Writing a Compressed AVI File in NI LabWindows/CVI with the IMAQ Vision Acquisition

I'm still facing some problems when I try to save pictures from a GigE Vision camera into a compressed avi-file in a LabWindows/CVI application on Windows7.
The task is to grab images from the camera with 30 fps to monitor a process, evaluate the grabbed pictures to find certain characteristics of the monitored process and save them in an avi-file to have the possibility to load and evaluate them once again Offline if necessary.
My questions: which compression filters can I get with the NI-Imaq Vision Acquisition and Vision Development Runtime 2012 SP1? Is a mpeg4 codec available to compress quickly and effective? Can I use a third party codec or only the ones delivered with NI-Vision?

The encoding algorithm, or codec, that's used for compression needs to present on your system. When I had done some research on this sometime back, I found that if your custom codec could align with the DirectShow architecture, then your codec would work with IMAQ AVI functions.The codecs that are available may vary from system to system, depending on what software is currently installed. AVI is a legacy file container originated by Microsoft back in 1992 and which has not been officially supported for more than a decade. Like the container, many of the codecs commonly used to create AVI content are also "legacy" compression formats most often supported on PC/Windows platforms. In fact, some codecs have never been transcoded for Mac use. Of those that have, many never made the transition to Mac OS X or the transition to Intel-based platforms. Those codecs that are still supported on the Mac can normally be found in the avi to quicktime converter available as an online download. While some common AVI compression formats may be supported by the QT X Player app, QT 7 currently provides a more compatible AVI playback environment for most "legacy" compression formats. If the codec(s) used in your AVI files are not supported by the avi to quicktime converter for QT use, you can try the VLC media player which may still support more esoteric compression formats. If VLC does not support the files, the normal approach is to discover which specific audio and/or video codecs were used to create the file and perform an Internet search to see if a compatible Mac component is available for download.

What happens when you drag it?
Make sure the drive you are moving the files to has enough available space to receive the file:
Click on the movie file and go to File > Get Info and note the "size"
Check the drive to which you are moving the file to make sure it has enough available space: https://idisk.me.com/madisonfile-Public/web/finder-drive-available-space-and-for mat.html
Also note the format of the drive you are copying too. If it is not Mac OS Extended or FAT (not recommended unless you are taking it to a windows computer) then that may be the issue.

PDF File Generation in LabWindows/CVI

Hi,
I'm looking for ideas on how to automatically generate multiple-page PDF documents in LabWindows/CVI.
The pages consist of images of panels that have automatically updated some graphs.
Any ideas?

Howdy Kirk,
Great question. You might try one of these four options:
Install a "PDF Printer" in Windows. This is essentially a virtual Windows printer that we can print to in CVI using functions like PrintPanel, PrintTextFile, etc.
Find a commandline PDF creator and call the commandline application from CVI. (See the launchexe.cws example located in the Example Finder under Comm w/External Apps » OS)
Find a DLL you can call to create a PDF. (See the examples located in the Example Finder under Comm w/External Apps » Using External Code)
Install a PDF creator and communicate with it through ActiveX if it has an ActiveX server.
Sorry I can't provide a specific recommendation for PDF software for these suggestions, but I hope it gets you going in the right direction!

Make a file extension to open always with the same app

Hello, do you know how can I make a file extension to open always with the same app. So far I have been doing it by double click > open with > other > and then mark open always with this app, BUT
I do not want to do this very time with all the same file extension I have in my hard disk, is there any way, like in windows, to select and preset a determined app to always open all files with the same extensión in my hard disk??
Actually what I´m experiencing and would like to change is to open always .pdf extensión with Acrobat and not with Preview

Hi Everyone,
I cannot open Word File because "there are problems with the contents" unspecified error; Location: 2. Please help as I need this doc for work meeting this morning. Nothing special about this doc but links were copied into it??? However I do that all the time. I have never had this happen before. I am on a 2010 machine. I just ran a disk permissions repaired and emptied the trash but still no dice. I had several other word docs up as well when I got up this morning but they are all fine. I do not have Time Capsule turned on (which I need to do but that will be another thread/question).

wmv is a Windows Media format. I don't know why Realplayer is coming into it since that deals primarily with Real format files and maybe a few generic formats.
You need
Free Flip4mac QuickTime player components - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
After installation a new Flip4Mac pane will appear in System Preferences. Make sure you set the boxes to ensure that it will play WMV files in Quicktime.
or play the files with VLC
VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.
While you're at it you might install:
Perian codecs for Quicktime - http://www.perian.org - plugins to add functionality to Quicktime for playing additional audio and video formats
Quicktime audio problems, Perian, VLC - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9013669 - read note about uninstalling prior DIVX support before installing Perian.
Perian doen't do WMV but it's handy to get many things to play in Quicktime.
Note, if these are protected WMV, nothing on a Mac will play those (unless you also have Windows installed).

That is a Disk Utility image. You can find Disk Utility in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder on your hard drive.

Separated trace file which I can read with the log viewer

I tried it with the Filelog.
The Problem is that it logs to the file (its not problematically) but also to the defaulttrace
and thats not my preferred solution.
Do you have any other ideas?

I have an application on 4 computers. On 3, PDF files open as they should, withing the application. On the fourth the file is placed in "downloads" and then opens in a separate tab on the desktop(not inside the application).

It happens whether the application starts in IE11, Google Chrome or Firefox.
This happens whether the "client" signs in over the internet or directly to the local host server.

Additionally, when trouble shooting, and you disable iTunes Match on an iOS device you cannot simply re-enable it immediately. You must launch the Music app and let the content clear out before re-enabling the service.

The only way is to reduce the length or the size or the quality with a video editor. Probably all three. Usually, video files are too big for email. You should find a different method of transferring it.

Compress avi file to be placed on webpage

I have a 50 mg avi movie taken from my canon still photo camera and it's in iphoto that I would like to compress to send to a webpage for family to view. Any ideas?

Ok I think I copied the .avi file into iTunes, but what do I do in "advanced tab"?

You don't necessarily need the Pro upgrade.
(Did the kkirkster actually write that?)
New to iTunes 6.0.2 is a feature that allows your to
"Convert to iPod".
Look under the "Advanced" menu after adding the .avi
to your iTunes Library.
If the file plays properly in iTunes it should also
convert to .m4v format that can be used in a properly
formatted Web page.
