1) If everything's on an external FAT32 formatted drive (fat chance, get it?), then i think you could export a quicktime reference of your timeline (choose the option that ends up giving u a tiny file). Then plug the drive into your PC, load the Quicktime Ref (also known as QT Ref) into AE7 and FX away. Then export a QT with HDV 1080i60 specs and reimport into FCP.
    2) If you're only doing occsional FX (e.g. gun flashes, lasers from robots, etc..), and nothing that encompasses the entire length of the project (e.g. color correction), you could export a hashed down QT Conversion of the timeline with whatever decent codec that works (e.g. DV NTSC). Then import into AE7, lay down the video, add your effects. But then before you export your FX, turn OFF your original video layer so all your FX are on a transparent background. Export clips with alpha channel and reimport those into FCP.
    3) Ensure that the PC is using the latest version of quicktime. It may need to be upgraded to whatever version is on the Mac, and it may need to be registered as Pro.

  • Export/Import of keywords between Elements and Lightroom

I am wish to import the Pictures I have in my Element 11 catalogs into the Lightroom 5  catalogs. I have applied keywords/tagging to my Pictures in Elements and wish to import the same keywords/tags to the Pictures after they have been imported to Lightroom.
Is this possible? I the help files for Lightroom I find the following guidance:"To import keywords into the catalog, choose Metadata > Import Keywords, navigate to and select the text file or catalog file containing keywords" However I am not able to locate the text/cataloge file for Elements containing this info.
I would very much appreciate any help on this as I have several thousend Pictures which I wish to transfer.

  • Photo syncing between iPad and Lightroom?

iTunes supports Adobe's Photoshop Elements as a source application for photo albums to sync to iPad. I'm thinking of switching from PSE9 to LightRoom 4, and have downloaded a trial copy. I currently sync PSE albums to my iPad2 via iTunes (Windows 7). I don't see any way of doing the equivalent with LR. Does anyone know a way, other than by using another piece of s/w like Photosmith? Is iTunes likely to get support for LR?

Lightroom is a non-desctive photo editing platform (which is a huge step up from PSE by-the-way). Part of this is that you will need to export your photos before you can use your edited photos. After exporting them to a folder, you can have iTunes monitor those folders.
Another app you should consider is Mosaic View is which is better than Photosmith at providing instant automatic access to your Lightroom photos.
Something tells me that with Aperture/iPhoto being a direct competator to Lightroom... automatic Lightroom access is not in the cards nativly in iOS anytime soon.

  • Workflow advice between LR and PS?

I currently use LR4 and PS CS6. I primarily use LR to store and tag my 30,000 photos, and I use PS for editing. By editing, I typically will adjust levels, saturate colors and do light cloning/healing. I'm going to start placing watermarks on lots of my images to be uploaded to the web, so I'm thinking it may be easier to just do this all from LR and only go into PS if necessary?
    1. Just curious to hear your thoughts on reasons to go into PS based on what I am doing and how you would approach this?
    2. For placing watermarks on lots of images, would you do this in LR or PS?
    Thanks for any input.

I would do it all in LR. Nothing you have said requires PS at all. But, I admit that I can't see your photos, there may be specific edits that are better done in PS, same with watermarks, so ... since I can't see your photos, I can't be specific

  • I'm trying to understand the difference between Photoshop Elements and Lightroom software.

Does one have things the other does not?

    Hi,
Lightroom is to manage photos and produce derivative images without ever modifying an original file. Its processing functionality has a narrow feature-set covering the most common needs of professional photographers whereas Elements is a simpler yet powerful photo manipulation tool. Elements is designed to satisfy the needs of photo enthusiasts who like to manipulate images.
You can also go through the thread to understand the basic difference between PSE and Lightroom.
    Check if this helps.

  • Workflow Interface between Lightroom 2 and PSE7 - Resources?

Hi, I'm a new member, and a new user of both PSE7 and Lightroom 2.3. I love the organising and raw processing capacity of LR, and need PSE7 for simple filters, layers etc. CS4 would be expensive overkill for my needs.
I am looking for resources:- manuals/podcasts/articles/tutorials to instruct me how to use the two together - preferably in Windows speak.
There's loads of wonderfully helpful info around about LR - which I'm soaking up - and there's similarly loads about PSE7, but when it comes to the work flow interface most sources focus on combining Photoshop CS3/4 and LR. Fundamentally the interfaces aren't hugely different, but there are differences and they are frustrating to bump up against.
For example it's no longer possible to upgrade catalogs from PSE7 to LR2, whereas it was from PSE6 and is from CS. And in the Photo - "Edit In" dialogue in LR, CS4 is a default - to set up PSE7 I had to choose preferences specifying PSE7's editor.exe as I would for any 3rd party editor. (Am I right in thinking that earlier LR versions had Elements as a default external editor?)
I almost feel as a user that I'm being steered away from combining PSE7 and Lightroom 2 (I do have slightly paranoid tendencies though)
I am making headway, and extracting pieces of useful information from different places, but would find it extremely helpful to have something coherent that would take me through the process. (Maybe there's a slim volume there for someone.)

I think you may have hit a nerve with this.  When I was trying to decide between the two, the Adobe Sales Person couldn't even explain the differences.  I now know that the Lightroom nondestructive editing and great organizing capabilities are what I want, but I also have both.  As you said, there are many books on each, and several on PS and LR2, but none on this combo.  I like the Photoshop.com program, and will like it more when they figure out that Friends should be able to see all your shared albums without using single email links for each album.  I hope you get an informed response, and I'll ride your coattails!

  • OTL - Table Relationship between Timecard and Workflow

    Hi All,
Our employees work multiple projects and charge their time thru OTL to each of individual project as appropriate every pay period. Each project has it's own project manager. When an employee sumbits his timecard for approval the workflow routes an approval notification to EACH project manager. Every project manager must approve the employee's timecard before the "overall" timecard status is APPROVED.
For example, an employee works on four diffent projects - each project has a different PM. When the employee submits his timecard for approval an approval notification is sent to all four PMs. However, more than occasionally at least one of the PMs doesn't approve the timecard in a timely fashion so the employee's timecard is "hung up" waiting for approval.
I need to write a query in which I specifiy both an employee and particular pay period, and the query returns for the employee/pay peirod EACH Project Name, the PM for the respective project, and whether or not the the PM has approved the employee's time for the respective PM's project in the specified pay period.
Unfortunately I don't really know where to start. I don't know if there is an HXC or group of HXC tables that would allow me to report on the individual project manager's 'status' (i.e., has a PM approved his project in the employee's timecard)...or do I need to allow include some workflow tables such as (maybe ?) wf_notifications ? And if I need to include some WF tables can someone help me understand where the relationship between timecard and WF is definded/stored (in other words, for a particular timecard how can I query a WF table - for example, wf_notifications - and find all the respective notifications associated with that particular timecard ?
I hope my question is clear, but please advise if you have any questions. Thanks in advance for the help !!
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
Did you ever get an answer on this question, as I have similar issues.
One question you may be able to answer - Do all approvals on the project side need to be done for ANY project information to pull into Project Accounting, or as each Project Manager approves their portion does it pull in to PA?
    Thanks very much!!
    Lori
