WRT160N v3 - WiFi max 270 Mbps?

Hi guys,
I would like to ask somebody to confirm if the highest speed I can get over WiFi with WRT160N v3 is actually 270 Mbps (and not 300 Mbps as advertised), please.
And there's one more thing - is it normal to have Signal: -51; Noise: -93, SNR: 43, Signal quality 53% if I am only 2 meters far from a router? TX power is set to 28.
Thank you for reply.

It is possible that you can get UP TO 300mbps but it will not hold that speed for always. They do advertise that it will reach that speed but then there is that UP TO thing to consider. Just make sure that you are using WPA2-personal (AES) for the security and you can always changed the wireless channel width to 20 MHZ only (instead of auto) and you may use channels 1,6,9,11 and see if that will increase the speed. Honestly, the speed that you are getting is not bad. That is more than what most of us usually get with the N-connection.

  • IMac no longer connecting @ 270 mbps on 5GHz n Network in wide mode....

    Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can shed some light on this.
I have a wrt610n dual band n router. Up until a few weeks ago all my n enabled devices were connecting at speeds of upto 300 mbps (except the iMac which would only ever reach 270 mbps).
Now the iMac will only connect at 130 mbps max. Both network utility and alt clicking on the wireless icon in the menu bar read a rock solid 130 mbps, whereas a few weeks back it was a rock solid 270 mbps.
I have been through all the usual rigmarole of checking settings on the router, re-flashing, deleteing all existance of wireless networks on the iMac etc.
No matter what the iMac will still only get 130. I can put my 2 laptops next the iMac and they will both hold rock solid speeds, in excess of 200 mbps for the HP and 300 (yes 300) mbps for the MBP.
I know for a fact my router hardware is set to wide (40 MHz), and that it is the 5GHz band I am connecting to. I am using WPA2 Personal AES for security. I have been through fiddling with the Beacon Interval, RTS and Fragmentation Thresholds as suggested in other posts around the net, even forcing the mcs to 15:270 mbps etc etc, all with no avail.
Before anyone starts, it's nothing to do with the country I am in, or inflated speed quotes by manufacturers, 300 mbps is realised for me so be sure I am not dreaming of theoretical maximums.
This network throughput was excellent, capable of streaming full 1080p HD to the Xbox whilst numerous other transfers are taking place, now this glory is no more.
Basically it was connecting at 270 mbps in this location with the self same settings, and now it is not. So far as I can remember nothing has changed drivers wise on the iMac...
In case it is of help I have grabbed this from system profiler.

  • 270 mbps uncompressed video/iMovie?

I have 10.3.9 and because I want to play with uncompressed digital I have been told I must upgrade software because iMovie only handles 25mbps. Thus I am looking for the lowest cost way to do it. I am having 6 hours of home movies scanned into pure uncompressed digital at 270 mbps and loaded on a portable HDD. I was thinking of upgrading to iLife '08 until I read the bad reviews on iMovie '08 and saw the system requirements for Final Cut Pro or Express. It almost seems that I will have to buy an entirely new Mac with faster processor, more RAM, and largest HDD. I welcome any and all suggestions to resolve my dilemma and will Express do it for me?

I have had very good results with iMovie 8, and I found iMovie 6 usable, but very tedious and slow.
However, if you have had past experience with a timeline based editor like iMovie 4 and you liked it, you may be more comfortable with IM6.
iMovie 6 is based on a timeline paradigm where you set the in-point, set the out-point and then trim. iMovie 08 does the same thing, but uses more of a copy-paste, or drag-and-drop interface.
iMovie 8 is the current product. You have to buy it as part of iLife 08. iMovie 6 is no longer being sold, but you can download it free as a user of iMovie 08. iMovie 6 does DV very well, but it does not support the new AVCHD cameras.
If you need more sophisticated timeline capability, another option is Final Cut Express at about $200. It is still a current product and supports all the current cameras, and has the timelines and effects that iMovie 08 does not.
Personally, iMovie 08 does everything I need it to do for home video. If you get into narrative video (making an independent movie), wedding video, commercials, animation, music videos, etc, then iMovie 08 is not the right tool. If you need special effects like slow motion, simulated rain, simulated camera flashes etc., then you must use a tool other then iMovie 08. If you have multiple cameras that you want to use over a single voice track, then iMovie 08 is not the optimal tool. It can be done, but it is much easier in a timeline based editor like IM6 or FCE with multiple video and audio tracks.
Here is one example. I threw my wife a surprise birthday party. We shot about 45 minutes of raw footage. I was able to import the AVCHD footage in 1080i, edit that down to a tight 8-minute movie, post it on .mac Web Gallery, and share it with all the attendees on the same day. With iMovie 08, you can edit as fast as you can think it.
I am going through my library of old VHS and DV tapes and editing and putting on the web. I have made 65 movies so far. At the same time, I am staying current with my current AVCHD movies. I could not do this before iMovie 08.

  • Wifi Working OK, MBP after 10.4.8 update SLOW!

    Hi all!
Right after I upgraded to 10.4.8 the Airport connectiom on my MBP is really slow. I used to get 700kbps speeds, but know i´m at 45kbps!!!
I tried the "delete preferences" tip found on these boards, but it did not work in my user account.
I then created a new user account, and Airport connected at full speed. It has to be some software issue, so i tried to delete all prefs I could find in my original account regarding Airport or network, but it still hasn´t improve.
I must say i have never had any issues with Airport on my MBP, it has always worked flawlessy until right after the update.
    Any ideas??? thank you.

two ideas that have already been mentioned:
    - do you use coconut wifi? quit it / delete it al a startup item (preferences -> user -> select yourself -> startup items (that's how it might be called in English^^)
    - try switching the router's channel (might be helpfull to use a cable-conncetion while doing that): load your router's setuppage (usually the component's name such as fritz.box or (in my case) ssx553, or try your IP and replace the final digit with a 1) than go to wifi, channels. Switching it to "auto" helped in my case, a friend of mine had good experiences with channel 11.
Hope this will help (I am NO computer expert and pretty new to the mac^^)

  • Wifi functional on MBP running 10.8.5 but not on imac running 10.8.5.

    Hi all
i am facing a very wierd situation where in i am able to connect to my wifi router which is TP-Link 3240 via my MBP running 10.8.5. I also have an iMac on which earlier  i was running 10.8.4 but started facing issues in wifi connection. I was constantly getting self-assigned ip address on iMac. After browsing a bit i manually updated the iMac to 10.8.5 but still i m facing issues regarding connecting to my wifi router. All of my other devices successfully connect to it getting a DHCP address but only specifically on iMac (2011) i am facing this issue. Pretty much tried everything from removing System config folder to resetting the SMC. I am still facing the same issue. Any help is highly appreciated. Also after going through the console logs, there is the following error line:
subnet_route: write routing socket failed, Network is unreachable.

    hi carpetbeatle.
I am facing the same issue even in the recovery partition. getting a self assigned ip and alert on no internet connection. Curious part is before i changed my router it was getting connected to same network from another router, only difference being the SSID was hidden on the router as in router didnt broadcasted the SSID, but on the new router with ssid broadcasted i dont know whats the issue. ne other suggestions

  • Home hub 3, wifi only 1 mbps on ifinity 31.54mbps ...

Hi Guys, hope you can help
Bt HH 3 on infinity download speed only 1.3 mbps when conected wifi.
we have an old pc connected directly to the HH3 and download speed is 31.54 mbps.
Reset the HH3 to factory settings and were getting 19.37 mbps on wifi for a few hours before going back to 1Mbps.
all the time hardwired download speed is around 31.54 mbps  so i know the line and connection is ok
seems to have happened over last weekend.
    cheers Mark

If it is only the wireless connection that is poor it would appear that the Homehub is failing. You will need to report the fault to BT. If you are still in contract they should replace it free of charge.

  • Question on WiFi boost from MBP

I am moving across the office and will be out of range of the wifi I use currently. It is a secure network that I have access to log in, but not access to add a booster for the router.
Does belkin or anyone else make a booster for the MBP I can use to receive the signal?

could try something like this http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_XLR8YourMac.cfm?ID=9851&Item=EDMEW7718UN
If you know the encryption key and the SSID I don't see why you couldn't use a booster, that may help out others in the office a linksys wrt-gl is like $60-70 and if you put a hyperwrt firmware on it you can do just about anything.

  • Wifi freeze! MBP will freeze entire wireless network on "join network"

This took a quite time to prove. My MacBook Pro on connecting to WiFi or on renewal of IP via wireless will freeze entire LAN (cut off) all other devices! And of course it will not connect it self. I think it would work if a static IP assigned. Now one will say that is the Router. Not likely, tested with 3 routers always same issue. Must say this was not always like this. A few months ago just randomly disconnecting some devices on network but the MBP stayed connected or just needed restart.
For those who are interested in this trouble, and perhaps learn for future references some background info. Entire LAN is about 20 devices, 8 wireless. From Windows PC, Linux box, LAN attached DVD player, printers, 4 Apple devices and 3 Andriods. All work just fine if this MBP is not turned on. I do work with computers quite a bit but never have seen this. that a computer on the DHCP requests will freeze the router! I would like to know if anybody out there ever had the same problem.

Have you contacted your Internet Service Provider? They may have throttling and might be disconnecting you unintentionally when they begin throttling you.

  • IPad mini not connecting to the shared wifi from my MBP!

    hi all
I am currently on a business trip, and set my 13" MBP to share the hard-wired internet connection in my hotel room.  Yesterday this worked perfectly to provide a hotspot for my iPad mini to connect to.
However, today, my iPad mini sees the network, but refuses to make a connection (just a spinning wheel), even when right next to my MBP!!
I have restarted the iPad, I have renewed the lease (and then switched the wifi off and then on again), I have "forgotten" my local shared network and logged in again with the correct password, but nothing is working! I have switched my MBP's wifi off and on, and did not change any setting anywhere? How can this be for a brand new, three-week old iPad?
Any suggestions please? thanks, in advance
    Dr K

i had the same problem few days ago
Open the Settings application on your iPhone, go to “General”
    - To correct the error, you need to reset the time and date of the machine: On select “Date and Time”.
    - Turn off “Set Automatically”, then switch it on again”.
i dont know the relation with this error but it worked for me!

  • Option GT Max Card + MBP = Speaker Noise...Help!

    HI All,
I bought the new Option GT Max card, and it works on both the Mac side and the Windows side (I'm running Parallels). I use the downloaded driver on the Mac side and the native cingular windows drivers suplied with the card on the XP side. My issue is that when active, the modem transmissions interfere with my speakers....the speakers make a buzzing and grating sound, even when turned off. This makes me think it's an electromagnetic interference issue. Has anyone else come across this issue, and if so, been able to resolve it?
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hello atom6. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
My question is how do I get it to work with the Base Station and my Apple TV? Is there a card reader or some sort of adapter that I can use to connect the Option GT Max 3.6 Express Card to the base station like a DSL or Cable modem?
The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) requires an Ethernet connection for Internet access. Whether that be an existing Ethernet network or a Satellite/DSL/Cable modem. I'm afraid that I'm not aware of any type of Ethernet adapter that will work with your Option GT Max card to do what you are looking for.

  • Not connected to wifi upon opening MBP

When I open the cover of (waking up)  my MBP most of the time I am immediately connected to my wifi router and, in turn, the internet. Somtimes it takes a few second to get the radiating bars to turn black black and sometimes it just keeps cycling. In the later case, I need to  turn wifi off on the MBP and then turn it back on again. Proximity to the router does not seem to matter.
While it is not a big deal, it tends to be annoying. My old MBP never had this problem. I also have never encountered this problem on two iMacs that are on all the time.
Any ideas what the problem might be and how to resolve it?
It is the latest MBP running Mavericks and the router is a Linksys G

    Try resetting your SMC.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
I hope I solved your problem.

  • Instable WiFi connection on MBP 13''

My Macbook Pro 13 (mid 2012) loses WiFi connection from time to time, while a PC7 an iPhone and an Android phone work just fine. The router is Dlink DIR-300. Supports 802.11n.
Maybe the problem is that some of my other devices make the router switch to another format or protocol which is incompatible with the MBP's WiFi module?

This could be for quite a few reasons, if you are in an area where there are a lot of wi-fi networks then changing the channel may make the difference. You can download iStumbler and see what networks are in your area and what channel they're on. If you see several with the same channel as yours that could be the problem.
Another common issue is the ISP you are using has issues with it's DNS settings. That is also a very simple fix by following these instructions:
    1. System preferences
    2. Network
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Click DNS tab
    5. Click + sign
    6. Add 208.67.222.222
    7. Click + sign
    8. Add 208.67.220.220
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit System Preferences
    11. Try out your iMac and report what happened.

  • How to broadcast Wifi Signal from MBP when using AT&T mobile card.

I have a Macbook Pro and access the internet via an AT&T wireless modem card (USB Quicksilver). Is there a way to broadcast a Wifi signal so that I can get internet on my new iTouch ?
    Thanks for any help !!
    Cindy

Yah, Seattle: I see what you are talking about: when you try to enable share, the message is "you haven't enabled a port to share", and the only offer is ethernet? I do share my wireless AT&T AirCard. Are you sharing with a PC, or more Macs, on Airport? It took me a while, when I first enabled the share on Airport. From System preferences > Internet and Network > Sharing, there is no joy. First go to Network Preferences: enable Airport; whatever it takes; Network name you self-assign. Now when you go to SysPref > Sharing > and check Internet Sharing, you get another scolding: "You cannot share 'cause no ports; or share from Airport to computes using ..." Go to Network Preferences > Airport > Network Name > Create Network, or if the other computer is up and around, > Join Network. Mine werke,s but it was ugly getting it up to a PC wireless ... I got it almost there and then had to go 128 bit encryption password etc to make the (corporate) PC happy. This is not plug and play ... Keep trying and take notes and post back.

  • RAM maxing out - MBP

My MBP has been running very slowly recently. I've noticed that the RAM is all in almost constant usage.
Do the screen shots from activity monitor and memory clean tell any of you geniuses anything? These were taken with nothing open other than Safari and activity monitor.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yosemite has totally changed how memory is dealt with on the Mac and Memory Clean is worthless with the new OS. Looking at the Activity Monitor RAM tab shows that memory pressure is rather high, an indication that you either need to run fewer applications at the same time or upgrade your computer. Having run Yosemite on numerous computers (I'm in IT) there is no doubt in my mind that (a) it runs best on a computer with an SSD and (b) it needs a minimum of 8GB
As Csound1 points out, Yosemite will always show it is using nearly all the memory installed on the computer. I'm sitting in front of a 16GB computer and I certainly don't have 16GB worth of applications running (even Safari, as big a hog as it is, has only 2 tabs open) and Activity monitor is showing nearly all the memory is in use. But the memory pressure graph is nearly at the bottom.
