Workflow to erase a DVD?

Is there a way to make a workflow that will erase a DVD without any user interaction? I'm playing with the demo of Personal Backups X5, and it can be set up to run an application or Applescript before it starts a backup. The idea would be to reuse a DVD for each scheduled (unattended) backup, doing the same thing that a Recycle backup does in Retrospect 6.1.

OK, with a little research and modification, I got it to run as an Automator application and a workflow, but Personal Backup fails to run it. I have almost no experience at this, but here's what I came up with. First, I have 2 drives, and second, the "erase" command ejects the disc. So...
First Run Shell Script
drutil -drive internal erase quick
Second Run Shell Script
drutil -drive internal tray close
When I run the application or workflow by itself, it works fine, but when I try to have Personal Backup run it as preparation for the backup script, it seems like it just ignores it, so I've emailed their support. Their manual says you can use "Preparation" to run an AppleScript, shell script or Automator workflow, or any application. I haven't tried an AppleScript or shell script because I don't know how to do that, or what the correct syntax is. Any help on that?

  • Disk utility won't erase a dvd-rw

i want to erase my dvd-rw and when i go to disk utility and click "completely erase" the status bar says "preparing the drive" and then "waiting for drive" and right after that a window pops up saying that i've just inserted a blank dvd, and it asks what option i want. (eject, ignore, ok;action) and the dvd doesn't get erased. any help is greatly appreciated

I am experiencing a similar problem. I have recently erased several CD RWs with Toast & Firestarter. Suddenly yesterday I try to burn a disc, but the only option showing in Disk Utility under Optiarc is The Erase section, stating "Waiting For A Disc To Be Inserted". (No First Aid, Raid, Partition sectors showing). Now, I have just erased about 10 discs but the Erase section is static. It's like it's on a loop, expecting all discs loaded to be erased. Normal CDs are rejected, but DVDs are just fine. Restarting doesn't help. Is this something that you were experiencing and have you found an answer yet.

  • Cannot burn and erase rewritable DVDs

    Hi all,
two month ago I ordered the new MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011). Some days later I wanted to erase a rewritable DVD to burn an iDVD project I just finished. I tried to erase the DVD with the hard drive program that comes with every mac, but the status doesn't change, it's always saying to "prepare" the erasure. After some minutes it stops and a message saying that the disk has been successfully erased appears. Ejecting and inserting the DVD makes all files visible again, the optical drive made nothing.
It's nearly the same with burning DVDs (I tried several programs). In iDVD, he "prepares" the burning for some minutes, and afterwards, a message declares the DVD as successfully burned. Ejecting and inserting the disk - NOTHING happened, there are no files on the disk.
I tried several brands, no improvement. I have absolutely no problems with CDs, no difference whether I use +R/-R or +RW/-RW disks. And the technical details of my MacBook Pro also say that burning rewritable DVDs is no problem.
Thanks for possible solutions and ideas,
    jalfke
    Technical details:
MacBook Pro series 13" early 2011 (the "newest" one)
    Intel Core i5 @ 2,3 GHz
    4 GB RAM
    500 GB HDD
    Optical Drive: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898

Sorry for the bad information, the program I mean is die "Disk Utility" in Programs -> Utilities. Erase and burn images on rewritable DVDs should be possible with this utility. I have absolutely no problems with "only-once"-writable DVDs.

  • 16:9 Help needed. Workflow: extracted video from DVD, FCE HD edit & DVDSP.

    Hi,
I have a project where according to the camera person it was shot in 16:9 with the camera (assuming a DV camcorder of some sort). It was captured from the camera and converted to a DVD (VIDEO_TS folder and everything) and sent to me for editing.
What I need help with is a workflow (and settings) to edit and output this properly.
    1) My first hiccup comes in the extract. When I view the DVD that was sent to me, the video looks squished as it squeezes the video into the 4:3 aspect ratio. I was using MPEG Streamclip to extract it. I've extracted it in a 16:9 QT format and it looks fine in FCE HD. However, once I started reading more about editing 16:9 video in the FCE PDF manual, I'm wondering if I should have kept it as 4:3 and then toggled the Anamorphic setting for the sequence.
    2) Once I have the correct source to edit - are there any considerations on export for compression? I read somewhere about a program to set the anamorpgic bit for iDVD, but plan to use DVDSP so I'm assuming I can skip this step. I also read in the forum about a QT Conversion setting to use. Do I need to? I was planning to export a reference movie and use Compressor with that. I was planning to use a "Widescreen" compressor option. Is this correct?
    3) I know this is beyond this forum, but any advice on what settings should I use in producing the DVD? As noted above I plan to use DVDSP 3 to create the DVD, and I do notice the 16:9 settings in there for each track. I was planning to use the 16:9 Letterbox track setting. Is this correct?
Any other pitfalls I should be aware of as I navigate the 16:9 jungle?
    Thanks in advance.

First, with regard to your chipset - graphics/video card:
Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset, featuring the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 450...
Your graphics card has no video RAM (VRAM) of its own.  So, it must use some of your system RAM to be able to function. This is 'dynamically allocated'. That is, your system decides how much system RAM to allocate to the graphics card. I am not aware of anyway to manually control this.
Next, you said you have installed Windows XP. Toshiba India has not posted any XP drivers for your system. Toshiba laptops are very finicky about using Toshiba 'tweaked' hardware drivers to be able to function properly. This computer is a Toshiba European version of your model, and it would appear to have a full set of XP drivers, these will work just fine in your system:
    Satellite Pro C650 PSC11E Downloads
The order you load the hardware drivers and Toshiba utilities is critical. The files available for download above are all zip files, so you will have to extract the .exe files to be able to install them. Install the drivers first, then the Toshiba utilities, and given that you already have XP basically working install in this order:
    1st Drivers:
    1) Chipset
    2) Storage Manager
    3) Display
    4) Sound
    5) then all other XP hardware drivers
    2nd Utilities:
    1) Common modules
    2) Hotkey utility
    3) all other XP Toshiba utilities.
    Good luck.

  • How can I erase the DVD-RW to use it again

I have recorded tv prog from media centre on to a dvd -rw disc.
How do i now erase the disc so I can use it again?

If you have NERO Burning ROM then put the DVD-RW you want to erase in your DVD Burner drive and go into the NERO program.
    Then follow these steps:
    1) Click "Recorder",
    2) Click "Choose Recorder" in the drop-down menu
    3) Click your DVD Burner Drive in the "Choose Recorder" window and then click the "OK" button at the bottom of that window,
    4) Click "Recorder" again when you go back to the NERO Burning ROM window,
    5) Click "Erase ReWritable" in the drop-down menu,
    6) The "Erase CD-RW" window should come up and indicate "Quick-erase rewritable media" (if not, select it) then click the "Erase" button at the bottom of the window. When the burner drive stops the DVD should be erased. You can check it by clicking "Recorder" in the NERO Burning ROM window and then click "Medium-Info" in the drop-down menu.

  • Best workflow for Blu-ray/DVD projects

For most of my encore projects, I end up creating a blu-ray and dvd version of the project.  What is the best way/workflow to do this?  I always seem to end up running into problems.

Unless you are working with a high end pro format, Pro Res 422 is perfectly fine to use as a master file. PR 4444 is PR HQ with an alpha channel so you probably can save a lot of space and speed up your exports by dropping down two levels.
If you use the BluRay prests in Compressor, it should do a very good job of encoding. Perhaps Toast is recompressing your file. I don't use the software but I think there is a setting simewhere to avoid the second compression.
Or have FCP make the BD directly.

  • How to Erase a DVD+R DL ??

I have the Plextor, and can write to the above discs. But how do I erase them for another movie ??
    Thanks, rick

DVD+R discs (as well as DVD-R) are write once, they can not be erased. If you want to erase and reuse a writable DVD you need to use either DVD-RW or DVD+RW and as far as I know these are both limited to single layer. Then there is DVD-RAM but not very many drives support that type of media.

  • Workflow to make PAL dvd

I have DVC Pro 720p and need to make a dvd in PAL for festival submission.
I know Compressor isn't the best way to go for quality.
What's a good workflow? I am thinking convert to PAL DVDPro50, then create an MPEG2 from that.
Any setting ideas would be helpful as well.
    Thanks guys.

PAL isn't just a different frame rate, right? It is also a different resolution.
Personally, I'm getting ready to head overseas for an extended period of time and will be shooting NTSC and HD (not sure which format yet). I will need to output to formats played all over the world in different locations on different formats. Is PAL completely standardized like NTSC? Or are there all kinds of formats like HD? Do you make a DVD just like it were NTSC, just with different resolution menus, etc?
Any insight would be huge. Thanks. If I get little feedback, I'll just start my own thread...
Another question. Should I convert my footage to PAL before editing and? Or should I just edit in the native format (NTSC or HD) and then just convert after it's been edited? The latter is preferred since many of these edits I'll need in multiple formats anyways.

  • Macbook pro 13" won't install OS X 10.4 after harddisk erased and dvd will not eject!

After backing up the machine, I took what I thought was the correct installation disk and booted from the CD/DVD.  I erased the hard disk using the Disk Utility.  Then I tried to reboot to install the original operating system.  After several hours I received the message:  Cannot install Mac OS X on this machine.  The computer was running 10.4.3 before I erased it.  I don't understand why the restore to factory settings didn't work.  Now I have another problem.  The CD/DVD does not eject.  Without an operating system on the hard drive, it automatically boots from the CD/DVD and will not eject the boot disk!
What do I do?  How do I get the CD/DVD out?  How do I find a good disk

Hello, hold the mouse button down while booting up to eject it.
The original Disc would be gray.

  • Workflow for combining 3 DVD's to single DVD

    Hi all,
I have been trying to convert three individual DVD's of training seminars approximately an hour and a half each into a single DVD. These DVD's were made a while ago and there is no original data to work with. I have been trying to rip with handbrake to AVI, MP4, etc trying to get something that will go into DVD studio to make the new DVD.
I have tried running all the files that I produce into compressor however it will take many days to convert them all according to the system and my waiting 3 days already. Is there a workflow anyone else uses that would do this?
Quality is not too much of a concern as we know it's going to come out ****** anyway, we just need to combine everything to one disc. Thanks for the help!

Just so I'm clear. You want to combine 3 videos each 1.5 hr long onto a single disk - that is, generate a 4.5 hr project?
Even with a dual layer disk, that's a lot of stuff and the bitrate is going to have to go quite low ...
In any case, you are using the wrong tool. You want MPEG Steamclip to extract the files back into an m2v/ac3 format. Once there, they can be brought into DVDSP and a new menu created.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Can't erase (rewriteable) DVD using Disk Utility

I'm trying to erase a Maxell DVD +RW in my Mac Pro's SuperDrive, but when I click on Erase in Disk Utility (I've tried both Quickly and Completely, and both the drive and the disc itself) it just spins for 30 seconds, and then stops (with all the data still there).
I also downloaded PermanentEraser and dropped the disc icon into the app icon, but it also spun for a while but did nothing. I tried selecting all the files on the disc and manually dragging them to the Trash, but when I try to empty it I receive an error code of -61.
What's going on? Does DiskWarrior somehow create startup disks which can't be erased?

Hey, if you do that ... you can throw disk directly to the trash. if you used fast
erase option, you can only use disk utility !!! trying to that with others software make disk unusable.
when I started to use rewritable disks I did this mistake over more of 10 disks, before I understanded it. Toast warn you, when you use fast erase.

  • FCP6 1080i smartrendering workflow to a BDMV-DVD

Using this flowchart ( http://home.arcor.de/spamlos/hdv/hdv01.jpg ) I want to demonstrate my "FCP6 HDV 1080i smartrendering workflow" from logged HDV footage (Sony HC3) to a menu-free 001-BDMV-DVD, perfect playable as a AVCHD-DVD (mpeg2-1080i50 at 25MBit/s) on PS3 and other standalones. You get 40 minutes of finest and only smartrendered HDV material at a DL-DVD disc.
You need the win-freeware tool tsMuxeR Gui and Codeweavers Crossover (37 bugs).
Only effects, transitions etc. from the timeline are rendered. So you see: it is a very fast procedure. tsMuxeR Gui just remuxes (no reencoding). But important: tsMuxeR Gui accepts just a video-only-mov from FCP, the audio comes from a seperate file as it has to be dolby digital (ac3) format.
    Greetings
    Carsten

Well it must be 24 over 29.97 then because it is working with it.  I have been able to create timelines and export quicktime movies, etc.  The item properties (in FCE Browser) of the clips definitely say 23.98fps-- as I would expect because I know I had the camera set to 24p.  However, the frame rate of the sequences i've been editing on say 29.97.  This is without me having made any conscious effort to manipulate any settings for the sequences at the outset-- I didn't even know the sequences had settings for this when i started.  I just began dragging and dropping footage out of the browser and it must have automatically set the sequence to 29.97.  Who knows what I had the Easy Set up set to when i brought the footage over from my camera two years ago.  I knew even less then.  Are the settings on Easy Set up critical when bringing the footage onto your computer from your camera?  What processes are the Easy set up settings governing?
Even with all of that said, you would recommend burning the DVD as an NTSC?  An NTSC in a new PAL DVD player will look better than an NTSC burned as a PAL?  I suppose I could send them both versions and see which one looks better.
    Thanks for you help Tom.
    P.S.
On the true 24p issue, I did find this:
There are many posts out there about the Canon XH A1 not having "true 24p".
I think much of that misinformation out there maybe stemmed from (correct me if I'm wrong):
Canon Frame Mode on the standard DV cams was a "simulation: of the 24 frame look.
The Canon HDV 24p actually records each single frame progressively, but using an interlaced method.

  • Workflow for VHS to DVD conversion

I am bidding on a large scale project to convert 123 VHS tapes to DVD. This is to be done a one-to-one basis and each DVD would have a simple chapter menu system. The client also wants the chapters to be saved on a separate DVD or CD as WMV files.
I am soliciting help for suggestions on the most efficient workflow. I assume that the VHS tape is brought in to the computer using an A-to-D converter and made into a DV file. I propose to bring the DV file into FCP 5 and section it with chapter markers and export it to DVDSP. DVDSP would have a template to receive the file and I burn the DVD from here. I would then cut the FCP timeline into clips and batch export them with Flip4mac WMV. Renaming the files to match the chapter markers would take time.
Given the large number of tapes, does anyone have suggestions on how to speed up or automate the workflow? Maybe droplets, compressor or applescript. I would like burning and rendering to be done at night in a batch scenario. I am willing to spend some money.
    Thanks, Dan
    Powermac G5 Dual 2.7 gHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The customer wants menu's and WMV files so this ruled out the dedicated VHS to DVD burner approach. I was thinking that maybe DVDSP or FCP could be applescripted to automate the file export and rename (chapter marker names to file names). Could I line up a series of MPEG 2 rendering sessions for an overnight run using compressor and could this be scripted? How could I get all the mpeg2 or QT files lined up to do a batch run through iDVD or DVDSP.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
