WRT1900ac - Beauty and the beast

Took delivery of my WRT1900ac today. I immediately upgraded to the latest stock firmware and performed a factory reset. I'm running an Asus PCE-AC66 (ac) adapter on my main desktop. I was expecting to have to do some tweaking in order to optimize my connection, but the Linksys and the Asus hit 1.0 Gbps via the out-of-the-box defaults. I'm in a suburban bungalow in an area with very little neighborhood traffic, connecting through a single (drywall) wall. The router is installed on a shelf, about 18 inches off the floor, in a shelving unit that holds a plasma TV, a PVR, a Blu-Ray player and an AV receiver (the latter two are connected to the router via ethernet). A (5Ghz) wireless phone base is located about 5 feet from the router. Based on experiments I performed with another ac router, I chose to set the Linksys 5Ghz channel to 149 (other settings on auto - 2.4Ghz settings all on auto). As of this writing it's been about 4 hours and the connection speed (as reported by Windows wi-fi status) pins at 1.3 Gbps and does not fall below 1.0 Gbps.
Fit and finish on the physical unit are excellent. The metal knobs on the antennas are a nice touch and the detents function well. I have the two side antennas at 45 degrees and the two rear pointing straight up. The bright white LEDs look cool without blinking continually (you can turn them off).
Mixed reviews for the Smart Wi-Fi interface. It is obviously designed for the plug-and-play consumer and that's fine. A little buggy. Threw an error while I was reserving and renaming DHCP addresses. As well, the Network Map widget needs work. For one thing, it would be useful if it retained the edited names of devices (as saved via DHCP Reservations). Nits picked. The average user will find, set and forget.
I'll see how the unit fares in the coming days and weeks. It serves 11 clients including two laptops (running at their max 300 mbps), IP cameras and several Android appliances. I have owned 3 other Linksys routers over the years, including the legendary WRT54G.
Kudos.

Ok, after a reset and set up from scratch. Leave the app alone till next FW update. The router works well until then.

  • Any known risks installing and running the "feed the beast" minecraft mod?

    I know this isn't a Minecraft forum - I plan to check those too - but I wanted to solicit the opinions of some Apple/OS experts too.
    My son has been hounding me to download and install the "Feed the Beast" mod for Minecraft. I have been putting it off since I haven't been sure if running these pose any risk to my computer.
    So that is my question - what should I be aware of before installing and running this mod? Anything? Or is it relatively harmless/risk-free?

    Thank you for your response. I've had the Facebook app for quite some time and just started having problems.whenever there's a new update I always update right away. Wasn't sure of it would be a FB or iPhone problem. But you're right, haven't had any problems with any other apps. Thanks so much!

  • I have an iPhone 4 and iPad 2 and my desktop computer is a W7 machine and I run Outlook 2007. When I synch the iPhone and the computer using a USB and iTunes new calandar and contact entries on the iPhone are not written to Outlook.

    The problem seems to have started since I enabled iCloud and the two Apple devices keep beautifully in synch. I've probably just got some setting wrong but I'm a bit lost and would appreciate some help.
    If I put a "new" calandar event in Outlook and then synch this does show up on the Apple devices so the problem is just one way ... if I add something on one of the Apple devices I don't get it to show-up in Outlook.
    Many, many thanks for any help from London.

    Thank you for being patient with a "beginner" :-) I have now realized that I had no understanding of how iCloud would affect things.
    Calendar: On the iPhone I have set the default calendar to "From my PC" and now things are working ok. I have done the same on the iPad and this is also working ok. I accept that to keep things in sync I have to connect (by USB) to the PC but this is ok.
    Contacts: I was about to make the equivalent changes regarding Contacts and have done so on the iPhone only to find that there is no "From my PC" on the iPad.
    Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated.
    Would I be better off just getting rid of iCloud and going back to USB sync every now and then. This used to be fine for me. Perhaps I have been making things difficult by mixing iCloud with a non-iCloud device (the W7 PC).
    Anyway, once again, many thanks for your patience.

  • PC Suite 6.81.13.0 and the N91

    Hi, I'm running normal Windows XP SP2, on a stable system, admin rights, with anti-virus, the works...
    My PC Suite is the latest version (6.81.13.0), and the firmware is the original, that the phone was shipped with.
    I was trying to update my N91's Firmware, and it was recommended that I update my PC Suite too.
    I have finished the installation, and connected my phone to the computer using the USB cable it was shipped with.
    The initial connection was fine, but it refused to Backup. It would start the backup, and immediately stop. No errors, nothing... All it continues to tell me that no information about the previous backup is available.
    I though maybe there was a problem with the connection, but when I tried to connect again, windows gave the error popup saying:: "USB Device Not Recognised", and that it has "malfunctioned" which it never used to display... Windows recommend I reconnect (doesn't help), and if the problem persists, I should replace my device... Unlikely
    And now the same thing is displayed when I try to connect it as a Mass Storage device!? (Which is a big problem as I use it to store important data for work, as well as a desperate need for synchronisation with outlook).
    Eventually after many restarts and much fiddling, it connected again... but alas, backups still present problems.
    Once the Backup util decided to function, and accept that my phone was indeed connected to the computer
    It told me that there was an interruption, and the connection (with a phone in PS Suite mode, connected by a physical wire to a functional USB port) had been lost.
    Many attempts (about 20) later, and the problem persists (at varying stages of the operation, but never getting past 80%).
    The backup log is as follows::
    BACKUP LOG:
    Date and time: 2006/10/31 10:07:03 PM
    Backed up phone: Nokia N91
    Backup saved to file(s):
    Backing up the phone failed.
    The contact manager however was more then happy to update its self, and display my contacts.
    The Message manager refused to work, saying that connections kept being lost (and must be running out of places to hide by now, as even the internet has only so many places you can put ones connection and forget where it is...)
    After a while, it decided to let me perform all functions in the phone browser,
    although the message that i sent to myself, appeared to have been received on the 30th of December 1899!?! at 2:20am (current time 10:15).
    When I tried to view the N91's files (in hope that I may be able to crudely update by myself) explorer froze, and had to be restarted. On the second and third attempts, the app had found even more places to misplace the connection, and eventually the phone stopped responding!?
    I proceeded to disconnect my phone, in the hopes that the connection may have been lost therein, but in an attempt to reconnect, the phone neglected to display its menu of connection options, and windows failed to recognise me once more. So I restarted my phone as well as my computer, which fixed that problem.
    I thought I might try a different approach to test the validity of the connection, and used the "Store images" function. This managed to transfer over 250MB of images and video clips, without a hint of a problem. So obviously the connection/cable were not problematic.
    I thought that possibly, with my recent success, it might be worth my while to try and backup once more.. Alas, failure.
    Would the software be happier with a Bluetooth device perhaps? One purchase later, I find that:: It cannot find my phone, even though the software shipped with the dongle found it fine.
    Even after pairing and unpairing with the dongles software, PS Suite battles on... As it turns out, PC Suite is not compatible with the dongles software, and cannot access the device while the dongles software is running. After configuring both to try and run in harmony, the dongles software says that my phone no longer allows pairing?!
    A reset or two later, and I finally get the two connected.
    Backup once more gets it's attempt, and to my amazement, it reached "81% complete - Full backup".. And that’s where it stayed... For fear of ruining something beautiful, I left it there.. After about an hour with no change, I decided to abort. It didn't appear to be going anywhere... On further inspection, it appeared as though my phone had frozen in a way. It wouldn't show the "desktop" and wouldn't allow me to stop Bluetooth.. However, in the last two hours, I had made some progress... from connection lost at a max of 80% to freezing at 81%. I was getting somewhere...
    After a reset, I tried again.. Upon closer inspection, my phone appeared to be dancing around from com port to com port. (com6, then com8. com4 etc...)
    Joy... I felt a tingling sensation as the backup util reached 99%. It hung there, teasing me for about 5 minutes, until:: SUCCESS!!!
    Finally, after 6 hours, a second USB cable, and a Bluetooth dongle later, I had managed to perform the most basic and important of tasks..
    If it was this much admin backing up my phone (on v6.8 of the PC Suite software being this buggy), can it be trusted to use the update something as delicate as my Firmware (With version 1.1 of the updater)?
    This is just a report on the difficulies I've encountered (for help with sys dev)
    And also just wondering how effective this updater is (before I risk my time and money once more), and if the Firmware is even worth the trouble?

    Bbarton, it seems that th Nokia Music Manager get's confused with the new music files you have added and does not know how to show part of them. If you have some means to remove some of the files, particularly if you have veru old MP3's or similar that you have added, if you can try to temporarily remove those and bit by bit add them to find out what is the music file than causes the problem with Music manager. Also tell what is the origin of that new music (did you get that from internet for example, did you rip CD's or...?)Message Edited by manta on 13-Aug-2006

  • "USB device not recognized." "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again." Tungsten E2, Outlook 2007

    Hi,
    I am running XP SP 2, on a Dell Vostro 1000, Palm OS Garnet v5.4.7 on a Tungsten E2. I have worked though issues relating to synchronization, Outlook 2007, Docs to Go, etc., in the past.  Thank you board members!
    Once I worked thru all the initial problems, my Tungsten E2 was sync' ing beautifully to my laptop until a few days ago.  There have been no changes (I know of) to the configuration, but now I receive  "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established.  Please check your setup and try again."  On the laptop I sometimes get  "USB device not recognized."  I am unclear why I get the PC message sometimes and not others.
    I have tried the following: (not necc exactly in this order)
    Double checked Hot Sync Mgr settings: Local USB (ver. 6.0.1)
    Reset the Palm (multiple times)
    Rebooted the laptop  (multiple times before and after the Palm resets)
    Went to Support Libraries including http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=57,E=0000000001060189973,K=9550,Sxi=3,Case=Obj(3695...)
    and http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,Case=obj(1409)
    Followed the steps in "Start Here" found at  http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=26057
    Moved Backup directory as per a post on this forum
    Looked for a deleted a file called "Graffiti_ShortCuts_____________" per a post on this forum
    Followed the steps in HotSync troubleshooter guide you can run through located on
    http://kb.palm.com
    Went into Device Manager - found it shows no yellow ! 's
    Followed Device Mgr Troubleshooter - went all the way thru with no solution
    Tried all four USB ports - the PC's bell-like tone does not sound when I disconnect or reconnect the Plam's cradle like it does when I conn/disconnect other USB devices -I think that is a clue.    ...?
    Cleaned the Palm's contacts (and cradle's contacts with a old, dry toothbrush)
    Read all the posts under "USB device not recognized."
    OK, I'm at a loss, can anyone help me?  Many thanks in advance!

    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

    Hello!
    Using a cradle with the Tungsten E2?  Tried bypassing the cradle and just use the hotsync cable?  Tried a different computer yet?  Somehow, the PC is having problems getting a signal from the device.  I assume you have the laptop charger plugged into the laptop during this?  Not going through a docking station or port-replicator.
    One crazy thing you can try is unplug the charger from your laptop, remove the battery from the laptop and leave it out for like 10mins and put it back in and reboot the laptop.  This should not cause side effects but still contact your OEM to make sure that nothing else is needed after leaving the battery out for extended period of time.  Keep me posted.

  • ITUNES will not open and the msconfig trick stopped working for me.

    I was doing that every time i needed to use itunes but its like the two startup items found a way to be on right when i startup now. one is xhwx and the other is wiqwyx. they are just waiting for me now. what should i do. im running a spyware scan atm and seeing if that helps but i would love to solve this problem.

    hi Chris!
    one is xhwx and the other is wiqwyx
    yuck. there's a version of Qoologic adware out there that has been dropping start-up items with randomly-generated-4-and-6-letter names into people's PCs, and has been causing "error-less" itunes launch failures since (at least) late October. the MSCONFIG trick actually only gives you temporary relief from that particular problem.
    getting rid of it can be a trial. it seems to be slipping beneath the radar of most commercial antispyware applications at the moment (although i've seen one report that suggests Webroot SpySweeper might be picking it up nowadays).
    still, it's probably worth downloading some fresh definitions and seeing if your antispyware product has caught up with it yet.
    if that's still not getting rid of it, you could try "submitting" a copy of the beast to your security software provider. (how you go about doing that will depend on the package that you're using. see the manufacturer's website for information.)
    Dave's "manual" removal method has been working for some people:
    http://mysite.verizon.net/dbjcgj/id1.html
    ... and there's always the option of visiting a malware removal help forum to ask for advice. there's a list of Help Forums at the end of this document (there are others out there too):

    hope this helps.

    Seriously?
    Embarassing Mistake in this Video. Has anybody from Adobe watched and cleared this? How in the World Couleur this Guy become adobe Certified whatever.
    For neutral grey you'd use the k value only.
    In RGB a neutral grey is Set with Same amount of r,g and be.
    Depending on your profiles and on the colours, a neutral gray in CMYK Would have more Cyan than Magenta and yellow.
    Just Take a neutral grey in RGB and let Photoshop change it to CMYK. And have a Look at the Result.

  • Panasonic Viera TH-50PE8U and the Wii

    My husband and I recently purchased our first HDTV.  Before now, we relied on a boxy Toshiba from the early '90s!  We ended up with a Panasonic Viera TH-50PE8U.
    We were able to get the cable working, but so far have been unsuccessful connecting the Wii.  I can't wait to play Guitar Hero on my new 50" but so far no gaming for us.  What's the trick?

    Unlike the Xbox and PS3 the Wii does not have high definition content so it lacks a HDMI connection.
    You connect it either with component or composite cables.
    Choice 1: Composite may be best described as the old RCA VCR dubbing style cables with red, white and yellow male end cables for three connections (2 audio and one video). Yellow is typically video on each end of the devices. Composite is the most typical Wii hookup and your TV has those inputs and the Wii includes those cables. You will need to press the TV/Video button on the hand control and select Video 1 or Video 2.
    Choice 2: Component hookups are superior in quality. I have a Wii hooked up that way to my Panasonic 50 plasma and it looks and sounds noticeably better on component. You will need a special Wii component cable made for the Wii and it is sold at Best Buy. Nintendo makes one and Rocketfish (which I bought). On the end connecting to the TV there will be three cables for video and two for audio connections. If you use this hookup you will see Component 1 and 2 selections using the TV/Video button on the Panasonic hand control.
    The first first two choices descibe hooking the Wii up to a standalone Pansonic and without an optional surround sound receiver. If you really want your Wii to sound and look great (as well as everything else on your TV), buy a nice surround sound system and run the Wii to the receiver (along with any other auxiliary devices like cable or satellite DVR, bluray players, DVD players, Xbox, PS3. For optimal results these devices (except for the Wii which is limited to component or composite) all connect using HDMI cables to the input HDMI jacks on the receiver (so you need at least 4 input jacks). Then a single HDMI cable runs out from the receiver to the TV's HDMI input port. That runs everything beautifully and you will control which device is being currently used with the receiver hand control. To recap...it's a very simple setup concept....all devices connect with cables (preferably HDMI cables) into the surround receiver and the TV itself only has its power cord plugged in and one HDMI cable coming into it. Every media display that requires video flows into the TV from the receiver's single out HDMI cable.
    Buy a nice receiver and speakers and make sure it has plenty of input HDMI connections and your home theater will be awesome. Expect to spend $500 to $800 for a decent receiver and speakers. Don't waste money on a surround system that doesn't meet the standard of at least 4 HDMI inputs. Buy plenty of HDMI cables and make sure they are long enough...6 foot cables are usually a good bet, 3 footers not so good. Shop around for these as you can way overspend for HD cables. I have the cheapest cables and they work as well as cables that are very expensive. YMMV.
    HTH.

  • ICal To-Do's and the iPhone Calendar

    Why is it that at this stage of development, Apple has yet to offer a solution to manage and sync iCal to-do's with the iPhone Calendar? Am I missing something? It seems obvious that Apple is giving third party developers the opportunity to write the many wonderful To-Do apps out there, and there are many. The problem is, this doesn't fix the problem of sync-ability. I know that there are ways to sync between these third party apps and things such as their own desktop software (Things), which will then sync to to iCal. There are others that will sync to Google Calendar and/or Google Docs, but this is hardly a simple solution. There are always complications when you start syncing too many things to too many places, as the software doesn't always line up pretty.
    I'm basically just looking for a simple solution to use iCal, my iPhone Calendar and a To-Do function that will sync seamlessly with both. The most natural thing would be for Apple to include To-Do creation in the iPhone Calendar app with full sync capability with iCal. I find it shocking that Apple hasn't written for this.
    There are nice applications out there such as Pocket Informant that integrates a beautiful (and much more powerful calendaring function) with a To-Do function within the same application, but they have no ability to sync with iCal, nor do they have a desktop version of their software.
    If anyone has any ideas on this, or advice on the best way to integrate iCal, To-Do's and the iPhone Calendar, please let me know. In the meantime, I will post feedback to the Apple developers with a seemingly obvious enhancement request.
    Message was edited by: macorin

    With all due respect, I completely disagree with you. Integrating To-Do's and calendar events is a very natural way of organizing things. There is an app called Pocket Informant which does a very nice job in integrating the two. Even Apple thinks they are (and could be related), or else why even include to-do's in iCal to begin with? You see, it is as if they went half way in their effort. They provide something because they think it could be a good idea, but then they put no time or effort into actually making it useful for the end user. The fact that to-do's and notes show up in mail is also pointless. Why do I need mail to see my to-do's on my computer when I could just look in iCal, which is where they were created in the first place.
    Omni focus is a very powerful app. I just think that it is way overkill. What good is an app that helps you get things done, when using it actually impedes getting those things done? It literally takes so much time and effort to work with Omni (if you really want to use it correctly), that you don't have any time left over for the things you need to get done.
    And by the way, don't talk about hourly rates when you use words like "Gentlements", "prolly" (for, I am assuming probably", "proccess" (there is one c) "offence" (it is offense, unless you are from the UK, which I am assuming you are not), to name a few. Anyway, spelling aside, you shouldn't really be judging what people make based on whether someone thinks an app is expensive. The fact is, Omni focus happens to be very expensive. I am not saying that it is not worth it. In fact, I really don't know. I know that it is powerful, but for someone looking for a simple way to manage the important tasks in life, Omni is not for everyone, especially when you are spending upwards of $80 when something like Put Things Off (which I like a lot better) costs around $3.

  • Questions about Objects, pointers, and the memory that loves them

    Hey,
    This is all just a theoretical discussion so do understand that the code itself is not germane to the topic.
    I have been mulling over the whole object release/retain/copy thing and need to understand a bit more the real inner workings of the beast. The catalyst for this is the repetitional fervor that most books on the subject of Objective C have employed. Yet they all seem to fail in a complete explanation of the whys and wherefores so that one can determine on her own the correct implementation of this.
    Let's say I have an Object. For the fun of it it is an instance of NSObject and we'll call it myObject.
    When I "create" this object thusly:
    NSObject *myObject = [[NSObject alloc] init];
    What I, in fact get back is a pointer to the object in question, yes?
    So when I "seemingly" add this object to an array like:
    NSArray *myArray = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObject:myObject];
    What is actually placed in the array? is it another pointer to the original object created by myObject or is it a pointer to the pointer of myObject?
    The reason I ask this is because I have run into a situation where some previous instructions on the subject have caused errors. I was told that if I did something like this and then passed the array to a calling method that I could release this array and it would then be the responsibility of the calling method to handle the memory. Further more if I place an object into an array and then copy it into another object of the same type as the original then I could release the array and still have the reference to the first object in the second object. When I have done this I get unpredictable results, sometimes the original object is there and sometimes it isn't
    At what point should I release the array, after it is passed to the calling method (with the use of an autorelease) or when the class that it is encapsulated in is done?
    Sorry about the length of this but I can't believe that I would be the only one that would be helped by such a discussion.
    MM

    etresoft,
    Thanks for the detailed reply. I wish I could say that I wasn't still a bit confused by this. I thought I had this down after going through the lessons. It seems to not be working in practice the way that it works in theory.
    My current project is an example
    In a class I have declared a couple of ivars thusly:
    NSMutableString *source;
    NSMutableString *destination;
    @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableString *source;
    @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableString *destination;
    This is followed by the appropriate @synthesize directives.
    in the init method for my class I have the following:
    source = [[NSMutableString alloc] initWithString:@"customer"];
    destination = [[NSMutableString alloc] initWithString:@"home"];
    in a method triggered by a button click I have the following:
    if (sender == sourcePop){
    source = [sourcePop titleOfSelectedItem];
    }else{
    destination = [destinationPop titleOfSelectedItem];
    NSLog(@"SOURCE-%@", source);
    NSLog(@"DESTINATION-%@", destination);
    When I run the code and change the source selection the console reads the correct value for what is in the source popupbutton and "home" for the destination. If I then change the destination popupbutton I get a crash and nothing written to the console.
    Placing a breakpoint at the beginning of the "if" and running shows me that just before the crash the source ivar is reported as "out of scope." There are no release or autorelease statements for this ivar anywhere in the class. Yet if I change the line that sets the ivar to the value of the popupbutton to this:
    [source = [sourcePop titleOfSelectedItem] retain];
    The debugger will have the correct value for the ivar and when run normally there is no crash.
    I would assume that the problem is that the ivar is being released but I am not the one releasing it. Why does this behavior happen? Shouldn't the retain count still be 1 since the @property directive has it and there is no release in the code? Or is it that the statement that sets the ivar to the value of the popup really just setting it to the pointer and it is the popup that is somehow being released?
    Is there something else that I should be doing?
