Worst case scenario: Dead HDD, no backup. What can I do?

Hello,
So today was not a good day. My Macbook's HDD just upped and died, for no apparent reason. It was working as normal, shut down, it hangs, I restart, and I see a "?" and if I put my ear very close to the Macbook, I can hear faint clicking repeatedly. I took it to the Apple store and my nightmare was confirmed.
Here's the thing: they won't get the replacement HDD until Wednesday, and they offered to attempt to get the data off my old HDD for $150. I said no, thinking I had made backup DVD+R's at home. Turns out, I really didn't
At this point, I would indeed have them try to salvage my data for $150, but the HDD is sitting here right next to me, and if I shake it I can hear something rattling around. I have memories of a broken spindle arm of a iPod. I'm thinking that this is not salvageable.
What do you guys think? I have until Wednesday, as they told me once the new HDD comes in, I have to give them the old one back. Can Apple indeed do it? What if they can't? Anyone else?

Hi, sorry to hear about your problem. There are several ways you can try and recover your files. One way is to purchase a utility like DataRescue 2 that may be able to recover your information. The other is like was said before, have apple or someone else try and do it for you at a high price. One way that you may not have heard or tried (its very old) is to remove the hard drive from the macbook and put it in ziplock bag (make sure its well sealed) and then put the bag in you freezer for a while. Then remove the bag, and reinstall your hard drive, restart and try to copy the data from it to another hard disk. Worst case scenario for spam update error

hi friends
i need to know what is the worst case scenario if our support package stack update(SPAM) process fails. I am asking this question because we dont have a DR system.I mean we dont have test server to check our restore & recovery. We have ECC 5.0 and our SPAM updates are long overdue. I need to convince the management to prioritize this activity and my boss thinks that since we dont have test server if anything goes wrong then we might have to restore the db which he is not in favor of.

Hello Nathan,
Very first you need to convince your management that since you didn't had the Support package update in your system actually you are not having the latest corrections available in the system. As per Best practise you should keep the systems to the latest available support package levels.
Now, to your question.Support package update is a easy but critical activity. Easy because it is bit effortless and critical because major changes are involved with the corrections. UPdate for BASIS support package can bring your system to HIghly unstable state (I am just talking about Worst case scenarios) as they update the system basis tables. Application component packages if aborted due to some errors can have problems in the business cycles.
So anyways you'll have to keep proper backup of your system available just to make sure if, by chance you are not able to complete the SP update under the given downtime window you should have the possibility to restore and release the systems to the business users.
This will not be the new thing you'll be doing as majority of the customers don't have DR server to the rescue.
You can discuss with your team and decide a suitable backup strategy.

If I get this right, you've ported your phone number to AT&T with the purchase of the iPhone. That is considered opening your own account under your name. Your brother's account is not ported to AT&T unless you used his SS# instead of yours. Your brother still has his account under Verizon Wireless, all you did was use your cell phone number to when you opened your own AT&T account.
If you don't want to use your Verizon Wireless phone #, my suggestion is to call AT&T customer service and explain that you want a new phone number instead of the ported Verizon number.

Number of System Log Errors Increasing During Nightly Backup - What Can Be Done?

Right now, I'm getting quite a number of warnings and errors with my nightly (wbadmin) backups to external USB drive using Windows 8.1 and the Spring Update. Fortunately, the VSS-integrated system image backups are still sound, but it seems as though
Windows 8.1 is becoming less and less aware and tolerant of them. That's not right!
With Windows 8.1 before the Spring Update I was seeing the warnings, but not the FilterManager errors. The update brought the errors.
Perhaps not too many Windows 8 users use wbadmin start backup -vssFull commands to do their backups, but I'm sure a lot of folks running Server 2012 do.
What can be done to make the backup process smoother and eliminate these warnings and errors?
Here's the specific list of warnings / errors I got from last night, which started at 2:00am and ran to 4:26am:
As usual, clicking the Event Log Online Help button yields: "We're sorry, but the page you requested could not be found. You can search on TechNet for more information." Microsoft, you know that needs to be fixed too, right?
The specific command I'm using, via the Task Scheduler, is:
wbadmin start backup -allCritial -vssFull -quiet -backupTarget:G:\
For those who might suggest 3rd party backup, bear in mind I very much want the VSS integration that Windows Backup provides, and while wbadmin is producing backups that can actually be restored I can ignore these warnings and errors. But it would
be nice to not have them.
And yes, I've considered 3rd party backup solutions, but while wbadmin is producing VSS-integrated system image backups that can be restored from the Windows startup recovery environment I'd prefer those.

The errors suddenly stopped on their own, but the warnings continue.
As with most software issues, the errors came back again, specifically after a reboot mandated by yet another Windows Update. I'm assuming they stopped before because the Filter Manager just gave up, or maybe the volume numbers got too high (notably
the volume numbers started over again at a lower number).

Couple of things you can try.
Make sure your windows firewall and anivirus are turned off.
Second, think about what apps you may have loaded. In prior posts really long or interrupted back ups were tied to apps that had an unusually large or messed up data content. Like comic book or magazine readers. Somme of those apps just do not work great in the backup world.
If the pad is new, and you do not have a lot of stuff on it, you can skip,the backup step entirely by clicking the little x in the process window in i tunes. Before you start the process, though, make sure up have transferred your purchases to i tunes. ( i tunes, at the top, under the file drop down), and import any pictures into iphoto, or whatever photo library you are using. Then start the process. When it gets to the backup set, click the x, and the pad will go on and sync.
When i had the same problem, deleting the suspected bad app, and a successful sync without backup cured it.

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.<br />
You may need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Worst case scenario backup?

I have a general question about backing up my files. I currently have an external hard drive connected to my iMac. I keep my work files on my internal hard drive and time machine backs them up to my external hard drive which is always connected. If I ever had a lightning strike (which my neighbor just had), I would most likely lose both in one shot. Of course I'm also using a surge protector on that outlet, but really don't know how reliable those are with lightning. With approx. 20 gb of files, is iCloud storage a better option? Since these files are constantly edited, would that take forever to keep uploading revisions?

With SugarSync you can select any folders on your Mac to sync. It does block-level incremental uploading which makes uploading changed files a very quick process. Changes to the folders are automatically detected while the program is running and uploaded - a remarkably quick process as only the individual blocks of a file which has changed are uploaded
It doesn't have a background process: you leave the application running (it appears in the menu bar) - the Preferences give you the choice of having it run automatically at startup. It's received good reviews: I've been using it and found it's flexible and easy to use; it would be my choice of the available methods.

This is useful in case of a disaster like a fire or a lightning strike, but you would also be advised to do local backups, particularly as there is a practical limit to the amount of data you can reasonably store online. A clone is useful as you can boot up from it if the internal disk fails: if you want to be ultra-cautious you could alternate two and keep one off-site.

okay my old computer had itunes,but now its gone.everything was wiped out.no more itunes,and i didnt have any of my songs,photos,videos backed up. my ipod still has everything in it (thank god) and i just downloaded itunes a couple of minutes ago. Now i changed the settingss so tht itunes wouldnt automatically sync the emmpty library with the ipod. and im trying to drag and drop the files from my ipod to the library,but it wont let me. Is there i can do this,or am i stuck this way?

But yamiPod probably works the same way. The utility probably asks for a location to put the files. Select a place that you can easily access later, in your hard drive. Let the utility do it's thing and copy the files to that location.
Once it is done, spot check the location to confirm the files are there. Then run iTunes. First, go to preferences Advanced tab to check two things. The checkbox for +Keep iTunes Music folder organized+ should be checked, as well as the one for +Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library+. If those options are checked, when you add the songs to the iTunes library, iTunes will make a copy and put it into your designated +iTunes Music+ folder AND organize the song files by Artist and then by Album. iTunes will access the copied music files from the +iTunes Music+ folder going forward.
To get the songs files into your iTunes library, open a Windows Explorer (or My Computer) window to show the location where yamiPod placed the files. Drag the folder with all the files from that window and drop it onto an open iTunes window; drop it onto the main pane that shows your Music LIBRARY. iTunes should look for all the music files in that folder and put them into your iTunes library (as well as copy the files to your +iTunes Music+ folder).
Once iTunes finishes, you should spot check your +iTunes Music+ folder to makes sure the files are there. You can also do a +Get Info+ on a few random songs, and make sure their files are stored in your +iTunes Music+ folder.

Accidently disconnected ipod without ejecting, now it only shows recent purchases. I can see 40 gig of original library but its listed as other not audio. Is this retrievable audio data or is it lost. I have no backup what can I do to restore my ipod?

I accidently disconected my ipod from my pc. When I plugged it back up I only had limited access to my library. I had over 40gb of audio data that now when I go to the summary page of my pod it shows up as other, only the audio that I have recently purchased from itunes is accessible. Is the 40gb retrievable and can some one please tell me step by step what I need to do. My collection took over a year to put together and there is no backup file.

"Other" is the measure of used space on the iPod not taken up by Audio, Video & Photos. This includes the iPod's library and artwork plus any files you may have copied to your iPod in disk mode. The overhead for the library & artwork data is typically 1-2% of the size of the media, e.g. for 1Gb of Audio & Video expect to have around 15mb of "Other". This information is needed for the iPod's operation and cannot be removed.
If you have significantly larger amounts of "Other", not related to files you've intentionally placed on the iPod, then these are probably disconnected copies of your media files or iPod libraries left over from failed sync operations. The only way to recover the space is to do a full restore.
If you have copies of all your media in your iTunes library this isn't a problem, but if you've been manually managing the content then you might need to try to recover the files from it first. See this post by forum regular Zevoneer on transferring files from the iPod to your computer. Some of the tools rely on the iPod having a healthy library however the manual method mentioned towards the end of the post should work regardless.

Backing up your iPad won't change what is stored on your iPad, and you can't put TV programmes into the cloud - they will only show there whilst the TV company has them for sale in your country's store.
How did you download them onto you iPad e.g. via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app or syncing, or do you have videos in the cloud showing (Settings > iTunes & App Store > Videos 'on') and tapped on a cloud TV programme in the Videos app ? If the former then you should be able to delete them directly in the Videos app, either via the Edit button on the TV programme selection screen, or by selecting the series and swiping across the episode from right to left. If the latter then do they show in Settings > General > Usage > Videos (under the 'Storage' heading) ? If they do then you should be able to delete them by swiping across them from right to left.

Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process should remain on your computer.
Although photos/videos in the Camera Roll are included with the iPhone's backup, photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer ASAP as with any other digital camera and especially before installing an iOS update. If not imported by your computer and no backup was done prior to installing the update, the photos are gone.
All iTunes content on the iPhone should be in your iTunes library on your computer. If not, check this link.

Update: An Apple rep called me today to update the status of my return. I was told that the replacements for the BLACK iPad 2's was still another 3 weeks out (at least) so they offered me a brand new WHITE 16GB iPad 2. I could have that or continue waiting. I opted to go ahead and accept the offer of a new white one. Worst case scenario if I don't like the white one I have buddy that just bought a 16GB black one that he would be willing to swap it.
