Writing in an active joblog

Hi,
I start a program X in batch mode.
All messages from the program are visible in the joblog.
The program calls a functionmodule.
Messages within the function module are not visible in the joblog.
Now I'm looking for a way to make these messages also visible in the joblog.
But this should work in "realtime" like ist works within the program X.
This means: Everytime I refresh the joblog I will see the new messages.
Any idea ?

Writing a custom RMI Activator process

Hello Group,
I am in the process of implementing a custom RMI activation scheme, in which remote Activatable objects will be hosted in a custom EXE process, instead of the standard Java.exe/Javaw.exe. I intend to use JNI to create the JVM in this custom EXE process and then load Java classes. I have used JNI to create JVMs in native processes before, but have no experience writing custom RMI activation systems.
Has anyone attempted this before, and knows if there are any gotchas that I should know early on?

I have a breakthrough. I am able to host a simple RMI server inside a custom EXE. All I do is inside the main of a Win32 EXE, create the JVM and use JNI to call the ‘main’ of a Java class I wrote below.
This class runs (some undocumented) code to bootstrap the RMI machinery. Hereafter my EXE process process remains alive and is available to service RMI requests. Using this approach, I wouldn’t need to recompile java.c inorder to rename it as long as my custom JNI code is able to parse in all the VM options passed in by RMID in order to create the JVM.
I was missing the crucial step of calling back into rmid (the Activator) and registering the newly created group, only after which would rmid start creating instances of the remote object. Your advice that I carefully read the spec helped!

MBP 15" Battery Suddenly Draining Fast.

Hi.
So my MBP 15" has always had a decent battery, the usual lengths based on average usage.
Today it suddenly started discharging really fast. 10% in 30 minutes when doing nothing but web browsing over wifi with screen at half brightness. It went down 78% this afternoon with just web browsing, a couple of youtube videos and a little bit of music, normally this would not make much of a dent.
(Note, it has gone down 3% just writing this message)
Activity monitor is showing no rogue processes running and spotlight hasn't been indexing.
The Machine is a 15" 2011 MBP 2.0Ghz Core i7, 4GB RAM, High Res display, 720rpm HDD. Running OSX Lion 10.7.2. I'm sure that is more info than you need, but just in case.

Activity Monitor won't show a rogue processes unless you change its "Show" window from the default of "My Processes" to "All Processes" as in this example:
Have you done that?
Do you have the Windows emulator "Parallels" installed. There is an issue with it that can cause the Dock to use 100 percent of the processor cycles. Parallels does not have to be runing for this to happen; the culprit is apparently one of that programs background processes. It can be fixed with a patch provided by the developer here:

Are you running anti-virus or internet security software? The expensive commercial versions can really drag down performance.

Nested Parameters Dates dependant on earlier parameter-Crystal Reports

I am writing a production Activity report which combines Production orders, purchase orders and MRP run recomendations.
The user has to select the MRP scenario and then a start and end date range for the report. The date range must be within the start and end date for the chosen MRP scenario.
I can create the first parameter
name: MRPScen@select AbsEntry,MsnCode from OMSN
This happily allows the user to select the MRP scenario.
Now I want to select a start date using the AbsEntry returned from the parameter above to return the startdate and end date for that record in OMSN.
My current parameter is
StartDate@select Startdate from OMSN
but this allows the user to select a date from a different MRPscenario.
I have tried the name below, but it also does not work.
StartDate@select Startdate from OMSN where AbsEntry=MRPScen@select AbsEntry,MsnCode from OMSN
Idealy I would like it to select the start date from the scenario and then allow the user to change it to any day up to the EndDate
Any ideas please

you say tokens only work for key fields. By that do you mean they have to be a database primary key or do secondary keys also work for tokens? Also do multi field keys also work? Is the token name the key field name followed by the @?
Also do you know how to make a hierarchy of parameters work
eg select country is 1st parameter
second parameter is state where it will only select valid states for the country chosen
third parameter is area where the area belongs to the state chosen.
In each case no option is available that is invalid. If the country is USA then only USA states can be selected from the drop down, states in Australia for example are not visible etc.

MBP losing large downloads no matter what connection.

I have two MBP's, one for my wife and myself. mine, when i try to download a file larger than probably 200-300mb it stops and i get an error:
"/Users/ryanmckibben/Desktop/BengalsVideo1.mpg.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator."
now i have tried from several different sites, including my own server and get the same thing. my wifes MBP same OS(latest snow leopard), same browser version, everything, works fine, my 4 yr olds dell laptop, works fine. so its not the internet connection, its not the servers, its something specific with my computer specifically.
this happens on any browser, safari, firefox latest beta, and chrome for mac.
so its not the browser

its not the source file server.
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
i have tried the following:
reboot, cleared, cache/browser files, checked for any updates, disabling IPv6 off and on and auto setting, repaired disk permissions, downloaded onyX and no issues found with that...
im lost at this point... doesnt make much sense...
i have used 5 different wireless and hardwired networks over all, same exact result with each...
it worked 2-3 times over the last 6 weeks total... and it was on smaller files.. like 400mb.. but every single other time it errors out... and if i try those same files again, it errors out too..
im lost here...

Directory issues can be manifested in all sorts of ways, FNNSports. Big files often have large extents files to keep track of the location of all the "fragments' on the drive. These can become problematic at times when small files don't demonstrate problems. It is actually a good idea to run Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" in this fashion every month or two anyway as part of basic maintenance. It can stop a host of problems developing over time. You should also do it after ANY system or application crash.
One of the reasons I suggested also looking at the "SMART Status' of the drive (and ideally using SMART Utility" to check it too), though, was that I found myself wondering whether your HD is suffering from physical problems causing difficulties with prolonged data writing events causing some heat build up or some such.
Checking the directories and the drive's physical status is an important first step whenever you run into problems with file writing or reading activity of the kind you mention.

Shadow Database for Hot Standby

Hi,
Our company uses embedded Oracle10g Standard and Enterprise Editions. The Oracle database schemas drive real-time applications; such as VoIP, etc. We need to shadow our applications and Oracle database to a failover server.
We identified several methods to make and maintain a hot standby copy of an embedded Oracle database; including Data Guard, Oracle9i Replication, Streams, Recovery Manager, RAC, etc.
Can you recommend a light weight, easy to implement, low cost solutions to making and maintaining a shadowed Oracle10g database? The replication is one way, writing from the active database to the standby, without check points, roll backs or any other features.

it looks to me that in order to satisfy the recovery time and affordable data loss requirements you could use either of two products - RAC or DataGuard.
1. The RAC - comes with Standard edition for free, comes with Enterprise Edition at extra cost (awkward, isn't it?)
pros -
will allow you automatically recover in matter of seconds from failure of the node with zero data loss. will allow you automatically distribute the workload among the clustered nodes.
cons - there is a single point of failure - the shared storage where cluster keeps the data.
Also you should purchase the additional Oracle database license for the second (third,..) cluster node. Well, not in every configuration. I belive if you use user-based licensing model then clustered configuration will be no different from single node configuration in terms of costs. If you use the CPU based licensing model - you can split your licenses among the clustered nodes - for example if you've purchased 4 CPU licenses you can install 2 node cluster with dual-CPU servers. You have to make sure that dual-CPU server will sustain the load in case of failure of one node. In this case to feel safer you can purchase quad-CPU servers , but allow Oracle to run only on two CPUs on each node - in case of failure just change the affinity mask of the oracle process to let it use the extra 2 CPUs.
2. DataGuard - comes with EntEd. at no extra cost, is not available with standard edition.
you can setup Dataguard for zero loss configuration. the switchover time - probably would be closer to minute than to 5 seconds
pros - doesn't require shared storage thus eliminates the single point of failure. does not require extra licensing costs - the second node is always in mounted state (unless you want to use it for read-only query processing).
cons - near real-time recovery (compared to real-time of RAC). Requires double storage (to keep the standby database). Requires the extra standby server which is not fully used in production until the failure. Also there are limitations if you are using the direct-path inserts.
Oracle vison for high availability is to use RAC where you wnat to be protected against failure within a site and use DataGuard to protect yourself against the site failure.
Other solutions (Replication,Streams) will require you to change your application to incorporate the failure detection and switching logic.

Passing Action T as Argument to CodeActivity produces Build failure

Hi I have a simple Activity that attempts to execute an Action:

I tried to use that activity and passed parameters like:

The workflow designer does not show me any errors. But when I try to build that workflow, I get the error:
"A lambda expression with assignments cannot be converted to an expression tree." and the workflow won't build.
We have similar activities that use InArgument<Predicate<T>> that work without a problem. Is this wanted behavior - or is there a workaround to execute a lambda with assignments within an activity?
What we're trying to achieve is writing an Save Activity that opens a session, and then saves the desired values and commits that session.
We are using Workflow Foundation with .Net 4.5.

thank you for your answer - so I take it that it's simply not supported to pass lambda expressions with assignments to workflows.
Which is sad. Maybe you can point us to another direction. What we wanted to achieve is a "multiple assign" activity. What it should do:
Open a session
Execute multiple assigns on an object
Commit session
We had several attempts with a custom assign activity (there is one in the WF Samples Download - but that was a very limited example
WF_WCF_Samples\WF\Basic\CustomActivities\CustomActivityDesigners\ExpressionTextBox) and dynamic activities, lambda expressions (asked here) and scripting.
What it should look like in the end is sort of:

If the approach with the lambdaexpressions would have worked, we could have called the above mentionend activity with:

Currently having several assigns clutters up the workflow designer and makes inspection of workflows almost impossible for us. As soon as there are more than 5 "Assign" activities they take up almost the whole screen (height) and it's not possible
to see what get's assigned (size cannot be adjusted of Assign activity).

You can obtain a handle to an active Excel application and connect to it, reading and writing to the active sheet.

[JS][CS5] resize document

Hi
Part of a script I am writing resized the active doc to the width and height of the selected frame. However, I cannot seem to get InDesign to reduce the page size to anything leaas that 20.5mm. There are no guides set, there is nothing on the master page either.
If I manually change the page size, to the sam measurements it is all OK.

I managed to get around to getting this sussed. I think I have it.
It is all to do with the application margin preferences, and the document margin preferences.
My code below does work, and resets the application margins back too which is useful:

All the master spreads margins are changed to 0, the document preferences are changed to 0, and the application preferences are changed to 0. It looks like all these need to be 0 before you can make the small page size.
Obviously I have left out the error controls, the actual resizing bit, but this chunk above manages to sort out the page being resized to a small size.

CIL (Common Intermediate Language) is the code we are writing inside the activity as method.
It can be any one of BPL(Business Processing Language - is the common snippet using for OBPM) or .NET or Java code.
In the above case we are using BPL.This is the beauty of Oracle BPM.Its supports all the three :)
Each process activity references a method. Methods can have CIL code implemented or can be empty,
but associated methods must always exist for process activities.

Error in Tranform Activity While Writing From File to DB Table

Hi All,
I m trying to read the contents of a csv file and writing it to the db table.
When I am trying to map the file content to the db table using tranform activity, I am getting error as "failed to save XSL Map. Make sure XSL Map is valid".
Any ideas on how to over come this issue.

FM for Joblog suppresion while active

Hi All,
Is any one aware of any Function Module which can suppress/delete/ignore Job log messages for running job. I have a job schedules which is getting failed due to memory. This is because for every entry being executed by Job system saves a success message in job log. This number is very high and job is getting cancelled.
So if there is tool/program/FM which can supressor prevent this messages being saved to joblog while the job is active?

Hi Elena,
I remember encountering the same error during our upgrade. Not exactly on tax but still on a commitment item that wasn't budget relevant. We applied the OSS note 941058 and the problem was resolved. There are few prerequisites so use SNOTE.

Mail activity window "writing changes to disk" slows iMac

So like many others, Mail is working very slowly with gmail. I even took my iMac to the genius bar, and I was told to just let the Mail program run. That once all the messages were copied to the iMac in All Mail then it would be done. Problem is it does this process every day. While this activity is ongoing it dramatically slows the computer. Here is what the Mail activity window looks like. It greets me each morning when I open it up.
Why does the mail program have to go through that process each day? Basically, I have to drink a cup of coffee and wait until it's done.
I'm surprised Apple would release an update with so many problems in native programs. (My Safari always crashes when I quit but I'll leave that for another day).

I've been having the same issue on my MBP since upgrading to Mavericks. Multiple times per day Mail seems to re-sync everything across my 8 Google Apps accounts (happening right now).
Nothing has resolved the issue, but here's what I've tried:
Verify All Mail settings in Google
Let it perform a full sync
Rebuild inboxes
Repair inboxes
Remove and re-add everything (they're all IMAP, so not a big deal)
Remove all Google accounts from the machine through System Preferences
Delete the entire ~/Library/Mail/ folder
Re-add accounts through System Preferences
Open Mail
Let it sync everything
Try with 1 account active versus all 8
And a few other things, I think, that I can't recall. I upgraded to 10.9 the day it was released and it's happened every day since no matter what I do.
Mavericks is great but Mail has some serious issues. I understand that Google has implemented some non-standard IMAP tricks that need to be accounted for, but I don't have any problems on my iPhone (iOS 7) with these exact same accounts -- so someone has it right in some way somewhere.

Writing custom implentation of javax.activation.Datasource

In our current implementation we have a
1)Media Server (MS)
2)A Server which exposes some actions like viewing clips as web service (WS)
3)A Web service client (WC)
The 1st and 2nd server has located on the same LAN
The Webservice client invokes a web service to view a clip. The 2nd Server in turn requests Media Server for the clip data using socket api's.
Now the question is how to pass on this clip data which can be upto 5 MB to the WS client.
Right now the second server reads from the input stream connected to the Media Server and write to a temp file and then uses a FileDataSource. Can we somehow avoid creating this temporary file?

computer :-)Bad move. You should actually do the exact opposite, i.e hunt down any xtra mail.jar/activation.jar and take them out. One copy under your server's lib directory should suffice, if any.
Also, the mail classes should be already included in j2ee.jar (included in your classpath), depending on the version you're using. With j2ee 1.2 and 1.3, you should not need to include the java beans activation framework...

Writing .asp Active Server Pages and calling Crystal XI in a COM+

We have some old applications we are trying to update to Crystal XI. We have done case 1219676 - How to run the RDC in a COM+ applicaiton package. When we run the report the report generator comes us but no data or fields display. We also do not receive an error. We are trying one of the test reports below you can link on to see the result. I am at a loss what to try next.

You either don't have the viewer deployed, or your pages are referencing the incorrect version.
Your page is currently references XI Release 1 and not Release 2.
