Working mac is continious bleeping

Since a week or 3 my Imac is bleeping whenever the harddisk is put to work. Before this it was impossible to make a time machine copy, it would hang at a certain point. I recently did a disk utility scan which could not be finished (aborted by the system) as it was saying (translated from Dutch):
"Volume-information being checked
Wrong amount of free blocks on this volume
(Has to be 38684126 in stead of 38684119)
The volume 'Macintosh HD' is damaged and need to be repaired.
Error: this disk needs to be repaired. Restart system with another disk (like Mac OS X-installdisk) and use disk utility to repair this disk."
So I put the installdisk 1 in, but the Imac spits it out, refuses to start up in harddisk repair mode or any other mode at all. It just spits it out and starts as usual. Install disk 2 it doesnt spit out, but I can only open a read me file. Like said, the Imac works fine, except that it is guided by literaly hundreds of beeps in high and low, short and long. I feel like being at a supermarket having my items scanned. That is what it sounds like. It is quite vocal but annoying and seem to multiply every day. In the beginning it only did at start up just a few beeps, then it got more, and now it beeps also in sleep mode.
I cannot do a disk repair, also not with the latest OS X update (snowleopard, since Lion is not working on my 1GB drive). I do notice though that the difference in this error code is getting bigger, it used to be just one block difference, now it is 7.
Also I took the memory modules out yesterday and put them back in, as I heard this can also help get rid of the beeps. It did not solve anything at all.
I can't find anything on this problem on internet, because all beep related topics are about the error codes for the RAM drives. These are not the same sounds.
Another attempt was to install the cms program to avoid overheating fans. Also no improvement.
I hope anyone can help me.... I am not sure if my computer details will be shown here automaticaly but it is a early 2006 20" Intel Imac.
Thank you for your help, and please do not ask me too much computer language. I am not a geek, I know the basics but if I knew more I wouldn't need help fixing this ;-)

So I reinstalled Snowleopard recently (I cant run Lion as I don't have 2G ram) and the HD worked without problems according to the disk utility hardware test and for a while it helped. But not very late the bleeping came back. Followed by freezing, and loosing network when the Imac turned in sleeping mode.
Now this week it became worse, Firefox didnt work anymore. Yesterday everything frooze, closed programs stayed open but appeared closed in my dock. My HD drive was no more available. I did not exist anymore as a user nor administrator.
I tried to format my Imac but it could not find the HD drive, and the OS could not be installed as there was no source anailable. Also could not perform hardware test. After some trying I managed to open the Imac again, and could save some recent files. Also a hardware test, telling me there is a sibling link problem. I did the format now possible and the computer is completely clean, but still with some beeps. My problem now is that I cant connect to the internet via my airport express. My MacBook and Ipad work fine with the airport, which works perfectly, but my Imac cant find the Airport Express, nor does it connect via ethernet plug. I think there is a problem here with the airport card, since I can no way connect to the internet now, and also not to my MacBook via Airport. it sees my working internet connection once in a while, but the login 'times out'.
My question is how can I fix this problem? Or do I need to buy a new airport card? I think recent problems also were caused by network connections/airport card.
Maybe a long story. But i thought it may be helpfull to others one time encountering the same bleeps...

You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.

  • Cannot copy files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1

I'm having an issue copying files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1. Both machines are running OS 10.4.10 and have all of the available updates have been applied. When I connect to the Mac at work using ARD, I can see everything without any problems. However, when I attempt to copy a file onto my PowerBook desktop, I lose my connection to it and ARD tries to re-establish a connection and just keep looping. I'm stumped as to why this keeps happening. When I try the above from work using my PowerBook, there are no problems. Could this problem be related to my DSL Carrier (Verizon). Anyone have any ideas? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff thanks for that, the only problem is I cant update any of the system software at work
And I cant just copy the folders over and use my iPod as a hard drive to take them home and put them on my iTunes as the file names on some tracks are to long

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

  • Laptop crash with i tunes library. Have recently sync with my work mac but I am missing all my old songs.  Please help.   I tunes novice.

My laptop  crashed with mine and my husbands I tunes Library.  I have sync my i phone with my work mac but I am still missing some of my songs.
My husband was unable to do this as his i phone broke too and he has no music at all.
    Please help.

Apple devices are designed to sync with a single library. If you move the device to a new library iTunes will suggest wiping the device and reloading it with the contents of the library on the new computer, even if most of the content is identical. For an iOS device this process would also delete and reinstall any applications which would discard and settings or saved data associated with the apps. You probably don't want to do this.
Ideally you would have migrate the working library from the computer previously used to manage the device (the laptop) to the computer you now want to use (the desktop) before adding other new content into the new computer's library. That way the device would have easily moved from syncing with one machine to the other.
I'm not quite sure what the best next step is at this point. Does the desktop library sync with any other devices?

I have a work Mac, an air book, a home Mac; husband has desktop and laptop. That makes 5.  My work computer was replaced and I do not know what the company did with it.  I am not allowed to deauthorize all because I did this within the last year when I got my new airbook. Any way around the year limit?  I don't know if I can find my old computer and I don't want to wait months to be able to play my ituens purchases on my new work computer.

If oyu already used up your "deauthorize all" option, you need to contact support so they can make an excemption:

  • I have installed my iTunes account on works mac how can i now remove it?

I have a works mac book and i put my Itunes account on there. i am now leaving the company and need to hand back my Mac book and I cannot get rid of my account. What can I try next to remove it?

Your library and media are located in your Music folder in a folder called iTunes.  Delete the entire iTunes folder (and empty the trash).  If you want to transfer it to another computer, make sure you copy it to a temporary drive first.
Did you use this computer to sync an i-device such as a phone?

  • User error trying to FTP my work Mac

I know the various FTP settings are discussed at length and I promise I have tried all of the ones that look likely.
I am trying to access my work Mac from my iBook, the desktop has a fixed IP address and is connected to a wired router/adsl modem. I have enabled FTP in prefs and disabled the firewall and router's as well, port forwarding is set for 20, 21 & 22 to the Mac's local address.
Where am I going wrong? Help, please

Since you have control of both machines I would strongly suggest that you use SFTP which has the advantage of only using a single port (22), hence only a single forward on your router, as well as encrypting your traffic.
On your desktop you need to enable "Remote Login" which automatically activates SFTP.
On your iBook you will need to use an FTP client that supports SFTP - most modern ones do but Finder does not.

  • Problem conecting  and  file-sharing between two net-worked macs

I have a Mac Pro (in an out-building in my back-garden) and an Imac (in the house) connected by a long ethernet cable (must be at least 20 metres).
I used to have no trouble connecting one to the other till recently. I still usually have no trouble connecting to the Internet from the Mac Pro using the Imac's internet connection (wireless). The problem is in clicking on the Imac connection to open it in order to share files (also using "connect to server" in Go menu).
Much of the time (but not absolutely always), it refuses to connect, and I get a "failed connection message" (or something like "server does not exist" if using other method).
Sometimes, I can connect successfully, not just as a guest but after entering admin password, and then short time later the connection will disappear. When this happens, the Imac icon previously visible in the finder window also disappears. Unplugging and replugging the ethernet cable has no effect. Once I was using Itunes shared library to play a song on the Imac, and the song just suddenly disappeared.
Just now, after the Mac Pro-to-Imac conection failed again, I substituted my Ibook for the Imac in the house, and there was no problem at all connecting both ways between it and the Mac Pro. I then reconnected the Imac to the Mac Pro and it too connected fine. This proved at least that the ethernet cable was not at fault, but no doubt the problem will re-occur.
I have tried experimenting with the Firewall settings on the Imac, e.g. to "allow all incoming connections" or to "set access for specific services"( the latter is my usual setting on the Imac), but it made no difference. Also, the Ibook has no trouble at all connecting to the Imac when the Imac firewall is set to "specific services" so why should the Mac Pro have a problem (I admit I am a little uncertain about the best setting for the Firewall, but believe "specific services" to be correct).
File-sharing options in system prefs on the Imac are clearly properly set-up or there would never be any connection at all.
Often, although the Mac Pro to Imac connection will not work, the Imac to Mac Pro will, although not today, when the Mac Pro icon similarly was not present on the Imac.
As stated, I am pretty sure that all the time the internet connection from Mac Pro to Imac still works (Mac Pro shares Imac conection).
None of this appears to make much sense and am wondering if anyone has advice.

    Hi,
It might be me but I don't think I have fully understood the "My Name's iMac" bit.
If you mean (my Name) iMac as opposed to (My Name) iBook or Shed computer then that is a separate issue I will describe below
Does the "My Name" bit mean like mine does in this pic ?
As you can see I have used the Edit Button to change the Name of this G4 to RalphG4
In System Preferences > Network > (Connection method) > Advanced Button > WINS tab I see this on my G4
I have in fact used the same "Computer name" here (As in RalphG4)
My MacBook Pro has had the Netbois Name changed to Macbook Pro
It shows in the G4 Shares as that.
The Finder's Preferences are set to Display the Bonjour and SMB shares that I can see as I have a Mixed PC and Mac Network here
(Currently only the MacBook Pro is On as well)
SMB Shares are not on in the MacBook Pro settings so it shows as a Mac Server (Highlight and do a Get Info)
    Two Computers with Same Name
In Bonjour when two computers end up with the same name (As my two did originally) these double name issue cannot be resolved and the computer may be "Seen" briefly before it then disappears
I have not tried it with SMB shares on my two Macs having had issues with Bonjour.
(Note: iChat goes one step further.
Even if the computer names are different iChat uses the Name in the My Card spot in the Address Book to show as the Buddy Name in the Bonjour Buddy List.
It cannot resolve this if both computers are logged in as the same Person.)
Another reason why a computer may show up twice is how it or they are connected.
Lets say that all are connected to a router either by Wifi or Ethernet.
They will be then seen once.
If one computer is connected by Ethernet and Wifi at the same time then it will be shown twice as each appearance is linked to the Media Access Card it is using and the IP it uses for each connection.
This can also happen if one is linked directly to another with an Ethernet connection or Wifi whilst doing the other to the router.
Back to the naming thing again.
It is better to use the Edit Button (Arrowed in Blue above) (.Local Name) rather than trying to change the computer's Name (Ralph Johns's Computer) as this is less reliable in later versions of the OS.

  • Accessing work Mac from home

I currently work from home as a brand designer. I'm thinking of moving away (turning the home into a business and buying another home) - What's the best way to still have access to my main (work) Mac from home and what hardware is involved? I need to be able to work on the same files and not worry about having multiple versions on 2 different computers which will obviously create probs! Being a designer I work on large image files - something to bear in mind I think?
    Thx 4 any help.

The technical is easy. The practical is not. First the technical. Assuming that you will have an office LAN with your workstation, server, etc. the best method of connecting is a VPN. This is safe (read secure) and is generally pretty simple to set up. Assuming you have a Firewall/VPN in place, the cost to configure for your Mac should be trivial. On the high end, < $100 for a vpn client like VPN Tracker. Check your Firewall/VPN vendor for a Mac client. If they have one than no need to pay for a client. Other method include port maps but they are less secure and can result in system compromise when poor passwords are used.
But now for the practical. As a designer, you files are large. Attempting to open a Photoshop document across the internet is a exercise in pain and heartache. You would need a really fast connection (> 50 Mb/sec synchronous) on both ends and you still will be susceptible to loss of data and problems. (Recall that most LANs today are 1000Base (1000Mb/sec., and those that are not are 100). I would instead recommend doing a remote control of your work machine with ARD or Screen Share (VNC) or looking at Aqua Connect (http://www.aquaconnect.net/?page_id=26). The idea here is that your work machine remains running and you make a secure connection over VPN. Then you remote control your work machine and it is doing all the opening, saving, and communication with shared resources. All your home machine is doing is getting the screen updates.
    Hope that helps.

I have a PC at work and a couple of Macs at home. I plan on using my iPhone for both personal and work use. From a work perspective, I would like to get to email, contacts, calendar etc (they are all on outlook.
From a personal perspective, I am interested in bringing in my photos, music etc. from my mac. I guess it would be nice to pull ical and pers mail as well. I think that Mobile me is the solution. However, I wanted to get thoughts from other people.

  • Firewire port not working Mac Mini (G4 1.25ghz)

    Hi,
The firewire port isn't working on my mac mini, I've tried several devices, but none are connecting. I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue and possibly a solution. The only software installed on the computer since the firewire worked last was Apple updates, so maybe other mini's lost firewire somewhere along the way.
    Thanks, and Thanks
    W

This worked from Smokerz in the Power Mac G4 forum:
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
    Works fine now thanks Smokerz!!!!!
also repaired permission and reset PRAM, nothing worked until I did this.
