Worried about my battery life

Hi everyone,
I have a three month old MacBook Pro 13 inch i5 late 2011 model and my Full Charge Capacity (mAh) is currently 5347. So far, I have 34 cycle counts. Is this normal or should i be using my computer less ? Help!
Thanks!

your full charge capacity changes everyday......I get 5500 one day then 5600 the next, and today i'm at 5584.
you have a year's warranty in your Macbook and battery is covered....
if you're getting more than 5 hours use in a single charge, then you're fine...
if however, you are too worried about it, you can take it to Apple and have them diagnose your battery if you wish to do so..
suggestion - use your macbook normally and when you've got a couple of months left in your warranty, have your battery replaced...

It is perfectly fine to use the phone while charging it.

  • What about this battery life???!!!

Has anyone come up with an optional battery. Even with the Advanced Killer, my battery doesn't last an entire day. And I don't talk on the phone much at all for it to go dead like it does..Help!

The great one strikes again! I love my HTC extended battery. Not like we have tons if accessories to purchase with this phone. May as well enjoy life like me and not worry about battery life. I'm a heavy user on WiFi mostly. This battery will get my heavy use to the end of the day plus a pinch more. Just in time for Mr Phone to charge when I get my charge sleeping.

  • What can I do about my battery life?

Ok so I know that my iphone is really old. I bought it in 2009 and it has been a really good phone until about 6 months ago when the battery life went downhill. My phone will not hold a charge for more than 5 min. I will let it charge for a few hours and the battery will be full but when I take it off the charger, it takes 5 min for the phone to die. What can I do about this? I've tried restoring it to factory settings and that hasn't worked.

The battery is shot.Lithium batterys have a limited number of recharge cycles. Yours is shot. You would have to have it replaced.I personally don't think it would be worth the cost to replace it on a 3g,especially since you can get the 3gs for free with a new contract.

  • Mid-2013 Macbook Air: question about the battery life

First of all, I'm sorry if these questions have been already asked, I've looked around and I've seen some answers, but none that fit my specific case.
I have had this computer since December (Macbook Air, 13'', Mid-2013), I've been using it for a month now. At the beginning, I used to use it until my battery was low (between 10 and 20%) and then charge it. Then I learnt that it's better to keep it plugged as much as possible (I have read this in other discussions and on the Apple page). The problem is that my battery is no longer a 100% of its capacity according to Cococnut Battery. It started with 99%, then back to 100%, then 98, 97... and now it varies from 97 to 98 (right now it says that my computer's current capacity is 6948 mAH). I don't know if this is normal, or if this is caused by the use I used to give to my macbook air at the beginning or by any other thing. I also have 19 loadcycles already. Besides, I have noticed that sometimes it jumps form 100% to 99% of battery pretty fast when I don't have it plugged, and I'm not sure if that happened before.
This is my first time dealing with a macbook and I don't know how these things are supposed to work, and I'm worried my battery might have any kind of problem and that's why itdoesn't have full capacity anymore, since I've been using it for only a month.
Also, sometimes it takes a little while to shut down. It usually takes 2 seconds, but sometimes it takes longer, maybe 20 seconds (first the screen turn white, then the loading icon appears and then it finally shuts down). Is this normal too for macbook airs?
    Thanks for the help!

Those are only averages, for purposes of the battery 97 98 99 and 100 are the 'same thing'........theyre all estimates.
Normal on shut down, sometimes you can see a few seconds, sometimes 10, 15 seconds shut down.....depends on what and HOW much its shutting down before poweroff.   Normal.
    ON BATTERY USE:
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW  & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.    As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
*However if you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode       (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above:   “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”.
This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace

  • Worried about overheting battery

    Hey all,
i just got a pro recently and was wondering as i dont carry it around too much but use it alot, is it safe for me to ake the battery out but use the mag safe to keep it running? do i risk damaging anything? has anyone done this or any apple geniuses recommended this method to help reduce the notebok from overheating??
i would appreciate any advice that is safe for the notebook to keep it runing and reduce unnecessary heat and cycles of recharge and discharging of the battery, as it aint necessary to run it off the battery all the time

Keep in mind it is a pointless and totally unneccesary method which accomplishes only two things - your computer is running on half speed and the battery starts to discharge vs. staying nice and healthy and topped up.
They sell it with the battery so use it with the battery. Just like with all the temperature questions this is the same sort of thing, ignore 2000 engineers and go out on a new path.

    Hi,
It's certainly fine to run the notebook on just the AC Adapter.
Regarding the battery, once a month, reinsert the battery, start the machine and let the battery fully charge.  Unplug the AC Adapter and let the machine run until you start to get a 'low battery' warning.  Fully charge it again, then let the battery drain to around 40%.  Shut down the notebook, remove the battery and store it seperately in a cool location.  Repeating this procedure every month will help to keep your battery in good condition.

  • New Mid-2013 macbook air BATTERY LIFE decreasing fast?

    Hi,
I just bought a new Macbook Air 13" 256GB , 4GB RAM. I'm worried about my battery life. With only 2 hours of just surfing the net and on 50% brightness, my battery life dropped to 60%. So every 30 minutes, it drops by 10%. I also found that my computer usage is 95% idle so how can my battery life waste so quickly??
my battery health is 100%. Is that even normal for a Macbook Air that is only 5 days old?
    Thank you!

I had the battery problem. I upgraded the to iOS 5.0.1 last night and at least that problem seems to have been fixed. However, the problem with no audio on phone calls remains. Have not tried swapping the SIM card yet. The ATT guy says that they have resolved 90% of the no audio issues with a new SIM card. Not sure athat what has to do with anything but will try that first before requesting a replacement phone.

  • Question about battery life

    Hi everyone,
I got my refurbished MBP 13" mid 2010 model two Friday's ago (July 16) from the Apple online store and I have some questions about the battery life....
Immediately after I got it, I followed all the battery calibration instructions from apple.com/batteries (and did it again after it because I was unsure if I did it properly). While it was charging, I was installing some recommended applications, one being coconutBattery. In the additional information section, it said that my MBP was 7 weeks old, has gone threw 10 battery load cycles, and had a original battery capacity of 97%. I am now at 17 loadcycles, with 94% original battery capacity.
Now to how much time I get with the battery... I have done some testing of my own, such as watching some movies (Tron and Star Trek First Contact, I'm a geek :D), basic web browsing (5 tabs open, reading blogs, watching a couple of 3 minute youtube videos) and listening to an audio book (iWoz) with a tab or two open. The best battery life I have gotten (basic web browsing) was 5 1/2 hours, with 60% LCD brightness, keyboard backlight off, and bluetooth off, with just Chrome and coconutBattery open.
Is this the average battery life for everyone else? I bought this because of its supposedly good battery life, and though I am very happy with my purchase, I just want to make sure that I have a fully working MBP.
    Some other notes:
The battery meter next to the clock sometimes says that 98% is fully charged (I think it is just a glitch)
The estimated battery life is between 9-11 hours when brightness is at 30%-40%, airport and bluetooth is off, and keyboard backlight is off when I am doing text editing.
    Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Forgot to say I have the 2.4ghz 250gb model.

  • How to prolong U410 battery life?

    Hey guys,
Just bought a IdeaPad U410 a few days ago. I have tested the battery life, and it was pretty decent after uninstalling Smart Update (5 - 6 hours of casual use).
However, because of my previous experience of using Acer and Toshiba laptops, I worry that the battery life will shorten very quickly if I keep charging it. How do you guys deal with this problem? Is it possible to still get 5 - 6 hours of battery after, say, 1 year of owning this laptop?
(And I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I really don't know anything about computers, haha)
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Please open energy management, go to battery settings and check optimize for lifespan. This will charge the laptop less than its capacity but the battery life would increase drastically.

  • IPad 2 battery life

Hi, I got my iPad 2 yesterday and I love it. I'm worried about the battery though. Every 3 to 4 minutes or so it goes down one percentage point. That will leave me at about 5h, nowhere near 10h. I decreased brightness. I'm surving and sometimes downloading an app. Not even watching any movies or playing games. Should I be worried?

    ChefJoseph wrote:
It does sound odd. Make sure "push" in Mail is off. Also, whenever an app asks you if it can use "Push" say NO. Drain the battery completely and re-charge. Do this once a month. Also, make sure your Bluetooth is off (if you don't use it)
You DO NOT need to cycle the battery every month. They are Lithium Ion and do not have memory like NiCad or Nickle Metal Hydride.
In fact that can shorten the life of the battery.
"Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid frequent full discharges and charge more often between uses. If full discharges cannot be avoided, try utilizing a larger battery. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery."

  • Battery Life... was it shortened by....

Ok, here's the story. My MacBook fans were running constantly for about two weeks until I finally figured out that there was a CPU process that was driving the processors crazy. As an FYI, the activity monitor is a great tool that I just read up on! WOW... it was a phony print job that was driving the processors crazy! I took advice from this forum and quit the culprit process.
I am worried that the battery life is going to be affected negatively from the fact that the fans and heat were wearing it out much faster than normal. Is there something to worry about?

Your probably OK. Were you running off the battery or using the power supply?

  • Worried About  New 13inch Macbook Pro

    Hi guys,
just upgraded to a MBP from the white macbook. Till now I am loving it but I am worried about two things.
The battery of my new model (3 days old) is no where close to the claimed 8hrs. While I understand that 8hrs is just a claim and mostly in standby mode but I am still worried about my battery.
My iSat pro shows its health 97% (yesterday it was 96) on 3 charge cycles.
Also I get an estimate of 3 - 4 hrs battery time when I browsing on Safari, using iTunes, and full brightness and keyboard lit. Is that normal? My white macbook use to give me the same charge in good old days.
Have I got a bad battery?
I am new to the glass mousepad and taken aback by its slow response. I dont know if its a snow leopard bug or my trackpad is faulty. Sometimes double and right clicking doesnt happen and i have to tap hard.
Also another peculiar problem is that if I have to shut a window or a tab in safari, sometimes when I click on the "X" nothing happens. I have to try it a couple of times or minimise it and then shut it. Its quite irritating. Can some one pls tell me why this problem is arising?
    Thanks

    Hi Tanya,
My iSat pro shows its health 97% (yesterday it was 96) on 3 charge cycles.
Anything above 95% is quite fine for a new battery. This number will go up, down, sideways, etc. all the time. It is not a very accurate measurement of battery condition. If you have not yet calibrated your battery do that and see what it says.
The full brightness on your display and keyboard are what is killing your battery life. The display is the single largest power draw on a notebook computer (by far!!). If you dim it down to 50% of lower you should see at least an hour or 1.5 hours added to your time estimate.
As for the trackpad, I think something is wrong. Have you adjusted the tracking speed and double click speed in System Preferences? My Late 2008 trackpad is speedy and responsive. I never even click it; I just use tap to click.
